Dogs became domesticated around 14,000 years ago. Cats have only been domestic for about 4,000 years.
How did dogs get domesticated in the first place? The first ones were basically just tame wolves. Some researchers believe wolves were first attracted by the garbage produced by early human settlements. Those canines brave enough to approach humans, yet not so aggressive as to attack, got fed. Eventually, they no longer needed the strong jaws and sharp teeth of their feral counterparts. Their noses got smaller, too. (Dogs characteristics can change a lot in only a few generations.) After this initial process of "self-domestication," humans started breeding dogs to help with hunting, herding, standing guard, and carrying stuff. Humans also deliberately bred dogs to be more adorable.

If never spayed or neutered, how many puppies could a female dog, her mate, and their puppies produce over six years?

I've tried to find the answer to this question and can't find it. While researching I did find an amazing trick dog on youtube. You can go to JustJesse and watch him. It's pretty entertaining.

I believe the tallest breed is the Great Dane (at least the tallest dog is).

This web site I looked at seems to have a lot of errors. When you list the weights of the Mastiff, it shows a big difference in what the web site has. It lists the St Bernard as the heaviest dog, but I think they are more around 150 pounds. It also lists the Irish Wolfhound as the largest.

How much more sensitive is a dog's sense of smell than a human's?

Chaser, a Border Collie, had a vocabulary of 1022 words (item names) and could categorize them according to size and shape.

BTW, Bluey was a Queensland Heeler. Official breed name is Australian Cattle Dog.

The prize for the oldest dog ever recorded was awarded to Bluey, a sheepdog from Australia. Bluey was declared Victoria’s oldest dog in the late 1930s and lived on to win the world title. Bluey was born on June 7, 1910, lived for 29 years, five months and seven days (approximately 129 dog years), and apparently lived on a diet of kangaroos and emus.

What is the name of the dog with the largest vocabulary and what kind of dog is he? How large is his vocabulary?

Oppps. I posted too late.

The first of the line of "RinTinTins" (c. September 10, 1918 – August 10, 1932) was a shell-shocked pup found by American serviceman Lee Duncan in a bombed-out dog kennel in Lorraine, France, less than two months before the end of World War I.

Asta was a popular fixture in classic films and is best known as the sidekick to Nick & Nora Charles in the Thin Man movies made in the 1930s. He was a wired haired fox terrier named Skippy. He actually has his own fan website which is www.iloveasta.com

Asta was a Wire Hair Terrier in Bringing Up Baby and the Thin Man movies. The dog in the TV series of the Thin Man was a relative of Asta's. Skippy, in the Topper television series was also Asta. (yes, I cheated)

Berners are an elegant tri-color. On the down side, they have an alarmingly high rate of cancer. I love 'em too.

What country did the Saint Bernard originate in?

Two lapdogs, a Pomeranian owned by Miss Margaret Hays of New York and a Pekinese owned by Henry Sleeper Harper of the publishing family, boarded early lifeboats in the arms of their owners. The boats were so empty that no one complained!

The hero dog , a Newfoundland, was called Rigel
Henry Sleeper Harper's dog was called Sun Yat Sen
Miss Margaret Hays dog was called ?

Well, I've worked on this question. I believe the breed is possibly shelties because they tend to be spinners. But all I could find is that they spin to alleviate anxiety. Would you post what the true answer is? I couldn't find spinning + barking + fencelines. :(

New question: Three dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic. what three different breeds were these lucky canines?

Most trace the genesis of the Poodle's haircut to 17th C. Mid Europe in what is now Germany--as they were bred to be water retrievers. The word "poodle" is derived from the German pudel, short for pudelhund--or water dog. Pudeln, in German, means "splash" and is the root of our English word, "puddle". An unshorn poodle's hair would weigh it down in the water. With the bottom half of its body shaved, it became more bouyant in the water. The long mane and hair around its chest were kept in tact to keep its organs warm in the cool water. Tying the hair on its head in a top knot kept hair out of its eyes.

What's the connection between a Buddhist Monk and a Shih-Tzu? (other than if you'd met mine, you'd understand?)

Poodles are cut like that to keep their vital organs safe, and also to help their coats not become cords and absorb the water while they are working.

After answering the question, compose a question of your own, either about a specific breed of dog or a famous dog, past or present. Let's see how many questions and answers we can come up with about dogs. You may have to use google to come up with questions or the answers. Let's make it fun and sometimes challenging.

Here's the first question:

What was the name and breed of the first dog to star in a movie?
