Our pups leave us no choice but to take a long and brisk walk every day. They are conditioned to go and won't rest until they do. We've been at this for a few years now, and we plan long walks and hikes with them in mind. We've even found a Volksmarching (walking) group in our area to join (www.ava.org). The shortest walk we take only when it's raining too hard out is 1.5 miles. Our reason to get out is that the pups need the exercise, but in reality, all of us do.

My girls are English Bulldogs and they don't care to get in too much exercise! LOL! You know how they say that people look like thier dogs? Well, I figured I'd better get on a diet.I love my bullies more than anything, but I don't want to look like them!

Roller skating would be fun. Let us know if you get any skates?

I jog with my dogs in the morning. On the weekends we walk the parks and greenways in the area. I am thinking of trying to roller-skating with him, but I have not gotten around to buying skates yet. We hope to start and agility class in about 5 weeks.

I am the thread killer! Fear me!

I am trying to come up with ideas to get some exercise that involve my dog, Kirby, and our foster dog, Missy. Kirby isn't one for playing with toys or tug or fetching anything. Missy likes playing tug with us, but we need to find a rope that is appropriate and won't get anyone hurt. Typically, I walk Kirby and Missy twice a day, every day, together. that is exercise for me. also, hubby and I take them on hikes as often as we can. Missy is a beagle, so she loves to sniff. LOL

Oh, one more....anyone try cross country skiing with their dog?? I'm really trying to find winter activities. In the summer, my dog is a total water dog so swimming is a daily activity we do together.

This is fun and thank you everyone so far for your input.

I have a couple I can add. I follow a dog trainer here in Canada thats on TV and had the opportunity to attend an outdoor dog training session last winter (yep, winter!). To keep walks interesting and also increase your Alpha status with the dog what we did was make a loop out of the leash and slip your legs through it so its around your waist. Then get ready to get moving! Instead of just straight walking, mix it up....weave between posts or trees at a very fast pace, preferrably at a run. Jump over obstacles (large SAFE snow banks are always fun!), go over large boulders, fallen tree trunks etc....any obstacles you can find.

One more....do your strength training outside with your dog attached to you. Its a mental challenge for the dog plus a challenge for you! Last winter at our training session we had to do push ups in the snow with a dog attached to our waists!

When Hudson & I were playing hide & seek tonight, I remembered that some people can get a good deal of exercise (walking through brush & such) when tracking outdoors. I imagine you'd have to work up to it. :)

Love this - my dog is my workout partner, and I have some of the same challenges. As a young GSD, Hudson needs a lot of mental stimulation & exercise too!

Luckily, we live almost on the Finger Lakes Trail (upstate ny), and we get out there about 1/week, where Hudson can run off leash and check out every creek & squirrel. I don't know what we'll do in winter!

Once/week we have a semi-private agility class, which doesn't give me much of a workout yet, but it's great for her!

Another 1/week we have a CGC class, where I'm walking around pretty steadily for an hour. Not intense, but we're up & moving.

Our dog park is located on a gorgeous 2-mile waterfront trail, which is a great place to work/walk/jog.

I've seen others rollerblade with their puppers, and even attach them to their bikes with shock absorbing "leashes" -- that will be a fantastic run! I'd love to try that!

Have fun!!
K:)

Right now for me, its working Phoenix doing Rally exercises and Intermediate Novice exercises for the upcoming show in Oct. New things to teach him, and I have to work on my foot work so I won't loose as many points. He and I both have a blast doing it

We took Alice to the ranch with us today. She loves it there. Besides Horses, they have Llamas and Goats. She wants to play with the Goats so badly. We can't let her off the leash yet though, so my Hubby just walked her around the place. She got in a good workout. We also have some open desert near our house, so we can walk the dogs there as well.

Your hike sounds great. I love the woods!

Do you have an agility club nearby? That's great exercise and also keeps their minds sharp. I took my dog to a three-month agility class and he loved it, but unfortunately there aren't any clubs in our neck of the woods.

Great thread idea! Normally we just walk, sometimes my little one will jog with me, so I'd love to see what ideas others have.

Sometimes when I'm shy of 10,000 steps on my pedometer I'll run around the house with my dog, it's amazing how those steps add up!

I'm in, since I love to have the dogs around me.

Yesterday, we drove to the storage yard to pull out our Toy-Hauler. It's been parked there all summer and we needed to get it ready for our fall/wintr camping trips. We took the dogs with us, in the truck. They 'helped' us to get hitched up then we towed the trailer to my husband's workplace. The dogs had a blast, running in and out of the trailer while we cleaned. Then the dogs took a nap in the shade while we did the hosepipe thing.

They know that camping seasion is coming, and that they'll be coming with us. : - )

That's a great idea! Hiking. I live close to where I can go on so many hiking routes and never. I honestly don't have any great ideas to add but I could sure use some!!

I'm a bit extreme when it comes to my dog but I try to include her in as many of my activities as I can. As such, I need to make sure that any weight loss related work outs etc are designed to have my dog with me as much as possible.

The Challenge to all: List a creative exercise/activity that can be done with your dog.

I'll start by saying that today, instead of the standard walk, we went hiking in the woods for an hour. Now, we're off for a canoe ride (yep, Casey comes with me). But, I love variety and would really like to get some new ideas.
