I had to get my poodle spayed after birth of 3 puppies. She had an infection because the last puppys' after-birth didn't come out. It was my one and only experience with breeding dogs.

I always tell my girls " It will all work out " and it usually does.

To add to the pyometria, if it is not caught (while it is still open), surgery most likely will not help, and they female will die.

We had pyo years ago (same time as Maggie re-absorbed her pups), had we had new pups on the ground we would never have caught that her Mom Brandy was so sick. We caught it just as it was closing, a few minutes and we would have lost her.

Yes Pat...I lost my Shih Tzus due to breast cancer from leaving them intact. You also stand a risk of female dogs developing pyometra in the uterus which is a life threatening condition. Here is a link that explains pyometra of the uterus:

I once had a Chihuahua that went through false pregancy. I agree with DODDS i would have her ckecked out to make sure that its not anything else than the false pregnancy. But if you don't even breed her i would get her spayed. my little chi had to have emergency surgery due to her olvaries, they were in early stage of cancer. so the vet removed them and advised me that if i don't intend to breed my dogs i need to get them fixed for thier own health. All my dogs are fixed.

Then I would definitely talk to your vet to make sure she is 100% okay. It worries me that she is having white discharge. I would get her checked out and see.

Also she may have some complications since she is an older first time mom. Is she registered/pure bred? Has she had health tests done?

We have talked about getting her spayed, but we still would like her to have a litter. This is the main reason we did not do this when she was a puppy. When she was just 6 months old she tried to nurse my sister in laws two 8 week old puppies. She would also sit at her dish to tell me she didn't have food. As soon as we would fill it up she would go get them so they could eat before she did. She is a very motherly dog and we want her to have a litter this next heat. If it doesn't happen then she will be spayed. I have a limit I don't want her having any litters once she turns 5. I do know that once she is spayed then no more heating pads and mommy daddy love me I don't feel good. Sorry she is my baby and she knows it, and she thinks the same thing. A lot of the times we say that she does not realize that she is a dog.

I would also get her spayed.

The last time we bred Maggie, (we thought she was pregnant, we felt movement, she had tons of milk, was uncomfortable, etc) however we figure she re-absorbed the puppies. She was fine once her milk dried up. We spayed her the following year after we had done tests and found out she was sterile (from an e-coli infection).

Is your girl pregnant again? I would talk to your vet because there could be something else going on.

I guess I would have her spayed if your not planning on breeding her. Leaving your pet intact can mean trouble down the road.

I've never had to deal with this as we've always spayed our female dogs very early on (aside from the one purebred GSD we bred). After some quick googling, it seems that the symptoms should resolve in three weeks or so and it's very common to reoccur once it's happened once if you don't spay the dog. I found these informative websites, and I hope they help:

Does anyone know how long it will take for a dog to come out of a false pregnancy? My girl is 4 and she went through this last year. She carried a orange ball and just cried and cried. I thought she wanted to play so I threw it. Talk about a look. I didn't know that I just threw her baby. She carried it to her pillows and never left it. Then she just went out of it.

Now she is starting to act like she did last year. When I check her belly she has a clear hint of white coming out. So I know that she is in the process of it, but I don't know what to do for her. I know that she will be fine when she comes out of it, but again what do I do before than.

Thanks for the advice.
