Maybe I am a bit south of you but bet not by much. I am in Idaho, and my tennis courts still have snow on them. We had a warmer weekend but it rained and not sure if this got the snow off, I doubt it. Glad you could still get out and walk; wish the best and have a great Monday!

Ameskie, unfortunately tennis has to wait a month or two still... You must live significantly further south than I live!

Indoor tennis courts are not too many here, and the membership to those places is $$$$. Outdoor courts are covered by 2 feet of snow and ice. Yikes. I was just thinking of that in the morning dog walk (2.8 miles!).

Well, at least it was gorgeous sunshine, though a bit cold with the wind. I needed sunglasses though because the bright sun on the snow was quite blinding.

Pathgirl, you know I would prescribe the sport to you, call me Dr. Tennis! emoticon

In addition to the benefits of the activity, i know a lot more people and have more connections through this sport than anything else I have ever done. The comraderie and friendships are pretty special. Hope you consider it seriousely; btw, don't worry about the swing,it's the fun that counts!

Tennis is a FANTASTIC exercise. Very aerobic. I used to play both Tennis and Squash (consequently never got the swing right for either one of them).

In the last few years I did triathlons, but seems to have lost the motivation for it this year... maybe should look into tennis again!

I coach Tennis. Love THE SPORT!! Yep, generally I drop a few lbs. when coaching, walking all the time around the courts, running drills, etc. Nervous about getting started but once we get going, should get into a rhythm. Have a good day Pathgirl!!

Great to hear! Hope it wasn't too too cold (for your sake - the dogs probably don't mind).

After the weekend melt and rain, everything is frozen again here and down to -6 celsius (21 Fahrenheit). All the slush is now solid again... Funny thing is the dogs seem to prefer it.

The tough part is going from 32 Fahrenheit to 21 in a span of 12 hours - actually more like 10 Fahrenheit with the windchill - but that's just the *humans* complaining. :-)

I only know how to add the weight scale underneath the message... you do that on the "Edit my SparkPage". At the very bottom of that page you can choose the them for the weight scale.

As for other goals, I am not sure.

Hi Ameskie;

Do not let cold weather keep you from walking your dogs! I can tell you from TONS of experience that if your dogs could talk, they would tell you that they really do not mind the frozen ground.

I live in Canada and it has been weeks and weeks and weeks here that it has not been above 0 degrees celsius (your 32 Fahrenheit, I believe), we've had over 3 feet of snow - now of course nothing but ice. It has been down to -25 to -30 celsius with the windchill factor (-13 to -22 Fahrenheit) - and through this I walked my dogs twice a day. One of them is a Golden and German Shepherd mix - double coat but not too long, the other is a short haired, single coat mutt of unknown heritage, possibly Ibizan hound but definitely not purebred.

They do not complain, on the contrary, their favourite part of the day is the walk. When I get home from work there is no postponing the walk for more than 1/2 hour because they whine and run to where the leashes are, etc. (even though they get a potty break immediately as I get home).

Even the single coated little rascal is fine outside - without one of those doggy coats. As a matter of fact, tons of people in my neighbourhood walk many short-haired breed, like German Short-haired pointers, Great danes and the others with or without doggy coats and they do just fine. (I made a point of moving to a neighbourhood that is *known* for being dog friendly, so yes, there are lots of dog walkers out there). I've never even heard of a story of frost bite or anything like that on a routine 45 min to 1 hr walk.

I did consider getting a doggy coat for my dog, but never, not once did he seem cold. He is young and energetic and he still seems panting - tongue out - after a good run, so really no issues of being too cold. Before I got him I asked a guy walking to German short-haired pointers and a Vizsla if his dogs were ever too cold outside (3 dogs, none of them wearing doggy coats). He said never; he used to live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (now that's cold - check it out on the map) and even there the dogs were fine. He said 'I guess if the dogs get cold they just run a little more'. But even on a leash my dogs seem fine.

So don't let that keep you from your - and their! - exercise. They will thank you for the opportunity to get out of the house.

Wow, I like this concept, willing to lend support to someone, how do people get 'partnered'? I have two dogs, Australian Mix, and a Husky mix, best walking buddy. I wait for better weather cause i worry about frozen ground on my dog's feet but weather is getting better now! ReadytoRide would like to team if interested. My id. icon is my husky btw, jessie!

Hi;

I'm new to the group. I have two dogs, an older, arthritic Golden & German Shepherd cross, and a much younger, agile, super fast Ibizan hound cross.

But besides their walk - which they do get every day - *I* used to be much more active (did an Ironman triathlon last year). This year I became a lazy bum.

I would love an accountability partner, and of course would love to be the same for someone else.

I need to get my butt off the couch at least 4-5 times a week for 30 minutes each time, running, cycling or swimming or strength training or anything!
It helps with burning the calories, helps with sleeping better and lowers my stress. So why am I not doing it?!!

Hello All,
I've been doing well on my food plan and have lost 16 pounds. I have a hard time fitting exercise into my life. I have 3 wonderful dogs. Two are aging Australian Shepherds, and the third is a Red Heeler. The Red Heeler is very fit. He accompanies me when I ride me horse. My Aussies can't keep up with the horse anymore and I want to make walking them a regular activity. It would help me to have someone to be accountable to.

Thanks,
Carrie

Hi, I would also love an accountability partner. I've been with WW and doing okay, not great. I believe that I have more resolve to do it now than I have had in past year. I have 2 dogs, one is extremely overweight and I feel so bad for her. She is also extremely afraid of not having us all together during walks. So to get our family together, husband, I and the 2 dogs, we get in about 4 good walks a week. When we do get out on our walks she does fairly well, with some panting, which is good. I've changed her feeding and she's use to the new food, but now trying to cut back on the after dinner treats, so she whines. Last night is wasn't as bad, although she stared at my hubby almost all night (he's the treat giver). We also had a bad habit of ice cream in the evening for a snack. So we are trying to cut back on that also, along with really no snacking after 7pm.

So it would be great for someone else dealing with being overweight and dealing with a couch potato for a dog that overweight come along side me and we could encourage each other.

I need some accountability to walk Ladybug at least once a week.

part of the reason why I don't walk her more often is that she is horribly frightened of everything in the neighborhood: other dogs, cars, people, houses, bushes, etc.

The other reason is that we take her a lot of places where she is allowed the opportunity to run around and play with other dogs, so I know she gets a lot of exercise, but I miss out on the bonding with her and I'm sure she can always use more exercise.

And the last reason is that I'm very busy and the days are short now.

So...if I had some accountability, maybe I could start small, with one long walk a week. That way Ladybug might gradually get used to being out and about in the neighborhood and I might gradually be able to find more and more opportunities in my schedule to walk with her.

Hi! I'm new to SparkPeople, but I'm really excited about it and would love to have an accountability partner. (Besides my dog I mean!) haha

Jean, we can also create threads too for those partners so they have a place to discuss things here and they can also use the Sparkmail of course. I liked having a place where everyone could see the progress the partners were having in the Fat Wives Club.

Since I was the one that mention it in my Blog I really would like an accountability partner.

Maybe we should put a little about our selves here to make a better match any input on that? I could post a little thing for people to fill out. Just let me know If that is something we would like. I am at work all day and cant check computer but I check after work several times an evening.

Jenni, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I know I've observed a couple of weight watchers meetings and they talk about how much weight they've lost, what's working and what's not, and general encouragement. Sometimes in large teams like we have here, some of us may feel like we don't have that accountability. I feel accountable to everyone here so I don't do too badly, but having a partner really helps keep you going. We did one on one challenges in one of my other teams and I really felt that it helped me stay focused. So all you need to do is speak up and say, "HEY!! I NEED A MOTIVATIONAL PARTNER!!" Or, you can simply ask someone to be your partner. We obviously all have a couple of things in common here, we all love dogs and we're all here to lose weight so finding someone to partner with shouldn't be too hard. If you'd rather me assign partners, I can do that too, just let me know how you'd like to do it. Let's see if you can keep spreading the spark to ourselves and to others.

Shannon :)

I did feel accountable at weight watchers because someone else was seeing my weight and my progress (or lack thereof). I think I am missing that here. My idea of a partner would be checking in on weigh day to see how each other did... also maybe write a couple of times during the week to see how things are going... just to kind of give the nudge you may need sometimes. Is this what you had in mind, Shannon?

Shannon - I haven't been to a WW meeting in 4 years and back then, you showed up, got weighted & listened to your leader talk for 30 minutes & left - there wasn't any partners or announcement of your weight loss/gain unless you hit a specific 5 or 10 or what ever goal ... So what is this partner? and how does this work? or maybe how is this different from deciding that I'm going to walk X miles a day and reporting it every month?

sign me curious! and always willing to try something in addition to what I'm already doing to get to where I'm going!

Someone mentioned in a blog that they wanted more accountability like they have with Weight Watchers. So I got to thinking why not have more accountability here? I'm sure you're asking, how do you propose we do this in this type of environment? Well, I think we could have accountability partners (or two).

So let's say I wanted to partner up with someone, I would post a message here requesting a partner. Then whoever gets here first and would like to partner with me, we would become partners. We can then become accountable for each other in any way needed, exercise, food, self-esteem, or just general attitude. That's something that you and your partner would work out together. If you wanted to have more than one partner, then just post this in your request. You could then exchange phone numbers, personal email addresses, or however you want to communicate with each other.

So partner up with someone and let's get each other to our goals!! Good luck!

Shannon :)
