The CSA we're doing is great because it's paid week-to-week and only $28 a week for a large basket. This is the first year we're doing it, so I'm looking forward to it.

Sounds like a good box. We are skipping the CSA again this year due to the cost. I plan on shopping at the local farmer's markets as much as possible.

Our first CSA share doesn't come until June 13. I can't wait.

The thing I like about getting the share is that there will inevitably be things in there that I would never buy myself, so it's a challenge to find a way to use new produce.

When I first made this I wasn't impressed, but after it was chilled over night in the frig, it was great! I guess it needed time for the flavors to blend! emoticon

I am blessed to live in an area where we can get fresh veggies and fruits year round from the local markets. I love going to our local farmer's market and talking with the people there. We have tried many things that we would not as they would explain how to prepare the fruits and veggies

Keep on track

LADYIRISH317 - OK I understand now. We have a Farmers Market every Saturday and Sunday in a huge parking area behind a Sears Store and they feature produce from the local farms. I used to go all the time, but got out of the habit. I usually go to Whole Foods who buys their produce from local farmers.

Bev, a CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. It's a service to obtain fresh, organic produce from local farmers. I'm blessed to have found one that lets you pay as you go (instead of in advance months or weeks in advance) and that is year-round instead of seasonal. The produce is awesome!

Miss G, I will definitely try roasting the asparagus. It's my favorite veggie, and I'll eat it any way, shape or form I can get it.

Have you tried roasting asparagus? It's so lovely! I have to plan on two bunches for the three of us, and there's generally an argument over who took more than their share.

A coworker was going out of the country last week and she knew I love to cook so she gave me some veggies so they wouldn't go bad. I tried Chard for the first time. Sauté with garlic and onion and a tad a vinegar. I didn't use the stalk, I was scared. lol Very tasty.

Your basket sounds fun.

OK what is a CSA box? Have no idea. I too watch CHOPPED and get so many wonderful ideas on how to cook some of the strange foods. Bev

I just got the new CSA box and I'm figuring out what to do with it right now.

I got a surprisingly large spring onion -- it looks like a purple scallion on steroids! The bulb is almost as large as a small yellow onion. I'm thinking of using the green part as the onion in a cream of broccoli soup I'm making, and roasting the bulb with an Italian bread crumb gratinee.

Rainbow chard -- I always saute sturdy greens with shallots and Canadian bacon. I've tried using the stems, but they turn a sickly gray. I can't seem to keep them pretty. The few times they've been an ingredient on Chopped, the judges always want to see them included with the leaves. I just haven't figured it out.

Asparagus -- most of it is going to be steamed and eaten "as is." Some of it is going into a shrimp stir-fry with shallots, white beech mushrooms (they look kind of like enoki mushrooms), ginger and garlic and served over Soba noodles.

Arugula and romaine -- duh. Salad. I seriously can't wait until tomatoes start coming in the box again because I love tomatoes in my salad but I refuse to buy imported.

Apples, oranges and avocados -- just eat as is.

I love my CSA!
