It has been a very difficult year. I've changed many medications and despite my best efforts, have not been able to move much. My torn rotator cuffs have kept me from my arm bike and much arm movement, while my knees needing replaced and surgeries have kept me from moving my legs much. My back, well, still a mess. I do what I can do, which is set walking goals of roughly 3000 steps per day, uo from 800. Yes, when I saw I was getting 600-800 steps a day, I really gave myself a talking to!

I told myself it's about what I can do, not what I can't. I was in the midst of CANT thinking again. A terrible trap. I had to get my brain in gear. Can't thinking leads to weight gain and disability.

I am still around, just vacationing a bit lol. My health has been rather bad lately and my insurance is not that good, so it's majorly stressful. I wish I could just come down with something curable for a change lol. The resting and relaxing has been nice though.

I am recovering from major back surgery. I am scheduled to return to work is two weeks under less that favorable circumstances. Do to this I am getting very discouraged. I still need to loose at least 50 pounds, weight that I regained after successfully keeping it off for 2 years.. I really need encouragement. You are a very special person. If you keep going, even when something SEEMS futile, you get where you are going. That's how I lost over 230 pounds. I had a 1 year and a three year plateau thrown in there. Seemed relentlessly futile, but I gave my methods trust and kept going, trying new things. You never give up. That's how you succeed.

Not much to say today, recovering from a low and a fight with apendegitis- inflammation by the colon, very painful. Not to be confused with appendicitis. Lately I've been being very stupid and eating sugar on my cereal, which CAUSES CRAVINGS FOR SUGAR!!!! Being a health and wellness/ weight loss coach, I should know better, and I do! But, I still fall victim to the crazies like everyone else. Today was not my last bowl of sugar ridden cereal, it never is your last anything unless you're planning on dying. Let's ask ourselves how many LAST things we've had in preparation for a DIET. It never is the last... and the deprivation thing is the WORST feeling! So just say "No!" to lasts.

Say "Yes!" to lifestyle change! Changing little things one at a time and making them part of your life really does work. You have to make the changes no-brainers, not tough ones. Like, I will continue to eat cereal, I will just use stevia to sweeten it and not sugar. I'll eat fruit with it for a boost of healthy natural sugar to combat cravings and protein to make it last.

What can you do to solve your 1 issue?

Dear young Beth,

I know you think you are ugly and a monster rather than a girl. Well, you aren’t. Dear girl, you have listened to others far too long. From the babysitter who calls you “Monster child,” to the kids at school, and even your own family, everyone else tells you who you are. Do they ever ask you who you are? They should observe rather than label based on your weight. They would see a girl that takes all of that and then some and is still standing.

You’ll come to realize someday that you aren’t ugly just because you are overweight. Weight and beauty have very little to do with each other. You’ll learn to appreciate the beauty you do possess when you stop listening to the negative messages of the thin obsessed world around you. So, young Beth, if you can get a handle on ignoring these messages and appreciating your body right now, you will feel amazingly beautiful.

You were never without will power. Do you realize how much will power it took you to get up and go to school every day knowing you were going to be teased into tears, come home from school and hear about your weight from your mother and then listen to your boyfriend make comments about your weight? Yet, the next day came and you did it all over again. You’re strong, use that strength to overcome.

Yes, I suppose you were a “Weirdo” to some, but I prefer calling you creative. You write poetry, parodies, blogs, paint, make people laugh, find easy ways around impossible situations, and do it very naturally. That’s nothing to be ashamed of, even if it does come with a bit of Dungeons and Dragons and Doctor Who thrown into the mix. Appreciate your ability to think out of the box, because someday it gets you out of some very bad situations.

Now with these tools, self esteem, strength, and creativity, you can make it through your fitness issues. Despite the fact that your mother stands in your way for joining any gym or fitness group, your creativity can lend to creating your own workouts at home. Work out when she isn’t home. Try wearing new clothes and even try some workout clothes, they will raise your self esteem. Your strength will carry you while you make changes. You’re a very intelligent straight A student. Take some nutrition classes at school or get some books at the library. Work at small changes in eating and exercise and build from there. Count on your Aunt Jo for support. She is a gym teacher who can teach you much about physical education and eating in a non threatening environment.

We've lost 225 pounds, you and I. Here's how. Start now!

Eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables.
Drink at least 8 glasses of water.
Eat moderate amounts of lean protein with each meal.
Eat high fiber and whole grain foods.
Eat close to nature. Processed food is full of junk and won’t fill you up the same way real food does.
Take baby steps, getting one change down at a time. Go for progress not perfection.
Tune out the haters.
Something is always better than nothing, so always do some exercise.
Always order small.
Eat from small plates.

I hope this helps you keep from getting where we got, 460 pounds. We made it down to 230 now, but it’s harder not being young and skin isn’t so elastic. Lose now and you will have less to lose and less sagging skin. You can do it! I believe in you!

Celebrate your hard work, not just your weight loss. The weight loss is the pay off in itself. The hard work that doesn't show on the scale shows up in the jar and keeps you motivated.

It wasn't until I was ready to accept progress instead of perfection that I COULD lose weight. I had to leave where I had been for 40 years, seeking perfection, the Barbie Doll, the magazine cover in my mind that I would never be. I always knew that deep down, and maybe that's why I gave up so easily.

To seek progress, any progress, the half pound a week, the ability to just move my legs off the side of the bed, took tremendous effort and frustrated me. I hated where I was though. I wanted to leap and bound and lose 5 pounds a week... but I had tried that for at least 30 some years, yes since early childhood. We all want that though, the instant fix and perfection. Well, guess what, there is no instant fix and perfection, well, go get some photoshop software because that's how the models do it. They are an illusion, as is perfection. The only thing real about change is progress.

IF the only thing real about change is progress, progress is a journey. The journey has no end. You just keep making progress in your life, in all areas of your life. Success tends to spill over. It starts to seem limitless. Change is limitless. That does not mean you never have problems or encounter trials, Lord knows I have been through the wringer, but it does mean life offers second chances.

To stay on the wagon? To stay off the wagon? My point? Get rid of the wagon all together. Wagons can get away from you. Keep your feet on the ground.

I used to think most goals were out of my reach. I live life more day by day as my journey to health continues. Instead of looking at how far I have to go, I rejoice at how far I’ve come. Every extra effort to get where we are going counts as a success in this journey of ours. Even if we fall, we tried. We are like babies learning a new lifestyle of walking, and we should always get up and try again. Wouldn’t it be sad if a baby just decided it was too much effort and never tried to walk? We would weep for the hopes and dreams we would have for him or her.

Hopes and dreams keep me going now. I shop looking at clothes with a “Someday I will wear that” attitude, as opposed to just envying those who can wear it now. No, I probably will never be a size 5, but I’ll have more choices of clothes that I like better. It’s already happening. I never realized I had an active wear side before. Usually, I’m a girly girl. I think new sides of you start to surface as you remove the layers. My husband is sometimes surprised by how drastically my taste in clothing has changed. I have a few shorter skirts and tighter tops and have given up the baggy, frumpy look. I dream of the day of picking anything I want off of the rack at any store I want.

Before SparkPeople, I also had no idea that I was interested in physical challenges. Now I hope someday to do a 5K in an actual event, and even without a walker. Gym classes were always so competitive and it was just a pastime for others to make fun of the fat kid. I think it scared me away from physical challenges. The one thing I always enjoyed was Hatha yoga. As a child, I watched a show called “Lilias, Yoga, and You” on Chicago PBS. I remember just waiting for that show to come on television and challenging myself daily to see if I could do her poses or improve or even understand. Now I dream of being able to do a salutation to the sun once again.

I dream of writing a book someday to help others stay inspired through this life-long journey. There are a few chapters written. I’m not sure what to do once I get a book written, so I think my brain is stalling. Writing to you on SparkPeople is a dream come true. Honestly, I prayed for a way to reach people with the news that even mobility-challenged, severely obese people like me can make the journey. When I was starting out and found that I could get the support and tools that I needed right in my own home with SparkPeople, it made all the difference in the world for me. I can only hope that something I write touches someone and helps them.

I also dream of being a weight loss coach, to help others make it through the hard times. I’m still letting my fear hold me back here. A great friend of mine, SPARKGIRL32 encouraged me in this direction and I think I would enjoy it.

Think about your hopes and dreams and then move a little closer to them each day. You can embrace yourself, nurture yourself, and love yourself. Then follow your hopes and dreams as far as you can. Each day is full of new possibilities. Is this the day I will dance? Will I walk on the beach this year? Every question, every new possibility, every hope, and every dream keeps me going. Did you notice that I never mentioned a number on a scale? That’s because it is merely a side effect of changing your life. Change your life and you change your weight, not the other way around.

Yesterday I was getting my arm bike out of the closet and got muscle spasms... waiting for them to pass so I can use it. It's always something! That's why I push through things. If it isn't one thing, it's another. Might as well just play the hand you're dealt.

That's why when I couldn't walk, I did bed exercise and an armbike... I scooted in my wheel chair. When I could use my walker I did as much as possible and just pushed through the drudgery and pain. No it's not exciting, but taking that first few steps without it is! But then you get worn out and sore doing that and there is a new set of hurdles.

So let's face it, no matter where you are in your journey, it's a struggle, so why not just push through the struggle you have now instead of waiting til tomorrow or until this is over or that is over? Modify what you can do now and do what you CAN and forget about what you can't.

Hello, this is my first check-in. So far, so good. I went to Zumba class. One other little thing that I;m happy about - I did not go into the station for a snack when I stopped to gas up my car today. That's a habit I really want to break, ' cause it costs me both calories and $$.

My husband's biopsy came back benign, normal. My surgery is scheduled for my shoulder on the 24th. Still needing prayers for healing and finances to pay for both surgeries.

Postponing my surgery til at least the end of April on my shoulder. Eating out of frustration and pain, but noting that having healthy foods in the house to nosh on cuts the weight gain side effect of said eating. IF you just have to eat, eat the healthiest versions possible.

Doctor results: Cyst in my shoulder joint the size of an orange. Needs to be removed along with part of the joint and part of the collar bone. Knee caps off center, bad arthritis, possible tear in the meniscus, some bone on bone activity, and spurs. Surgery in the future. Need to lose more weight and strengthen shoulders first. Husbands colon cancer is possibly back, biopsy and removal is in two weeks. We can use prayers to get through this and prayers about how we are going to pay the medical bills.

You know, this last week, I started strength training with weight machines for the first time in 20 years... OUCH in a good way. If you can't use your legs, arm bikes like the Magnetrainer are GREAT! Chair exercises are fantastic! See chairexercisefun.com or Coach Nicole has some great stiff out there now.

I'm drinking my whey protein shakes daily because I don't take in enough otherwise.
I take a greens supplement now in addition to my fruits and veggies.
I still take my cinnamon and chromium 2000.
I'm on vitamin D3000, magnesium, calcium, coq10, pqq, coconut oil, bq12 and complex liquid, turmeric, and Alive multivitamins. I would like to say I take Omegas, but I get them via additives in milk and flax.

My eating program is simple-
TRACK- even if I go over
Keep foods as natural as I can
Order one size smaller than I want to
Avoid high fructose corn syrup
NEVER allow trigger foods in the house- go out and eat them if I have to have them

Drink water
Lemon water- Like 4 lemons to a quart sliced is very helpful in eliminating water weight

MOST OF THE WORK IN LOSING WEIGHT IS IN YOUR HEAD! The things above are just the stuff you have to DO. The real work is making yourself behave the way you know you should.
What you have to remember is:

Take every choice one at a time.
Use the word IMMEDIATELY as in I will immediately turn this around, not get back on track tomorrow. By tomorrow, you may have a pound or two more damage done.
Don't eat something just so you won't binge on it later. Yes, been there.
It takes less effort to just work out than to keep putting it off and feel crappy and depressed about not working out and then binge over your not working out.
One slice of pizza always has less calories than two.
Something is always better than nothing.
YOU deserve good food! Quit wasting your money on crappy MCDonalds and junk and justifying it and then saying you have no money for healthy food. That SAME money could buy healthy food. We are just programmed to buy what is bad for us as a treat and NOT what is good for us as a treat. Start buying yourself something healthy and decadent for a treat. Been there and done that too.
Don't take water pills to lose weight because you can't pee out a pizza.
You have to change your life before you can change your weight, not the other way around.

I hope my tips help someone. They were hard won.

Today is my 50th birthday and I celebrate not with just a piece of cake, but with the knowledge that I am happier and healthier than I was at 40 weighing 230 pounds more. Thank you SparkPeople and thanks to all of you who have cheered me on and supported me.
Now my goal is to get into the 100's by my next birthday and gain some muscle.

Sorry I have been MIA. I've had a depressive episode due to seasonal affective disorder and bipolar that has been rough! Prayers are appreciated! I'm doing better, as my doctor found 2 medicines that I was put on a few months ago that could have knocked things out of balance and took me off of them. She also added a new anti depressant, so here is hoping...

Imagine yourself in a car and just never hit park or reverse... always move forward. Even when you are eating something off track, just take the wheel and turn it back in the right direction. Don't stop! If you blow a tire, don't run around the car popping the other three tires in an angry frenzy, get the one fixed and get back on the road. If you get a speeding ticket, pay the fine, don't spend the rest of the day breaking traffic laws. If your engine needs fixed, don't take a hammer to it and go extreme force or try to hold it together with spit and chewing gum, take it to the garage where they know what to do with it and how to diagnose the problem better than you can. Keep your paint job pretty, it makes you feel better while you're driving around.

Rode my bike for the third time and fell again, this hurting my knee and shoulder, both of which already need surgery. Also pulled on a hernia, which is now protruding and hurting more. In a few days, I plan to adjust the bike seat lower and go at it again. Why? Because I fell when I first tried to walk after being bedridden. Nothing of value comes easily. Feeling the breeze in your face and the wind dancing in your hair as you ride freely is worth the fight. If it's something you want, NEVER give up on it!

I honestly thought I would weight 460 or more and die in my room. It was that last ditch half-hearted attempt that stuck. Don't wait for some magical stars to align and motivation to hit. Start down the yellow brick road, Dorthy. You will find the Wizard.

Be sure to get to the Indy rally this August 23rd. There will not be another Spark Rally held until fall of next year, if we even hold one in Indy. We plan to tour in Kentucky and Ohio.
