I had never run before...had been a walker just as you are, but with the C25K program I now consider myself a runner and it is something I really look forward to! I have run two 5k's, am currently training for a 10k and plan on doing a 1/2 in September. I started at just over 200 pounds, but my sister was closer to 260 (I believe) when she started. It has been a little slower forward progress for her, but she can complete a 5k in under an hour and that's AWESOME!!! :-)

Yes - your hubby is probably right...you could probably walk a 1/2 now. Why don't you look for a 10k that you can walk while you begin the C25K program? That should give you a pretty good barometer of where you are at. Best wishes!!!

Don't let smoking deter you from running. I have smoked for 23 years and completed 3 5ks (best time: 32:30) and a 10k (time: 1:15:21). I may not be fast, but I still do it.

I am looking to quit smoking soon, though.

I always say that I'm a walker, aspiring runner. That being said, I am training for my 5th half marathon now, as a walker. (Although I'm supposed to run a 5k at the end of March! Eeeek!)

I'm interested in doing a 1/2 also. I started running at ~220 pounds back in October. I started with the C25K program and now run anywhere from 3-4 miles 3 X a week at approximately 4.8 - 5 mph. There are some 1/2s that are inclusive of walkers. Definitely check into it. I bet you may walk faster than some people fun, from the sounds of it. Good for you. :)

No prob -- if you feel your body could handle a 1/2 marathon walking, then I would bet you could job a 5K quicker/easier than you thought.

I've been "running" (in quotations because I still don't consider myself a 'runner') for a few years now and have only done 5Ks. I remember telling myself before my first race that my goal was 60 minutes. I had no concept of running 3 consecutive miles in less than 20 min/mi. Looking back, I laugh at myself and am astonished by all the miles I've logged.

I'm 6 feet tall and weighed ~245 when I started running. I now try and aim to finish under 40 min. This kind of bums me out, I feel like it should be less, but I also did not start with the C25K, which I think was a huge mistake.

You CAN do this. I know it. Especially with the C25K program. I wish I had done that!

I am not running yet, but plan to use the C25K program when I do. I have walked a 5K and will be walking a few more this year. You can ABSOLUTELY walk a half marathon, people do it all the time. As long as you can finish it in the time alloted, walking is completely acceptable.

C25K is awesome. I started doing it (but have always been interrupted by some kind of health issue. But I got to like week 4 and was probably around 220-230lbs and I could do it just fine. You could definitely do it.

I suggest looking for a walk/run 5k in your area that is in a few months so you have a goal to aim for, and then if while your doing it you are too tired to keep running, you won't feel bad about walking. I did my first one a couple years ago-- What a feeling of accomplishment. I just gotta get back to it again! I little harder now that I have an infant!!!

Hey there! My first real post to the team. woo hooo!

Anyway...I have a friend that is getting motivated to exercise now. (yay!) and we have been talking about marathons and 1/2 marathons. My comment was "I could Never do that! I can't run!" So my first question is...I would love to hear from people that started running. and how did you start? how heavy were you when you first started? advice?

My second question is...
I walk..a lot and pretty fast. My husband seems to think that I could do a 1/2 marathon now! (eeek) I say that you have to run. But I really don't know. Anyone?

Thanks!
Laura
