This is a bit late but just for the record. Yes, most/all of the weight is water weight. AND, the reason you feel more hungry is that when it is TOM, your metabolism increases causing you to feel more hungry. It all will pass.

BECCANURSE: Yep, it'll go away...it's not a permanent situation...keep your chin up! It's a fluke for me to lose weight this time...normally during TOM I gain like crazy.

Having said in an earlier post I wasn't going to weigh myself during my TOM, curiosity got the better of me this morning and I weighed in...only to discover I've lost a pound! Whoo hoo!

A lot of it depends on your relationship with the scale. I personally still weigh and measure during that TOM but I know that there may be a gain and I understand and accept that its because of it being my TOM and not because of anything else. If your moods are affected by what you see on the scale however, it might be better for you if you don't weigh.

I think when I'm next due my TOM I'm not going to bother doing a weigh in. I used to, and it's an exercise in frustration. I've been going so well that I don't want to feel genuinely defeated because the scale is registering extra lbs because I'm retaining water due to TOM.

I was able to swear off most junk pretty easily but now I have ate quite a lot of chocolate and just munched out in general this past week. Since I am new to Spark this is my first TOM since I started eating right and I was just worried that I would slip back into my old habits, but I am still logging everything I eat, even if it's depressing.

A lot of weight gain during that part of the month is water weight. Your body retains the water while going through TOM and releases it afterwards. I learned that in my nursing class. I also learned that 8 oz of water is about .5 pounds. So don't weigh yourself after drinking a bunch of water because it will be off by a bit

I usually weigh myself, but try not to let it upset me. Typically despite gaining a little during my cycle I've usually lost 2-5 pounds the next week. Do not let it upset you. It's part of the journey. Keep up the good work!!

As far as eating, I have been BAD this week. However, I'm not letting it bring me down. Yesterday I have a cupcake and a full size candy bar. Hormones suck! And they appear to completely inhibit my brain. Maybe sneak in a extra workout this week to try and balance everything.

Well, I can't seem to stop myself from my daily weigh ins, even if I know it would do my psyche some good. In the last week, I have gained 8 flipping pounds. I don't have a regular cycle because of my IUD, but every now and again, when my cycle would be... I swell up like a Macy's Thanksgiving Day balloon. I *know* that it isn't real weight and that there is NO WAY I ate the calories to gain 8 lbs of fat in 2 days. But, darn it, if it isn't frustrating. I go up 2 lbs, work my butt off, go down two pounds the next day, then up 2.5, down 1.5 and so on and so forth. Since I only have to deal with it every 6-8 months, I have to deal with it for a couple of weeks... It will go away again, I know it will... I just have to keep my head on straight and stay on track...which means, I will still weigh in. But, to be honest, I probably won't change my ticker tomorrow for my official Friday weigh in!! I will wait until next Friday and for things to settle down a bit!

Imperfection is important. If we were all perfect, then there would be no such thing as growth, and everyone would be extremely boring, which is, paradoxically, not that perfect.-- Dr. Matt

Because this is a journey, I found it helpful to see the patterns over time including TOM gains...it is reassuring to look back month after month and see that the small gain does come off when TOM leaves.

Red ribbon in the typewriter! I haven't heard that one before :)

I am usually up a few lbs but I have been an absolute Nazi with myself about weighing and measuring food and tracking every calorie that for the first time ever I am still down a couple lbs on the day of Aunt Flo's arrival.. I've been extra careful about getting plenty of water and staying in calorie range and all that hoo-hah and its paying off. But like I said - that has never happened to me before in all my years of yo-yo dieting so I'm not sure if its a fluke or if I'm really doing something that different this time around.

ANYWAY - I would say continue to weigh in as normal and just know there's a good reason for less than spectacular results and you'll catch up soon.. do NOT let it get you down, its totally normal.

I feel the same as LEWISCANDACE.
Sure, the scale is super mean and evil to me when the red ribbon's in the typewriter... and the week before... and a couple days after...
But I already know that
And so do you!
I still weigh myself because I know to expect no change or a slight increase, but if there's a big incerease from a little extra chocolate or some less than accurate measuring of my salty snack foods... it reminds me that I need to be accountable to myself, even when it's hard.
But I don't measure during those times... that's just mean!

That TOM is horrible for me too. I usually gain 2 or 3 pounds the week of mine. But the next week I usually lose it all and then some. Hang in there. I weigh myself during that TOM and just keep in mind that I am going to weigh more! I won't measure myself during that time! Keep in mind that it is usually water weight during that time too.

Should I just skip weighing and measuring when I am on my monthly cycle?? It is just depressing to see the scale STUCK, or moving UP.

I have not lost a single pound in more than a week, I feel like I will never reach my goals at this rate. PLUS when I am on my cycle I want to eat like a pig! Went over on my calories by more than 400!!
