DD is home from college this weekend, and we went thrift shopping yesterday.
I got a coat - L.L. Bean - charcoal gray wool - for $7. Woot!

Good morning, everyone!

I logged on this morning, and am planning a circuit training workout today.
I also have an extensive To-Do list to tackle.

Have a good one, all!

Yesterday, I had a bunch of bad news: a death in a family of a friend, a very sick current friend (critical condition in the hospital), and I felt a little out of control. I did eat too many cookies, but recognized it as I was doing it, immediately tracked all of the food, and decided that I'm still practicing my new habits. I forgave myself on the spot.

For me, this is a huge victory.

Happy Sunday! It's beautiful here in Memphis today. El TJ and I got out for a lovely 45 minute walk this morning before breakfast, before MY breakfast that is. He ate his at 5:30 am.

It was lovely outside. We had to reschedule our Friday night board game night for Saturday night this week due to a friends birthday get together. As a result, we missed the Memphis atheists group anniversary get together at the Young Ave Deli in midtown. :( our friends who went said it was packed and atheists came out of the woodwork! Woo hoo.

Tomorrow night is movie night at Heathen Hovel. We can make that so it should be good. The movie will be bad, as usual. I think the last movie was Nymphoid Cave Women in Dinosaur Hell. Quality stuff. Lol.

Off to grocery shop!
Woo hoo!

I've been in Brazil for nearly a month. Just returned 2 days ago.

I managed to gain 4 lbs. while traveling. Considering that I traveled part of the time with people with physical problems who preferred buses and taxis to walking, my hosts pushed food on me every minute of the day, I had no way of measuring food at private homes or restaurants, no access to a gym, Brazilians eat lots of fruit but few vegetables, plus the many delicious and exotic flavors of Brazilian ice cream, I consider my 4-lb gain less than I expected. I weigh about 15 lbs less than when I got married in 1985 ---so I'm still feeling pretty good about myself.

If I had been able to exercise as I do at home, I think I could have eaten exactly what I ate without gaining weight ---which makes me think I'll do OK once I reach my goal as long as I keep my activity level up.

Yesterday I was back at the gym and tracking my food again, although I went over my allotment of calories. It will probably take me a few days to get back into a routine.

I had wanted to lose 12 more lbs (now 16 with my gain of 4) by the end of the year ---about a lb a week. I should be able to manage that.

Have a great time, Stormy. I've never been to South America at all. It would be great to go. I'd love to be strong enough and to have the bank book to go to the Galapagos.

DOULTON:

I'm going to Brazil next month. I expect that most of the people will be just as religious as they were 40 years ago when I lived there. The one difference will be that back then nearly everyone was Catholic. Now the Evangelicals & Mormons have gained ground. I think the last figure I heard was about 20%.

But there are also a lot of people who believe in Afro-Brazilian religions (Candomble and Umbanda) as well as Christianity. It does become rather confusing.

Having a better day today. I did have a bit of a binge, but I got over it.
I might skip dinner, because I feel a bit icky.
My gym buddy is sick today, which means I'll have to do some training at home tonight. Hopefully my husband won't mind me doing kettlebell intervals in the lounge!

Today I had to face one of the consequences of being an atheist.
When you do something wrong, the only person who can forgive you is the person you've wronged, and unlike Jesus, they won't always forgive you.
This is especially true when the person you've wronged is yourself.
At any rate, I'm hoping I'll grow as a result of this incident.
Things would be easier if I could just confess to a priest or something, but then I wouldn't necessarily become a better person.

At any rate, I have been having a day of not doing what I should have done. Honestly, my whole week's been this way.
I've trapped myself in a toxic guilt spiral of procrastination and poor time management. My priorities are out of whack and I know I have to change that.
I just don't know how. It all seems so overwhelming right now.
The only thing that seems to be on track is my diet and exercise.

I know this isn't my place to whinge, but I'm feeling pretty low today and I felt like maybe venting here help me get through this.

My plan is to get what I can do tonight done, go to bed early (start reading my new Discworld book), and get up at sunrise.
I'll do as much as I can in the morning, then go on with my day tomorrow, and try to act like I am the person I want to be.

I just returned from Scotland (12 days) and while I am hardly an expert, people speak of the old strict religions as if they were an historical curiosity, and not something that could possibly pertain to today. It was great to get away from US politics and bible-thumping for a while, but then the "phacking" scandal reminds me a lot of the various dirty tricks employed in US politics.

Hello, all! Just dropping by, hope everyone is having a great weekend so far.

One of the downsides to working from home as an independent contractor is that sometimes you have to make up your hours whenever you can...this is one of those weekends for us. :( I used to work from home, but now my husband does and I take care of our 3-year-old son...so this weekend has been just like a Monday for us so far. Ugh!

My parents go back and forth between Sonoma, California and London, UK. It just so happens that this year, they are only home (in Sonoma) during peak season and we can't afford to visit them then. It works out cheaper to visit in London in October, which works for my husband since he has a lot of friends there. It makes it a pleasant trip for both of us, not just a visit to my parents, which is fun, but it's not really a trip for him, just a trip for me.

Envious of those travel plans!
I'm planning a trip to London in October, which should be interesting with a toddler. We're staying with my parents there, so at least the husband and I should be able to get some time to explore on our own.
I can't wait! I so miss travelling, but it will be a few more years before I get the chance to go to any exotic locations.

Update on my oral surgery. (It's been 3 weeks now.) The swelling is gone. The stitches are out. Nothing hurts except every once in a while I move my face a certain way and a very mild pain travels up my right nostril, but it's gone in a sec.

Now I'm in the process of getting various inoculations against diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis (one shot for all three), hepatitis A, yellow fever and typhoid ---because of an upcoming trip to Brazil. I will also have to take malaria pills for 2 months, starting before I go and extending a month beyond my trip.

I'm also hemoraging money: passport, visa, airline tickets, hotel reservations, new clothes (needed them anyway ---have been wearing huge ones, used ones, or old ones for months, waiting to buy new for my trip) sunscreen, insect repellent, leg wallet.... the list goes on and on ---but picked up a lot of items on sale over the pat 6 months.

But I'm sure it will be worth it. I used to live there ---haven't been back in 40+ years. It will be fun to visit old friends and former students. My two regrets were that I never visited the Amazon region or Iguaçu Falls. Since this may be my very last chance ----I'm doing both this time.

Yikers! I might have to have similar surgery soon, and now I'm really not looking forward to it. I also need to have a wisdom tooth out, but I don't have a local dentist.
Anyway, my son has been picking up every winter bug possible and passing it on to me and my husband. Not fun!
But on the plus side, the move went well and I'm back on track to my fitness goals.
I'm hoping to make SparkPeople part of my daily routine again, to stay focused.
Hooray!

In 2008, I wrote a humorous essay in response to a writing prompt to "tell about your worst dental experience, ever" about having my wisdom teeth pulled when I lived in Brazil. (Actually the procedure itself went fine. It was the getting home when I was all doped up on an anesthetic that was the problem.) I called it "What Price, Wisdom?" That story can be found here:
http://alittlepeaceofbrazil.blogspot.com
/2008/12/what-price-wisdom_13.html

As of last Friday, I have a new dental story. I had oral surgery to repair receding gums.

Despite following instructions to keep ice on my face most of the day, by Saturday morning, a pale violet bruise had spread half way down my neck and half the distance from my mouth to my right ear and my face had swollen so I looked like a chipmunk with cheeks full of seeds. By Saturday night, I also had a black eye and the bruises weren't a pale violet anymore, they were a deep reddish purple.

I am afraid to leave the house. My face is really awful enough to scare children. Although the swelling has gone down, from a distance much of my face & neck look like raw meat. I am concerned that neighbors might call the police to report possible domestic abuse. But, the only one who beat me up was my dentist.

My dental plan didn't cover the procedure.

Imagine putting out about 1 and a half month's of my Social Security payment to be tortured! What was I thinking?

"What Price, Stupidity?"

You can read a longer version of this story and see photos at:

-price-stupidity.html

I am looking forward to the three day weekend. I am at 169 pounds today and will try to stick with the healthy eating over the long holiday weekend. The weather is wonderful so I should be able to get in some nice long bike rides.

It's Monday again and surprise surprise, no rapture. I finished the first week in my new plan. I reset all my settings to lower my calorie range and am hitting the amount everyday while doing lots of strength training. My weight stayed the same,170. I will be happy with that weight as long as I lose the last of the fat and build up more muscle. I hope everyone has a great week!

If you want a truly secular society, come to England, especially the London and south east areas, nobody will even ask about your religion or mention it to you. Of course you in turn have to live amongst people who are not necessarily Christian, even the lapsed sort. One of my next door neighbours is sri lankan and they are Hindu. They are nice friendly people, trying to settle here away from civil war in their own country. I have plateau'd at the moment. I need to eat more slowly so that I feel full more quickly, and just keep off the scales and get on with it. Too easy to get obsessed with the numbers. I have a kitchen door and surround to paint today. I don't ever work out, it's a waste of energy, like filling your car with petrol and then leaving it running on the drive for a few hours! I do however love swimming, so I will do an hour of that later and my first karate class in 30yrs this evening, that's going to be interesting. My son is a first dan and he runs a later class so he persuaded me. He'll get a kick up the bum if he's got it wrong and I'm crippled!

I live in Texas and we are in a draught. Just a couple of weeks ago a huge part of the state was on fire, so any rain is fantastic. Maybe we should thank some random invisible being for this blessing, I'm sure it couldn't happen all on its own : ) Thank you Sky Dude!

Everyone have a wonderful Friday the 13TH!

We have been getting a much needed rain for the last two days, so I may have to put off the bike ride and do some cardio kick boxing instead. I miss the park but the flowers are happy!

Thanks for the kind words.

I come from a religious crazy, big fat hillbilly family. They love to point out other peoples faults. The funny thing is, if you are 350 pounds and sitting around shoveling chocolate cake into your face all day wouldn't that make you a glutton? I think their silly little book lists that as a deadly sin. I think I would laugh if it wasn't so very sad.

Sorry about your grandmother.

I totally understand about family. Since my mother died (at age 95 a few years ago) I avoid mine as much as possible. My husband has been avoiding his for much longer. If I could have gotten away with it, I wouldn't even have visited my mother to avoid all the guilt trips she tried to lay on me, but she was going downhill and couldn't do a lot on her own, so I sucked it up and told myself it was the dementia talking. Actually, she may have been harder to deal with before Alzheimer's set in. She had always been super religious.

We are searching for a different place to live now that we are retired ---someplace with more moderate weather than where we are now (very hot summers, very cold winters) ---and if it is across the country or the world (away from relatives) so much the better. We are also taking into consideration that some areas in this country (Oregon, for example) is much more tolerant of secularists, as are many other countries (New Zealand and Uruguay are two we have considered.)

I'm back!

My GrandMother died so I drove up to Tennessee for the funeral. I went out to eat once with my family and was told I need to change my diet because I eat crap. Wow, who knew that salad and tofu were crap. Of course they also reminded me that I am a terrible person and going to burn in hell and am dragging my children with me. Always nice to have a reminder of why I don't see my family.

It's good to be back home!

The good news: I just completed my last class for this semester on 5/5/11. My community college offers free credited classes to senior citizens as long as a class is not full, so I have been taking courses on subjects that interest me. I'm not on a path to another degree ---just have an abiding love of learning, Since I don't have to take classes that don't interest me, it's been fun.

The bad news: I'm stuck at a plateau. For 6 weeks I've been going down about 1.5 lbs, then gaining it back, or even a bit more, then losing it again. I admit that I'm tired of tracking food (although I still do it) and miss a few things I really love to eat. Although I've never given up my favorites completely, I've given in to them more than usual. And, I guess at this stage (I've lost more than 30% of my beginning weight) I need to eat less of everything.

The good news: I'm planning a trip to Brazil in a few months. I lived there over 40 years ago and have forgotten a lot of Portuguese, so I play Portuguese CDs from the library on my computer. Although I don't pay close attention while typing, I am getting used to the sounds of the language and inflections of words again. I listen more closely when I am just playing solitaire or other games online,.

The bad news: If I don't get back on the program that bathing suit a bought one size smaller than I needed 2 months ago, may not fit.

The good news: Even now, I have the courage to wear a bathing suit ---haven't worn one for at least a decade.

I weighed myself this morning and was surprised to see I was 2 pounds down from my official weight on Monday. Now I just have to try and be good over the weekend so that I can move my football closer to my goal on Monday.

Everyone have a great weekend!

I had a great weekend! We celebrated the pagan holiday of Easter by hunting the eggs and eating a small child. Just kidding : ) I also mowed the lawn, but fortunately I have no allergies. We got a little rain today so cooler this morning. We will have a clear day with a high temp of 88 so looks like a bike ride for this afternoon. Everyone have a great week!

Saturday was good and I got to meet up with a good friend for coffee. Then I decided to mow the law, which then triggered allergies and a wonderful migraine that lasted all through Sunday. I hope others had a better weekend! :)

The weather is better hear today than it was yesterday and we are supposed to hit the mid-50's today. I'm thinking about getting out the push mower and mowing the lawn for the first time this season tonight (since it is supposed to be rainy again for the rest of the week).

My knees are a little sore today, but doing good over all. I was supposed to take my daughter bike riding but I had a flat and my pump is broken. We went to the park and I jogged along with her. I hate to run! It was a nice day here in the Lone Star state. 93 degrees with a little breeze blowing to help keep you cool. I like the park. You get to run through the trees listening to the birds. We had a large snake cross the path in front of us so we stopped to watch him slither away. I hope everyone is having a great day!

Well, I woke up very early this morning to some pretty hard thunderstorms, followed by a blasting of hail, and then some more thunderstorms. But luckily it was all over by a little before 8:00 a.m. And while it is supposed to be cold and rainy here all day today, I am just happy that it isn't snowing!

Ordered myself some Zumba workouts yesterday and I'm trying to incorporate more stretching and yoga too. I hope it helps with my energy, pain levels and weight too! :)

I'm trying to stay positive with my weight loss goals but I'm just getting frustrated. My eating hasn't been horrible (not stellar either though) and I've been making a good effort to be more active...yet my weight either goes up or stays the same!

I know that I've had a lot of other things going on which affect my weight loss (such as stress, change in meds, hormonal stuff, totally messed up sleep, etc.) but it just sucks to not see any change in the scale (or worse and its going up!).

I just try to remind myself that this is a long term challenge and not an overnight race. It took me several years to reach this level and it is going to take a long time to make the significant changes that are required to lose weight and keep it off for the rest of my life. So, I'm trying to stay positive!

Thanks for letting me vent! :)

My sleep has been horrible lately and even though I'm not doing too bad with my eating, my weight just isn't headed in the right direction!!! But I did just finish a nice 35 min. bike ride around the neighborhood and that felt good!

How is everyone doing/feeling?? I'm doing okay. I'm slowly getting back in the swing of things and back on track.

I didn't do a whole lot this weekend but I did get some much needed rest and played way too much Rock Band on the Wii! And I'm pumped to do it some more because I picked up Rock Band 3 at Target yesterday for only $19.99 and I can't wait to try it out tonight. I'm such a nerd but it is so much fun! :)

I've had a really rough couple of weeks. My grandfather's health took a bad turn and unfortunately, he went downhill very quickly and then passed away this past weekend. So, I have been travelling a lot recently and was lucky enough to be able to spend time with him while he was still cracking jokes and being his regular self and then had to make another trip back for a funeral.

So, my diet and exercise routines have been thrown totally out the window. And my weight is up about 3 pounds. I'm back home and at work again, so hopefully I can get my routine back on track and get things moving in the right direction!

Yeah, RENAE, it isn't easy sticking to the program while we travel. Much less keeping up with the reporting. SP referenced an article about the use PDAs to help people record their intake. --Some people were given PDAs that provided info about the foods people were eating.
--The second group was given PDAs that could just record the foods.
--The third group recorded their intake with paper and pencil only.

The group that did the best was the firsst group. The study's authors don't know why that group did better, but speculated that that gp was able to look up foods before they were eaten.

So, would such a PDA help you on your trips. Or come to think of it, would it help me. DW Dorothy and I are traveling like heck while we still can.
_____________

Doing OK td. Have to be careful, bc I had breakfast with a friend, which throws off my recording. Plus, I always take him and his family some coffee cake and I have a generous dose of it.

Walked about 40 min yd, legs looser and less painful.
