ADAMS, JOHN, 1st Vice-president, 2nd U.S. President (1735-1826):

• “As I understand the Christian religion, it was, and is, a revelation. But how has it happened that millions of fables, tales, legends, have been blended with both Jewish and Christian revelation that have made them the most bloody religion that ever existed?” (Letter to F. A. Van der Kamp, December 27, 1816)

• “I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved -- the Cross. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced.” (Letter to Thomas Jefferson, 2000 years of Disbelief, James A. Haught, ed.)

• “Let the human mind loose. It must be loose. It will be loose. Superstition and dogmatism cannot confine it.” (Letter to his son, John Quincy Adams, November 13, 1816, 2000 years of Disbelief, James A. Haught, ed.)

I needed a good chuckle this morning! A few ad my husband laughing.

We also discussed Ben Franklin and the Funding Fathers of the Unite States. How may of them were truly religious? Obviously Ben Franklin was not. Could be a good history study.

Thanks for brightening my day.

Religion is like a male sex organ - It's OK to have one, and you can even be proud of it, but don't try to ram it down other people's throats.

Sam Harris (Letter to a Christian Nation)

“It is safe to say that almost every person living in New Orleans at the moment Hurricane Katrina struck shared...belief in an omnipotent, omniscient, and compassionate God. But what was God doing while Katrina laid waste to their city? Surely He heard the prayers of those elderly men and women who fled the rising waters for the safety of their attics, only to be slowly drowned there. These were people of faith. These were good men and women who had prayed throughout their lives. Do you have the courage to admit the obvious? These people died talking to an imaginary friend.”

All of the following are taken from the sayings of Lazarus Long, a fictional character created by Robert Heinlein.
Sources: Time Enough for Love (1973) and/or The Notebooks of Lazarus Long (1978)

“Any priest or shaman must be presumed guilty until proved innocent.”

“Everything in excess! To enjoy the flavor of life, take big bites. Moderation is for monks.”

“God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent ---it says so right here on the label. If you have a mind capable of believing all three of these divine attributes simultaneously, I have a wonderful bargain for you. No checks, please. Cash and in small bills.”

“History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it.”

“It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics.”

“Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a god superior to themselves. Most gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child.”

Robert G. Ingersoll, American Civil War veteran, political leader, orator (1833-1899)

"A believer is a bird in a cage, a freethinker is an eagle parting the clouds with tireless wing."
("Individuality" 1873)

Many years ago, I visited a restaurant in Pittsburgh (Max's Allegheny Tavern.) The menu's cover held an image of a newspaper from the late 1800's. Down in the corner was an announcement of Ingersoll's upcoming appearance.

Ingersoll was often referred to as The Great Infidel. He traveled the country appearing in sold-out lectures. (In the 1800's, lectures were one of the main forms of entertainment.) He often gave lectures of several hours in length with no notes. Walt Whitman considered him the greatest orator of his time. (Ingersoll delivered Whitman's eulogy.)

Two by Mark Twain on Missionaries:

"Wherever the missionary goes he not only proclaims that his religion is the best one, but that it is a true one while his hearer's religion is a false one; that the pagan's gods are inventions of the imagination; that the things and the names which are sacred to him are not worthy of his reverence; that his fathers are all in hell, and the dead darlings of his nursery also, because the word which saves had not been brought to them; that he must now desert his ancient religion and give allegiance to the new one or he will follow his fathers and his lost darlings to the eternal fires. The missionary must teach these things, for he has his orders; and there is no trick of language, there is no art of words, that can so phrase them that they are not an insult." (as reported in: "The Missionary in World-Politics," Who Is Mark Twain?, 2009)

“O, compassionate missionary leave China! Come home and convert these Christians.” ("The United States of Lyncherdom," by Mark Twain, 1901)
This latter quote was written in an essay remarking that nearly all lynchings were perpetrated by white Christian men.

I got this one from one of the speakers at the Global Atheist Con in Melbourne last year:

"Atheism is a passionate engagement with the world and with love" - Ian Robinson

It's all positive and touchy feely. There's not enough of that in most atheist groups and I think a lot of us need it once in a while.

"All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others." - Douglas Adams

If I look over my life, every single step of maturing for me--every single one--has had the exact same common denominator: and that was accepting what was true over what I wished were true.

This isn't a "good" quote. It is a horrible quote, but it speaks volumes:

Andrew Sandlin, writing for the Chalcedon Foundation, calls for Christian believers to pray to God to exterminate those who think differently from themselves:

"God extends his grace to his people (and mankind in general) when he destroys the wicked, because in destroying the wicked, he is averting their evil works that so plague God's children and mankind in general. When he maims and kills cultists and theological liberals, he prevents the spread of heretical doctrine that damns souls...God's judgment -- not his favor -- leads the world to righteousness. We should petition God's judgment on the wicked because judgment is a form of grace."

So much blood has been shed by the Church because of an omission from the Gospel: "Ye shall be indifferent as to what your neighbor's religion is." Not merely tolerant of it, but indifferent to it. Divinity is claimed for many religions; but no religion is great enough or divine enough to add that new law to its code. ---Mark Twain

We despise all reverences and all the objects of reverence which are outside the pale of our own list of sacred things. And yet, with strange inconsistency, we are shocked when other people despise and defile the things which are holy to us. ---Mark Twain (Following the Equator)

Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion--several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven. -----Mark Twain

After much consideration, I have decided to tolerate only those religions that do not name me an abomination before a nebulous God and call for my destruction.
