emoticon Question of the Day for Aug 18th emoticon

Do you think young children should eat meats until they reach a certain age when they can choose whether or not they want to NOT eat meat, or limit their meat consumption, or do you think it is best for children to eat vegan or vegetarian from the very beginning?

for DH, as long as i put plant-based in front of him he eats it - and loves it. for guests, i try to serve the most delicious food i can and they usually walk away impressed - and often ask for the recipe. otherwise, i just set the example and answer the question of "why" when they ask me.

Well recently I suggested to a friend of mine to go vegetarian on Facebook and this morning I suggested to another member of Spark to do it too. I'm just suggesting no big deal. They can ignore me completely!!!! I suggest that it is a good way to lose weight. I've lost 6 lbs since June 26th! Woo hoo! I only do it if they mention they want to lose weight and I am only suggesting. I would never make it into a big deal! I've talked to people in public too and if they say they can never do that I just drop the subject. So far no fights!!!

Guess I'd best be looking into this Sansone person...

I like belly dancing when I feel in shape enough to do so. And I love water jogging. I have to make an effort to do that more often (but taking two hours out of my day is a challenge.)

Because I have balance problems, I workout almost exclusively with Leslie Sansone. i like this one Tai Chi lady on Youtube. And there is a whole SLEW of Youtube exercise programs by a company called Fitness Blender, I can do a few of those. I only workout in my bedroom where my hard drive is when it is cool enough though. Otherwise I workout in the living room. When it is cooler I will take walks outside.

I have a question What is Your Favorite Exercise?

I liked riding on my recumbent bike at my mom's house but when I got my apartment I could not take it with me. Now I have one of Leslie Sansone's DVDs and that is one option. I just bought Time's The Science of Exercise. Pretty expensive but at $14 or so but I'm hoping to get some much needed knowledge and motivation.

Thanks!

I want to buy watermelon now. I like the fruit cup you can get at the Park Diner where I go every other Friday night with my depression group. It is always different but good.

Is the question about meatless Monday question of the day? I do flex plan and eat as I go. Which is bad...need to learn how to cook! A project.

Just watermelon straight up. It is THE summer fruit, I know plenty of other fruits are ripe right now, but watermelon is so partial to the 4th of July in my experience. I have really been enjoying eating watermelon on other days in the summer this year, not just for that holiday. I buy the "personal size" watermelons.

Oof. My mom and aunt rated every food constantly as "good" or "bad" so I try to get out of that mindset.

But my favorite nutrient-rich foods are bright, colorful salads with chick peas and a wide variety of veggies. Also love pickles and pickled things. Mmmm.

Since rising to vegan, I am no longer tempted by my old achilles heals of greasy meat. I guess potato chips and corn chips sing my name on occasion...

emoticon Question of the "Day" for August 4th emoticon

What's your "good" food and what's your "naughty" food?

emoticon vs. emoticon

C'mon, we all have a food we think is delicious that just happens to be good for us, and another one that is also delicious but not-so-healthy. I figure out how to eat just about anything I want to by either increasing my workout OR using a substitute that tastes as good if not better than the "naughty".

So, I love bananas (good AND healthy) but I also love ice cream. Which can be VERY heavy on the fat and calorie components. I work with my cravings instead of saying, no, you can't have that. That way, I don't feel deprived nor am I punishing myself for being, well, normal.

I do not like soy yogurt. EEWWW,

Sunnycaligirl- The job search is not going well. I had an interview but they had the wrong resume and I seem to have landed someone else's interview. They then almost bust a gut when I told them my salary requirement. The interview then took a turn when they asked about my ability to speak Russian. They made an inappropriate comment about me helping Trump and then they apologized. I think that it is for the best that it did not work out. The search continues. I am working out at lunch with a coworker though and this has helped.

emoticon Daily Question of the Day for July 14th emoticon

Edamame, beans, tofu, seitan, wheat meat, soy yogurt, almond milk, nut milk, rice milk, kefir--there are all kinds of products I am eating now that I never heard of when I was a kid (that would be the 60s and 70s)...

What specific vegan/vegetarian product or even vegetable have you tried that you don't like? And if a recipe calls for it, what do you use instead?

Mine would be goat cheese. I HATE goat cheese. If it's in a recipe, I just use feta cheese instead (sheep or cow or buffalo). Or, vegan cheese. Have to be careful with vegan cheese, it has a much higher sodium content generally than dairy cheese.

emoticon Question of the Day for July 7th emoticon

Actually, I have two questions. Are you figuring out what fruits and vegetables you ate (Eat the Rainbow) on the 1st, 2nd. 3rd, or 4th of this month, July? I posted the rules under Team Challenges, because the deadline for notifying me by Spark Mail is Midnight PST (I live in California) Saturday the 8th, so I guess if you live on the East Coast you have until 5 am Sunday morning and if you live in another country...you can figure it out! I would really be disappointed if no one participated in this Challenge, because it is so EASY to figure out. Please read the "Rules" if you haven't already.

My second question is, did you know that the Red Banner points are back?? Support your team by clicking on it's red banner and then post your results in the message board I have created under Team Challenges.

No, I don't find that to be true at all. The farmer's market is more expensive. Although the local farmer's market (which meets in two places, one is at city hall, and the other in the parking lot of a shopping mall strip) supposedly accepts food stamps, which I do not get anyways. When I moved to California from the Chicago area 18 years ago, I was just shocked by how much more expensive food is here in CA than in IL, period. California calls itself the agricultural heartland, which made me laugh when I moved here, because this is a coastal state and I am from the true geographical heartland of our country, the Midwest small prairie states. WISCONSIN calls itself the agricultural Heartland, and I don't find that at all strange. But then, I grew up in that area of the country.

Now that I can't drive, going to the farmer's market is even more inconvenient than it has been. It is inconvenient in my town because it was on Wednesdays (too busy) and on Saturdays (which is my day of worship).

Are your local farmer's markets more affordable for produce than the grocery store, yay or nay?

Re: recipes - "d. All of the above."

That said, I am trying to reduce the amount of stuff I keep, so I am doing my best to go digital moving forward - typing in all the recipes in my box, and buying ebooks.

emoticon Question of the Day for June 5th emoticon

Do you prefer recipes from the Internet or from a cookbook? Do you have a box of recipe cards that you inherited? Do you prefer to create your own recipes or use recipes that are already written down?

We have a lot of Thai restaurants where I live in California. And I believe there is one that is either Vietnamese or Laotian. I think I have a tendency to stick to vegetarian pad thai, but the thing I remember most is trying and liking bubble tea a few years back. One day after work when I attended college in Chicago, I took myself out to dinner. I had never eaten at a full-scale restaurant on a higher-up level of a high-rise, and it was a thai restaurant--fine dining of course, and the only thing on the menu I could afford as a college student was the pad thai!

We don't have a vegan/vegetarian restaurant where I live but there is a Thai restaurant I frequent. It's locally owned and they make all food fresh to order. My son knows the owner. I usually get a spicy noodle dish that uses a ton of veggies and sweet potato noodles. You can choose your "protein" and I have gotten it with tofu.

I would like to see a vegan restaurant here. Too many chains here.

emoticon "Daily" Question of the Day for May 31st emoticon

Do you eat at an established exclusively vegan/vegetarian restaurant, fast food joint, or food truck (they exist) where you live? What is your favorite menu item?

OR..if no such place to eat is in your location, what type would you like to see?
