In eleven days: February 22, 2020 Spring Training exhibition games begin when the Astros face the WS Champions (I know ;0( Washington Nationals in a 2-game series.

It has been a really up and down (mostly down) off season and I am really looking forward to putting the entire cheating scandal behind us.

Myself, I am trying to avoid a lot of the negative press that is just rampant and stay looking to the future and keeping a positive mindset. Sure hope the players are doing the same.

Go Astros! Let's make 2020 a real year to remember.

OMG! This is big news.

The Astros have made an offer to fre agent . . .Hunter Pence. Cannot beleive this. Hunter has been on the Rangers for the past season. After being traded to the Phillies in 2011 Pence landed in San Fransisco in 2012 where he won 2 WS titles while with the Giants.

Hmmmm, He is 36 years old and plays outfield. Not really sure what position he can fill. He was the DH for Texas last season. We now have Yordon Alvarez for DH. I thought that Miles Straw was going to get a chance to replace Jake Marisnick's place on the roster.

We will have to wait and see what comes of this news.

I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yersterday.

Okay. Last night the new General Manager was announced.

Jim Crane has hired James Crick to take over the position that was Jeff Lunhow's. Crick was the VP of Baseball Operations for the Tampa Bay Rays and was instrumental in building that team. We all know how good the Rays are.

Click knows all the new school analytics that the Astros use and has plans to keep improving on that system. That makes me feel very excited and confident that this team is still poised to be winning a lot of games.

Welcome to H-Town James Click!

Go Astros! 2020 is our year!

Houston! We have a manger.

Dusty Baker was hired as the replacement for AJ HInch. More details will emerge when the team formally announces the news.

So glad we got someone hired and I really hope he can keep these guys on the right track. He seems like a real no-nonsense guy and that should be good for us moving forward from here.

Lots of Astros news in the media lately. A lot of negativeity from other clubs who beleive the team has no remorse over the 2017 scandal.

Jim Crane has stated that the team will issue a formal apology once they are all gathered in Florida for Spring training. That makes sense to me. Everyone should be present and everyone should discuss this situation and agree to move forward. Hopefully, this will start the process of putting it all behind us.

The team announced the non-roster invitees to Spring Training. There are 19 of them, 3 are catchers, 7 are pitchers and that group includes Forrest Whitley. I am excitied to see Alex De Goti and Nick Tanilu on the list. Both of them were stand outs last year. De Goti even got the call to come to Houston last season during the invasion of the pulled hamstring. Other 2019 standouts have already made the team, Yordon Alvarez and Abraham Toro quickly come to mind.

Spring Training begins in less than a month!

Hope to be writing about our new manager in the coming days.

The team held their annual black tie gala at MMP Friday night. Everyone seemed in good spirits. Good! We need to move on and stay positive.

Fanfest is today. Actually started a few minutes ago. I'm not going down there but am curious to see what the media reports will be.

I also saw on the news that Biggio, Bagwell and Berkman have all reached out to the team and offered to help in any way they may be needed during these days of seemingly scrambling to find managerial leadership.

I don't know if they are offering advice, or to be the manager. I'd take any one of them in any capacity. Love the Killer B's.

Go Astros! 2020 is going to be a great year. Keep your heads up and your eyes on the prize.

Can't wait for Spring Training and to put this crazy off season behind us for good. emoticon

So sorry to hear that CArlos Beltran was let go by the Mets. The MLB said it would not punish players but I guess the Mets had other ideas. emoticon

Staying positive in the wake of adversity is a challenge sometimes but we as fans don;t have near the challenge the players have to overcome.

Hanging in there and sending positive vibes to all the guys.

Hmmm. Of course the local news is all over the Astros breaking news of late. The station I was watvhing showed a tweet from Roy Oswalt that made me wonder who he was talking about. My guess is former teammate Roger Clemons who is on the ballot for the 2020 HOF class, or Barry Bond who also made the list.

The announcement of who actually gets into the Baseball Hall of Fame this time around will be made next week. Personally, I like Clemons and think he sparked more interest in Houston Baseball when he was with us for those few years.

Well today the long-awaited hammer came down.

The MLB made its ruling in the sign-stealing scandal.

It was ruled that the team used electronic equipment to steal signs in the 2017 season. Whew!! They were looking at the past three seasons. I guess they didn't find any evidence for 2018 or 2019. The report said that there was not sufficient evidence to say that the cheating helped the team win the World Series in 2017. Since they won in Los Angeles, I doubted they would make that determination.

So the team has been fined $5 million. ouch!

I think what hurts even more is the loss of first and second round draft picks for 2020 and 2021. I know that trades often involve draft picks and wonder if that will be affected. Can they still trade for someone elses first round pick?

Heads also rolled. AJ Hinch and Jeff Lunhow were both handed suspensions for the 2020 season. Then Jim Crane went a step further and fired the both of them.

So now we will be getting a new General Manager and a new Team Manager. I look forward to a fresh start with a new manager this year. Hope we get someone really good who knows how to win.

In the free agency news we learned yesterday that Hector Rondon went to the Arizona Diamonbacks. Glad he got a job. He is a great pitcher and did a good job for us.

Recap on the rest of the free agents and where did they land:

Gerritt Cole - signed a 9 year $324 million deal with the New York Yankees

Robinson Chirinos - signed a one year deal with the Texas Rangers for $5.75 million with an option for 2021 worth $6.75. Sad to see him go but very happy for him to get back to his old team.

Wade Miley - signed a two year deal with the Cincinatti Reds for $15 million dollars. I beleiver Tony Kemp aslo landed in Cincincatti. Good luck!

Will Harris - signed a three year deal with the reigning World Series Champions the Washington Nationals last Friday. The deal is worth $24 million. Harris is one of the best releivers in the game. Glad he got on a contending team.

Joe Smith - the Astros re-signed Joe Smith for 2 years and $8 million. Yea! We actually got one of our pitchers back.

Chris Devinski - the Astros originally were not going to pick up the option for 2020 with Devinski but then they did. He will get $2 million for 2020, which is more than he got in 2019. Devo! You are worth more than that to me.

Hector Rondon - as mentioned above, Rondon was signed by the Diamondbacks for one year worth $3 million and an option for 2021 worth $2.5 million.

Martin Maldonado - We (The Astros) got Maldonado back for 2 more years and he will be paid $3.5 million each year.

Collin McHugh - So far McHugh has not been signed for the 2020 season. Sad! He is really good. We should get him back. We need him.

Okay! Let's hope we get a top notch skipper for our team!

The latest updates are we have a catcher for the next 2 seasons and his name is Martin Maldonado! El Machete Returns. Sounds like a Danny Trejo movie. I am happy we signed an experienced catcher who knows our team. Wish it could have been Chirinos but I am very satisfied with who we ended up with. Rumor is Maldonado even took less money from the Astros than he was offered from other teams because he wants to play here. emoticon

Also, this morning I saw that Dallas Keuchel signed a 3 year contract with the Chicago White Sox worth 55.5 million! Wow! That is a lot more than he got for that one season with Atlanta last year ($2 mil) I am happy for Keuchel. He is a great pitcher and he deserves a nice contrat. Hope he does great in Chicago. We had a record of 8 W and 8 L with the Braves last season with an ERA of 3.75.

Okay the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together. Our team will be ready for Spring training in a cuple of months. This year is when the rosters are expanding to 26 players. It wil be good to have an extra spot since we have so many great players.

Go Astros! emoticon

I saw on the news this morning that the Astros re-signed Joe Smith for two more years. So we have regained one of the 6 relief pitchers we lost to free agency this season. (I think)

Just looked at the active roster to see if Chris Devinski stayed with the team since that was up in the air at the end of the season. He is on the roster along with several new faces (some without faces/pictures.)

Here are the pitchers I haven't seen mentioned yet. I know some of these were placed on the roster to prevent losing them to the dreaded Rule 5 Draft:

Kent Emmanuel - Left hand pitcher, he was on the Roundrock Express and has been moved to the active roster for now. Emmanuel had 8 wins and 2 losses with the Express last season.

Christian Javier - Right hand pitcher, he had 8 wins and 3 losses playing for 3 teams in the minors last season.

Enoli Paredes - Right hand pitcher, he had 5 wins and 4 losses playing for 2 teams in the minors last season.

Nivaldo Rodriguez - Right hand pitcher, he had 6 wins and 6 losses playing for 2 teams in the minors last season.

Blake Taylor - Left hand pitcher, he had 2 wins and 3 losses playing for 3 minor league teams last season.

Seems like these pitchers are listed on the roster in order of who has the best record.

For other positions, I see Dustin Garneau, who I mentioned earlier when we signed him. He was with the A's last season and was sent to the minors where he played out the remainder of 2019.

Taylor Jones - First baseman who played on the Roundrock Express last season. His batting average is not too shabby at .336.

I also saw that Jack Mayfield is listed on the active roster along with Abraham Toro. Hope these guys get on the Opening Day roster. They did a great job for us last season filling in for all the injured players.

Last but not least for the outfield I see that Miles Straw and Kyle Tucker are on the active roster. I hope to see those two also playing on Opening Day.

Oh yeah, and let us not forget Lance McCullers Jr. He is on the roster and will be pitching for us in 2020 after taking a year off to recover from Tommy John's surgery. He should be a starter not a reliever and he should help us win some games.

Well after looking at the roster list I think we have all the "bases" covered and a full bullpen. Now, we just need to sign a good catcher.

Also saw that Wade Miley signed with the Cincinati Reds. I didn't think we would have re-signed him. Oh well. Miley had a great season for us but ended up chocking at the end when we needed good pitching.

ON another note, I saw that Steve Sparks, the Astros radio announcer had a heart attack last week. So glad he made it and is getting better. Wishing you a speedy recovery Sparky! emoticon

Go Astros! emoticon

Wish I was here writing about all the great players we have signed but I have yet to see any exciting news come through that positively affected our team.

All the news is how other teams landed these awesome players. Rendon (remember from the Nationals) went to the Angels. UUhhhgggg Now we will be seeing a lot of this hometown hero becasue he is now playing in our AL West Division and on a team that could really challenge us for the division. Many of the big name pitchers are all snapped up but we really need relief pitching. . . and catchers still.

The only Astros news was that they are looking at Austin Barnes for the catcher position. Barnes last played for the LA Dodgers as the backup. You know me, I still want Robinson Chirinos back.

There was some news late last week about the sign stealing investigation. The article said that the "infamous" video monitor that was in the hallway was placed there to see replays because the team's video room was too far from the dugout.

The monitor and the camera were both installed with the full knowledge of the MLB and the intended usage of this equipment was legal. It was later that someone on the team realized this equipment could be used to steal signs in real time. Not every player on the team was aware of the scheme (obviously or they would all be batting 1000) This info was given to the MLB by Astros employees that were connected with the equipment and its use.

I still don't know what is going to happen to the team. If there will be fines, suspensions or what? I just hope it all gets over with sooner that later.

Go Astros! emoticon

So the news this morning is that Gerrit Cole signed with the New York Yankees as expected. What was surprising was that they signed him for 9 years! Wow! Hope he can keep it up for that long.

Also the votes are in on the All-MLB team for 2019, which is just a vote for the best players at each position. 6 Astros made the All-MLB team (which doesn't play a game like All-Stars):

Justin Verlander
Gerrit Cole
Zack Greinke
Jose Altuve
Alex Bregman
Yordon Alvarez

This was the first year the MLB held this vote to recognize the top players of the past season,

Glad to see our team getting some love and respect in spite of all the negative publicity.

Hope to have more good news soon.

We need pitching and catching!!

So the news about Marisnick led me to look into the Mets and how JD Davis did wth them last season. Wow! He did awesome, playing 140 games and getting 22 HRs lots of hits and doubles. emoticon Davis is a great player. He just needed playing time. (Also, he says he knows nothing about any sign stealing hhmmm)

I expect Jake Marisnick will also do really good as a Met.

So in other news I just saw that Ryan Pressley got married and (I missed this!) Carlos Correa also got married a couple of weeks ago. Both had courthouse ceremonies. emoticon

No big lavish ceremony like last year's weddings of Justin Verlander (married Kate Upton in Italy) and Josh Reddick and his wild and crazy wedding reception with Rick Flair robes, wrestling belts and spiderman cake.

Glad to see some news about the players at least.

Todays big news is that the Astros traded Jake Marisnick to the New York Mets in exchange for 2 "prospects" I guess that means minor league players.

Happy that Jake will be where he is needed and can play more. Sad to lose him though, he's been in the family for many years. Wishing him all the best in New York. He already knows his new skipper Carlos Beltran. Hope the Mets make a run for the pennant in 2020. I will be watching (at least the highlights) We will miss you Jake!

As I said on the wall, I beielve this means we have room to put Kyle Tucker on the Opening Day roster now. His performance in the 2019 postseason was superb and I think he is ready.

Nothing new to report on the big sign stealing scandal that plagued us for the first few weeks of the offseason. No news is good news? emoticon

One good thing to report today. Abraham Toro was awarded the defensive player of the year for Cnadian players. emoticon He did a great job filling in while Correa was injured. I hope to see him on the roster again next season. . . .maybe in a more permanent place.

Also, I saw reports that Bregman and Marisnick are vacationing in St. Barts with friends and when Bregman was asked about the scandal he laughed it off. I like that he is not worried becasue that means I should not be worried.

There was an article that said the investigation has shown that the supposed sign stealing did not help the team win the 2017 WS. (I just read the headline in passing)

Also, it's looking more and more like Cole will go to New York. I wanted him to go where we don't have to go through him on our road to a title. oh well we were able to beat Morton and we can beat Cole. He proved he is not unbeatable in the 2019 postseason.

Go Astros!

Still not much action this offseason.

Josh Reddick has shoulder surgery. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

The Astros signed catcher Dustin Garneau to a one year deal. He played for the Agels last season but I beleive was traded to the As. Rumors are that he will compete with Garrett Stubbs for the back-up catcher position and that the team is still trying to woo Robinson Chirinos back for another season. Let's hope these rumors are true.

On the sign stealing investigation front, the team announced it has opened it's own investigation into the allegations. Stay tuned and take my advice, stay away from the comments on the allegations. It will only make you angry.

Go Astros! 2020 is our year!

Another quick update on the sign stealing scandal. Well there isn't much else to report. Seems like everyday the league is looking into some other means that the team could have possibly cheated.

By now I just have no doubt that something was going on and I have to express my true dissappointment over it. It seems like they can't find any real evidence though.

For offseason signing, there have been no transactions yet. I guess the team is laying low or possibly no player wants to sign with them with all the bad publicity surrounding them.

Latest rumors are they should really try to get Robinson Chirinos back for 2020. You know me, I want Chirinos back! It makes me remember last offseason and how I whined and moaned over the loss of Marwin Gonzalez. Well, we desperately need a catcher and he is the best one available. Hop to it!

Hope to have some really good news to report here soon,

Go Astros! emoticon

Need to update this thread!

First: Justin Verlander was named the 2019 Cy Young Award winner!! emoticon So glad he won.

Second: Alex Bregman finished second in MVP voting the second year in a row. emoticon

The big investigation into the sign stealing scandal is heating up with everyone and their brother weighing in and making accusations and assumpions.

So, I still don't know how Mike Fiers, who was with the As at the time, was able to uncover this cheating plot. The latest reports say it was Alex Cora's brainchild idea. Cora was caught in a stealing signs scandal in 2018 when he was (and still is) the manager of the Red Sox.

What really bothers me is that players had to have known for the idea to work. At least some players.

The MLB is doing what they call a "thorough investigation" into the whole matter. We will have to wait and see what the outcome is and how it will affect the Houston Astros moving forward. Some say they will lose draft picks. Some way they will be fined a big sum of money. Some say they will not get any punishment.

There was another video posted as supposed evidence of the cheating. A trash can in the hallway to the dugout with a table next to it. The claim is someone sat at that table watching a monitor of a camera in center field that was trained on the catcher and banged the trash can to alert the batters of pitches.

Well, the video that had the audio of a can being banged on sounded like a metal trash can to me and the can in the hallway was clearly plastic so that doesn't make sense. Also, they are now throwing out other possible ways the team could have stolen the signs.

So, in conclusion it looks like Mike Fiers made this accusation and everyone is doing all they can to prove it true but there is no real evidence so far (at least that I have heard of)

Hope this all gets over with soon!

In much better news the Astros signed Yuli Gurriel to a 1 year 8.3 million contract for 2020. Yea Yuli!

I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yersterday.

Okay the Cy Young Award winner will be announced today. But first we must address the elephant in the room.

At least the MLB Morning Lineup email I receive every morning did not cover this story but all the morning news shows are all over the story that the Astros have been accused of cheating during the 2017 season even the World Series that they won.

How disheartening is this!! emoticon

So Mike Fiers (former Astros) was the first one I heard about saying they stole signs during the 2017 World Series. Then I thought, didn't we trade him during the 2017 season? He wasn't even on the team so what does he really know other than gossip.

A couple of opposing pitchers claim that someone was banging a trash can to alert the batter that a changeup was being pitched so they would hold up and not swing at it. There was some grainy video and audio played that did seem to have a bang bang on a trash can happening during at bats. It was specifically Evan Gattis batting during the video I watched.

The team made a statement that they are looking into the allegations along with the MLB and I guess we will stay tuned to see what the outcome is.

As if it was not hard enough to get to the WS and lose this past season but to have the one WS they did win get tarnished! Will there be an asterisk next to it forever in the record books like Barry Bonds and his homerun record?

The Astros were also accused of cheating during the 2018 playoffs by the Boston Red Sox and the Red Sox were accused of cheating by the Astros. The MLB had an investigation and the Astros were cleared of any wrong doing but the Red Sox were fined for using an Apple watch to steal signs from the Astros. I guess I am the only person on the face of the planet who saw David Price illegally using some sort of gripping substance on the edge of his glove during Game 5.

I m truly hoping that the MLB will again find that the Astros did no wrong doing. All teams steal signs and there is nothing that can be done about it. It is a level playing field. However, the league rules are that you cannot use any type of electronic device to steal signs and that is what they accuse the Astros of doing in 2017. They say the team was watching the monitor in the dugout that was linked to a centerfield camera and figuring out what signs the catcher was giving and banging the trash can to alert of the pitches.

More on this later and hopefully we will get some terrific news about the Cy Young today and MVP tommorrow.

Go Astros!

Houston we have 3 Silver Slugger Awards! emoticon

Last night the Silver Slugger awards were announced and Alex Bregman, George Springer and Zack Greinke all won the award. emoticon

Of course, Greinke won the award as an Arizona Diamondback on the NL side. His stats during his time in Arizona this season are .271 batting average, .300 on base percentage and .583 slugging percentage. He had 13 hits, 3 HRs, 8 RBI, 7 runs scored, walked 11 times and .883 OPS (on base + slugging). Not shabby at all considering as a pitcher you only play once every 5 games or so, meaning there aren't as many chances to raise those averages or get those hits as a player who plays every game and bats 5-6 times a day.

This is the 3rd award Geinke has received this season. He also won a Gold Glove for the NL pitching position and the Defensive Player of the Year Award for the league pitching postion.

The Astros sure got a good one when they got Greinke. Too bad he will not be able to make as many plate appearances while on an AL team. Hopefully, he will continue to get in his batting practices and keep up his form so that when we have interleague play during the season, he will be our go to guy.

Go Astros! Hope to hear more good news soon.

Some big news out of the Astros camp this morning. Reid Ryan has been removed as President of the team and Jim Craine's son Jared has been named new team president. This front office move prompted Nolan Ryan (Reid's father of course) to resign his position with the team. As a parent, I completely undertand Nolan Ryan's decision.

Now the question I have is if Nolan Ryan has "cut ties" with the Astros, will the Roundrock Express remain the AAA Affiliate of the Astros? I suppose there is some sort of a contract in place.

Nolan Ryan along with Don Sander and other investors, owns the Roundrock Express AAA baseball team.

The Express were the AAA affiliate of the Texas Rangers until the 2019 season when the Astros became the affiliate and those players who were previously on the AAA Fresno Grizzlies moved to Roundrock, Texas which is much closer to Houston than California, making it a much easier trip for players to be called up to the majors. We needed that close proximity this past season when so many players landed on the IL and needed to be replaced in the lineup by players from Roundrock.

While his father is stepping down as advisor to the team, Reid Ryan will remain an employee of the Astros as an advisor. Perhaps he will take the position his father has vacvated. All of this is reported to be stemming from the whole Brandon Taubman debacle, and how it was handled in the press (according to all the various storeis out there).

Ok I don't want to bury the good news behind this so I am making another post this morning.

Still waiting to hear results of the big awards. The defensive player of the year awads were announced today. As usual no specific Astro players earned an award for their position except Zack Greinke who won for the pitching position. emoticon

Unlike other MLB awards, there is only one award for each position and one for a team. It is not an AL or NL but league award.

Oh, who won the Defensive Team of the Year Award? They call it the Wilson Award.

The Houston Astros! Yeah!!! Our team actually won an award. You know I believe they deserve all the awards. So good to see them get some recognition for an outstanding season. emoticon Next year will be even better.

Go Astros!

Well the news is that the Astros extended a qualifying offer only to Gerrit Cole, who is most likely to pass on the 17.8 million one year contract. Reminds me of last season when the only free agent offered the QO was Dallas Keuchel and he declined.

I don't really understand the news on Chris Devinski. The roster says his status has been changed but he is not listed with the rest of the players who elected free agency. The news said the Astros declined the 202 option on Devinski and he will remain as an arbitration-eligible player. So I guess that means if he and the team can agree on a salary he will play for the Astros in 2020.?

Someone who has already landed a job this offseason is former Astros Carlos Beltran. Beltran has been named the new manager of the New York Mets. I wish him luck in turning that team into a winner and a contender. emoticon

The list of finalists for awards came out and 4 of our players are on there as excpected. Bregman for MVP, Cole and Verlander for Cy Young and Alvarez for ROY. We will wait and see if any of them win. Of course, they all deserve to win.

Go Astros! Can't wait for Spring.

So, of all the Astros who were finalists for a Gold Glove this season only one player won. Zack Greinke won the Gold Glove for the Pitcher position but it was for the NL and his performance as an Arizona Diamondback.

Can't believe Bregman was beaten out by Matt Chapman for a second straight year. Wish these awards went to the players who truly had the best performances instead of being voted on, making it a popularity contest.

Almost every position had an Astros as the runner up. Yuli Gurriel, Jose Altuve, Josh Reddick and Alex Bregman all runners up to the winners. Stings after being runner up to the Nationals in the WS. emoticon

Let's see if we can pull out any Silver Sluggers, the Rookie of the Year or the Cy Young award. Fingers crossed.

It is officially day one of the offseason.

As I listed in the 2019 season topic, 9 of our 2019 Astros are going into free agency (unless the team makes them an offer and they take it.

Here is the list of the 9 again (7 pitchers and 2 catchers)

Gerritt Cole.
It will be heartbreaking to see Cole go. My heart still hurts seeing him in the bullpen last night and not getting the chance to relieve Greinke and get us that win. Really hope the Astros open their wallet and try to keep Cole for at least another year.

Robinson Chirinos
I absolutely loved having Chirinos on our team. Word is that Justin Verlander wants him to stay (per AJ Hinch). Hopefully the team will make me and Justin happy and sign Robinson on for another couple of years.

Wade Miley
Miley did really well most of the season but kind of fell apart there at the end. He did not make the postseason roster and I doubt we will remain with the team. It was great to have him though. He has a great personality and games went by so fast when he pitched.

Will Harris
I have had my ups and downs with Will Harris. Sometimes I love him and sometimes I groan when he comes out to pitch. He did a much better job for us this season than in previous seasons though so now that he has found his groove, it will be hard to see him go. He ended up being the best reliever in the bullpen.

Joe Smith
Smith has had some injuries this year but came back in time for the postseason and did a great job for us. He was only with us part of last year and this year and I don't think he will get another offer from the team. He deserves an offer but it is not likely.

Chris Devinski
Devo! Don't go Devo! Well Devinski has been with is for awhile so it will be really sad to see him go. He was not as good this year as he has been in the past. Like Harris, you never knew who was going to show up on the mound this season. It is likely he will go to another team and I will miss his trademark lumbering walk.

Hector Rondon
Rondon was signed in the offseason after 2017 and pitched for us 2 seasons. He was not as up and down as some of the other relievers but I think the team is going to revamp that bullpen as much as they can. It was nice having Rondon on the team because he was pretty consistent and dependable. I hope we can get someone of his caliber to replace him.

Martin Maldonado
We just got Martin back and now what? So after we traded for Martin last season he went into free agency. The Astros offered him a hefty 2 year contract and he delclined. Somehow he found his way back to our team but I think they will try to keep Chirinos over Maldonado and bring up Garrett Stubs as the back up catcher.

Collin McHugh
McHugh has been with the Astros since 2015. Houston is the only team he has played for in his career. He has had several injuries and stints on the DL / IL and didn't play the entire 2016 season and a good portion of the 2017 season either. He was injured again this season and was not on the active roster for the last half of the year. It is unlikely the team will try to retain him but what a great guy and a lot of fun to watch.

Well, those are my thoughts on this years free agents. I'll keep this updated on any news on who stays, who goes and who the team signs from other teams. There are a lot of really good players entering free agency this season. Hope we can lure some great talent to help us out in 2020.

Haven't had much to "update" lately. We did sign a LHP Wade Miley, formerly of the Milwaukee Brewers to a one year contract. To me that looks a lot like the team is no longer trying to negotiate a contract with Dallas Kuechel.

Still hoping to see them get Marwin back. emoticon

Oh! some more crazy Astros stuff.

Karbach brewing is making an Astros brew Crawford Bock. I don't think I'll be downing any of these (that's how beer bellies are born) but if I come across one of the rainbow cans I will most likely buy it as a souvenir.

Also, on the news I saw that the team is going to build it's own Hall of Fame and the first class of inductees will be Nolan Ryan, Jose Cruz, Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. It will be at the Left Field side of the park where there are those bronze statues of the above named players already.

Couple of player sighting!

Evan Gattis played catcher in the alumni game for his alma mater University of Texas Permian Basin. I caught the interview with Evan. It was great to see him. Boy of boy! his beard is getting long. lol

Also, George Springer is Grand Marshal of the MLK parade downtown this morning. I'm going to try and xatch a glimpse of him. Not in person, just on the news coverage.

I bet Springer will not be missing the CT weather getting to come down to H-Town for a day or 2.

The Astros Caravan will be on the road again this year and it begins next week. Here is the link of the schedule of when where and most importantly who! will be making appearances. Most are at Academy stores and a few Chik-fil-A. They are traveling to Houston, Austin, Corpus and San Antonio.

I love seeing the pics from last year again. Especially Yuli working the drive through window at Chick-fil-A.

I drive by MMP a couple of times a day and I am missing my baseball games! Last night there was a re-air of opening day from last season. I watched a couple of minutes to reminisce.

I think I have changed my mind on my player challende this season. I am leaning towards rooting on and trying to keep up with our littlest yet biggest star Jose Altuve. I really want to see Jose bounce back from his knee injury last year and have th best year of his career.

So, a couple of days ago the team traded J.D. Davis to the NY Mets for 5 young minor league players. Sorry to see J.D. go but hopeful that the trade will help our team.

Since Davis is a 3rd baseman, it was unlikely he would get much playing time since we have superstar 3rd baseman Alex Bregman. A 5 for 1 trade shows the value Davis has. I wish him the best and hope he gets to be on the big league roster for the Mets.

In other, non baseball related news, George Springer will be the grand marshall of the MLK parade in Houston along with Congressman John Lewis. Congrats on that great honor GS!

Nothing baseball related to update. Things have quieted down over the holidays.

I did just watch Alex Bregman's latest You Tube video where he and "the boys" drove around Houston and gave $100 bills for tips to fast food drive through workers. How generous! I'm not entirely convinced any of the recipients of the $100 even knew who it was giving it to them.

Hope to have more news later. I guess no news is good news. emoticon

The headline today was that Joe Smith had to have surgery for a ruptured achilles tendon. Ouch! I've had achilles problems for about a year now and it hurts off and on. The bump/swelling never completely goes away. So Smith is supposed to be out 6-8 weeks. I don't think that will interfere with him being able to pitch in 2019.

I wonder how he injured it. Mine was from someone ramming a shopping cart into me in the grocery store.

Hope Smith's achilles heals up better and faster than mine has.

Michael Brantly is now officially on the Active Roster but I cannot figure out who he replaced. The "Victory Royale" bunch is still there: Springer, Marisnick and Reddick. Kemp and Fisher are still there as well as newbies Straw and Tucker. Marwin has been gone off that list since October. Must have been another section of the roster where they moved someone to make room. Even Joe Smith is still listed. I guess they haven't had time to update or they are not going to place him on the DL since he will recover in time for Spring Training.

Word is the team is still trying the get catcher Realmuto from the Marlins.

So the news today is that the Astros have acquired a new player, Michael Brantly who has spent his entire career to this point on the Cleveland Indians. Brantly is an outfielder, playing both left field and center and is a left handed batter, which is what the team had been looking for. Sadly, to me this means Marwin is going to be off the table for a return to the team. emoticon

Looking on the bright side, Brantly is a really good player who made the All-Star team just this past season. Stats from last year are: batting averate .309, 176 hits with 17 home runs and 12 doubles, 89 runs scored in 570 at bats. His fielding stats: 221 put outs with 228 chances. That is a phenomenal 97% of outs. He also had 6 assists and only one error in the entire 2018 season. I can see why the other players on the team are reacting positively to the addition of Brantly to the roster.

Other news says the team is also said to be trying to acquire Nelson Cruz from the Mariners to be the new DH with the departure of both Evan Gattis and Brian McCann, who both served in that position last year. The Tampa Bay Rays are also rumored to be trying to sign Cruz and are closer to making the deal so the Astros may have to look elsewhere for a new DH.

Rumors also say they may get J.T. Realmuto from the Miami Marlins. The Realmuto deal is said to involve trading Kyle Tucker. We will have to wait and see if that deal goes through. I really don't see the team trading an outfielder for a catcher. We already have 3 catchers on the team. I guess they would send Garrett Stubbs back to Round Rock?

I personally don't like all the "musical chairs" in the offseason but I am excited that our team will be better than ever this next season and that we will have a good chance of getting past the Boston Red Sox to make it to the World Series in 2019. We just need to stay healthy and give our starting pitchers some early run support.

More to come later. Spring is around the corner.

I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yersterday.

With the close of the winter meetings and no big deals made in the Astros favor we are now waiting to see if the team can fill any of the positions available.

I'm sure you've heard they lost 3 to the Rule 5 Draft. uuuhhhggg

This "draft" is kind of complicated, meaning there are a lot of variables to be met for a player to be eligible to be drafted under this rule and it follows him for a couple of seasons.

My understanding is:

* player has to have been drafted by his current team at at 18 or younger and playing for at least 5 years or has to have been drafted by his current team at 19 or younger and playing for at least 4 years.
* players are playing at the minor league level and have not been brought up to the majors yet.
* teams who do not have a complete 40-man roster can draft eleigible players and if they do they have to pay the team they drafted from $100,000
* the player has to then be put on the new team's 25-man active roster and remain there for the entire next season with no more than 90 days spent on the disabled list
* if the player does not remain on the active 25-man roster he has to be placed on waivers the next season
* If the player clears waviers (that's a whole other confusing topic) he must be offred back to his original team (he was rule 5 drafted from) for $50,000
* if the original team does not want the player back he can be sent down to the minors.

Told ya it was complicated. Basically, this rule allows players who seem to be stuck at the minor league level a chance to get on the active roster of another team to be able to play at the major league level. This kind of forces teams to give these minor leaguers a chance by bringing them up to the major league level during the season and seeing if it works ot for them.

Oh! One article I read mentioned that there is a chance the team will re-sign Marwin Gonzalez! They are in need of a left handed batter who can play the outfield.

Hey! I know Marwin can throw out base runners going home from the outfield without a cutoff man. His throws have been clocked at 90+ MPH. The last at bat he had for our team he hit a homerun against the Red Sox. The only score we had in that final game of last season. I'm rooting for a MarWIN return.

I'll end on that happy note!

So we lost another player from our championship team. Charlie Morton signed a 2 year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays for $30 mil! Yikes. I don't think our team could have beat that offer. Morton began his career n Atlanta but spent the majority with PIttsburgh before signing a 2 year deal with the Astros in 2017.

No more "Uncle Charlie" or "Ground Chuck" emoticon

Congrats on making a spectacular deal Charlie Morton. To think, the Rays were hard to beat already. We only won 2 of 6 games against them last season. Things will not be easier for the Astros in Tampa Bay next season.

Can't wait to see what news comes out of Vegas next. Hopefully some really good news.

Todays update is that owner Jim Craine has announced that he will increase the total payroll for the team in 2019 to as much as 206 million. Last year it was arond 170. It sounds like they are willing to pay to get some good players. Adter that in 2020 is when Jose Altuve's big contract takes effect and his salary alone will be 29 so adjustments will again be made.

Also in the news today is a video of top pitching prospect Forrest Whitley throwing the ball at 110 MPH! Wow! that is ridiculous.

They keep mentioning needing starting pitching an I keep commenting to myself that we still have our late editions from last season who did a great job: Fromber Valdez and Josh James.

The stories still talk about Kuechel, Morton and Gonzalez. You know I want to see Marwin back again. Hey! everyone in our family has all kinds of Marwin Gonzalez jerseys and T-shirts that still have a lot of life left in them. emoticon

Winter Meetings begin today. Word is Astros management is not leaking any info on their strategy. They have previously announced that their main goals will be signing a pitcher to replace Dallas Kuechel and hopefully re-signing Charlie Morton.

I believe we have enough catcher now with the signing of Chirinos (Max Stassi and Garrett Stubbs) Stassi made the team last spring and was previously on the Grizzlies AAA and Stubbs was brought up from Roundrock during this offseason.

Fingers still crossed they re-sign Marwin Gonzalez. That's been my main goal this offseason emoticon So far he has not landed anywhere else.

I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yersterday.

I have good news to add to this thread!

The team has landed catcher Robinson Chirinos in a one year deal. Everyone should be very familiar with this player because as a Texas Ranger we faced him a lot!

Welcome to H-Town! emoticon

Here are the stats on our newest addition from last season:

.222 Batting Average with 80 hits, 48 runs scored, 18 home runs and 65 RBIs in 112 games played.

Those numbers are on par with many of our current players but I would expect them to improve significantly becasue I know our team has the coaching staff that can help tweak player performances and turn them into superstar sensations. Just look at Charlie Morton, Gerrit Cole and Martin Maldonado's performances since joining the team.

Now, let's see what else Mr. Lunhow and Mr. HInch have in their playbook.

So, I get the MLB emails petty much daily with all the latest news on teams and players and all the trading that goes on in the offseason. There was a lot of chatter about the Astros being close to sigining some pretty big names and then today it seems like all these power players are signed by other teams!

I don't know if I should be discouraged that our team can't land a big name player or encouraged that they may end up re-signing my favorite Astro, Marwin Gonzalez.

The team did extend contracts to all the players on the 40 man roster with the excemption of cather/outfielder Chris Herrmann, who the had pcked up off waviers from the Seattle Mariners shortly after the season ended. Hoping this means the team still has an eye towards catcher Evan Gattis and outfielder "exrodinaire" Marwin Gonzalez! emoticon

One name that was on the 40 man roster and I was certain had chosen free agency was pitcher Will Harris. I need to double check my posts on that.

So far the only former Astro that I have seen ink a deal for 2019 has been Brian McCann. No word on Dallas Kuechel, Marwin Gonzalez, Evan Gattis . . The winter meetings begin in Las Vegas I think this weekend or maybe next week. That is when some deals should be made.

Still keeping my fingers crossed. Also, still thinking about which player to pick for my challenge next season. I'm leaning towards a repeat of the "Bregman Miles" challenge. A-Breg has so much fun playing that it is fun to cheer him on. He certainly did not let me down last year.

Go Astros! #NeverSettle

EDIT: Okay, so I looked back on this very thread and saw that the team had announced on November 2nd that they would not be bringing Will Harris back for the 2019 season. I knew it. What does this mean? Means all it not lost.

So the news today is catcher Brian McCann re-signed with his former team the Atlanta Braves for a one year contract. I'm happy Brian got the deal he wanted. I know he grew up in Atlanta and the Braves have been his team from the beginning. He played his rookie year with the braves and was with them up until 2014. Getting to go back home .. . .that is what you call coming full circle.

Glad the Astros are in the AL. I looked at the 2019 schedule and we do not play the Braves at all. There are a couple of teams on the list that we rarely face including the Cincinatti Reds and the the team will face Detroit a couple of times. Then there are the usual suspects that give us a hard time: Mariners, A's, Angels and Rangers aka the AL West division teams.

Spring training is onle a few months away!

Well the acquisition of Alydemas Diaz from the Blue Jays it looks like the Astros will not ber able to retain Marwin Gonzalez emoticon That's what reports say. Diaz is a shortstop so I was hoping he was on the team to help out Crrea while he is still battling back issues.

Who knows. We have to wait and see what happens in the Spring. Who is in the clubhouse and who is not.

The team did supposedly make an offer to Charlie Morton to remain with the club for a couple of more years. No word on whether Uncle Chuck will accept.

Good news! Several former Astros are on the Hall f Fame ballot and honorees will be announced January 22nd.

New on the ballot are Lance Berkman, Roy Oswalt, Andy Pettite and Miguel Tejada. I don't think Pettite or Tejada retired as Astros. I know Pettite went back to New York after his couple of years with us and I'm not sure where Tejada landed. He seemed to bounce around a lot.

For certain Oswalt and Berkman are both Astros. Although they each played on other teams at the end of their careers, they both resigned with Houston to retire as Astros. I would love to see them both get elected. Roy O was one of the best pitchers in Astros' history and well . . we already have Biggio and Bagwell in there so all we need is the Big Puma in the HOF line up to round out the "KIller B's!" Boy, those were great memories.

Roger Clemens, Jeff Kent and Curt Shilling are also former Astros on the ballot. They habe beeon on the ballot previously Maybe this will be the year. I beleive Kent retired as a Dodfer, Clemens as a Yankee and Shilling most likely would go in with the Boston Red Sox, where he played the longest and had the most success. Either there or Philadelphia Phillies. I don't know where to find what team they would represent in the HOF is elected.

News on current players. Jose Altuve made a commercial for DirecTV and people thought he was quitting twitter. The commercial has everyone freaking out that he is quitting baseball. With $151 mil on the table. . . I think not.

Altuve was also honored as the Grand Marshall of Houston's Thanksgiving Day parade yesterday along with Rocket's star James Harden.

There is a lot more news on coaching staff and pitching staff. I'll get into that next.

Trying to keep this team active through the offseason. So here is what's up:

JV came in 2nd in the Cy Young voting. emoticon Seems strange becasue his stats were 1st in the league in every pitching category except wins and . . . .well that can't exactly be attriputed to his pitching.

Oh, well.

So Alex Bregman continues to be in the news every day. Yesterday he and Max Stassi passed out free Thanksgiving turkeys with Jim Mac to families in need. Jim Mac has been sponsoring Thanksgiving dinner for as long as I can remember. I'm sure thre recipients were pleasantly surprised to see who was handing them the birds.

Then today Alex has fullfilled the wish of a fan to be in her senior pictures. This guy has a heart as big as Texas!

That's all for now.

No surprise Dallas Kuechel declined the 17.9 mil. QO for 2019. So now Dallas will look for offers from other teams and whoever ends up signing him will owe the Astros a draft pick (something like that). I'm still not a fan of the whole FA rule.

Still holding out hope that the team will re-sign Evan Gattis and especially Marwin Gonzalez. There have been rumors that the Colorado Rockies may want him. That may just be sports anaylists deciding which team would best benefit from Marwin's talents. My opinion will always be the Houston Astros will best benefit from Marwin's talents!

The ROY awards were announced. We didn't have anyone in the running. I was surprised Shoei Ohtani was the AL winner being that he spent a good deal of time on the DL and didn't pitch anymore after being re-activated because he needed Tommy John's, which he had as soon as the season ended. This is a weird scenario becasue Lance McCullers also had to have Tommy John's and his injury was not caused by pitching but by swinging the bat in that game against the LA Dodgers.

Here's a surprise. Carlos Correa also had surgery for a deviated septum. Best wishes to CC for a speedy recovery.

Also, I'm rooting for Alex Cora to be named Manager of the Year. He did what most cannot: won back to back World Series and won a World Series his first year as manager of a new team.

So Alex Bregman is back in the news today. He left a $500 tip to a waitress whose car had been broken into. Alex has a You Tube channel where he is posting the "behind the scenes" look at his life during the offseason. I finally found it!

Here is the link. You know I'm a Bregman fan and am all over this!

Nothing baseball related but I want to say Congrats! Justin Verlander announced over the weekend that his wife had a baby girl. Awww so sweet. Still fingers crossed he also welcomes a new baby Cy Young award.

Also, crazy as it sounds: a "super fan" posted online she wished Alex Bregman was there celebrating her wedding and well. . . careful what you wish for . . .Alex Bregman showed up! How awesome was that. Alex has a You Tube channel and posted the video of the wedding.

Hope to be sharing some good news as all the baseball awards are being handed down this week.

Next week we find out if Justin Verlander will win the Cy Young. Fingers crossed!

Want to wish Lance McCullers Jr. a speedy recovery. He has had the Tommy John's surgery we all knew was inevitable. This means he will not be on the team for the 2019 season. McCullers is under contract with the Astros through 2021 so hope to see him back on the mound for 2020.

Another bit of post seasn action. The Astros did acquire Chris Hermann off waviers from the Seattle Mariners. Hermann is a multiple position player: he is a cather, an outfielder and first baseman. Does this mean he is taking Marwin's place? I'm still hoping the team makes a deal for Gonzalez but as of the moment he is no longer listed on the roster. As for Hermann he will have to go through salary arbitration and I believe has to agree to a price before joining the team.

Well it was a great weekend for Dallas Kuechel. First, he was the only free agent the Astros offered a 2019 contract for 17.9 million to. Kuechel has until the 12th I believe to take the offer. In the mean time other teams are going to try to get him from us.

Then last night we heard Dallas won his 4th Gold Glove for the pitching position. The Gold Glove is awarded to one player from each position (in each league) who does a superb job at fielding the ball and getting basrunners out. Maldonado was also in the running but he lost out to Yadier Molina. And Alex Bregman was runner up to Matt Chapman of the Oakland A's who won for the 3rd base position. I'm probably biased but I watch a lot of Astros baseball (every game) and Alex Bregman is one of the best fielders out there and will be a decorated player by the end of his career.

Alex is also the Astros candidate for both league MVP and a Silver Slugger Award. Wll keep you updated on who wins what.

I have to also mention I'm not shocked that Marwin Gonzalez didn't get the QO for 17.9 mil. After all he made 5.1 on 2018 so that would be a huge leap. In any event I am still hoping the Astros end up getting him back on the team. Otherwise, we will have to face him in opposition and the other team will be the one MarWINNING!

So today is the day we will learn the fate of our free agents.

Already this morning the team has announced it will not bring pitcher Will Harris back.

I'm holding my breath. . . I'm like the rest of the fans and do not want to see Marwin Gonzalez go!

Will keep ya posted!

Well time to say goodbye to catcher Brian McCann. The team did not pick up his option for 2019 so he is now a free agent.

We were blessed to have this talented guy behind the plate and can attribute his experience to helping us win that World Series title last year. I remember seeing McCann in a World Series his rookie year when he was with the Altanta Braves. I beleive at the time he was the youngest player ever to appear in a World Series.

No more McCannonballlsss!!! emoticon

Best wishes McCann. I hope you land on a great team.

Two bits of news this morning:

Alex Bregman will be in the booth as an anaylist at game 3 of the World Series tonight. I just might watch for that! I've always watched the World Series for as long as I can remember, no matter who was in it. This year, I have not watched a single pitch. Just don't feel like it with the Astros not there.

Also, did y'all see that Bregman, Maldonado and Kuechel are all finalists for a Gold Glove? My money is on Bregman definitely winning one. Maldonado. . . possible. Kuechel. . . I just don't know one way or the other. He may have had a great year but I didn't notice because Verlander and Cole outshined the entire pitching staff.

Wonder when they will be announcing finalists for the Cy Young. I'm pulling for verlander to take that coveted award.

Oh, did y'all see the Texans game last night? A.J. Hinch was on the sidelines! The Texans won their 5th straight game. Woo Hoo for them. Wonder if that is some kind of record. They only play 16 games in the season. It goes by so fast.

Later.

I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yersterday.

Well I had a lot of stuff written, hit some button I don't even know what button and it all went away!

Still wating and holding my breath to see what happens to our team.

A lot of teams are already researching Marwin Gonzalez and preparing their offers to get him off free agency. Really hope the Astros will make him a better offer because he is the best at what he does and we need him.

Lunhow and Hinch are preparing for the Winter meetings where they say the focus will be on pitching and catching. Evidently Maldonado is also a free agent. Seems they already declined McCAnn's 15M option for 2019. That leaves us with Max Stassi. REally hope they keep one of the three: McCann, Maldonado or Gattis.

Maldonado worked really hard to jump in for Brian McCann and he can hit the ball as well as he can catch it. Not that fast a runner but hey, that's where you put Myles Straw or Jake Marisnock in when needed in a pinch.

Okay, will update later.

I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yersterday.

Okay, so this is the new forum for off season. I have to keep up with the posts or this team goes back to inactive status.

So the first bit of news came during the post season ALCS series. On October 16th the Astros acquired 2 new players from the MIami Marlins: Right Fielder Adonis Giron and Left Handed Pitcher Brayan De Paula. Both of these guys are minor leaguers at this point. All minor and major league players get to attend Spring Training Camp so we will have to wait and see if either of these guys make it onto the 2019 roster for the Astros or if they will be playing for the Corpus Christi Hooks, Roundrock Express or another lower level minor league affiliate.

So the biggest news is that Jose Altuve had surgery on his right knee. The mlb article states the surgery repaired a patella avulsion fracture. Oh my! I didn't realize we were dealing with an actual fracture of the knee cap. I assumed he had patellar tendonitis or ACL or MCL ligament tear or maybe torn miniscus.

I'm sending best wishes for a speedy recovery to our speedy Altuve. He'll be back and better than ever next season. emoticon emoticon emoticon

There is also a rumor that Lance McCullers could need Tommy John surgery to repair the tear in his ulnar lateral ligament. That surgery takes a long time to recover from and it would put McCullers on the disabled list for the entire season of 2019. What a bummer that is.

We currently have a pitcher Jandel Gustave, who had the surgery in 2017 and was out for the 2018 season. Also, Roberto Osuna had the surgery in 2013. He pitches really good, so I guess this surgery gets the job done.

It's not just pitchers that get that injury requiring Tommy John's. Oiutfielders, shortstops, etc. are all listed. But it's mostly pitchers.

Shohei Ohtani had the surgery October 1st so I guess we will not see him with the Angels in 2019.

If you look up who had Tommy John's there is a really long list. Of course, Tommy John himself tops the list since he was the first one to get it.

We will wait and see who will be returning to the team. I'll keep you posted on anything I hear.

I'm not there yet, but I'm closer than I was yersterday.
