Hello fellow Mexican Foodie :)
It's my second favourite but I have to say I prefer to make my own so I know that it's clean and not loaded with fat and salt.

I hate to say it, but a Taco Salad with the shell is probably more calories than your entire day of calories! The shell is FAT...and a bit of carb! LOL It's basically ALL FAT! And the dressing...same thing.

The other answer was probably the best...LOTS AND LOTS of veggies...limit the chips and tortillas to 1 handful and 1 tortilla. DRINK HEAPS OF WATER and GRILLED CHICKEN OR FISH. The extra spices they use will up your metabolism, but use water instead of alcohol to quench. I would recommend this to my clients as well....during the day...before you eat out...eat lots of veggies, drink heaps of water and eat your fruit and dairy and protein. No carbs or fats because you will get more than enough even if you don't try when you eat out :)

Fajitas aren't too bad as long as you are limiting your use of the tortillas. And if you must have a drink, stick with light beer or something. I learned my lesson last night with the margaritas!! I knew it was a bad idea, but they taste so good! Chili's (fake Mexican lol) has a skinny margarita that tastes great and is like 110 or so calories. I think it's made with Patron, sweet and sour, and agave nectar or something.

Or do your taco salad sans shell and use salsa as dressing. Load up the veggies and protein (sometimes I'll do half chicken half steak). Hold the sour cream. But if you have the calories get the guac! It's high fat, but has a lot of beneficial nutrients.

I absolutely LOVE Mexican food. But it can be completely high in calories.

I know I can plan ahead & save some extra calories for my favorite meal, but when it's a spur of the moment thing what are some safe go to's to have?

My favorite thing ever is a taco salad (with shell) - which would be my "I've planned to eat here" meal.

I don't have to have beans or rice.
Don't have to have tortillas.
I love chicken at Mexican places.
Not a big fan of soup.
