I work 1840 to 0710, or whenever report is done in morning. Usually 3 to 4 nights a week. I always eat a dinner before I go to work (lots of protein, some vegys). I pack a bunch of little foods like cheese, burger patty, pickles & olives, salad stuff, salami slices and one diet drink. That usually keeps me well fed - the salty stuff satisfies enough that I don't even want chips. I think the trick is protein - keeps you full and you don't get carb cravings. I rarely take a fruit- that's too carby and makes me crave other carbs. Just berries sometimes.
- this works for me and I've lost 30 pounds since I've stuck to this type eating.

Good Luck- it's really just make sure you bring stuff you like (for me it's the olives, pickles, salami or peperoni, and cheese) for snacks.

Okay, tomorrow-Wednesday, is my first time working night shift in almost 5 years, after doing a wide variety of other things including research, travel, agency staffing, home health, and insurance assessment. I am looking forward to it with some nervous anticipation.

Today was a long day, as I only had 5 hours of sleep because I needed to be in the city early for doctor's appointments for myself. The good thing is that I also took the time to go to a Bible study and get some more paperwork turned in the HR and the nurse educator for my nursing unit. She is planning on meeting with me this week to discuss how orientation has gone for me so far.

I hope that I find the night shift group and great of a team as the day shifters are. Right now, I am not so sure of that, but I have to realize that the few times I have seen them they were not yet awake or they were tired from the night's work.

I hope all have a great week at work & great progress on building your healthy lifestyle.

Blessings,
Amanda, RN

I can say that I have recently had these thoughts after starting to work on my new unit. I have one more week of days before going to nights, but it seems like the work is less hectic than it was on day shift on my old unit, which is why I would have never gone to days on that unit.

I am glad though that I will be starting on night shift here in a week, as then I will not be one of 3 Amanda's on the same shift. I did something similar on my previous unit. I am glad that I am unique, so I will stick to night shift for right now at least. I need to make up the money from not working the last 3 months. The bills are starting to pile up.

Amanda, RN

"Morning" Everybody! I'm getting ready for my 4-in-a-row; I slept all night last night and most of the day today. So I'm ready to go. I was off for a bunch of days, and it made me think about going back to dayshift! I'd be nice to be awake every day- actually have a day off doing stuff instead of sleeping.
Anybody else ever think like that? - Now, once I'm back into my nightshift, I'll probebley change my mind....
Anyone else have any thought about this???

I had a great 1st week of orientation, classroom. Next week will be a mixed bag with Monday & Tuesday being classroom based stuff and Friday & Saturday, I will work with a preceptor on the floor. I will be working days for the first 3 weeks and will switch to nights starting the last week of August for 3 weeks of orientation on that shift before being "on my own," not that a person in such a large accademic medical center is ever on their own. That is kind of what I like about it.

Thanks. I am looking forward to it. Right now, waiting for HR to send me some information so I can fill out my I-9 form. I start orientation on Monday for a little over a week of 8-5's for classroom based orientation.

I will be working neurology instead of general medicine, so I am sure I have a few quirky things to learn along with whatever has changed over the last 5 years while I was away from that healthcare system. I am so looking forward to a stabile income again & a routine, if you can say that, so that I can get my eating & other health activities back on track.

Wow Arma, that's great news! Shouldn't take to long to get back into the swing of things again. Glad you're back into the hospital night shift again, you'll love it and congrats to have gotten the job.

I got the job on the Neurology unit that a former coworker of mine is the manager of. That means not only that I wll be going back to working at the hosptial, but also working night shift. I am so excited. A little scared as I have been out of the hospital for 5 years and I know that even in that short period of time the patients are so much sicker than when I last worked there.

I am also looking forward to being better able to help you build a healthier lifestyle as I will be going through swome of the same challenges that you face on a daily basis. I encourage you to provide me also with help & support, because just as one nurse cannot take care of all the patients in a facility, most if not all of us cannot do the job of taking care of ourselves without help from each other.

Have a great night. The wrong side of the sun, may just be my side of the sun.

Amanda, RN

Kinda excited for Friday. I am going to a job fair in the morning and then interviewing for a position on a neuro unit of another hospital. Best part is a former coworker is the manager of the neuro unit.

Kidney stone is out & stent is in until Monday. I am using this time to get some things done around the house and put in some more job applications. Need to return a call for a position on a neuro unit & send out a couple thank yous.

I am greatfully needing less pain medicine & appreciating the help from multiple friends over the past few days.

Just an update on my job search. I had a good interview for the women's health position on Monday. Today, I talk to someone regarding a case management position. Tomorrow, I interview for a hospital oncology position. I am hopeful that one of these will work out.

I can appreciate where you are coming. Just having an organization recognize their night shift is a big thing. Don't beat yourself up too much over this one. You were one of the honorees at the party. What is important is what you do a majority of the time, not necessarily the one night flings.

Hey all. I am back. Been gone about a year. In that time, I worked in a hospital for a couple of months. Had about a month off before doing home health for 8 months. Now looking for work again. I would so love to return to the medicine unit I worked on straight out of school. Doesn't look like that will happen, so I am in the running for an insurance nurse and a women's health position. Both are days, more the 8-5 thing, but I will survive.

I hope all are doing well.

I'm getting ready for work, making dinner and watching the news. Last night I have to admit to over-eating!!! Cake, candy, nachos, fruit, more cake! Dang- now I'll have to cut back for a few days. No excuses, but they had a nice Nurses Day Celebration in the hospital auditorium, so I indulged.
They actually had it for a while at night (till 2100)- hope everyone had a nice week and a good Nurses Day yesterday. The theme was Cinco de Mayo- so it was colorful and the decorations (and food) was great.
A late Happy Nurses Day to All.

Wow, the end of another month already! I've had a busy month, had to go out of town for family reasons and been away from Spark People since then. Now I'm back, getting ready for work and will try to get this team more active. But we need your help, so please please post something on our site and maybe we can get back to being active again.
If anyone has a 'sticky topic' idea, let me know and we'll start it up. You can email me or just post here, I'll try to check this later tonight, otherwise it'll be tomorrow after work......
Thanks. emoticon

Where I work many of us gained weight on nights and some have lost weight recently. Everybody did it with a different "diet plan" or "lap-band", but it goes to show - any plan works if you stick to the that one that works for you and don't mix and match plans too much.
I did low carb/ high fats (lost 32 pounds), One went to a 'diet doctor'- used meds and running and gave up tortillas(lost 40pounds)!,One had lap band (down 50 pounds since July!!) and two others just winged it and lost and gained back. Everyone claims to be 'working out' and about 7 people run - they're the thinnest of all!!
All of us still eat some late night candy and snacks- but we've cut down dramatically compared to what we use put out as group snacks!
How is your nightshift as a group doing with weight gain/loss??

I got flexed last night so I am going to take the day to spend with the kids and go to the park and exercise, the day is too beautiful not to take full advantage. One more shift today, then to decide if I want to pick up on registry? Probably not!!!!
