Thank you all for the great information! Especially the web site with the recipes.

I am reading Victoria Boutenko's book, 12 Steps to Raw Foods, and this web site

mentions her books, so all this information has been affirming what I have

read.

You all have been so kind and helpful. I am sincerely grateful for all of your

help.

Hope you have a very blessed Lord's Day tomorrow!

Ruthie

Yvonne, I know what you mean when doing my cleanses I'm very confident on what I know and using them.

Edit: I get from reading Dr. Schulze's mailers and experiences from others who have written in.

You do have to watch for the leafy greens, while some are high in calcium they also have other properties (oxalates) that doesn't make the calcium as bioavailalbe as others. The ones I remember off hand being the best were broccoli and bok choy, the ones that stood out that were not so good were spinach and collards - HOWEVER those greens are still good for you, just goes to show that you need to eat a varied diet.

I take 2 500 mi Calcium tablets a day one after lunch and one after dinner. they should be more than 3 hours apart. Calcium supplements are a antural relaxant. I should ahve between 1,200-1500 mi a day in calcium. but i get a grat amount in the foods I eat.

LOL @ Yvonne. You and the Gorrillas are getting your fill of Bananas.

I do not take a supplement. I haven't had my levels checked in a while, but in the past they were good, and the dentist says I have very strong teeth :)

Also, you have to think about the source of the calcium. In one of my classes during my undergrad, the professor told us that the calcium recommendations tend to run 3x as high as the actually calcium you need, because you only absorb about 1/3 of what you take in. My PERSONAL thought (looking for research on this) is that that recommendation is using dairy as the gold standard, since that's the only sources sited in my book in their research (plus the amount of political pressure from the dairy industry is disgusting.) So, again, my theory is that calcium from plants is going to be much more readily absorbed, thus you may only need 1/3 of the RDA. Again - THEORY! I would love to do research on that some day!! (Or see if it's out there already.)

Plus, paraphrase from the book "Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism": when you have a lower intake of calcium, your body will naturally kick into absorption gear and absorb a higher percent than when you intake high calcium (ie: your body takes what it needs regardless of how much you put in, as long as you're putting some in!) It also says "Ingestion of food or lactose along with the calcium source appears to improve overall calcium absorption..." so get it from whole foods, or take your supp. with food :)

"Calcium absorption from calcium supplements varies depending on the calcium salts." Calcium carbonate: ~39%. Calcium acetate: ~32%. Calcium lactate: ~32%. Calcium citrate: ~~30%. Calcium Gluconate: ~27%.

"Calcium carbonate from fossilized oyster shell or dolomite, however, may be contaminated with aluminum and lead. Bone meal preparations also contain lead. Ingestion of these products as a calcium source should be avoided, because excessive intake of these toxic metals may occur."

Vit D helps with absorption, so get your sun! :)

My two cents :D

emoticon it is from years of friends and family members trying to poke holes as to where I get enough protein or calcium.

They all seem to forget that gorillas are the strongest animals alive yet the eat no meat nor drink milk.

I do take a calcium pill that has Vitamin D and magnesium in it.Vitamin D helps increase calcium absorption. I take Caltrate Plus.

Seaweed is a powerhouse of calcium. (arame, dulse, hijiki, kelp, and wakame) Good sources of calcium can be found in dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cabbage, parsley and watercress. Dried figs and dates along with nuts, especially almonds and Brazil nuts also contain significant calcium. Sesame seeds and tahini are very rich in calcium. Fruits such as persimmons, currants, figs, and blackberries are good sources of calcium.

Broccoli also has tons of calcium then a glass of milk.

As far as Sparks is concerned I don't meet the Calcium requirement but when I got my blood work; not sure if they check that too but I didn't have a problem with that.

So I sometimes will pop a calcium pill but almost next to never.

Also to much protein depletes the calcium from your bones. emoticon

If you're looking for calcium pills I have bought the Bone-Up Vegan calcium pills.

When you eat 100% raw, how do you get the calcium your body needs? I know that spinach is high in calcium, but you would need to eat an enormous amount to get enough. Do you use calcium pills?
