PARATEACHER1 - Welcome to the team!! To track your cross-training, just go to your fitness page and track it as you would any workout. Your walking log will automatically upload to your fitness page.

Hi

I started the 5K walking yesterday. They put me with this team if it is alright with you folks.
I do have a question. How do you track the cross training segments?
It is very late and I just came on to track but need to learn how. I know how to track the walking schedule.
I shall try to come on tomorrow and tell you about myself. Para

SPARKLINGME176 - This program is similar to a Couch to 5K program, the major difference being we offer plans for walkers, joggers, beginning runners and runners. As for tracking your team goal, you need to do that seperately by going to the bottom of the team page and clicking on "track goal," then filling in the day you wish to track.

NEWTINK ~ always log your time/distance on the actual date you do it. The program at times sends the info a week early to allow for planning of your training days.

That would explain why I can't find a Walking 10K! But, your idea of doubling the 5K is a good one. I did find a 12 week intermediate walking program, too. I'm not all that excited about starting another plan during the hottest part of the summer, but I might work on the 12 week one as I can and then as it cools a bit in the fall, think about doing a "double 5K." Thanks for your feedback.

Jeannie, if you want to continue walking you can work on a couple different things. First is inccreasing your speed. Doing thiis will burn more calories and increase your cardio fitness. To do this you can actually use some of the techniques that runners use such as intervals, hills, fartleks and such. The other thing you can do is work toward a longer distance such as a 10K. Since the Spark program isn't up an running yet (no pun intended), you can take the 5K program and double the times and distances taking up to 10 weeks to reach the distance if you feel they ramp up to quickly.

Hi! I finished my 5K walk yesterday. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what to try next. I can't run, so one of the running programs is out. I've tried doing a search, but can't seem to find anything new to do. Thanks!

Jen - I'm not quite sure what you are asking, but I'll do my best with a ballpark answer.

You can start the program at anytime.

You can do your 5K anytime upon completion of the program.

If you would like, you can do one of Spark's virtual 5Ks by signing up for one which must be completed during a specified week. This is the link to the Virtual 5K page www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/v
irtual-ra
ce-home.asp

Hope that helps. If not, please be a bit more specific with your question.

GWENDO51~ When accurately tracked, miles are miles. Sometimes it feels easier on a treadmill because the ground is moving beneath you rather than you moving over the ground. And on an elliptical there is no impact so if your cardio fitness will allow, you can go faster on the elliptical shortening the time it takes to do the mile.

Since your 5K isn't until the fall, you can work on you walking speed as you increase your distance by repeating weeks.

I hope this addresses your concern.

I seimes want to change up and do a mile or two on a treadmill or ellipitical, why doesn't that translate into miles on the 5k sit. Also, my 5k is with my gym and it's nit until fall.

Thanks Janet. I'll try that. The first couple times I had a bit of a shock when I logged in and my fitness minutes and calories were way out of whack. Mostly log on with my phone so I can't see everything until I go on the PC.

SANDUR123 ~ The information automatically transfers over to your fitness page. So if you find it puts in the wrong calories, etc, you can "delete" it from your fitness page and enter the correct information. This is the only way to prevent doubling.

OKay, I am having troubles with logging the mileage. I add my walk from my saved routes then I go to the 5K page and log my fitness for the day. It then doubles up on my fitness page then. Should i just add it from the 5K page- I would have to go into the tracker and verify how long, calories ect as I dont always remember to set my pedometer. Is there any way to stop this doubling up from happening?

THank you for any advise.

CTSTAMPER ~ doing the program over 10 weeks is just fine. On any repeat weeks, just enter your distance/time on your fitness page. Use the training log to enter the first time you do that time/distance.

I signed up for the virtual walk for the end of August. Because of my age (65) I am starting the weekly training more slowly. I plan to do the training sessions for 10 weeks instead of 5 in hopes of being able to stick with it and not "burn out". I am hoping I will get as much benefit as if I were doing it as suggested.

SANDUR123 ~ go ahead and just double what is on the 5K training log since you are on the way there anyway. You can enter your actual distance that you do. It doesn't have to be exactly what is shown. Spark is working on a 10K program, but I don't know when it will be done, so doubling works pretty well for those who are ready to take the next step.

TDWANDD2MYK9 ~ You can start the program when you are ready, but you will continue to receive the weekly emails. If you want to restart the emails, you can do so by changing the week you are on which is listed on the log page. Doing a virtual 5K works just fine. Maybe even get some friends together and have some fun. I do know the UK has 5K races in some areas, so you could join one of those if you wish.

I joined the 5k walking challenge yesterday, but put down that I wanted to do it on 1st of September, I presume I just keep the email link and press start end of Aug? I had wanted to take a look at the virtual walk as i'm in UK and a lot of things here don't relate to us! Any ideas?
Thanks.

HI,

When I joined I chose "walk 10K" , when I look at the tracker it says 3.1 miles as the end goal. Do I just forget that and when I enter it just enter in the 10K??? Do I then just double the times or distance that is on the 5K page and do that, or can i reset it so its got the 10K info????

(I have gotten up to 7.75KM on my dog walks so quite obviously choosing to do the 5K would be just plain cheating. )

Just went to my fitness page and boy did they change it! Not happy with the new format either. I couldn't find where to put most of my workouts. However, I did find a button on it that says change to the "old fitness tracker." I clicked on it and there they all were again. Give that a try.

I joined the 5K challenge, but now my strength training exercises went away from my fitness page. How do I get them back?

ADLER24- 5K in 48 minutes is an awesome speed, and YES your arms and chest might be sore. When we push we use our arms/chest muscles much more. After doing my first distance race, my arms and chest were sore for days. Just do some gentle stretching and go for a walk. Congrats!

Completed my first 5k walk yesterday in 48 minutes. I felt a tired at the end but energized the rest if the day. I'm a bit sore today in places that didn't hurt during my training. My arms and my chest. Is this common?

If you are using distance as a warm-up say slower paced walking, you can include that in the time/distance if you want. That is up to you. Otherwise you can do dynamic stretching as a warm-up (leg swings, walking lunges, butt kicks, squats, arm swings, etc).

What about warm-up/cool-down? If I'm suppose to run for 15 minutes, or 1.5 miles, do i warm up for 5 minutes first? or does that five minutes count as part of the time/distance quota?

@FLAMINGOMAMA66 - The only way to "reset" the program is to leave the program (at the bottom of the training log page) and rejoin. Someday they might make it easier. You don't however have to leave the actual team.

My knee is doing better so I need to restart the program but it still has my first two days in week one marked as completed. How do I "reset" the program? Thanks for any help!

On your fitness page you need to add mileage tracking for the program to track. That should fix the problem.

This week I joined this group and when I go to the actual program, I get the screen for each week and for week 1, it says to "click here to track" and when I click there, a box pops up and says that it is unable to find the goal. Can anyone help me and tell me how to track my progress. I have walked every day this week and would like to get credit for it.
Thanks!

From this forum, click on the team name above. That will take you to the team page. Then click on the red underlined "Spark People's 5K Your Way Walking Program". Scroll down where it lists the 4 programs. Click on the "Go to Program" button. That will take you to the log page.

OR

Go to your start page and under "My Personalized Programs" click on the 5K Your Way, and that should take you directly to the training log.

Hope this helps.
