CLOVER2 - Basically, all you should have to do to track your training is to log only the walking info into the 5K Your Way training log. It should automatically transfer to your fitness tracker. Then any other fitness you do can be logged directly into your fitness tracker and should not be entered into the training log. Hopefully this will stop the duplications.

Also, make sure that the date that shows up on the data entry window is the correct one.

It's me again, I am still doing something wrong here. Apparently I am logging in too many times, I went in to log it into the spot available here in the team and it gave Saturday's to me again! Could you please tell me what I need to be doing so I don't give myself too many total minutes? I mean, it looks really good on my log, but it ain't the truth! emoticon

What I am going to do in the future is only log my time in here, that seems to be the answer to not duplicating and I'll just work out around the house to make up for the extra time and just not log it, but I would like to be sure that I just need to do my logging in here from now on, will that help?

Hello! I have a question. I joined the team just recently and am still getting the hang of how to log my time. I put the 15 minutes in my fitness tracker and then realized that I needed to put it in the other tracker so I took it out of the main tracker but it left the 15 minutes in my time registry, giving me 15 minutes too much. Then today I did my first mile, I registered the 24 minutes that it took me and that I walked 1.11 miles as that is what what I had actually done on my pedometer. When I looked at the time registry again, it had actually given me 34 minutes of actual time. This has ended up with 25 minutes too much for the week. Is there something I am doing wrong? In the past if I put too much in my tracker and took it out it automatically took it out of the registry but not this time, and why did it give me an extra 10 minutes on Saturday? Could you help? Thank you!

SUEKKY~ so it sounds like you are good. Just remember to take at least one rest day per week to give your muscles a chance to rebuild and heal.

@ Becky - Cross training is basically using your muscles in a different manner. Biking, elliptical, rowing, steppers, swimming, dancing, tennis, etc., these are all cardiovascular cross training. You should also add weight/resistance training to your exercise routine. These will help strengthen and tone muscles as well as improve your core strength. Yoga and tai chi are other good relaxing cross training exercises.

Hello!
I slacked off a bit on my walking...chronic illness gets in way sometime, but I am ready to start anew. I see a new team goal of cross training. What exactly does that mean? I find when I do spark team goals I tend to be more involved. I was walking a 5k about 1X/month before I got ill this time and would like to get back to that. In 6 months I lost quite a bit of weight by just walking everyday or 5-6 times/week. Now I am at a plateau and putting weight back on, lost quite a bit because of illness...this is never a good thing, but still want to lose weight healthily. If someone could explain cross training I might add it to my goals and have a better chance of losing and keeping it off while gaining my health back. Thanks.

GAMEGIRL7200 - If you use the elliptical do so for say one, maybe two trainings a week. Part of the benefit of walking is the impact. Being low impact it is a benefit to your joints and muscles. So I'd say split your time between the TM and E.

What about an elliptical machine? I find I enjoy it more than a treadmill- I feel like I'm working harder/getting more done. Can I count those miles here?
I will be walking outside once the weather cooperates, but so far -15 is the warmest it has been for two weeks, coldest was about -40. If I have to spend time outside, it is for shoveling snow or carrying in firewood.

@DARKANGEL2011 - the program is the same whether you use the treadmill or walk outside. Technically it is more challenging it walk outside. Treadmills are more forgiving (softer) and help propel you. If the weather will allow you to walk outside then how about incorporating treadmill with outside? But yes, it's ok to do the program totally on a treadmill if that is what you wish.

CMCRAVENS ~ Maybe with money on the line (the gym) it might give you a little more incentive to complete this time. One tip is to litterally schedule your gym time into your day as you would any other important appointment. Then treat it as such. You can do this.

This is my 3rd time joining this program. they say the 3rd time is a charm. I also connected this to my FB page. So maybe with my family and friends through there I'll be more motivated to complete. I had also signed up for the virtue race and did not complete. I have a bad habit of starting something and not completing it. I really need incouragement to complete this. Can anyone help with this???? I do enjoy walking and just started jogging on treadmill. Its all about completing and sticking to a gym to keep track of time and miles. If I had anyother way of completing this I would and save my money. Here it is winter and really cold out. That is the only reason I'm sticken to the gym.

Marlis ~ You can just ignore the week 2 info. You might want to go to the training log page and force it to go to week 3 by changing the week by clicking on "My Current Week" drop down. Then click on "Save Preferences" button. It should then generate the week 3 email.

And it's not a bother. Ask away, that's what I'm here for.

Marlis ~ Sorry I missed your previous question. I try to keep up with all the threads, but occasionally miss one.

Since we don't have anyway to "reset" the training log the only way to start anew is to leave the training program (it's at the bottom of the training log page) and then rejoin the program. You don't have to leave the team, just the training program. This will reset everything so you can enter new data.

Janet, I have a question I put on another thread, but didn't get a response. I found this thread, and hope that your can answer what I am after:

I joined a 5K last spring, when getting back to exercising after a total hip-replacement. It helped me to get back to walking.

Now, I signed up last week for another 5K, but when I want to record my miles or minutes, I am being returned to the earlier page with my old records, times and minutes. I haven't figured out how to erase those numbers, so I can post the new ones. What am I doing wrong?

BLCTLEW ~ I think they send out reminders all at once. The only way you might get one either sooner (next week's) or later (last week's) would be to change the week you are currently on. This can be done from the log page.

I searched for an answer to my question and couldn't find one so please excuse if this has been answered before.

I love the email of the weekly plan with the little "track now" button that is so easy to add to my fitness tracker. However, my training week starts on Thursday is there anyone to change the setting for the email reminder?

Janet - Thank you for moderating this group. You always seem to answer quickly and are truly helpful.

I read thru the 4 or so pages of other posts, hoping to find my answers but didn't. I did notice so many REPEATED questions, with you having to answer them over and over. It would make things easier on you if there was a Questions & Answer Section, that addresses these common questions, so we wouldn't have to ask and make you answer them so many times.

I realize the "compliants and questions" I have about the titles and descriptions of the different walking/jogging/running programs not being completely correct are not your fault. I'm glad you are going to pass my concerns on to those that can clear it up / fix the problems. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I promise not to ask any more questions in this group. Monday I'll be in one of the other groups. emoticon

Thanks again!!!!!
Patty

PITTERPAT5 - Jogging is just a slower form of running. So as a Rookie Running program they list it as jogging so participants don't feel the need to try to go faster than they are ready for.

I sent the information you gave me about the programs not matching to the coaches. I imagine they will be fixing it when the tech team has a chance.

As for time vs. miles... There are some schools of thought that believe just doing time is as good as doing a specific number of miles. While I don't subscribe to this, hey I'm just a recruited spark member team leader and had nothing to do with setting up the programs.

You can always do the intervals for the prescribed number of repeats, then if you feel you need more distance, finish up by adding enough distance to complete the distance shown on the walking program.

Holler if you have any other concerns or questions.

Janet, thanks for your response, but your answer didn't really address the fact that the 8 Week Rookie Running Program, only requires walking and jogging - NO RUNNING. So why is it called a Running Program? Comparing the two, it looks easier than the Walk/Jog Program.

Also the fact that the printed programs should at least match the online program as far as the times and repeats. Isn't that a mistake on the part of who put them on SparkPeople, I think they should match.

Also I noticed that the 8 Week Running and the Walk/Jog list workout times only and don't have any days where it lists miles to walk like on the Walking program. Is there a reason for that?

@PITTERPAT5 ~ First of all let's define jogging vs. running. Jogging is done at a more relaxed pace and for many is done for weight loss. Running is done at a much faster pace. Some figure running is an 8 minute/mile pace or faster. Others figure the terms are interchangable at slower paces. Personally I figure if you are going slower than a 12 minute mile, you are jogging.

Next, as to which program. If you haven't ever been a runner, I would suggest doing the walk/jog program especially if your walking is at a slower pace (15 minute/mile or slower). This will allow you to increase your stamina and speed gradually.

As for the difference between the printed and the sample version of the training program, it's up to you as to which one you want to follow. Personally, I would say, if you feel able to do the extra repeat, then go for it.

I'm on week 5 and want to join another 5K Your Way Program when I finish this one on Sunday. From the Titles, I assumed the Walk/Jog Program would come next. I just looked at the 8-Week Rookie Running Program. Since I thought jogging should come before running, I thought this would be my "3rd progam" after the walk/jog one. When I read the description of the 8-Week Rookie Running Program it only asks for walking and jogging. No mention of running. I tried to compare the two programs and they look so similar, I can't figure out which one is "easiest" for someone just finishing the Walking Program. Only big difference is one is for 8 weeks and the other 5 weeks.

Also, when printing out the programs I noticed Day 6 of each week doesn't match what is on the computer screen where it just shows the 3 days, verses the 7 day print out. Which is correct? For instance, it says Repeat 5 times on computer and Repeat 4 times on printout.

Thanks,
Patty

This may have already been asked, but if I track for my training, do I need to track separatly for my fitness minutes or do they automatically get added?

Beth, you can always go to a mall or find an indoor track at a rec center. There are also treadmills and ellipticals.

I use the "Walk Away the Pounds" video when it is nasty out. That way I still get some walking done.

Ok I have a dumb question. What is everyone else doing for walking if it is raining out. It is suppose to start raining where I am out tonight and last pretty much all week. I have just completed day 2 of week 1. But it is kinda hard to walk in the poring down rain.

@SARA474~ Just go ahead and enter the info from whatever distance you do for your training day. If you are already doing more than the distance/time listed there is no reason to go less, unless you want to work on something like speed or endurance.

@MOONSTONEWOLF~ I will go for weeks without entering info in my fitness log. As long as you keep track of what you are doing in some manner. Just sit down every now and then and enter it into your log.
