This may sound like a stupid question, but I always thought the only stupid question was one that wasn't asked so here's my question, how do I get back to my planner for the 5k challenge?

I have sent a message to Coach Nicole to have the techs look into this issue. Hopefully it will be fixed ASAP. I guess no matter how much testing is done before going public, there has to be some sort of hiccup emoticon . Thanks all for being so understanding.

I clicked to put it back into week 1 and it automatically clicked me back into week 2. Decided to just go ahead and cram weeks one and two into the same week, because I usually walk between one and two miles a day, anyway.

Same thing happened to me, only a couple of days in and it switched me to week 2... There is a drop-down box and I was able to switch it back to week one... However I can only track 3 days of the program (the actual walking part and not the rest/cross days)... I thought I had seen a place to log activity every day but now I can't find it... Did I just dream it up or am I not looking in the right place?

Gypsy,
Same thing happened to me; trying to add my second workout and it wants me to be in my second week! Hmmm... Oh, well, I added it onto week one anyway. emoticon

I just joined the team 2 days ago. I went to track my second day and my planner insists I should be on my second week! Should I cram week 1 and 2 into the same week to catch up, or wait a day between?

There is!! On the Fitness Maps! You plot out your walk. Under neath it it asks how long your walk was in minutes. You type it in. The Fitness Maps are located on your Fitness page, not 5K page.

You fitness tracker has *maps* that you can chart your walk/run with. This way you know how far you traveled. You plug in your total time walked and it calculates your speed.

is there an approximate way to measure this by time and pace????

I walk every day. I am up to 2 miles. I can't jog because of my total knee replacements. I am also under time constraints; the grand kid I watch only naps for about thirty minutes. I take him on the short block and he falls asleep; then I do the long block. I have had to take him on the long block a couple of times. Now that we are getting more light, I might be able to get my walks in in the morning. At the end of four weeks there should be plenty of light for the forty minute walk.

Does the forty minutes have to be at one time?

Coach,

Is there a way to make these new 5K routines repeatable? When I finish this Walk Your Way 5K, I will want to repeat the plan again at some point, to improve time, or even to get back into fitness after child birth. But I think the option should be allowed so that we can come back to these as often as we like for various personal reasons. Trophies don't have to be awarded, but I think it would be beneficial for tracking purposes as well as motivation to compare my various walking paces side by side.

Tracking your workouts is not necessary to complete this challenge or receive your trophy, but logging the workouts is probably helpful in general. You can log them in whatever way works for you.

I hope that answers your questions,

Hello,
Please, I am confused about " log your workouts". Usually I log in my workouts with the map route tracking, should I do that also in the team? or once is ok? Thanks

Sure! Sharing your race result in this Team is optional. You can do whatever you'd like when you do your race. If you signed up for a virtual 5K, you'll post it there (and get prompted by email to post it that week in case you forget).

So I have yet another question, which may hae been answered elsewhere but I do not recall....

On the day or week of the race, do we just do our 5k and report our time here on the team page?

Sure! You don't need to follow this program if you're already fit enough to walk a 5K (and it sounds like you are, or that you're nearly there). You can still join the virtual 5K and don't need to follow any training plan to do that if you don't want to.

I walk 2.86 mile nearly every day, but joined the virtual race because I have never been in one in my life.

Can I just record my regular walks on the tracking sheet?

Thanks BOBSMYUNCLE for the link to the site. Definitely some great info. To add to it, you can have your gait analyzed at running stores to see if you need less or more support. Be sure to take control of your consultation, though, as some salespeople like to push their one preferred shoe. Try on lots of shoes, make them work...lol...

Walking tip: Good shoes are only part of the equation. Also invest in a few pairs of performance material socks that will wick away moisture. No cotton socks, as when they get moist they stay that way which promotes blisters and stinky feet and shoes.

Your workouts at Curves sound like you are already cross-training. If it is working for you, then keep it up, but also be sure to mix things up every 6 weeks or so by adding something and dropping another, or changing intensity. Bodies need to not get to comfortable with routine.

My regular exercise routine is to walk to Curves, which is about a 1.5 mile walk. That takes a little over half an hour, usually. Then I do my 30-minute Curves circuit plus stretching. I take the bus home. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I also have a Zumba class at Curves along with the Curves Circuit. After looking at the first week training plan, I'm wondering if I should modify my routine. I've never thought about cross-training.

These programs were definitely designed for beginners who are not already walking as far or as frequently as you seem to be. It's possible that you don't need to follow this particular walking program--or that you might be ready for the walk/jog program if you wanted to challenge yourself more. Check out www.sparkpeople.com/walking for some workouts to help increase walking speed. If you're already fit enough and accustomed to walking this much, I don't think walking 6 days per week will hurt anything. You might also be able to jump ahead in the training plan if the later weeks are closer to your current fitness level.

I am doing the Walk your way challenge.

As I have been a walker, I find that I do more than the program says, but I'm trying to increase my speed.

I walk every day as my dog needs it. Will this hurt my training? I will plan to rest one day with just short walks.

You can follow the program at any pace, so if you miss a week or repeat a week that is fine. When five weeks has passes a new icon will appear on everyone's training page that says "I Finished the Program. Get My Trophy." (something similar to that anyway!) All you do is click that when you have finished training--whenever that is. But it won't appear sooner than 5 weeks.

Hope that helps!

thanks for the cross training info.. i guess i was thinking that certain activities were paired with certain others.. guess that doesn't matter.

You can do additional walking but are only required to log the required time/distance for the 3 days of the program each week. If you are walking daily, use that time to reinforce what you did for the program whether you choose to repeat an amount of time or a distance. If you do this choose one of the shorter times/distance for the week to allow your body some recoup time.

Not sure I haven't made a mistake tracking this program: I need to walk 7 days a week, I think, because my DH needs to in order to keep on track for herself... and I need to support that because so far it's working for her.

So, I tracked my second day today, but I think it's meant to be tracked tomorrow.

My question is, can I do this program in an excellerated way, just keeping to the same goals for each week, or should I just do whatever I can whenever I can, and let it be truly MyWay?

Any advice will be appreciated!

Thank you! On my BLC15 team, I've been striving for a 7-days routine, but looking back I see that that's not realistic anyway; I always wind up with at least one day without workout time.
I think I'll schedule my cross-training for the same days, but later on. That way either stationary cycling or tai chi or both will be doable and I won't exhaust myself. Also, I can try to make my workouts longer and on my rest days I'll only do strength training, but I'll still get in the same amount of cardio overall.

I don't walk fast, but I don't care; as long as I'm walking I'll be happy!

Ok, let's see if I can answer all your questions.

EmilyD - While the idea is to complete the program in 5 weeks, the goal is to complete the program. Since you are up to 20 minutes of walking already you may find doing the mile isn't that much farther than you have already gone. At the bottom of this post I will give a couple tips that might help everyone as this first week unfolds. As for the trophy if it takes longer than 5 weeks, I'll have to check, but I would think completing the program will get you the trophy as long as you log your workouts.

Sookie, Lizzy & Faye - Cross training is something that will compliment your walking by using muscles in a different way. With a walk schedule of 3 days a week, you will want to incorporate up to 3 cross training workouts. If you are going to do a cross training workout on the same day as you walk, then I would say walk first and do the cross train later after you feel recovered from the walk. I would suggest doing some of the cross training on alternating days. If you do this you can have the option of taking an extra day off if you are finding recovery slow. As to which is best for you, that is something you will have to discover for yourself through a little experimentation.

Cross training can involve cycling, swimming, the elliptical, strength training with weights/resistance, yoga, pilates, dancing, even tai chi. Duration will depend on your fitness level, but aim for 15 minutes and build up from there. You will find as your walking fitness increases, so will your cross training fitness.

As you mix up the use of your muscles your body will burn calories more consistantly, even when you aren't working out which leads to the next thing and that is days off.

You need to take at least one day off. That means no workout. You will need to let your muscles repair and rebuild. If you don't do that you will be more susceptible to injury. And hey rest is one more way to keep those muscles guessing, what's next?

Walking tip: Posture. You need to stand straight with your shoulders back & down (no turtle shoulders) and head up. Look about 10 feet in front of you so your head doesn't drop. This will allow you to get the oxygen you need to feed those muscles. Don't take big steps, smaller strides are more efficient.

I was reading about cross-training with a stationary bike, and it said to do cycling later the same day of walking; but I usually walk every single day, and don't really have 'off' days. Will this work with the 5K your way training program?

ps sry about my profile pic; it's my booby prize for gaining this week in the BLC15 team i'm on, LOL

I'm with Sookie - could you give us some guidance, or lead us to a place where we can get more guidance, on the cross training aspect? What sort of activities do you suggest, and for how long?

Q - on the scheduled cross training days, what is the time length for cross training?

Thanks for the tip. I'm thinking of trying the first 15 minute walk tomorrow morning as I have a swim date tonight. No time like the present. If not now, when?

If you can't move as fast as they want you to, will you still get the trophy?

Like it may take me more that two days in one week
to get to the point I can walk 1 mile at a time.

Today was my first day, I had walked 20 min, but I built to that over several weeks.

You can start training on any days of the week, even start mid-week if you prefer. Really, it is up to you!

does it matter on which day the weeks start for this challenge? Should they be Sunday-Sat (or Mon-Sun)? will it make for confusion if they start mid calendar week? Thanks
