I still haven't seen it so maybe next week I will try to go see it and then weigh in on the conversation. I actually haven't read the book either so I have no preconceived ideas of what it should be about.

I think the trick here is to just treat them as two totally separate items. I was hoping to get to the movie today, but it didn't happen. I will try again next week.

I strive for sane each and every day emoticon It's not about letting go, and I totally commiserate on trying to get your brain to not compare to two as you're watching it. There were characters that I wanted to see, but I have to admit I fell in love with many of the new characters they created! It was pure zombie awesomeness!!

And it gave me an idea for a special novella to include in my Days with the Undead series. I'm so excited to get to writing it!!

You are totally right. That is the most sane answer that i have heard yet. And i need to let it go. The movie itself was not bad. Brad Pitt looks like Billy Ray Cyrus, the achy braky heart virus. But not a bad movie jumpy and intense at some parts.

I've read the book and loved it!

I saw the movie and LOVED it!!

This is one of the those times when you have to let it be okay for a movie to not follow the book. The world is the same, but the movie has created another aspect of that world. I knew when they announced they were making a movie that staying close to the book would never work as it's really just a collection of interconnected yet standalone short stories.

You don't have to trust me on this, but I swear if you give it a chance, it will win you over! I still get goosebumps when I think of the subtle nuances of the story. It's an intelligent and terrifying thrill ride.

I'll be seeing it again and I hope it's soon.

I just saw WWZ. I have read the book and listened to the audiobook so many times that it was very tough for me to shut my brain down. I kept attempting to find a correlation to the book. There was some coorelation, but very little. I wanted Yonkers......I wanted that Henry Rollins character as a body gaurd at a rich guy's fortified house. I wanted the neighborhood watch guy in the wheelchair. I wanted to see the blind guy or the family trying to survive in the wilderness. So many holes. When I separate the book from the movie, it was pretty good. It at least kept my attention. They need to change the name of the movie. But oh well. It wasn't bad as long as i did not try to connect it to the book. Total kryptonite ( My stupid brain). Has anyone else seen it yet? Dont make me feel like I am in the wrong AA class.

A, I drew the line at Epic. Just can't do it. I'll do Monsters U instead.

I think the original feel of the book would be far better suited to a long form storytelling media, like TV. A summer blockbuster movie has two hours to grab you, enthrall you, and spit you back out again.

I could see it as episodic, each interview serving as the background for each show. But I could also see it working as a feature length movie as well. Then again, I'm not sure my hubby would enjoy that kind of storytelling - he often asks 'what just happened' or 'where did they go', not always following the train of thought for shows/movies.

Candy and Gene, do you think the book would have been better adapted to a mini-series, in order to maintain the multi-perspective storytelling?

I have seen all those except WWZ, and you will enjoy whatever you "have to" watch. Monsters University is sweet and smart and HILARIOUS; the story in Epic is kind of "meh," but it's magical-fun with good action; and Man of Steel...well, everyone should have known Clark Kent was an alien right after he hit puberty, because he's way too handsome to be from Earth.

I have to admit I've become somewhat a snob about this moving. emoticon
A lady at work was asking about the movie and I rattled off something about not going to see it and waiting until it's available on Netflix because the movie doesn't resemble the book much at all - based solely on the previews and trailers I've seen.
I really enjoyed the book and if the movie makers had figured a way to follow that method of story-telling, the progressive thread moving from experience to experience, I think it would be better.

Of course I couldn't tell you the last movie we went to see in the theater. The last Sherlock Holmes movie maybe?

As for a sequel.. do you think they'd try to adapt the Zombie Survival Guide? How badly sideways could that go?

I tried, and couldn't get into the book. Maybe I was jut too unfocused at the time.... which isn't uncommon for me.

So World War Z and Man of Steel are showing at the drive in theater this weekend... but because I have kiddos, I have to go see Monster University and Epic on the other screen there instead. Kind of wish I didn't have to take my kids to the drive in this weekend. LOL.

Here is the thing guys... don't forget that the movie has very, very little in common with the book.
I love the way the book told the story through so many different eyes. But the movie keeps the story more focused on one person to keep it moving faster.

I might give the audio book another go. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for certain genres and when I go back, they hit me a different way.

I could not get through the audio book the first time I "picked it up" so to speak.

It was done as a series of first person interviews like Studs Turkl "The Good War" (which I loved by the way just to show I'm not biased against oral histories...)

My impression or World War Z was: Drone...drone...drone... describing in excruciating detail - technology, politics, economics, culture, military tactics, geo-political and environmental changes that resulted from the Zombie War.

Argh...heavily researched, all details in the book were real except the zombies, which was supposed to be the unique selling point...but I like more fiction in my fiction!

emoticon

I'm kinda glad they went in another direction with the movie. It seems like the might have used the title of the book...and that's it! for the move....

Lol...I am going to see it in spite of Brad Pitt. emoticon

But not until after July 3 when it gets released here. Or maybe I'll just spend the money on an mp3 of the audiobook, which has much better reviews.

I'll see it just because I think Brad Pitt is perfect.

Gorgeous AND a family man...what's not to love.

Will probably wait until I can stream it...

What letter comes after Z?
Given the fact that World War Z made $66 million in its first weekend (which was the biggest opening weekend ever for a zombie movie) it should come as no surprise that Paramount is interested making a sequel.
No details yet, of course.
I still haven't seen the movie. Maybe this week.
