I agree...I think that the labeling things that are obviously gluten free (like juice or something weird like that) is all marketing and trying to ride the wave. I also think that people relate gluten free to low carb and that is another reason it is trendy.

ChefSophie your friend is smart. I can't imagine how pricy it would be if you were gluten intolerant and didn't cook for yourself! I have had the opportunity to taste some packaged baked items on the market and so many of them are not good at all! Another reason to make it yourself!

I have a coworker who has to be careful of gluten, but he thinks the gluten free stuff is an excuse to increase the price. He makes most of his food so he knows it is gluten free. His greater concern is eating out. Lots of cornbread has all purpose flour in it. That's true of other things as well. But what he cooks he can control and not spend extra for gluten free.

I totally understand that there are people who are allergic to gluten or have celiac disease. But aside from that, I think this whole gluten-free mania is just another food fad. I'm seeing foods that never in history contained gluten being labeled gluten free.

Humanity has survived with gluten for millennia. Why is it so bad now?
