I think that cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Asiago, Gorgonzola, feta, fontina, grana, Muenster etc should only be labeled such if they are truly cheese from that region and that type of cheese.
Brie de Meaux for instance is a brie that is so incredibly outstanding that a brie by any other name is cheese which is fine and sometimes very good but its not BRIE!!!!
The uniqueness of the cheeses and the flavors and look of the cheeses has an incredible amount to do with the cows, goats, sheeps of the region and the cheeses reflect what their habitat is. Here is an example of what it is I am trying to explain:

I can understand it since many wines are restricted to a specific region also. If that does happen it could be carefully marketed as long as you could say Parmesan like. We have been selling sparkling wine for a number of years, not champaign. It still appeals to a wide market. For many price is a concern and domestic cheese is often less expensive.
