That is true in this area as well in that most of the shelters have older cats rather than kittens. I prefer starting with kitten myself so that bad habits can be taken care of immediately rather than trying to erase what has been in place for awhile.

I am surprised so many people want kittens, but they all say the same thing, it is hard to find kittens, most shelters only have adults and many of them are older. I donít blame parents for not wanting their kids to get attached to an older cat that will soon be gone.

Did haying yesterday but still need to unload hay wagons, hard to find help now to do farm things. This year has been hard on my knee.

Three of crickets little ones, they just fit in my hand, but 7 kittens are a load for Cricket,

I started feeding them a few days ago, no manners at all in that group, they growl and crawl right in the dish. They donít look starving with nice rounded bellies, but they sure like their food.

So happy to learn that so many kittens now have gone to new homes. Just love kittens, too, but the cat I have is all that I can cope with considering her antics.

Have had my chimneys cleaned today, and the chimney servicing the wood furnace really needed to be cleaned. I have also cleaned the kitchen wood stove, tomorrow will wash all of its surfaces down in preparation for giving it a coating of stove black. Because of my current lack of much energy, I have to take things in stages, but at least I eventually get things done.

8 kittens went to new homes in the last few days, one of them came all the way from NH to get kittens. It is easier feeding with only the 4, but Crickets 7 are starting to come out and eat, they are so tiny!

Picked fruit today, 4 different kinds of plums and some grapes, got interrupted in the middle so I will have to do pears tomorrow. Came home for someone that wanted to look at kittens, they took 2 with them, so a few less anyway.

The rain put the kibosh on the haying for the last few days, supposed to rain tomorrow too.

My new hens are laying tiny pullet eggs 4-7 a day, gradually going up, started at just one. I have been selling off one flock of chickens, and as soon as the new ones start laying bigger eggs I will sell off the other flock too.

I went down cellar this morning and picked up the planks on which I stack firewood, and swept the floor. Now to get the chord of wood stacked that is against the bulkhead door so that the men who clean my chimney can get it. They will be here next Saturday morning so I need to get this done this week. My back has been bothering me so need to take it slow and easy, but get it done. Maybe the back will strengthen as I ease into it.

I have been working on getting the shop back together, stuff that had to be moved is all over the place. I got it painted and dug out the shelving and washed it but there seems to be several brackets missing. Today I am going to get the stand in place to but the nut and bolt drawers and containers on. I am pretty sure I canít lift the stacks the way they are, so I will have to do some dismantling.

I have a couple fields down and will probably be doing some tedding and raking too!

Just trying to get caught up here after a busy week. Came down with a fall cold which didn't help my energy level at all. Didn't even make it into the Farmington Fair as I had planned to earlier in the week. I didn't have to cancel the basket class, but since it was an involved basket everyone wanted to finish next week. I sure seconded that idea.

Have a great weekend.

It is great to have friends that will come help, particularly when it is something like shoveling out manure lol

Today I ran around getting some loose ends tied up, let the calves out of the calf area so they could join the bigger cows, something that takes a lot longer then you would think, they donít like change. Then enlarged the pullets pen, and fixed where I enter so I donít have to step over a 2í high section to get in the pen, then fixed their feeder, the handle it hangs by rusted through, so I drilled new holes, it will make it much easier for me to care for them, and clean the waterer out, which needs to be done at least daily. I was very surprised to find an egg in the pen last night, they are quite young to be laying, only 15 weeks, usually pullets lat about 20-24 weeks.

The boards in the shop where the builders refinished the ceiling and walls was horrible hospital green, so I went down to the basement and found a can of yet unopened exterior flat white paint that must be several years old, took a lot of stirring to get it right. I ended up going to Patten to get a new roller, mostly because I canít get near mine until the pile of stuff gets put Bach in place. Then I painted the shop white, walls and ceiling, it is now much brighter in there!

The last task of the day was to pick the pick beans, something that needs to be done about every other day, beans for supper!

Ready to go do chores now then supper!

Raining yesterday here too, I had an appointment to breed 4 cows at noon, they were all easy thank goodness, even the two heifers. I got home and unloaded the dishwasher and started downstairs when my neighbor and one of his sometimes helpers arrived with an extra pitchfork and wheelbarrow. It was just like an assembly line getting the hen pen cleaned out, Chad did the wheelbarrowing, my neighbor did the filling and I pushed the dry litter over to him with the big snow shovel. It was nice not to have to brave the slippery manure ramp with my knee misbehaving, and it was great to get that project done. It is also fantastic to have friends!

Today I picked 2 bushels golden gage plums, lots of fruit this year. I will take most of them down to sell. Along with the 3 5 gallon pails of pears. Now I am resting my knee for a while!

Just picked more elderberries for a friend who want to make a batch of the elixir, and yes the bird are after the high berries here as well. Although there is another person wanting some elderberries, I don't think that there enough left for her to come get any.

I spent what seemed to be all morning in my vet's office with my dog for all of her shots, etc. She has an eye condition that I am going to have to put an ointment into them twice a day for at least a week. This should prove interesting as she doesn't like to have things like that done. She takes pills easily with peanut butter, and I have no problems treating her ears when necessary, but her eyes my prove difficult.

It is a nice day here, but temperatures are cooling off again.

Elderberry syrup is probably made for the same reasons except it is usually taken every day for a strengthening of the immune system to prevent you from getting colds or flu, there are tons of recipes online, and if you buy the syrup it is very expensive. I use elderberry juice, I make in my steamer juicer, it tends to be concentrated, then add fresh grated ginger, a small amount of cloves and cinnamon, simmer until the flavors combine, then when it cools add raw honey. All of the ingredients have immune boosting qualities. Several places said you can add brandy for preservation, but of course then it is not for kids. Usual dose is 1 TBS per day.

The birds are decimating my elderberries even though they are not ripe, there are all kinds of ripe choke cherries and high bush cranberries but they donít seem to be eating them. My neighbor said the same thing about his elderberries, they are still mostly red and the birds are eating them.

Not sure what the elderberry syrup consists of, but the elixir is made with brandy, raw sugar cinnamon stick and of course, elderberries. Once it is mixed together it is shaken twice a day from two to four weeks (or when times allows it to be finished) when the whole thing is processed through a jelly bag to remove the pulp from the liquid. Then let it sit for about 48 hours to let the sediment settle so that the elixir can be bottled. The directions I have for the elixir is to take a teaspoonful of it at the first sign of colds or flu and repeat every hour until symptoms disappear. Usually I can stay healthy all winter by following these directions.

My grandmother used to make an elderberry juice that we used as a base for a "punch" with ginger ale.

Got the elderberry elixir made yesterday afternoon--a double batch for both my neighbor and myself. Now all I have to do is shake it twice a day for a few weeks until I am ready to strain and finish it. My neighbor had to leave this week to help her mother in Virginia and wasn't going to make any this year because of the timing, but she has done a lot for me and I volunteered to get hers started and tend it for her.

This morning I have given the dog a bath much to her horror and gotten most of the firewood into the cellar. There are only a few pieces of firewood left outside from that cord, but my back was bothering me and I wanted to be able to straighten up when I finished. Maybe this afternoon will get it done.

My elderberries arenít quite ripe yet, they didnít seem to pollinate well this year, and oddly bloomed twice. I am not sure I will bother with them as I have plenty of juice to make syrup from last year.

Going to pick blueberries today, seems to be hanging on a long time this year, I feel like I have been picking them for a month or more.
I picked peaches also, now to process the drops before they go bad!

It is a beautiful day here as well. I have managed to get my spaghetti squash picked, and some wood thrown in to the cellar for the furnace. Need to check elderberries a little later. I am making an elderberry elixir and have a double batch made so far. A neighbor and I picked a bunch yesterday, but I find that I need to pick them as the ripen or the bird get them. Between what I want for more elixir and what a few friends want, I think my plants will be put to good use this year.

Training is a lot of work, but it really pays off because they always remember. When I got Gus, he was a year old, and never trained to come. I spent a lot of hours with a very long rope trailing behind him calling him to come and enforcing it by hauling him in when something else had his attention. I also taught him the boundaries of his yard, he was not allowed more them half way up the driveway. I did teach him to heal properly which was a real advantage because he went everywhere with me. He did have some interesting training, he never even looked at food on the counter, and when you said we are eating he would go out of the room and lay down. I never leashed him here, he was never far from my side walking on the tractor or the 4 wheeler. The first day we had him I did tie him out and he dug holes and barked, so training started immediately.

Looks like a beautiful day today, we really got a lot of rain yesterday. I decided to go to Houlton and get grain, cat food and some Glucosamine my Dr wanted me to try. I always take cash for grain so I had enough for the grain, and picked up the glucosamine, but forgot my wallet so I couldnít get anything else. I havenít done something like that for a long time! Now I will have to go back up for the rest, but not today,

I so agree with you Barb on the training of little dogs. I have a neighbor who has a few--not really sure how many, but I have seen her with at least three-- which she has a tendency to hitch outside, and they yap constantly. My dog may not be the best trained in the world, but she is not hooked out unless I am working outside. She also has been taught not to bark unless there is a reason--someone coming to the door or into the yard, etc. It was a lot of work to train her when she was little, but well worth the loving dog I have now.

True about the little dogs, yippy little ankle biters, but mostly because for some reason people rarely train little dogs, when they are misbehaving they are picked up instead of disciplined, you canít do that with big dog, so training is more necessary. Dogs are a lot of work the first few years if you do it right and train them more extensively then just house train, but many people donít even bother training big dogs, just tie them out. It sounds like one of my neighbors got a little dog, they tie it out and it is non stop yipping until they bring it back in, nobody makes any effort to correct it at all.

Looks like rain out there later today, it is very cloudy. I need to finish up with my hot Italian sausage today and stuff it after I check the seasoning. I made 6 lbs, from a Boston butt roast, tastes so much better then store sausage, all the stuff they put into sausage now makes it taste like it is not even meat. And sausage is so easy to make, breakfast sausage is particularly easy, usually just has sage in it for mild sausage, and you can buy the pork all ground. When I raised pigs we made all our own sausage along with my brothers and my nephews sausage, usually out of the shoulder and the scraps not ground, because the butcher would put about 50% fat in it if he ground it. Over the years we made both sweet and hot Italian sausage, bratwurst, liverwurst, breakfast sausage, and even did hot dogs. Now I just make a small batch of 5-6 lbs occasionally and freeze them, I am thinking of doing a maple breakfast sausage too since shoulder roasts are so cheap right now. I got the one Thursday for 99 cents a lb.

That is typical, Barb. Some adults act worse then children when they have a furbaby that they think is so wonderful and other people don't. I am not a fan of really small dogs that are usually ugly in more ways than one.

I used to help with old home days, but havenít in recent years, to tell the truth I havenít even gone down to any of the activities, mostly because of lack of time. I used to do the pet show every year, it was fun but no help so I finally quit. I would have to even set up the ring, pound in the posts and do the rope, do the organizing, and the judging. It was advertised as a childrenís pet show, but adults also entered and got really upset when someone else won. I remember a women with a chihuahua that bit me, that also yelled at me when a boy with a well behaved smart collie won.

A couple of friends and I used to take turns cooking in the bandstands cooking hot doge and onions lol.

That is so true, Barb. Usually it is the same few people doing all the work on whatever is being planned. I must admit I am very guilty for not helping out more, but I find that my energy is lacking once I get the work I must do here done. Either that or I am just lazy.

There are a lot of close together very small towns here and they each do something on different holidays or times. Millinocket does 4th of July, Sherman Labor Day, Stacyville does a strawberry festival in mid July, Patten does pioneer days the beginning of August, island Falls has Summerfest the end of July. It gets spread around that way so people donít get burned out. I have noticed even in big towns there are few people volunteering to help with things like this.

Sounds like a lot of activity planned for Labor Day in your area, Barb. I think small towns do more for holidays than larger towns. I grew up in a small town where there always seemed to be a lot going on. However, here where I live now, that is not as much planned.

Yesterday I made 4 pies, blueberry pies, and delivered them to various friends, it was fun!

I went downstairs to the stable this morning and discovered water dripping on the floor, stairs, and wall where I just paid all that money to have them fix the roof. I stopped at the guy that originally was going to do the work and het guy that did it was here later. He said the flashing up higher on the roof was bad, and the water was coming in that way and dripping down. I said I hired you to fix the roof, and if you knew the flashing was bad why didnít you say anything. He is going to fix it. It is kind of disappointing.

I donít know what they did with all the things planned for today, here it is called Old Home Days and starts with the reunions to the now closed schools, then they have activities Saturday, Sunday and Monday including a parade on Sunday and a craft fair. Bingo is played each day and there are both dinners and lunches along with the bandstand being open for hot dogs. I actually havenít been down town to participate for a few years, but used to go in my clown costume with my mini donkey Charlie, in the parade.

A rainy day for Labor Day and I have managed to get a few inside chores done. I kept pushing myself with the promise that I would finish the book I am reading once everything necessary is done.

Hope everyone has September off to a good start. I did manage to do 10 minutes on a walking video this morning. I have been very lax over the summer telling myself that I got enough steps outside to satisfy the exercise requirement. Need to work back to the videos, but since I have a knee which is bothering me, I am trying not to overdo it all at once.

A huge thank you to Barb for getting September off to a good start for us!

Fall is my favorite season as well. I enjoy the moderate days and cool nights. Perfect for getting outside chores done and going for walks.

Soon we will be hearing about apple picking, and all things will be pumpkin flavored! ha ha emoticon

Hoping most of you have today off and are doing something to refresh your being. Perhaps family time, going to a local fair, or even curling up with a good book!

If you have any favorite fall recipes you would like to share that would be fun!

Happy September!

Sandy
