Seems like the weather was the biggest topic yesterday among my egg customers. It was the slowest day I have had for the longest time. I went home by the Grindstone road, something I donít do often because it is so much longer, but more scenic. I stopped at the picnic area and watched the river roar by for a couple of hours, water is always so restful for me.

It did get brighter here off and on, but don't think the sun actually came out. At least we did not get any more rain since early this morning.

It was cloudy here this morning, the sun has been peeking out now and then for the last couple of hours, I raked up and cleaned up one of my raised beds. Right now I am taking a break from packing eggs, still have quite a few to go for egg selling day tomorrow.

We didnít have rain but it sure clouded up, some people got frost last night, and it is only 41 degrees now. I am not too into tilling my garden while it is still so wet, so I guess it will wait!

Started raining mid-afternoon today and is still raining. So much for everything drying out. I think the prediction is for rain tomorrow as well. After having the biopsy this afternoon, I am probably not going to feel like doing much gardening tomorrow anyway.

We made it the whole day without rain, yesterday, it had rained in the night quite a lot but yesterday was beautiful, and I think today is following suit! Need to go pick more asparagus today!

Beautiful day here! Just did all the lawns that I can do with the rising mower. Probably won't do anymore today. I did a lot with the push mower on Saturday.

Eileen, I would love to have a greenhouse like that here! The several varieties in a pack sound perfect. I buy 6 packs sometimes even though it is too much because the single plants cost more then the bigger pack if I want 2 or 3. I never found the peppers I wanted both places only had new ace and jalapeŮos, neither of which I like. I used to raise my own, but that takes time and space I donít have right now. I will hit a few more small greenhouses to see what I can find.

I got tons done yesterday! I finally pulled that huge limb from the tree by my terraces, it is on the ground now ready to be sawed up! Also got the ram sheared, and all the lambs banded. I started to finish canning the last batch of chicken broth only to discover I was out of lids. I hope I can pick up some today.

Barb, there is a wonderful greenhouse here in Farmington that has really lush plants, and such a great variety to chose from. The thing I like about this greenhouse that she has variety packs of tomatoes and peppers that have two each of three different kinds of the plant in one flat. This is perfect for me with my raised beds, and not wanting to have an overrun of one kind of tomato or pepper that I will have to deal with coming the fall. I did buy two extra tomato plants as I like to have one roma type for sauces, etc.

Our weather continues to be weird here. And, yes, I have experience the bad weather in one place with nothing a short distance away. The worst this has ever happened to me was during one winter when I was teaching basket weaving in a town about 25 miles away. When I left the class that night, it had started to snow very lightly so I thought I would have not problem getting home. About five miles further along it was starting to snow very hard with almost whiteout conditions. I barely made it up a step hill. By the time I got within 10 miles of home, a trailer truck had jack-knifed on a hill and I was held up in traffic waiting to for the road to be cleared. Within a mile or two of home, there was absolutely no snow at all. When I walked into the house my husband questioned why I was so late, and I explained the weather problems with his reply that we had no snow where we live!

Our weather can be weird, one day it was pouring here and I went down the road about a half mile and they never had a drop of rain.

I picked up tomatoes, broccoli and parsley, but one greenhouse only had really tiny peppers and the other varieties I didnít want, guess I will have to look around some more. One greenhouse that is quite large had literally 1000ís of geraniums at least half the greenhouse was geraniums. Not much variety there. I did get a black iris, they are so stunning when they bloom. I havenít planted anything yet, donít even have my raised beds ready.

My cat Mischief had kittens yesterday afternoon, they donít seem to pick very private places, she has them in the llama pen, and was very happy for me to come look at them, all purring and proud of herself. She is a smaller dainty cat, and no where near as big as Cricket, but she had 7 kittens, they are tiny compared to Crickets two. All but one is gray.

Barb, I have seen the different types of weather from one side of a hill to another in my area of the state as well.

I went to a local greenhouse here, and they did have most of the plants I wanted
I could not get something because they were already out of stock. So many beautiful plants

Weird how Maine weather is so different in close areas, of course a lot of my weather is driven by that very close large mountain lol. It was raining today when I left for Houlton, very dense cloud cover. As I traveled North toward Houlton the clouds cleared and it was sunny up there. It is sprinkling here at home now.

I went to get grain, stopped at two greenhouses, it is so nice to see all the flowers. Looks like business has been slow in the greenhouses, lots of plants everywhere. I guess it has been so cold and rainy nobody wants to go get flowers and veggies.

Thanks, Barb. My doctor called this morning and said that the blood test indicated the possibility of inflammation in a temple artery and he would be setting up and appointment for a biopsy. Hopefully I will be on the mend soon and can get on with all the work I need to do.

It is sunny here today, but very breezy. Perhaps the wind will help dry out the field as I have standing puddles everywhere. I even have a small pond in the middle of the field that has attracted some Canadian geese.

Rain rain go away, getting pretty soggy out there, and it has been chilly. I finished off the roosters yesterday, only got 4 done the first day, cut my finger bad on the first one, I hate skinning chickens, it is hard to see what you are doing, much easier to pluck! I got the first 4 cut up and will do the other 3 today and get them all started making broth. I am going to take the rest of the onions and slice them up to make onion soup since they are begining to sprout. Inside work seems best today!

Hope you find out about your headaches Elieen. I have been getting a lot of headaches lately but it is due to the secondary cataracts making it hard to see to read.

I ran around yesterday like a whirling dervish, filled the whole 16í trailer with dump things, took the old dishwasher, some rusted through barrels, lots and lots of cardboard, and bags of hay twine and feed bags. Much easier to load and unload from the trailer! It is so nice that the guy that runs the transfer station helps everyone unload, if he hadnít I would have held up the line for quite a while! I really like that big pile of cardboard being gone! Rain today, I am going to make the roosters disappear and become chicken broth!

I can imagine that you were beyond tired by the time you got home. My dog would have been turning inside out if I had a long day away like that.

Although today has only been partly cloudy here, it is breezy and not that warm. Hopeful we will have warmer days next week. Where is our spring

This has been a very cold damp May, I remember some very warm days last May! I spent way too much time in Bangor yesterday, my neighbor was having a couple procedures and needed a driver. Getting up at 4 am was a real downer, especially since I only got to bed at midnight. He had to be in Bangor at 7:30, 90 mile drive. We took my truck because I wanted to get some plywood and a new toilet. I found one I liked at Home Depot a couple months ago, the feature that impressed me, believe it or not, was the insulated tank. My spring water comes in the house at about 34-35 degrees, so moisture beading on the outside of the tank is a constant problem and why I put a tank cover on it to soak up the water, it needs to be washed frequently. I am hoping that the insulation will prevent all that.

The whole getting home at 1 or 2 was not a reality, I had lunch and went back to check since I didnít get a call, but they hadnít even started the second procedure. Finally got a call at 6:30, but then he had to wait for the doctor and it ended up 7:30 before we got out of there. We stopped quick for the soup, salad and breadsticks meal at Olive Garden, and didnít get home until after 10 pm, I am sure the critters thought I deserted them. I didnít even unload the truck, just did chores and went to bed!

Going to try to get that dump run in I never made the other day today!

They said rain today but it is clear out there so far, going to make a dump run today, gathering all the stuff together takes quite a while with all the bags in the various parts of the barn.

That would have been delicious! Thanks for the thought! Fencing has been pretty brutal the last 3 days, but I did get the cows into the upper pasture tonight about sundown. Would have been quicker but I was filling a trailer with manure about every half hour for several hours. My neighbor that has the lung problem was filling the raised beds we built him last fall. He didnít latch the gate after getting stuck and the cows got out, fortunately they ran into the horse pasture where I was working on fences and from there came to me when I produced some grain as a snack. It always worries me that they could go to the road, although there is an orchard between there and the road.

I am totally exhausted tonight, good thing it is going to rain tomorrow, so no fencing!

Wish I lived closer to your Barb. I would bring you a bowl of that chili that was very good.

I have done my quota of dirt moving of the day, as I am fighting sore muscles and would rather not making them sorer. Hopefully they will loosen up as the outdoor work is approached gradually. The damp weather we have been having has not helped at all. It doesn't seem as windy here today.

The chili sure sounds good, it was quite chilly here in the afternoon with all that wind. I worked on fences from 1 until 8 pm, got a lot done but no where near finished with the three east side pastures I need to have done ASAP. There was an excessive amount of new posts to put in, I can feel it in my back and neck muscles. I think I may even get to bed before midnight tonight!

It is rather cold here today, but the sun is trying to shine. Am going to work a little bit more on the sod replacement this morning. Have got some baskets stained already. Then I am going to make a big pot of chili.

Wow today is very raw, so much different then yesterday! The rain, cold and wind made me glad I had needed to go get grain! The guy came to look at the roof section on the stairway to the lower part of the barn. It is going to be more then I was hoping but I canít do another winter falling down icy stairs. I pretty much froze while I was waiting for him to measure and give me a quote. Due to all that lunch was delayed until 5 pm, I was starved!

I had a lot of plowing damage to sod too, but the worst was where they pushed the snow banks back, about 10 feet from the edge of the road, big bucket, took sod about 1í down in a 6í section that is 4 feet wide. Not sure where all the sod went, I put all I could find up there by the road in the hole, but it didnít make a dent. The stuff I did is no where near as bad, mostly because I care where I get too deep and correct right away.

It is nice here today, and I spent time outside picking up fallen branches and getting them ready to use for kindling. I also spent a few minutes trying to repair the damage done to my lawns by the snowplowing. There is a lot of sod, etc. that need to be moved, but I am going to have to work at it slowly. My wrist which was broken last year does not like to do a lot of lifting and raking, and many other things that it complains about. Hopefully I will get all the dirt moved back to where it belongs eventually.

I spent quite a while doing fences yesterday an pretty much froze, good thing I was moving around a lot. The winter damage is incredible, never saw so much damage in one winter. One side of one pasture took me 2 hours, most wooden post had all 5 wires on the ground. At least the wooden post insulators donít break unlike the metal t-post insulators, and the metal post ones are much more expensive.

Today is a beautiful spring day, I am doing the egg selling thing as usual on Thursday, lots of people around today.

It was a very frosty start today and there is a wind, but at least the sun is shining brightly. I will be in a meeting for a few hours today, so probably no outside work for me today.

After chores I had to run over and get my past due truck registered, and go to the bank, stopped on the way home to pickup calf supplies, hay, grain and milk replacer and found out they needed two cows bred. When I finished all that it was raining, so no fencing today, hate getting soaked in this kind of weather!

It looks like we are going to get rain here, or at least a shower. Today started out sunny, but there has been a brief shower now. I did manage to get the one outside thing I needed to do today done before it was totally clouded in.

More sun today! I managed to plant a few different kinds of squash in flats to get a head start on the growing season. My porch gets bright morning sun, and The plays will be semi-protect ed there in case of frost.

Sunshine here today too, going to work on fences again. I need to get the blueberries and raspberries trimmed, seems like fences always come first!

emoticon The sun is shining here, and I have managed to trim the dead branches out of my blueberry bushes.

I have had so many problems with my legs recently ( sciatica ?) that I am going slow trying to break into doing outdoor chores gradually so that I can keep my legs from complaining too much.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Good morning Maine friends. I blinked and it was May. I love this time of year. It always feels like a time for rebirth, starting over. I am hoping that this year will bring closure to a few family challenges. Weíve seen the completion of Momís estate, so weíre off to a good start. I have had some medical challenges over the winter (beyond my knee which should probably be replaced). Nothing life critical but definitely annoying. I think thatís under control now. Time to for good things to bloom!

ORTATK- your May day memories brought to mind some of the activities from my childhood. We always celebrated May Day at school. Somehow, little basket with treats always appeared at our classroom door.

Looking forward to some warmer days!
Have a great week all.

Barb, your neighbor is so lucky to have you helping. I Think helping others is a small community part of life in Maine that fortunately still exsists.

It is cloudy here, no rain yet but it looks like there will be some during the day. I went over to my neighbors and dug parsnips yesterday, got two rows done then the rain started. He will be home from his wonderings late today or tomorrow. I roasted some last night and they were excellent! He will be surprised to see 4 pails of parsnips all ready to use. He has to use O2 now and has a hard time with some physical activities, so I cleaned up the garden while I was there, making two piles of cornstalks, and other plant parts.

I have a meeting to attend today. It really would be nice to drive there in sunshine, but it looks like rain jnstead.

I have a lot of outside work to do, but I need to have The ground drier to do it. At least the weather predictions for next week are sounding a little bit better.

Raining here too, started about 4 pm. I ended up going over to my absent neighbors and digging parsnips for him, took a while and then I got wet!

It is raining here. I would very much like to see the sun for more than a short time, and would welcome warm temperatures. I have been out of firewood for some time and been using the oil furnace, but it just isn't the same kind of heat.

Yesterday was such a beautiful warm sunny day that today is a let down, cloudy and chilly. Warm sunny days always bring lots of egg customers, I sold 45 doz eggs.

I am going to try to get the wires picked up on the upper two pastures today, I may have to run up and get more insulators, there seem to be a lot of broken ones, that always happens on years with lots of snow. Melting snow can be a powerful force.

I remember that we used to hang May baskets filled with candy at friends home. I Think we did that any time in May, not necessarily in May first.

Good morning,

Just saying hi, as I get ready to leave and go drop the morning paper off to my Dad, then be at work by 7:30 if not sooner.

I need to reset my mind concerning my eating, I have allowed extra treats and picked up some take out items due to my hectic days with visiting and working. I have been telling myself that I deserve it, but unfortunately, my body does not! I am putting on a few pounds, It needs to stop!

Well, I need to run, hope you all have a great day, and accomplish something that brings you joy!

I had never heard about the May Day baskets until I was married to Gordon, he called a school friend and asked her to make a May Day basket for me and she mailed up 3 of them, he hung one filled with candies and a flower on the bedroom door so I would see it when I woke up! He did that every year after that.

May first, one of my favorite childhood days. The week before my mom and sisters and I would make May baskets with tissue paper and such. We would bill them with candy and then hang them on our friends doors. It was such fun. When I taught first grade I would show the class how to make a simple basket to take home.

I had no idea until I was in high school that it was also a world wide workers holiday!

Enjoy your day.

On my way to my new normal.

Hello Spark Maine!

May has arrived, it is time to think amazing things! We have the opportunity to make May amazing!

Amazing means different things to different people. It may mean a loss on the scale or last year's spring clothes are loose! Need to go shopping!

It could mean that you are stronger than you were, or perhaps you can walk father of longer or faster. Maybe you can do more reps in your strength training.

Maybe you have gotten blood sugars under control or lowered your blood pressure with your healthy lifestyle.

You might have been working on living simply, freeing yourself of unnecessary clutter.

Those are just a few things, I am sure you can add to the list as to what would make your May absolutely aMAYzing!

Be sure to share your amazing progress, be it ever so small or huge, it all matters and it all counts toward the end goal! Small steps will still get you there, it might take a bit longer, but you can do it!

Happy May!

Sandy
