ha ha, I was looking for the "like" button! It is! : My workouts for tonight have been completed. I had lots of water today. Didn't juice much, only once this morning, but I did go out tonight to get more veges, so I plan on juicing 3 times tomorrow. Also, I had some of hubby's corn chowder in a bread bowl. Not the greatest in low cals, but will work that off tomorrow! Have a great night!

Good afternoon! Got an early start to the workday today, and was home before noontime. I like those shifts.

How is everyone doing? I am working on a hike. Looks like we are going to walk to Busch Gardens in Florida!! Kitt52 and Belle are ready to go. lol. I haven't even checked to see how far it is yet. You are all more than welcome to join us...after I figure out the hows and whens. I will post a separate thread for it, when I am finished setting it up.

Have a good evening!

Dot, please take care of yourself. You can work on losing weight after you heal up. Healing your body is more important right now. Just eat a healthy diet, and do as your doc says to do about movement, and treatment. Taking care of that is important right now. You can worry about the scales later. And...please don't think because the scale isn't moving, you can't post here without apologizing, ok? You are part of the team. We would rather have you healthy, than skinny. {{HUGS!}}

Kim, Hale has had the games on all weekend. I haven't watched a bit of it, except to see what the score is. lol.

Hello All,

Thank you so much Rel for the thoughts and prayers.

Sorry that I have been MIA for a while. I haven't been in a good mood for a while. I am trying to get rid of the Cellulitis in my left leg. I am still taking antibiotics for it and they seem to be helping. I have to go back and see my foot doctor on Wednesday and he will tell me what else can be done. He already did an Ultra sound on it checking for blood clots. It came out negative, which I was very happy with.

It is just a long time to figure out what caused this to happen in the first place. My diabetes has gone up and that can be a sort of cause for it. It is however showing signs of improvement and hopefully will all be gone when I go see the doctor on Wednesday. That would be very good.

I haven't been doing so good with the weight issue. I haven't lost any for a while now. I am just staying the same. I need to try and do some exercises to help burn my calories. I don't eat a whole lot though.

Congratulations on those that have lost weight. It is a great accomplishment. Keep up the good work.

Hope everyone enjoys their day.

Best wishes to all!

I will keep you all in my Thoughts and Prayers

Good morning, all. Weigh in day for me. Luckly, my bad behavior of the past week isn't showing in the numbers! Back on the Eat to Live wagon today. No birthdays or special occasions to celebrate for a couple of months, so I'm hoping to do a bit better. The six week program went well for me but, truly, I am not a vegetarian by nature so after a few days, the challenge to sticking primarily to dark green vegetables becomes somewhat tedious for me.

Still, when I did the six week challenge, it resulted in a 17-pound weight loss and I never felt hungry. I have to admit, though I've lately added a lot more animal protein back to my diet, I'm also eating a lot more vegetables, so it started a good habit. Now, back on board with the eating program and with luck, I'll start seeing the weight start to drop off again.

Good morning! It is cold! I hope the sun rises soon and warms the air a bit.

Dot, I am thinking of you this morning, hoping you are ok, and warm.

I hope you have a good day. Today, I pull out the computer desk and paint the wall behind it. That is the last piece to do!! YAY!!! And today, is a no soda day for me. I am having a coffee right now. I never have a coffee in the morning. I tend to wait till after work so I can enjoy it. My day is going to be all messed up! lol.

Good morning! The pellet stove is running, it is nice and warm in here, but it looks really cold outside! The sun is making the sky a peach color today. It is really pretty. The limbs of the tree in back yard are still moving at a good clip, but the house isn't shaking in the wind like it did last night. So the wind speed has dropped. I feel bad for those who have to work outside. I had to go get a bag of pellets last night out in the garage, and I put my ski pants on, as well as 2 coats. Yes, I am a wimp.

Have a good day!

If you do not want SP members to "like" your blogs, and send them to Facebook, go to your SP page, click the edit button, and at the top, where you change the colors of you page, uncheck the box that allows the "like" bar to not be used. I forget the wording, but you will see it when you get there. I live 2 lives...here and FB. My blogs do not go there. When I saw this feature, I did have that thought that I will not be blogging again, till I went to the message boards and found how to disable it. Thought you may want to know too.

Glad I inspire painting projects. lol. Betty, if he likes white, how about a deep rich color, with white accents. White curtains, bedspread.....etc.

I am really liking that blueberry yogurt color in the kitchen! I painted the big wall with a 2 and a half inch brush. I didn't feel like digging out the roller. Then I did the TNT (tighten and tone) challenge for the BLC18, then I shoveled half the driveway, and when I got tuckered out, I finished it with the snow thrower. I just took two Advil and I'm going to bed. Every muscle in my body got a workout today. lol. No painting tomorrow.

Funny, I just posted as a status on my SparkPage about the lack of snow to go snowshoeing. I to bad you didn't live closer!

Have a good night everyone! I work early tomorrow morning, so I'll check in when I get home. Hopefully the roads won't be glare ice. I thought I was going in at 9:45, but it is 7:15. I hope the rain holds off till after I get to town. Or be done before I get up.

editing for a to, too, and two spelling error. (those drive me crazy!) lol.

was really looking forward to going snowshoeing tomorrow but didn't get enough snow to do that. Hopefully, we won't get too much rain tomorrow and another snowstorm will come soon!

I have been thinking about painting my bedroom ( Rel is really inspiring me to paint with all her paint stories!) any suggestions on a bedroom color that a husband who only likes white wall would like?

Haven't really got on the exercise band wagon yet but have been tracking my food everyday and trying to figure out how to stay within my calorie range. any ideas? what do you guys who are successful eat?

Hi All,
I didn't check in for a few day & found that I missed it. Had couple of emotional days but was surprised that I didn't turn to food as much as I used to. That felt empowering! But I'm back on track, focusing on the positive and moving forward! Looking forward to teaching our water aerobcis class tonight at the Y!
I couldn't believe how quickly the snow came in this morning! One minute I was thinking we'd dodged it again, the next minute I'm brushing snow off the car before I came to work! It's snowing quite a bit in Sanford, but down in Portsmouth it's all rain. I'm fine with that!
Rel - I love hearing about your painting project - the colors you've chosen sound exciting. When we bought our house, we promised that we wouldn't paint anything beige or white. The kitchen is blue, the bedrooms various shades of greens, blues & purples; the studio is tropical with tangerine and aqua, the stairs are purple and the living room is accented with purples and reds. Maybe a little eccentric, but it's lively!
If you're traveling today, be safe! If you're staying home - be warm!

Our future may lie beyond our vision, but it is not beyond our control.

Good morning! Has it started snowing in your area yet? I have a FB friend who lives in Scarborough, and he said it is snowing like crazy there. I just got back from town, and I've seen one snowflake so far.

Today is painting day. I'd like to get it finished today, but I doubt that I will. Need to save some energy for the BLC18 challenge today, and energy to shovel snow. I'm making a beefstew for supper. Yum.

I'll be around off and on today. Have a great morning!

Good morning!

Hale and I were talking about the colors we picked, and the major part of the livingroom is the color of french vanilla ice cream. The other side is a a light mint color. The kitchen is the color of blueberry yogurt. It is light and bright. We went from a dark earthy green to POP!

TBL was awesome last night! I thing Bob has some competition! lol.

Have a good day!

Rel, reading about all the painting you are doing is getting me excited to start painting my rooms, just need to decide on color. my DH wants to keep everything white!!! and I want color. I will have to see if we can find a color to compromise on.
Can't wait for the snow on Thursday. Have been waiting to get my snowshoes on and go for a hike!!

I'd take the snow over the ice!!! Hope you all stay safe. I missed the news so will have to watch the weather channel to see what's going on. It was nice enough that I did work out in the yard this afternoon....now if only my neighbors leaves will stop blowing this way!!!!

Taking a painting break. I went and got a 3rd color, for the kitchen and trim in the livingroom. The trim will be the same color as the walls in the kitchen. It is coming along nicely, but, I can't wait to be done. lol. After this is done, I'm tackling our bedroom.

Mary Anne, I wished I lived close, I'd keep you company in the basement. We could talk away, or not talk at all. We are suppose to get 5-8" up here, after the rain and ice. It won't be pleasant, but what snow we get, is all we will have.

Time to go back I guess, before my brush dries out. Later, gators!

Good afternoon all.

Hi Loretta. Don't think I've "talked" to you before. I'm a misplaced Mainer who now lives in PA. Sounds like a good report from your doctor. Good for you!

Rel, have fun painting! I'm getting ready to either head outside for a little more yard work or down to the basement to work on some more of Jay's things.

Pat, how much snow are they talking about? It was sunny here this morning but the clouds have moved in...bummer.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi - Its been awhile since I last posted. Last year was bad. The ending was good though with a 3lb loss over the holidays. That was a surprise. That has never happened to me before. I usually gain up to 10 lbs over the holidays. I had a good checkup today at the Dr. Seems Im not retaining as much water as I used to. My blood pressure is good. Another plus. Hope this is a preview of good things to come this year. Hugs - Loretta.

Good evening!! I hope you all had a good day! It was very chilly today.

Pat, I just started working out again. It isn't much, but I am just testing out the foot. I haven't done any walking, running or jumping since July, and I need to see what tolerance my foot has with the spurs. I am just using the Wii right now. I did find that Coach Nicole's dvd did bother my heal. I'll put that on the back burner for now. Maybe by going slow, I can build up it's stamina. I hate to have it hurting, since I do stand at work.

Mary Anne, Hale had the news on, and I heard the news report, but I was writing my blog, and I didn't turn around. Maybe that was a smart move. lol. It is hard to believe we have no snow. I feel bad for the businesses that depend on it.

Time to make my rounds. I have tomorrow off, so it will either be a painting day, or a road trip day. I have Thursday off, but it is suppose to storm, so I may wait till Thursday to paint. I hope it gets done by summer. I tend to keep putting it off. lol. But once I start in, I always run out of paint, and need to go get more. Then the procrastination sets in again. It's a vicious cycle. lol.

Have a good night!

Pat, I know they say you're supposed to have a no exercise day but I have always done some for me knees every day and rarely miss a day.

I have the news on and they're talking about Cordova, Alaska getting 18 FEET of snow! Couldn't believe what they were showing.

Have a great night everyone.

REL, do you ever have a no exercise day. I mean the formal stuff i realise you are very busy all day at work. I rarely do and today after along day I woke with an aching back and a cracking headache, very rare for me but once I go downstairs I just keep going. As long as I am watching TV or talking with walking friends I never think about the exercise.
I have still not moved really from my Plateau, most of the time i do not think about it but I have to get to overweight. I have to change something. HUGS, you are great I hope the headache is gone and you are back to your busy self again. HUGS Pat in Augusta. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Good morning! The sky is clear, and the moon is HUGE! There will be a full moon tonight.

Mary Anne, Dori did the newsletter every month for a while, then life got busy for her. They were informative, and she put a lot of work into them.

Thanks Pat. I love co-leading this team. The team rocks! I'd like to do more, but I don't have time, and since I stopped the last hike/walk, it's hard to find the "umph" again to get another one going.

I have a longer than usual workday today. I woke up with the normal aches and pains, and it will make the morning half rough. I try not to take anything for it, but I think this morning, I will.

You all have a great day! So...how did your first week of the year go?

Those were so great. How often did you use to do the news letters?

I have seen Dori on Facebook, just a few days ago. She 'liked' the SP status I sent there about giving another 10 lbs the boot. I see her now and then, but I don't think she stays on there long.

WOW!! Thanks Sandy!! I don't remember that first news letter, because I hadn't joined SP yet, I joined the following month, but that second one brought back a rush of memories! I had a blast doing those hikes, and the cruise was probably the best, where we had access to the webcam on the cruise ship. We were "ON" the QE2 and it was her last voyage. They had a webcam that we had access to, and we saw lots of cool places.

there is Dori's SparkPage. I have not been in touch for quite a while, even though she just lives a few miles from me. We both get busy with life and family. No real excuse . . I know! I am headed out the door to walk the grandson who is bouncing off the walls! Will get back later.

nice to see you!

Sandy, thanks for posting those newsletters. A little bit of nostalgia. I've been wondering what happened to Dori? Is she still around? Is she okay?

PLEASE READ THIS POST SECOND! READ PREVIOUS FIRST!

November 2007 newsletter from Dori:

It is November already. One holiday is past and more are coming. Don't let them deep-six all the hard work you have invested towards a healthy lifestyle.

Hide from the Devil

If you had trick or treaters, you may have enough candy and other such treats in the house to blast the best of dietary habits if you are not careful. Now there is no reason not to enjoy them, although donating Halloween treats to a homeless shelter or a food bank would be enjoyed by less fortunate. But if you want to enjoy the treats, do so mindfully. I recommend

- pull out several ziploc bags
- fill each with some of the goodies
- don't put all in same bag because it may encourage splurges
- keep a treat for each member of the house to enjoy
- put the rest in the freezer

Remember, out of sight, out of mind. Then, PLAN for an indulgence every now and then. When you decide to have it, pull out a piece and savor it SLOWLY and mindfully. That way you are not depriving yourself but you are enjoy that which you do eat.

I did this last Christmas with all the candy we received as gifts. It is so out of mind that we are still enjoying some of the fabulous mints we received from our Canadian friends.

New Members

Maine Connections has had a number of new members join us in October. It is great to see so many Mainers and/or people who have a soft spot in their hearts for Maine decide that they want to work on a healthy lifestyle. We now have 261 members. Welcome to each and every one of them. Some, I know, have become active on the message boards and that's great. I hope the rest will join in soon.

Missing in Action

Alas, over time, some of our members become inactive. I do hope that means that they have their lives under control. It would be great if those of you who are not active posters would drop by to say hello. We love hearing from you.

Meeting in Augusta

There was a great gathering of MC members in August on October 21. There were so many people there that those on one end of the table(s) didn't talk much to those on the other end. A suggestion was made that perhaps another time we could play musical chairs periodically. That would allow us to get to know each other better. Also there were some suggestions of alternative sites, where we might be able to get a separate room for our gathering.

Sandy had it well organized so that we actually accomplished things. She showed a book that she had purchased from SparkPeople. It outlines the fundamentals of living a healthy lifestyle. There are motivational stories. Now the website is more complete but it does allow for reading by the fire/woodstove on a wintery evening.

She also printed off SP's "Fuel for a Healthy Lifestyle." She had told me about the pyramid but I had never found it before. Everything is found at the bottom of SP's Motivation section. It is worthwhile reading if you have not looked at it before.

It would be great if more could join in next time there is a gathering.

AT Hike Continues

Dimata and Kitt are still leading the individuals walking along the AT trail. Remember, all of the "hikers" would love to have others join in, even if only for a mile here or a mile there. It is meant to encourage you to be active and to have fun at the same time. For new members, if you have not looked at this thread, start at the LAST page. As you go forward in time, you will see Rel's excellent commentary of what would be seen on the trail. The MC "team" completed the hike in June and now many are completing the trail individually.

Savings Jar Challenge:

There are several MC members working on the savings jar challenge. The team has saved about $60 so far. Look for that thread to see what the members are doing and why they are saving. It is amazing how a little here and a little there add up. It's kind of like excess calories but in this case it is a good accumulation. Check it out!

Lose to Cruise Challenge

This challenge is getting team members psyched up to participate in a virtual cruise that will begin in January. Sandy and Rel are still working out the details of the cruise itself. If I know Rel, she will have lots of great commentary for the cruise.

Right now, the challenge is to get you ready to go on a cruise. Now we would all love to be svelte and fashionably dressed on a cruise. So there are activities that may help us approach this goal. Check it out. There are some good postings on this thread.

When I was reading through them for this newsletter, there were a couple of discussions that I think are worth summarizing.

One concerned eating too "little" vs too much. Remember SP gives you a range for what your caloric intake should be, based upon your goals and activity level. If your goal required that you consume too few calories, it told you because SP does not recommend going below 1200 calories a day. Now I have heard a rumor that there are teams where the members try to stay below 1000 calories a day but that's not healthy living. In fact, you are at risk of throwing your metabolic rate out of whack. Studies have shown that many overweight people have done just that and thus they have made their bodies even more determined to hang on to every pound you have. SP also recommends mixing up the daily calorie intake such that it is always within the guidelines, sometimes close to the upper level and sometimes close to the lower level. The beauty of SP is that it also gives recommended grams of fats, carbs and proteins that you should consume. Please pay some attention to those as well. Sometimes when you are really hungry, it is because you have not eaten sufficient calories of fats. Remember, all things in moderation.

Moderation is the key work for exercise as well. Now I know that I am a poor onto give advice here because my exercise habits leave a lot to be desired. This is definitely a work in progress for me. The key is that you want to get suffient exercise to build your cardiovascular strength and sufficient strength exercises to build good muscle (burns more calories) and bones (stay away osteoporosis). You should also mix up your intensity. Sometimes make it harder and sometimes not so hard. You do want to get your heart rate up but you do not want your body to get "lazy." When you do the same routine at the same intensity, you may not get the same benefit as you would if you mixed it up. SP has some great articles on how to mix it all up.

Someone also said that she had been told she was not eating enough food. Perhaps she isn't and then this would be a valid concern. I feel you also need to be careful because some may tell you this for misguided reasons. For example, some do not have the benefit of SP's nutritional information. Then the remarks are made based upon not knowing what it takes to eat to promote a healthy lifestyle. Then there are those who may mean well but deep down they are a bit jealous that you are taking control over your life and how you live it. So, I recommend that anytime someone questions how much or how little you are eating, thank them for their concern. Then, if you are not already doing so, track your food carefully for a couple weeks at least. Analyze what you are eating.

Are you eating your fruits and veggies?
Are you within your calorie range?
Are you balanced between fats, carbs and proteins?
Compare your pie with the SP pie.

If you are doing well, then the comments are not valid. If you are not, then you need to re-think what you are doing. Now if you have an eating disorder, you may want professional help. Also don't forget that meds can influence your rate of loss.

If you have become more or less active, you may want to have SP re-calculate your calorie range.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching so it's a good time to begin to think about your strategies for living healthy during the holidays. We all enjoy the good, traditional food and there is no reason you have to avoid your traditions. It is important to do it in moderation. It is also important to plan for the indulgences.

Just for nostalgia: I found a copy of the second newsletter we sent to this team, it was Sent the end of November 2006. I joined SparkPeople in September 2006.
I also found Dori's newsletter for November 2007. I will post that next. How fun to reminisce!

The State of the Spark in ME

Although we have a drop of 134 points in our average per team member, our team continues to grow, and our members remain active, using the SparkPeople site to their advantage, collecting those motivating points! This is shown by our local rank! It is my personal goal to have MAINE be in the top 25 at all times! What do you think; can we do anything to get a few more points each day? Maybe sign up for the emails? Read 3 articles? Post 5 times? Drink our 8 glasses of water and track it! I will start a new topic so people can share what they do to increase their points and activity on SparkPeople!

I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to the new year, and NOT having to make any new resolutions. It feels so great to be ahead of the game instead of dreading the new year! Just think how great we will feel when we are closer to or at goal and can say that! Good Healthy Habits are THE WAY TO GO!

If any of you would like to send me a private message at the end of the month, stating how much you have lost for the month, I would be happy to tally it up and include the total in the news letter. I think that would be encouraging to see how we did as a team! If it would help, I would be happy to send a team SparkMail as a reminder at the end of the month

I would love to have your input in order to make your team one which serves your needs. PLEASE send me a private message with any suggestions which you feel would make our team even more special!

Thanks to all for being a supportive team!

STAY SPARKED . . . . . .AND THANKS TO SPARKPEOPLE and Chris Downie!

Sandy

***If you would prefer not receive these monthly team newsletters, then please let me know. It is my desire to have each and every one of you feel that you are a vital part of the team; yet I have no desire to have anyone feel pressured or intruded upon.***

Hi everyone,

How fun to remember when the Maine team began! Wish I had some of the old newsletters Dori sent out. they were really informative!

I Graduated from Sanford high in 1970. I went to school in sanford for 6 1/2 years, lived on Brompton ST I used to love to hang out with Henri and Henrietta Dumont at their store on 75 High ST. I worked at Hillcrest Manor as it was called then, the nursing home.

I cannot seem to get warm or rested today. I am wrapped in blankets with the wood stove going.

Isaiah is here for two nights, lots of games, reading and snuggling!

Have a great week folks!

Good morning ladies! (are there any gents out there?)
Pat - I totally understand your love of Maine. I moved here 20 years ago (originally from Nebraska) but I can't imagine living anyplace else!
Sandy - just how many years ago were you in Sanford? My partner attended grade school here in the 60's (Edison school - now an apartment complex for seniors!) Our being able to buy an affordable home here made it a good homecoming for her. We love the small town feeling & the ability to walk to just about anything we want to do!
As much as I would love to stay under the covers & keep chatting (brrrr - it's cold out there!) there's much to be done around the house & meals to plan for the week. I'm psyched about my four pound loss since starting & want to keep the momentum going.
Enjoy your Sunday - I'll "see" you tonight to check in!

I love Maine and i love this team.
I and DH came from England on a 2 year contract with Augusta Iron works. We had to jump through hoops of RED TAPE to get here. We had blood work .Physicals, Fingerprints, back ground checks and the whole nine yards to enter this country. Too bad it is not so well protected now as it was then
We stayed and rarely went back just 3 times in 47 years . They all came to Maine and loved the place.
DH and I are dual citizens as are our kids who were all born right here in Augusta General hospital. We all are Americans, and we have been very happy here.
When we go out of state which is rare these days we cant wait to see the sign.

MAINE, THE WAY LIFE SHOULD BE.

Have a great day this is my first day of my third year on Spark and I love being here especially with my Maine team members,. emoticon Pat in Augusta.

Mj, if you go to our team's home page, where you see how many members we have, you will see a link to the State teams leaderboards. Of course, California, Texas and the other bigger states will have more members. But for a state our size, we are doing pretty good.

I wonder how we compare to other states as far as numbers of members.. That would be interesting to know.. The surge in January makes sense. We all want to kick off the year the right way.. Tradition of new year resolutions still holds true... Getting healthy and trim is always a popular one.. A life long struggle for most of us it seems..

We have a healthy growth all year, but we always have a growth spurt in January. All of the State teams do. Hikersan (Sandy) started this team, and I remember when it went from being called Maine Connections with 450 members, to the official Maine State team, and we went to something like 12,000, in a few days time, and after all members on SP got sorted to their state. It was overwhelming, and I don't think any of this team's leaders showed up here till the sorting was finished, except to see how many members we had. lol. But I love how that didn't stop us from moving forward. That was a case of "going with the flow". lol.

I was glad to read that the Maine membership is growing. It seems like Maine is somehow more disconnected from a lot of things... anyone else feel that way?
