My DH , Molly and I took a trip out to the farm to see if they had progressed on the house yet and were looking at the hole in the ground where the house is going to be, when I looked over at the ranger and trailer and saw a pair of brown legs, which I thought were Molly's till she came bounding up to me. It was Matty, whom was full of ticks and scared to death, We tried for an hour to get close to her but she would growl and go further under the truck. I remembered we had a Jack in the box bacon egg and cheese biscuit in the truck so I went and got it and started throwing pieces of it at her. When she wouldn't come out I walked away and went to meet my Brother and sister in laws who had just drove up , and low and behold here she came out from under the trailer and almost belly crawled up to me. After that is was a game of chase with Molly and we ended up taking her home with us. We cleaned the ticks off of her that night , dosed her with frontline, that was on Sat ,, Monday we took her to the vet and had her checked out. At the Moment we are waiting to see if any one answers our adds about a found dog. But if no one claimes her she will stay with us.

Jinx came from the ARL in Des Moines. I was waiting for my daughter while she was at a birthday party and decided to kill time by visiting the pet store. They have an adoption section in the back and have cats, dogs, turtles, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. Needless to say, we went into the cat enclosure and Jinx was in a cat tree at about eye level with me. When I looked at her and started talking to her, she put her paws around my neck, leaned in, and bumped my nose with hers. I was a goner!

Pattie, Zoey is still wearing Jasper's "pink" collar!! That is a very funny story. It was meant to be for him to be in the same place as Sadie was. She was giving her "okay"!!!

Oops! Talk about not checking. As a kid I had a pet duck that we thought was male until "he" started laying eggs. I guess it was a bonus.

Mandie came from the animal shelter. She is a Rat Terrier and she doesn't like being in a cage so she was screaming and carrying on. We saw each other and it was love at first sight. It was good. I was the only one that wanted her because of her screaming. She may have been in her final days.

Miley is a foster dog of sorts, long story.

Olivia came from a rescue. I saw her on petfinder

Hi Puppywhispers!
I had to laugh when I read your story about not checking. Twenty some years ago, we rescued 2 kittens. we named them Sarah and Jasmin. Within a very few months, Sarah was expecting. Big surprise! Jasmin became a Jasper. Needless to say, he got "fixed" pronto and Sarah as soon as was good for her and her one little kit. Pays to check. emoticon

We adopted Jasper in 2011 from the same rescue shelter from which we adopted our previous dog, Sadie, who passed away in 2010. We found Jasper in the same box from which we had adopted Sadie 10 years before. I started crying right in the middle of the room because it meant so much to have found him in that same box. When we lost Sadie, I thought my heart would never recover. The vet misdiagnosed her, which led to her death. It was so hard. So finding Jasper in that same box told me that Sadie thought it was time to love again.

Interestingly enough, the volunteer told us all the pups in that room were females, so we didn't check. We named her Abby and bought her a pink collar, before realizing she was a he...lesson learned, always check. emoticon

I love your story! When Rosie came to us, she was so skidish and at first wasn't sure how to handle her new found freedom. Once she figured out that no one was going to grab her and shove her back into a kennel, she began to run and I do mean run all over the house. She was a little wild woman for the first few weeks. Now, nearly a year later, she leisurely strolls from one place to another. You know how they are. It is amazing how our animals react when they realize they are free of cages and kennels that keep them penned up all the time.
We have a Molly too. She is an Aussie that had her jaw broken when she was a 9 week old little girl. The breeder got her fixed up through a series of very expensive surgeries. She knew no one would want her because she was "damaged" so she kept her. Molly was well cared for as this lady took her job as critter caregiver to heart. She is the one that I bought our Angus from years before. I sent her a letter to tell her of Angi's early passing and she told me about Molly. That's another story. Have a grand day. Glad we are not the only one with a thief in the house. Sounds like your Merlin is too. If it is not nailed down, it is Fauna Jo's toy!

I acquired my pets . the first were Merlin and Marissa in 2012 , both 2 month old brother and sister kittenes, 2 weeks after my cat Rachel Dawn was killed on the road in front of our house. I couldn't sleep ,, I work nights and Rachel used to come in and get on the bed with me , her purring lulled me to sleep and I think It was just knowing she was there, because my DH was at work. so I told him look I can't sleep I need something in the house with me. We went to the Humane Society in the next town , and went looking at Kittens. They had this room with a screened door and some benches, and cat trees in it with about 13 kittens in it. I went in and sat down placing my purse next to me on the bench . Merlin came bounding over and climbed in my purse started digging things out of it. then he played in my lap for a while, when all the sudden he jumped off my lap and went over to this little kitten laying on a blanket and kept pestering her till she got up and chased him over to me. yeah the other kittens were milling around but Merlin kept up pestering me and my purse and making sure Marissa was included in the game.It just seemed like they were the only two in the room. I was paying so much attention to Merlin and Marissa I hadn't noticed that my DH had gone to the front and got one of the girls to start the paper work on them .. We took them home that day.

Molly who was about 6 months old , took us about a week to adopt. But we adopted her from the same place we adopted Merlin and Marissa. She was in a dog run and just sat over in the corner and kept her head down wouldn't make eye contact, we looked at her but moved on to a 2 month old pitbull pup, put an application on it , But Molly just stuck in my head , so i told my husband we should look at her again. so we got them to bring her to a room we could play with her and she hid in the corner, pee'd on the floor, shook violently , for about 15 minutes , then she started to come around , and still something told me she was the one, DH was apprehensive because she was so reclusive. But we ended up adopting her and the minute we got her out of the building she perked up, and did not have to be told twice to get in the car. she jumped right up in the back seat like she had been doing it all her life and so here she is ,

How did I acquire my pets? Let me count the ways......
My 2 dogs came from breeders. 1 I have known for sometime and have come to trust. The other I would never use again, but we love our Stryder B just the same. The 8 kitties that grace our home is an entirely different story.
Here they are in order of appearance:
1. Harley Jean was 1 1/2 weeks old when my daughter found her in the parking lot where she worked, abandoned. We bottle fed her and wiped her little bottom. She is now about 10.
2. Dot Dot was part of a litter we fostered. Someone tossed his mom out a car window in the hopes of ending her preggers life when starving her didn't work. An animal lover found her and brought her to the local Humane Society. The trauma threw her into early labor. We lost 1 of the babes, but mom and all the remaining kits have happier homes. Dot Dot is about 8 now.
3. Miss Maia showed up on our porch one winter day. She was ragged, hungry and had a very odd cry. The vet spade her, doctored her tape worms and said some one must have kicked her in the throat to give her such a raspy cry. She was 2 when she came and is about 8 now too.
4. Red Cat adopted us one hot summer afternoon in 2008. The vet said he was about 2 then. We later learned that he was part of a trio that got tossed to the curb when the lady of the house passed away unexpectedly. He fought non stop and had abscesses on his face. Now he is healthy and happy and has no desire at all to go outside. That's good because all our fur babies are inside kids. Red cat is about 7 now.
5. Rosie was found by my daughter in a kennel at Pet Smart. She was thin and very timid. My daughter's heart melted and Rosie came home. She was about 1 1/2 and had lived much of her life in a kennel. When she first realized she had the run of the house, she RAN every where. She couldn't believe she was free. That was almost a year ago. Rosie is now plump and has learned to walk most of the time.
6,7&8. These 3, Teddy, Fauna Jo and Twitchy are from a litter that came to us last summer at the ripe old age of 2 days. There were 7 to start. One was lost to an infection he was born with. 3 others were lost because their little respiratory systems were under developed. The last 3 came thru with flying colors and several trips to the vet. We had lots of troubles with constipation and they all got mineral oil before every feeding. Teddy developed an abscess that had to be lanced at just 3 weeks old. He also got 2 enemas. He was not a happy baby. Now he is just a big baby. We had so much time and money invested in all 3 that Hubby said they were going nowhere. So they joined our family and are now 11 months old.
That SP friends is how we acquired our pets. Have a great day!

KAYDE53 - I'm so glad Jake has a family that loves him now. How horrible! Why would anybody do that to a defenseless animal?

when I bring the foundlings to the vet's office Ray always says the same thing, "this one hit the doggy lottery!"

Omar goes in tomorrow for one of his puppy shots.

honestly, my dogs rescued ME. There have been many times when I have had a horrible day. That all changes when I open the door and see those happy faces and wagging tails.

I know what you mean about those "free" dogs. We inherited a Boston when a friend passed away. She should have come with a trust fund! And my cocker had 3 ear surgeries, surgery for bladder stones, AND the normal stuff.

other than Omar's eye, these three have been low maintenance (thank you, God!)

Susie, my 15y/o little girl, was from a litter of Jack Russells that the owners just wanted to give away so she was "free". emoticon I think this dog has cost me more in vet bills that any other I have ever owned, but she's worth it!

Jake, my somewhere around 14-15 y/o Jack Russell was my SIL's neighbor's dog. He was abusing him something awful. He used to shoot guns over his head to scare him & he hit him so hard with a 2x4 that he knocked him unconscious & Jake bit off the end of his tongue. He still has the imprint of it on his side. My SIL saw this take place. She begged him to let us have him & for some odd reason, he agreed. (Thank God) He had worms, but not heartworm, fly-bitten ragged ears, skinny, afraid of men with deep loud voices, scared of t-storms, because he had a holey, shack of a dog house that flooded when it stormed. He was chained by a maybe 4-5 ft chain on a collar that was embedded in his neck, we had to cut it off. He barked constantly, & my SIL was about half afraid of him. But I didn't care, I went up to him & picked him up, he quit barking, never was mean & took him home & he's been improving ever since. That was 7 yrs ago this July. The vet thought he might be 10 or 12 then, but I don't think he was that old, because he's still in pretty good shape & that would make him 17 or 19 now & I don't think he's that old.

This are my current ones, my ones over the Rainbow bridge:
Ming- pug, another give-away
Scooby-Doo, a Jack Russell who appeared one day, think someone dumped him was a pup
Tsu-Ling, a shelter pug
Emmy & Otis, two purchased pugs (wouldn't do that again all that money & neither was bred very well, didn't live to a very old age.)
Spanky, a Border Collie, smartest dog I ever owned, used to take Tsu-Ling for walks on a leash, she wasn't crazy about that, but tolerated it, also would pull her in a wagon.

Also have had a half dozen cats or so, but they were outdoor ones except for Kitty, she was a beautiful gold Persian mix with long fluffy fur, a give away again.

growing up, living at 'home', we never had animals although that was always my biggest wish. so when I finally started my own life, I took on two cats. then one got run over, so I took to walking the other on a leash, in a very rural area, you can imagine what that did to my reputation! got a very disturbed cat from a shelter to keep her company, who turned out to be just the most wonderful creature you can imagine; neighbors then passed on their 'extras' to me, so I ended up with three cats. one by one they all got some sort of cancer, which tore me to pieces, but you know how it is... i'm on the next batch of three, and history seems to be repeating itself. i'm just praying georgie stays with me as long as possible, he's an incredible guy himself.
meantime the same patterns are on with guinea pigs... my niece came home with one, after a few days there were suddenly three (she was already pregnant). when my niece left home to go to college, she left the remaining (original) pig with my sister, who hates animals. my birthday present to her was that I relieved her of her duties, and there began my career of patooties, hamlets and pigasuses. hamlet the third was supposed to become father of a new generation, but as he has spent most of his life with one pigasus (about 6 months) or alone (three years) he simply has not learned the facts of life. he got mobbed in the crowd so I took on his 'wife' fay last January. although he takes good care of her, comes running when she starts squealing, as yet he hasn't fulfilled his duties. no babies in sight. but wow does fay have an appetite!

If you had asked me this question a few years ago, I would have gone through the gamut of chickens, goats, lovebirds, dogs, cats and guineapigs.

Now we have Bruno a Lhasa Apso who was given to us by our vet at the time to replace Tramp who had to be put to sleep with acute diabetes.

Ladybird is a Jack Russell who we adopted from the RSPCA.

Maggs is an Australian Terrier who really adopted us. She kept coming to our place everytime there was a storm and in the end we said that we would love to keep her. She is also known as the "million dollar dog" because of the money that has been spent on her since we got her.

Pussass just showed up one day in 2000 and decided he wasn't going anywhere

right now, we have 3 dogs, 2 horses and one cat. all rescues.
the dogs -- shea is a 14 1/2 yr old border collie. we got him when he was 1 1/2 from a border collie rescue. tippy we got from the pound when she was 9 weeks old (my first puppy). she is 1/2 border collie and now 3 1/2 yrs old. buddy we fostered for the spca and fell in love and adopted him. he is 10 to 13 yrs maybe. he's a fat black dog with one eye. all very different from each other.
the cat finnegan we got from the spca.
the horses are rescues--bill is a standardbred, he missed being dog food by a hair. and rocky is a miniature horse that another woman rescued from a bad situation and she gave him to me.
i love knowing my animals are rescues and they have landed in clover here with us.

Gail -- She believed she could, so she did.

My dog passed just before Hurricane Ike. Ike blew down all the fences and there were dogs every where. A month later later dogs not claimed were put up for adoption. When I went to look for a dog, Mutt was everything I didn't want, to young, not house broken, 20 pounds larger then I wanted, never had a collar on much less walked on a leash, but his eyes got me and he tried so hard to please me when I tried working with him.

when our cat of 8 years passed DH said he wanted a calico. There wasn't one in any of the shelters near us. A neighbor said a feral cat had kittens under her house and one was a calico. When the kittens were old enough we trapped the kittens, and took the one we wanted.

Objects in the mirror will get thinner than they now appear

I was on Petfinder.com and there was a dog they said really needed a good home-went to the
shelter and that dog would have nothing to do with me(at that point they decided to give her
more people training & help)but there was a little puppy who really wanted me-it was love and
has been ever since!

DH and I volunteer a couple of mornings/week at a no-kill shelter. One day the manager went to the ASPCA (where she usually gets dogs) and brought back a pit bull mix. I first saw 1 yr old Darby out a window (I clean the kitten room) so went to see her up close even though I knew she was a pit.....all those stereotypes sprang to mind.

Darby was in the dog kennel on the couch with my DH and she jumped down and ran over to greet me. It was love at first sight, but it was several weeks before we 'fostered' her. The shelter was going to rebuild the dog kennel and needed foster families for the dogs. A few weeks later I had DH convinced that it was a good idea to adopt Darby. That was almost 4 years ago.

Oh, shelter personnel told me after we'd adopted Darby, that when we took her to 'foster' that they'd taken her name and picture down from the available-to-be-adopted board. emoticon

I will start with the kitties. CoffeeKitty is about 18 years old and first my second daughter adopted her as a stray. Then when she moved out to rent her own place, I inherited her. Cloud was put out of her house when her owner had to go to a nursing home and the real estate agent put the kitties out. I adopted her with her mother, Mist, who has since passed on with cancer. I had gone to see the house and the kitties came running up. When I found out the story behind them, I got permission to adopt them. Shadow showed up one day under the house I used to own and I discovered she also had kittens after a while. I had seen Shadow and her brother for a while and was leaving out food for them, but the brother disappeared after a while. I managed to catch all the kitties with TUNA and took them in. I got Shadow to the vet and at an appropriate age, the kittens also. My oldest daughter managed to get good owners for all the kittens. I suspect someone dropped off Shadow and her brother in my neighborhood. The vet said she was very young to have kittens and estimated her age at the time as 6 months. Next came Stratus, who appeared in my neighborhood also. I'm pretty sure he was also dropped off in my neighborhood. Since he would rub up against me, I knew he wasn't afraid of humans. However, once I took him in, I discovered he was very afraid of children, since he would be terrified when my grandchildren came for a visit. (He has since become more confident with children.) I suspect his original owners had a child that they did not require to be gentle with kitties and Stratus undoubtedly whacked the child. Thus the dropping off.

As for the dogs, I bought Cielito after a previous Chihuahua passed away from seizures after 3 days of having them (even with medication). Cielito supposedly is pure Chihuahua, but I suspect some Australian red heeler is mixed in. Patience is a rescue Yorkie that I got through Petfinders.com after my previous Yorkie passed away. Caspian is a dog that was abandoned as a puppy in a field where my oldest son was assisting in some scientific studies. My son named him and then got really attached to him. Unfortunately, my son was unable to have him with him due to traveling for jobs. I took care of him for a while, and then my youngest son had him for a while when I first moved in where I am now. Then shortly before last Christmas, my daughter with whom I live, asked me if I thought I could care for him here. I said yes. So for Christmas, Caspian came back to live with me and got some good visits with Jason when Jason was here.

Maintaining.

15 dogs from kill shelters, 12 cats from kill shelters, 8 bunnies from no-kill shelters, 1 horse rescued from well-meaning but ignorant owner who got hurt. Some of the dogs and cats have passed on by now.
Total number of dogs rescued from kill shelters or irresponsible owners and placed in good homes over 100 over the last couple of years, also rescued about 30 cats and a few bunnies.
We also own about 30 ducks, some bought from breeder and most bred here (we keep them for eggs on pasture), and we own three whippets (a breed that is virtually never in rescue) that come from a racing-line breeder.

PolyDactyl had been at the shelter for 5 months when we adopted her. Two weeks later, we adopted Ms Molly at the age of 8 after her family turned her in. She was a lovely cat that lived until almost the age of 19. Two weeks after she passed, I got an email from a rescue group that a 13 year old had been turned in to a shelter since her family didn't want a pet any more. I still have PolyDactyl who is about 12 and now Daisy who is 13 so I call them The Golden Girls!! I would think twice about adopting an older pet. Daisy and I are still learning about each other and she has done well for never being around another pet.

We've always had kitties that have lived to be 18 or 19 and were rescues but we also raised gerbils, dwarf hamsters and fish (at one time we had 3 tanks).

My boss/friend had three lhasa apso dogs and she'd bring them to work now and again before taking them to the groomer. I met them one day on such a visit and just fell for the cute, small, funny little dogs. She gave me the name of her breeder, and I started talking lhasas up to Bill. We'd married in June, so by December he was convinced we should go to the breeder to 'look around'. OhBoy!
The breeder told us if we were interested in a puppy (she had SO many) to cradle it in our arms like a baby - if the pup was still and nicely behaved, it indicated a calm good dog. If it was squirmy and wriggle, it indicated an ornery dog. I picked Millie because she was a little ball of black and gray fluff, Bill picked Maggie because she was a red and white parti girl.
Millie gazed lovingly up into my eyes as I held her in my arms - Maggie fought holy-h*ll at being on her back in Bill's arms LOL They lived up to the breeder's predication.
They're now 4 1/2 years old.

Bubbie was next, 3 1/2 years later. We had been thinking about adding another dog to the family but wanted to adopt from the Humane Society. We were checking the website and saw a one-eyed french bulldog available. We went to the shelter to meet him, but he had already been adopted. We wandered around the shelter and noticed a little white grubby matted ball of lhasa boy and asked to meet him. He was interested in us although still unsure of himself. I was smitten, so we brought the girls in to meet him to see how they'd react. Maggie, ever-feisty, did a little barking and grumbling and Millie didn't even seem to notice him.
He came home with us that day! He's now 2 1/2 years old.

Bub was also was inspired me to start volunteering at the very same Humane Society. That and I thought it would help me get a big dog fix and not want to adopt more. Ha!

Ben came from the Humane Society, as Bill and I had both walked him as volunteers and noticed what a nice mellow boy he was, how affectionate and sweet. We knew the three lhasas had become reactive to other dogs so we walked their little paws off to wear them out before taking them to meet Ben. This time Bub was uncertain about Ben, but Maggie and Millie seemed alright.
Ben came home that day and now he and Bub are best buddies and brothers. Ben's now 7 1/2 years old.

Pudgy. That little dickens came from Texas. My sister has two teacup chihuahuas and they had a litter. As soon as we saw the pups we said we'd take the only boy! We never thought it would actually happen, but in May my sister, niece, and nephew flew up from Texas and brought out lil firecracker to us. Again with slow and careful get-to-know-you interactions, he's now the best little brother and king of the pack!
Pudgy is now nearly 5 mos old.

Then there are the birds LOL
Bob and Charlie are the ringneck doves, and they caught my attention one day as I was walking through the Humane Society to sign in for dog walking. Yea, they came home with a third dove that escaped my hold and flew off.

Sweet and Tart are the lovebirds, also from the Humane Society. Bill fell for them while they were under medical care, and as soon as Sweet passed her mal-formed egg, they were able to be adopted. He brought them home one day with a 'look what I got' kind of excitement.

We have since asked the Humane Society to put us on the 'Do Not Adopt To' list LOL at least until we win the lottery and move to our own multi-acre spread with room for more furkids.

I went to animal care services.

Meesha was the only pup that was extremely excited to see me, I knew she was "the one".

My boyfriend was not to thrilled about my pick, my mom said she was ugly, they both love her now.

Now she is very pretty, it just takes love! (And some medication!)

A friend here on SP and a member of this team, rescues dogs and cats in North Georgia near where we have our cabin. She knew I had lost my precious Honeybear to cancer but she knew I would want another dog eventually even though my DH said he didn't! She rescued then named Prissy, from a man who was really neglecting her and didn't want her. She took her in, got her fleas under control and her skin back to being beautiful and started emailing me pictures. Of course I was "smitten" immediately. When we went to our cabin, one day we went to her house and, of course, the rest is history as they say!! My DH loves her as much as I do!!! Her name is Zoey now as she is a Jack Russell and didn't look like a Prissy!!!!!

I lost my beloved Smokey-Boy less than 6 months earlier and swore never again (I say that every time). It was so quiet in the house I couldn't bear it! (Smokey was a big "talker"). I started going to a local cat shelter (CatDepot) "just to visit" and have some "cat" time. Of course, I fell in love with poor Louie who was already sick in the shelter infirmary. I was afraid no one else would take a 3 year old sick cat - so I committed to take him once the vet released him. Lily (named Stella at the time) got chosen purely to keep Louie company ;) I'd vowed never again to have just 1 animal as I work full time and just wanted him to have someone else there. He was left at the shelter with a house mate and someone adopted just her and left Louie behind - people are just so cruel! That was 2 years ago, May 26, 2011.

We got Tinkerbell when she was 7 weeks old. I wanted a small dog since our bigger one was sick and hubby was planning to retire soon( figured a smaller one would travel better). We looked all over at pounds etc and ended up getting her from a family farm. When I wanted another rat terrier i looked on petfinder. Pixie was there and would be at an adoption fair in the same neighborhood our daughter lives in on the same weekend we were going to be visiting her. I figured it was meant to be. I got approved to take her and we went to look and she became the newest member of our family.Pam

Obie was the first one - we had to have my sweet cocker spaniel put to sleep (he was 16). DH knew I wanted another dog, but we were looking for the right one. We signed up with Boston rescue and Boykin Spaniel rescue. The only lead we got from either of those was a Boykin, but she was escape artist. She needed at least a 6' fence.
several people told us about breeders with pups, but we weren't interested. DH's family in Louisville had a friend who'd bought a Golden puppy for Christmas and didn't realize he'd be a BIG dog. So he was 'free to a good home'. We drove from Atlanta to Louisville and picked him up (he was 4 mos old).

Jack was the second - we knew we needed a playmate for Obie. We just could not keep up with his energy! We heard about a Lab mix who was abandoned at a school in the next county. We took Obie over to meet him. They were best buddies immediately. DH said, "put him in the truck!" Obie was about 18 mos then and the vet estimated Jack to be just under a year old.

Omar was unplanned. I went to the park for a run on my birthday and found him all alone under one of the exercise stations. His right eye was popped out. Not a soul in sight. He had a collar but no tags. I called the vet to see if he had any available appts. After we got Omar taken care of, I went back to the park and put signs up. I talked to every person I saw walking a dog. Nobody claimed him, so he's OURS! The vet says he's about 7 or 8 months old.
