Hi Team! I've been AWOL with the holiday craziness and all. Val, I have a Fitbit and I LOVE it!! Not only did it motivate me, I really helped me to see how little I was moving during the day. I just assumed I was close to - if not exceeding 10,000 steps per day - only to find I was very short of that goal. When I got the Fitbit and started really reaching for the 10,000 steps, I reached my goal weight. To answer your question, yes, new 'stuff' does help to motivate me but the Fitbit held me accountable. If I happen to be having a day where I'm sitting more than I'd like, sometimes I march in place in the bathroom to add to the step count (probably looks ridiculous but I don't care).
