When I get down on myself re the stuff I haven't done since retiring (making more of a dent in boxes filled with clutter & starting back doing art), I'm trying to focus instead on what I have accomplished.

I got another month of 2,000 fitness minutes. Never got that much when was working. My bedroom is looking relaxing. Tomorrow, I'm going to take some art work to get framed. I'll put it up on a bedroom wall to inspire me. Almost done with a bookmark display. Organized all the office type displays and computer stuff. Did the hall "junk" closet.

Taking a trip in April. When I return want to focus on two days a week of calorie counting & journaling. Been reading this book re low carb for two days as a diet. Think it might work as two days of calorie counting. Also, I want to make it to 2,500 fitness minutes.

emoticon , Everyone,
I'm seeing another common thread here, too which is either just not working or recently retired (and not working). I'm thinking of goals to make so I keep more busy. I feel better, worry less, and don't eat as much when I'm busy so I think it's a good strategy.
Let's see how it goes!

Checking in here! I've been so naughty for the last few months about checking in here, but somehow managed to lose 8 lbs during that time!

I am still not working, and I am finding myself fighting the boredom eating demons more and more! Arrgg!!

Hi there Lillybelle. Glad you managed to get a decent rest. That is so important. Being tired just drags you down so badly. I hope you manage to get your BP under control. That is a scary one. And it is definitely difficult to accept that the meds we take to help us, counteract that very aim by putting on weight. Welcome to the anti-sugar club! Its a beast, for sure. It helps that we can "gang up" on it here on the thread. We can beat it! emoticon

Eileen, good luck with your doctor visit. I hope your exercise did the trick and you are able to stay off medication.

Hi there Chippee!

In two weeks, I'm having a regular Doctor visit. She was talking about possibly starting Blood Pressure meds. When I saw her last, thought I was going to be so good about diet. I haven't. Been great with exercise. So don't want to go there with meds but realize the danger with high blood pressure.

Lilybelle8 - good luck with your doctor.
Interesting re Calms Forte. Thanks for sharing.

Your conversations about sugar are most interesting! After reading your posts, I've finally admitted to myself that I've been on a self-defeating, sugar-seeking binge for the past couple of weeks. One of you used the word 'insidious' and that pretty much sums up how I feel about it, too. Sugar - the sneaky little bugger!!

My blood pressure is dancing all over the place, so I've got to monkeys on my back that I need to conquer - before they conquer me. I know that SparkPeople offers a lot of tools, but I usually prefer the old-fashioned pen/paper method of tracking things, so have devised a form that tracks a lot of things and hopefully when I present it to the Doc next month he will agree with me that the med I'm on now for High Blood Pressure was not designed with me in mind and we can find something that works better for me.

Also, my sleep habits are atrocious - and one of my SparkFriends suggested a product from the Health Food Store called Calmes Forte - took just two tabs last night and had a full 5-hours of uninterrupted sleep. It was wonderful - and I'm looking forward to going to bed tonight expecting more sleep!

So I didn't meet any of my goals for this month - but the 4-pound gain is probably due to the BP med, as that is one of the possible side effects. Although I think the label should not say "possible weight gain" it should definitely say 'probably weight gain'!! However, even with that setback, I'm looking forward to Spring - then Summer! And of course, more sleep!

Do it, NOW!

Fortunately, a few days without sugar usually beats the cravings for me too. It takes so little to start them up again, though. A few 'treats' or even just not paying attention closely and pretty soon I find that I'm back in trouble again. So insidious. On the plus side, though, I am recognizing problem eating behaviours much more quickly now and doing what it takes to break the trend before it gets too far. Its sure a never ending process though.

Have a great day ladies...

I have low blood sugar. Most of the time, my diet is ok. I definitely eat differently than if I didn't have that issue. If my eating habits get bad, I get sugar cravings. I find if I can stick out four days without sugar the cravings will go away as well as other side affects of low blood sugar.

Eileen your 'plus' side sounds pretty good to me! You are busy and involved - got to be good. I know what you mean by getting involved in computer stuff though. I'm taking an online course so spend a lot more time sitting than I meant to in retirement (for me it was a year last August) but I have a regular exercise schedule now that I never had before. I'm not totally balanced yet but I'm doing better. I'm sure you will work it out for YOU.

Chippee -- down two pound -- good for you! Its always nice when the extra calories are just visiting and don't stay around.

Hi Lilybelle!

Day one, no sugar and I feel great! Take care all, emoticon

Never weighed myself yesterday (I'm one who needs to get on the scale pretty much everyday) and was happy to see 2 pounds down. I guess the extra food and 2 martinis ( emoticon ) was just temporary. Thank goodness!

Good luck & emoticon

Since retiring last August, I've increased my exercise minutes but have done a lot of drifting re goals. I've been enjoying too much Facebook time & Facebook games. Have gotten off track from where I thought I would be when I first retired. Had plans of clearing out clutter & getting back to art.

On plus side, I have organized several areas of my house. I really like my bedroom now. Using the bedroom several nights a week to do some meditation.

At moment, my focus is on hiking trip planned in April. We're also going to see our son & family (two grandkids) before & go to Atlanta aquarium after. A lot of my hikes now include a full backpack.

I've also taken on a volunteer "job" for my local Florida Trail chapter. I'm the Activities Chairperson. The job had gotten behind so doing a lot of catch up. This involves mostly computer work with getting list of activities planned to person who does newsletter, putting events on Meetup.com, sending info to newspaper, and putting on Florida Trail Association calendar. At some point, there will be some other duties. I have led activities for this group but this is much more time consuming.

I have been also "giving back" but doing trail maintenance work most Wednesday's.

So not all bad BUT I do need to do less computer playing and more other things include journaling food.

Rambling a bit. I'm up early as it's a work hike (trail maintenance) day. I'm not a morning person.

Have a great day all!.

The special events can throw throw you off, for sure, but the important thing is not to let them keep you off and you are on the right track with that Chippee. I'm glad for this group too Eileen. We help each other.
As for me, I've been getting into too many treats lately so I've committed myself to cutting sugar out of my eating plan for the rest of the month -- and then re-evaluate before allowing anything more. Back to basic food for a couple of weeks, at least. Wish me luck - and success!

I have never played tennis but always thought it looked like fun. Probably badminton is the closest I ever got. I always enjoyed volleyball too.
Arthritis really can be tough to deal with but I hope you enjoy the tennis, Chippee. Got to be good exercise with lots of movement and stretching too.
Now hiking, I have done and enjoyed very much. I wouldn't mind picking up that activity again. Enjoy your trip, Eileen.
Lilybelle - how is the hairdo holding up? Enya's music is wonderful - Enjoy!

We have tennis courts at our clubhouse so I definitely have the opportunity. And my daughter is looking forward to it. My problem is my arthritis in my arms/wrists and ankles, feet. But usually, moving is just what you need to get more limber and feel less pain. And you don't feel like you're exercising so much with tennis, you just feel like you're playing and having fun!

As much fun as the WII is, it doesn't take the place of outdoor activity. Hope you can get to do the tennis.

I've done very little with Wii. My daughter has a few, I think, so I'll ask her and get back to you on that. I'm hoping I can play tennis this summer. It's been 2 years, but courts are right close, so here's hoping!

Years ago, I wore Birkenstocks but my feet changed and they were no longer comfortable.
When I worked, I loved SAS shoes because of the wonder heel cushioning.
I have discovered flip flops that correct for pronation - Orthoheel. though they may have changed the name to Vionic - link below (hope it works).
I do have a pair of New Balance that also corrects for pronation.

Which WII Zumba did you get?
Have you ever done WII Just Dance series? They're also a favorite of mine.
Lately haven't done as much WII but will get back to them. Doing a lot of conditioning for major hiking trip in April.

Wow! The Zumba I did is on Wii. My daughter just bought it. And I did it barefoot, too! I like to exercise barefoot at home, it's more comfortable.
I, too, have a problem with pronating and have been doing some exercises trying to strengthen my foot and arch. I have Major problems with my feet. I recently was able to buy shoes which is an real issue for me as I wear an extra wide and have since I was in my teens. I got SAS which are expensive, but I got 2 pairs of pumps and a real comfy slip on which looks like orthopedic shoes, but still nice looking leather.
Flip flops KILL my feet, make it so much worse, so I only wear them when I go to the pool. Birkenstocks are wonderful if you haven't tried them. The chiropractor said they're the closest thing to orthotics since they mold to your feet and have arch support.
People just take their feet for granted I think! Hopefully we'll both be able to get our feet in better shape.

Zumba is more fun than exercise -- which is what you want in a physical activity. Enjoy!

I have done Zumba on my WII unit. If I do it at home, I can be barefoot. Have thought about a class; however, foot & shoe issues have made me wait at the moment. I over pronate and wore my Crocs & other flip-flops too much after I retired in August. Now I'm back to being more careful about what I put on my feet.

Without warning, the blue sky has turned to a nasty grey, and the wind is howling! That is kind of rude, Mother Nature!!

But, I do have a new hair-do that is just darling. Doesn't look so good on me, but it is a darling hair-do anyway. Also today I tried on a skirt that was the size I wore when I started SparkPeople - and even though I haven't lost that many pounds, the skirt was waaayyyy too big so I know things have shifted around some. But it felt great to have that skirt almost fall off my hips! Imagine how great it will feel when I meet my goal of losing 3 pounds by the end of March, and still have my darling hair-do!!! Living the American Dream!!!

ooh, Enya; her music is so pretty. We have a few of her cd's. I hear her whenever I'm in my husband's car as that's where they are!
We had a couple of nice warm days after a brutal winter. Temps dropped drastically overnight, but we were spared the snow and only got ice. School has a two hour delay. High will be in twenties today. Unfortunately, the snow had finally melted in our front yard and the somewhat green grass (from being insulated under the snow) will probably turn brown now. On the bright side, temps will begin to moderate again tomorrow.
I ate a couple of cookies last night so I'm a bit nervous to get on the scale. Gotta make it a better day today.

Hooray - a big. blue, sky full of SUNSHINE today. Have probably turned the corner toward Spring - no more snow is in the forecast. It will be awhile before any little Spring Flowers get the message and poke their heads out, but a flock of 'new' birds seems to be trying to set up housekeeping in one of my big pine trees - the signs of spring are all encouraging.

Weight-wise, I have nothing to report except that I haven't gained anything for 3 or 4 days. Seems like I am always going one way or the other on the scale, so having it stay the same is a good sign for me.

Yesterday I sent to a Hastings Music Shop, looking for a CD of Hawaiian music because I have a friend going there in a few weeks for the very first time and I wanted to help him prepare for a grand experience. Well, I hit the jackpot! Found one Hawaiian CD, but also found several Enya CD's - for only $1.99. Right now, I'm listening to "How Can I Keep From Singing" on the Shepherd Moons CD. Blue Sky AND Enya? How could I be so lucky?

I like the elliptical also. Exercise is a great habit to acquire and I am working at it. My day yesterday was not good - I really have to stay out of stores! - but today I am back to routine and really focusing on staying on track. Eileen, keep up the struggle and be kind to yourself. One day and one step at at time...

Thanks for the post!
I struggle with perfectionism but I do know, it is easier for me to do things with I feel good about myself. Been trying to replace negative self-talk with positive, nurturing, and gentle internal dialog.

I am so glad this team is here for us. emoticon emoticon

Thanks, AJINBC, Lily, and Eileen. Yep, being there for each other is going to help, and Aji, good for you, the scale isn't the only thing. ( I have to remind myself of that!) We're making strides, one step at a time, and that will work. I actually had a pretty good day yesterday, so, just have to string more and more of those together.
I looked back at when I first started years ago, and I eased into it then. Must remember to focus on all the positives and victories and not beat myself up about the slip ups.
Here's to our SP Class! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I guess we all need to remember that a journey of 1,000 miles starts with one step. Unsure if I have quote correct.

Hey Chippee --- I sure hear you about the self-sabotage thing. I think you have the answer, though, in getting back to the program. Like you, this time I really believe I will make it work. Although my ticker looks bad, its actually encouraging to me because I have already met my first goal and am heading off on the next one. I'm getting a slow start - haven't lost anything in three weeks - but I will. I KNOW it. And you will too. Because we WILL keep at it.

If you guys are talking about the board because of me, I did the one that's on the start page. They have photos you can incorporate. You type in your own goals. If I had to do a collage, who knows when that would be done!
I'm having a difficult time. I'll do very well, not see anything on the scale, get discouraged and then sabotage my efforts with some poor food choices. I keep getting back in the saddle, though, so am hoping that it's gonna "take" soon. I actually believe in my heart that I am going to succeed which may be a good part of the battle.

I will admit I've only done a board thing once in the 90's; however, I do understand why they work. It uses the power of suggestion--just like the ads do--only to reinforce what you already want to do. It can work on your subconscious as well as function as a reminder.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've never done the 'vision board' thing but that's likely because I'm not very good with projects like that. I start them but don't finish! emoticon Sounds like it might be a good idea though and, hey, trying new things to keep us on track can only be a positive. Let us know how it goes.

Today I have a wild idea that making a 'vision board' might help me stay focused. I'm wondering if any of you have made a similar motivation tool? It seems that when I get 'down and out' about the whole fitness thing, eating and exercising, that the 'blahs' are right around the corner, waiting to attack what's left of my good nature and good intentions. Haven't decided whether to make a collage or a 3-ring binder? Maybe both??

Water, fiber, exercise, and positive thoughts are on my agenda today! How about you guys??

Do it, NOW!

I feel inspired by all of you so, after reviewing my goal board, I'm going to exercise and drink some water!

I have been trying to make 2,000 fitness minutes every month. This month I have more incentive. My husband & I are getting ready for a major hiking weekend at the end of April. It's major for us in that it will involve elevation & backpacks. It's in Georgia. We'll hike five miles in to a inn. Will stay there two nights. The next day, along with friends, will hike to the start of the Appalachian trail. I believe round trip it will be over 8 miles. The following day, we'll hike home. The mileage is no problem BUT I have been hiking in flat areas for years.

We do have a local area that has small hills created out of tailings from phosphate mining. The total acreage of the former mine is huge. The mining also created scores of lakes. The mining has been over forever. The birds love the lakes (as do the alligators). A lot of people fish the lakes in boats or on the shore. I love kayking one section of them (but not in alligator mating season).

Our local chapter of the Florida Trail Association has created miles of hiking trails there. I have even helped to build some of them. We maintain them with a little help from the state management that runs the part of the area that has our trails. Since retiring, I've put in many Wednesday mornings with trail maintenance there. There are also horse trails and other recreational opportunities in the former mine area.

My husband & I have been doing a lot of hiking on the most strenuous trails in the complex; sometimes with others from the Florida Trail group. Yesterday, we hiked with a full backpack on. Hope to get out again on Friday.

Tomorrow, going kayaking with friends I haven't seen in years. Got a new kayak recently so that is another physical activity I'm trying to do more of.

My March goal is to drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. I am not very consistent at that and, as you note too Lilybelle, consistency is a tough one but very important.

We had snow overnight as well but the sun is bright and really, its March!, spring HAS to be coming! Guess I'll miss all that shovelling exercise. NOT!

Good luck, everyone, with your March goals.

March certainly rolled around quickly - but it might as well be December here in Idaho, because we have new snow this morning. Well, looking on the bright side, it might be our last chance to make a snowman this season!

Do you have goals for March that you would like to share with us? Myself? I have a goal of "move it somewhere, somehow, every day' - because consistency seems to be one of those qualities that doesn't come easy for me. I figure if I can conquer gravity and 'move it' more, it can't hurt??

Also this month of March will surely be more 'Springy" than "Wintery" so I'm setting myself a challenge to lose 5 pounds this month. That is totally do-able!! And, "if it is to be, it is up to me"! But as I look outside at the new snow, I confess that my moving today might be indoors - but like my March Mantra reminds me, anytime - anywhere is good enough!

Hope all of you (us) have a great week!! ...Lily
