My dear boss gave me a Fitbit for my tenth anniversary as his assistant in Mid-October, and I LOVE it. I've been tracking my fitness on Sparkpeople (this go-round) since Mid-August, and I have to admit the 'all day activity' entry bothers me because it messes with my calorie calculations. What I do to solve it is track my various exercise activities on Spark the way I always have, and then every day I go to the previous day and simply delete the 'all day activity' entry that Fitbit jams on there. It helps keep me saner and gives me a more accurate picture of the work I'm doing to burn calories vs. the regular BMR entries. FWIW.

Thanks for explaining about the way it calculates activity levels, I didn't know that. According to FB I had an average of 265 steps per 5 minutes on my last walk which certainly explains why it's off. I suspect that it's because I'm using the app on my phone rather than a device. Hopefully that'll get more accurate when I get a Surge, and hopefully the trackers with HR available will use that when calculating activity levels, since it's more accurate. Something fo rme to check on.

The second entry is called "FitBit Entry". I calculated the difference between the calories burned on SP and FB for Sunday, Monday, and Yesterday, which should in theory be consistent since that number represents whatever FB thinks my BMR is. But it's not, it's different each day. FB is also saying that on Monday I had the fewest steps out of those 3 days, yet the most calories burned, which makes no sense when the only thing it can do to guess how many calories I've burned is to count steps.

All this is making me very impatient for a Surge, which I hope will be far more accurate!

The only entry that FB sends to SP is the ALL DAY ACTIVITY entry. Any other entry has to be made manually on your SP Fitness Page.
It is odd that you are receiving 2 entries. What is the title of the second entry?

With regards to activity levels. Yes, FB will log a 60 minute walk but you have to have sustained activity of 5 minutes or more at either FAIRLY ACTIVE or VERY ACTIVE minutes in order to receive credit for those sustained sessions. It has nothing to do with heart rate rather FB bases its calculations on the number of steps you are taking during a walk. For example if I take 500 or more steps within a five minute period I am given credit for 5 FAIRLY ACTIVE minutes. If I take only 400 steps then I do not receive credit for FAIRLY ACTIVE rather I receive credit for 5 MODERATELY ACTIVE minutes (and these minutes are not synced to the SP site).

Yes, I understand what it does.

What I don't understand is why a day with no exercise gets 2 exercise entries on SP and a day with 1 exercise gets 1 entry. Or, why I tell FB that I've done a 60 minute walk, and it logs my fitness minutes as 15.

I would expect to either see 1 entry each day that includes all calories burned, or 1 entry per exercise and 1 for "all-day activity".

I see what you're saying about the activity levels, BUT if I've told FB that I'm exercising now and it logs a 60 minute walk, then that should come across as 60 minutes. Especially since I'm using the app on my phone, not a device that can monitor my HR and have any real idea of how active I'm being.

What I'm seeing doesn't make sense, and has nothing to do with my BMR.

Bear in mind that your FB is an activity tracker. It will track ALL of your activities for the day. We burn calories all day long so your FB will keep track of all of your burned calories (even while sleeping, sitting down, or standing still) for the day. What SP syncs from your FB page is the MODERATELY ACTIVE and VERY ACTIVE minutes. These would be activities where you are burning more calories than you would normally burn just breathing, i.e., not doing anything. I would suggest that you calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate. This would provide you with the minimum amount of calories your body burns on a daily basis. Here is link to do so:

I'm confused as to how the numbers I'm getting on SP from FB are being calculated.

I had FitBit (the app on my phone, I'm waiting for the new devices before purchasing one) track a run (actually a walk, but never mind that) today. It logged 2 miles walked over 1 hour for 228 calories burned. My total calories burned for the day is clocking in at 1,617.

The only other "exercise" I've done today is walking around the house to get things done.

When I sync today's activity, SP logs one item - "All-Day Activity" at 994 calories burned.

Yesterday I did no exercise (just popped to the shops which involved driving and maybe 10 minutes of casual walking) and logged nothing in FB. However on SP I have two items logged - "FitBit Entry" at 438 calories burned and "All-Day Activity" at 1,071.

On Sunday I went for a walk, used FB to log it. 1.13 miles, 119 calories. On SP I have 1 entry, "All-Day Activity", at 445 calories burned.

Something's clearly wrong. I would expect to see either 1 item every day with higher values on the days I go for a walk, or a second item to account for the walk and 1 item to account for pottering about the house. I would also expect that if FB tracks my walk/run for 1 hour then I should see 60+ fitness minutes in SP, but I don't - for today I have 15, yesterday 16, and Sunday 4.

Does anyone know what's going wrong and what, if anything, I can do to fix it? I incorporate calories burned into my daily totals so it's skewing my range, and on a far more important note, the bad data will drive me MAD.

NB: I use a FitBit Aria and that's working perfectly, so I don't want to turn off syncing altogether and do it manually - though I'd be happy to have it sync weight but not exercise if that can be achieved somehow.

@ JESSICASALBADOR:

You can "force" a sync. Go to your Fitness page and there will be a button to accomplish this. If you do not see the button, then try disconnecting your device and then re-connecting it.

@ JSHOFFNER86:

Following are the syncing paths:

Food entered into SP syncs to FB
Activity tracked by your device goes from FB to SP
Weight syncs both ways
Sleep (for those trackers that track this activity) also syncs to your SP page.
Steps also sync from your FB page to your SP page.

A FEW NOTES:
-Any changes made to your tracked food DOES NOT sync to FB. You have to delete the entry on your FB page and re-enter there.
-Manually entered activity on your FB page DOES NOT sync to your SP page. These entries have to be manually entered into your SP page.
-Water DOES NOT sync in either direction

There is a way to edit what shows up on your feed. You can control what you see and what you post. I got tired of the "all day activity" thing too once I realized it was happening, and I just went to the right place and unchecked a box. Now my feed doesn't post my fitness anymore. There are tons of things you can choose to see or not see. If a friend posts a recipe, do you want to know? If you post a reply to someone's blog, do you want everyone else to know? You choose what to share. And you choose what you want to read.

Yes Raul.
My Fitbit has transmitted perfectly to my fitness tracker for as long as I have had it. No problem.
About two weeks ago I got an email that $&%^**^% likes something on your friend feed. And it turned out to be Granmalinda tracked all day fitness.....0 minutes.

It has show up there every day, until today. I do not see it there, I have deleted them because it is just silly. Like I spent the day in bed. Some of the days have had zero active minutes, but many have had 37, 54, etc and it still shows up as zero. I have checked my fitbit SP friends and theirs is doing the same thing.

It must be something you all added and it is simply not working.

BTW, I delete them every morning, I did not want to look silly. I will message you next time one shows up and let you go to my friend feed and see it.

SP will only sync FAIRLY ACTIVE and VERY ACTIVE minutes to your SP Fitness Page.
What are your 58 minutes on the your FB page classified as? I suspect perhaps LIGHTLY ACTIVE? These will not sync to your SP Fitness Page.

Thanks! I had linked the account successfully and was looking in the wrong place for the food tracking. It's there. I tried logging my sleep, however, and it's wrong. When it should have logged approximately 5 hours total it came up with 29! How did that happen??

OMG, I can't remember if I like my fitbit thru fitbit or thru sparkpeople. What I will say is, both my steps AND my food flow back and forth between the Fitbit dashboard and sparkpeople. Sleep (ok I have the fitbit flex that tracks sleep) sometimes will flow between the 2 programs and water does not seem to track from sparkpeople to the fitbit dashboard. I'm going back and count some more blessings if mine is working like it's suppose to.

With short term goals, it's one baby step or pound at a time.

I am getting something on my feed that seems to be coming from Fitibit. It posts daily that ..tracked 'All-Day' Activity (0 minutes) when my fitness tracker says 58 minutes.

Another SP friend's feed is reporting 3 and 4 minutes all day activity, makes no sense.

Help!!

And thanks.

Nothing except to keep in mind that your synced burned calories include a portion of the daily BMR.
Honestly I don't pay much attention to this information on my SP Fitness Page. I am more reliant on the data that my FB Dashboard provides me. I love the community on SP but find that the FB site offers more tools for losing weight/maintaining weight loss.

Hi friends, I just received my Fitbit last week and I noticed that my calories burned is extremely high when loaded from Fitbit into Spark. I'm thinking I'm not getting a very accurate number and wonder if I should unlink and just add my food and calories manually here....has anyone else encountered this??

Thanks so much for your input!

I see a number of people have unlinked their FitBit from SP. How do you do this please?

You're right. Long before I would log my FitBit steps manually in "Other Goals". Thanks!!

Hi all! Just been reading through everyone's experiences linking their fitbit to SP... I was wondering: are any of you having both the linking AND then tracking specific exercises on SP? It'll totally botch my totals, but since fitbit just "thinks" I'm walking (right?), it doesn't know my steps are on an elliptical (using incline and resistance). So, I feel that it really isn't an accurate picture if how many calories I've burned. Right now, I'm logging and linking. Trying to figure out if I want to continue like that. I've use SP for a long while without my fitbit and I know it motivates me, so just wondering if it's worth the link or if I'll just use them independent of one another. TIA!

Mimi

On your FB page click on the arrow for the FOOD PLAN tile. This will take you to your Food Log. Click on the right arrow in that tile and follow the prompts (clicking on the right arrow to move to the next section) This will allow you to adjust your food plan.

@ GLOFRY1:

Usually the stride length that your FB defaults to is OK as is but if you want to check there are several different ways to calculate it.
1) Mark a starting point, walk 10 normal steps, mark the ending point. Measure with a tape measure and divide the amount by 10 then multiply by 12 (inches). The result will be your stride. You would do the same thing if you want to measure your running stride (if you do run); or
2) Using your FB note your beginning step count, walk a known distance (using a treadmill or measured distance, i.e,. a running track is 440 yards per lap). Run or walk a mile then note your ending step count. Divide 5280 (the number of feet in a mile) by the number of step and then multiply by 12. The result is your stride length.

Unfortunately no there is not a way to "pick and choose" what is tracked.

hi, i am so confused! but that's probably okay, since i just got and linked my flex yesterday. i just went on my first mall walk today and it says i walked 4380steps and burned 1195 calories. i'm not really concerned with pinpoint accuracy, as long as it's relatively in the ballpark, but what i'm clueless on is Fitbit and sp both say i've eaten 302 calories (breakfast), but fb says i have 1568 calories left and sp says i have 1334-1664 left. when i set up something, it said i needed a deficit of -750 calories to make my goal, but where do i find that? since the fitbit ups my calorie allowance throughout the day, do i shoot for 750 on the calories left at the end of the day? i have no clue how much i'm supposed to actually eat, it's a moving target! help!

How can I accurately determine the length of my stride? I don't know if I have to do this in order for the FB to track my steps accurately. Also, I wear the FB on my left wrist which is not my dominant side. Should I move it to my right wrist (dominant) in order to more accurately track my steps. Thanks for the help.

I agree that it is misleading to have all my steps transfer to SP. I'm considering un-linking mine too, but I do like being able to log my food in SP and having it show up in FB. Is there a way to keep them linked for food but not for activity?

I think I'll unlink mine as well. I've been using my fitbit for several weeks now and I'm noticing the same thing. I am less motivated than before.

I have only been an active member of SparkPeople for a little over a week. At first, I did link my Fitbit One with Sparkpeople. But I found that it was making me lax in my fitness goals. Plus I would "earn" calories that I didn't feel I deserved. I found that I wasn't as motivated to do an intentional "workout" so I unlinked them. Now, not only am I still adding more steps in my day - striving for a more active lifrestyle in general, but I am also making sure that I do some type of focused activity for at least 10 minutes straight each day. Most of the time it is going for a walk. Now the only way I will "earn" calories is if I truly exercise. I like it better that way. emoticon

Don't waste your time with "could've," "would've" or "should've." Focus on "can," "will," and "do."

Time will pass no matter what .... will I be closer to or farther from my goals

It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not. Finally, I am ready to change!
