I just wanted to report in, I am on the 2nd day of the second week and I am loving the Beach. I am amazed at how much better I feel. I have been eating plenty and had a nice size loss the first week. So even though I was to busy to post, I am still here. Have a nice day and thanks for all the help.

Hugs, Gail

I'm afraid of some big dogs myself. LOL.

There are no bears where I live. Which is a good think because my medium size dog is afraid of large dogs.

Yoghurt suggestion is great for ranch dressing mix.

Freaky. I get the shotgun but the camo seems disconcerting. It's not hunting season and you usually don't want to surprise bears by being camouflaged.

Personally I use the dry ranch dressing and mix it with greek yogurt for dipping/spread/dressing. I have also used dill, garlic, etc - I just make sure that if there is sugar (many have sugar added) it is further down on the ingredient list.

Day off today from walking Marley. Was a bit disconcerting to run into some guy in cammo hat/shirt on a bike with a freakin shotgun yesterday. I knew we had teenagers who sometimes shoot out there but they haven't been out for awhile. Not sure what his story was and Marley was in full protection mode (a very good thing). We do have bears coming out and doing the berry eating thing...but still! emoticon

Are there any other dry salad dressing mixes? Adjusting the oil and or adding a little water is a good idea and if you add a little dijon mustard it helps the ingredients blend together. I love Quinoa and there are several good salad recipes listed in the recipe section. It does take a little getting used to.

I always loved the Good Seasons Italian dressing too. I have not seen it here in a while.

Hi team, how's everyone doing? I'm still doing my best to stick to south beach, just did some grocery shopping last night to stock up on all my favorites.

I've been eating quinoa almost every day and loving it. Last night I sauteed some spinach with garlic and shallots, and threw in some cooked quinoa. This made a great side dish for some salmon I broiled. I made chicken chili last week and served it over quinoa, and told my husband it was rice lol. He knew by the texture that something was up but he still ate it. I'm just going to keep sneaking him healthy foods until it sticks!

I have been eating 'overnight oats' for breakfast this week, and loving them. I had read about them on some blogs and decided to give them a try. Old fashioned oats, chia seeds, milk, cinnamon and a little honey. After sitting overnight in the fridge, it gets nice and chewy and it's nice change, before that I was eating a plain nonfat fage yogurt with chia seeds and fruit. I'm trying to eliminate splenda from my diet, which is why I'm using a bit of honey here and there. It's really about a teaspoon.

For salad dressing, I just love the good seasons italian dressing you make at home in the cruet, and you can adjust the oil which is nice. It is my favorite right now!

Have a great week everyone!

I read a suggestion to build lunch around vegetables to keep on track. Adding in some black beans, chick peas, or white beans and a little cheese really helps to meet some of the basic elements of the SP plan. I sit down and plan twice a week to have all the fixings on hand and it has really made it easier to keep on track.

There is a Tools section on the team (ie click on the name of the team so it presents the full team page) which has food lists, nutshell guidelines, etc. That should get you going and if not, there is the Ask the Team Leader stickied thread - ask away! emoticon

David Ludwig published a study comparing low fat and low carb diets. I heard the reports on NPR but you can put David Ludwig in Google and get other news reports. His findings really support the SB diet.

I do exactly what you suggested. If I'm pressed for time I will fix my breakfast the night before and put it in a microwave container to warm up the next day. It does fine. I fix my breakfast normally in the microwave and it takes no time at all.

I sure hope you are right SUNNYBEACHGIRL. I have been trying to lose for so long counting calories but able to eat whar I wanted and have had some success. But what I notices was the longer I was doing it, the more fat I was accoumulating on my mid section, even with some exercise. My go to for evey meal and snack was sandwich thins, bagel thins and low calorie breads that would last on the counter for months and not mold. Even in the hot weather. Now, something is not right there, So I decided to try a new way of thinking and here I am, starting day 5 of Phase 1. I am loving it so far.

Thanks for the great sounding recipe. I printed it off and will probably make it with rainbow swiss chard that is in my garden.

Have a good day!
Gail

Love the goat cheese and kale recipe. Although kale isn't something I have tried. Love to use spinach everywhere and it blends in so well. Kale looks so "strong" do you use it just like spinach? Salad dressings are one of my weaknesses so I tend to avoid them when I am out and always have something homemade in the refrigerator. Part of the South Beach is really rethinking the ingredients and foods that are high in carbs. There have been some studies in the news that indicated that people on low carb diets do much better with weight loss than people on low fat diets.

I just pinned this to my Pinterest board. It does have goat cheese which technically is higher in fat for the cheese but it is totally phase 1 (and we didn't get fat from the "fat grams" in cheese):
www.thekitchn.com/easy-breakfast-rec
ip
e-kale-and-goat-cheese-frittata-cupsR>-166901#

I would also suggest for those grab and go thangs besides the other "muffins" (ie check the phase 1 recipe thread in the recipe section) - rollups which work well for lunch too. Think outside the breakfast box! Rollups, almonds w/can of v8, hamburger (beef/turkey/whatever) patty w/romaine lettuce leaves (think sandwich) or with slice or two of tomatoes...

Does anyone have some make ahead breakfast ideas? I take medication in the morning that must be on an empty stomach, so I eat at work around 9 AM. I need some items I can make 2 or 3 days worth at one time and store it in the fridge or freezer. Can I scramble eggs and ham and reheat in the microwave? Or would it turn to rubber? I have limited time at work for prep and eating, so it would have to be a quick meal. I found some frozen cheese omelets at Safeway but they are pricey and frankly bland. Does anyone have some good ideas?

Congrats Nola on the good doc visit!

Gail - I would worry less about the fat in any cheese you eat (since it is more or less limited on how much you can eat to begin with anyways). Keep your servings to the one or two and you will be fine. The salad dressing is definitely one I do recommend people follow the guidelines since it is a sound one.

Hi everyone, I just thought I would check in and let you know this new member is really enjoying Phase 1 and this is my 4th day. I did goof up a little. My Newmans Own light ginger dressing I have been using has on 35 calories but then I saw it had 4 g. sugar and I see Iit can only have 3 g. or less. Also I was using about a haalf oz. of goat cheese on my salad and it had 7g. fat and it should of been 6 or under. Too late now to fix it but I bought a new dressing today hat is OK, but 60 calories. I will get the hang of being on the Beach.

I visited my primary today and she was thrilled with a 9 lb. weight loss since May. She is hoping for another 10 by Christmas. I actually had lost 4 in the last 2 weeks. My bouts with low B/P and low pulse on occasion is thought to be orthstatic hypo tension probably because of sensitivity to medications and the swallowing problems are due to my hiatal hernia. All in all a good report and a happy Dr. I will be doing fasting blood work soon just to check things out.
I was not on plan today but am having to eat sot things that are easy to swallow until the hernia calms down. emoticon

emoticon hey hey - I didn't fall off the world! Freaking CRAZY last few days. I took EIGHT ferry trips between Friday and Sunday evening. I had Aliegh overnight Friday. I had several events in the city on Saturday. And then my girlfriend has an annual "pie fight" right before school starts. Families all get together and they literally have a pie throwing contest, followed by a water balloon fight - and then potluck. Add the fact that I walked 30 miles over the same amount of time - I am exhausted. Today is my rest day. Hubby is home to walk the dog so I don't have to - which is good since my feet are all torn up. Man I blister and callous easily - it aint pretty. I did manage to keep my weight consistent all weekend so that was a miracle - especially considering we went to this place Saturday night that was a freakin fried food extravaganza. It was INSANE (and eventually gross). emoticon

Today I am playing catch up, resting and doing some batch cooking!

I am visiting family for mom's 90th birthday. Dinner last night and breakfast this morning was not on track at all. Wish me good thoughts for the rest of the weekend.

It is always fun to check out new cookbooks. Be sure to share the name of receipes which are great.

I managed to pick up the Super Quick Cookbook for $7.99 which is a great price here, as it is usually $34.99. I had already shopped for meals for last night and tonight, but will begin when I get back from home on Tuesday. Hubby is looking forward to it.

I'm going to try to stick to uber-low carbs for these two weeks of P1 that I'm doing. Just trying to lose every bit I can before my brother's wedding! I certainly couldn't do it for too long!

I'm going to Canada's one and only bookstore chain (hate monopolies) and pick up the new SB Diet Supercharged, as well as see if they have any cookbooks. I'll go to Costco at the same time as hubby needs to be stocked before I leave for home.

Eddy I went on an elimination diet for a month because Hubby's diabetes and arthritis was out of control and doctor wanted to add a host of meds. The diet eliminated everything except quinoa flakes, sweet potatoes, zucchini, turkey breast and salmon. We added foods back in one at a time and tested his blood sugar. Foods like potatoes, corn, pasta, full-fat dairy and most grains sent his blood sugar numbers through the roof. By doing this with him it really helped me to see what foods affected the numbers on the scale and it also cleared my system of carbs. I found that I needed some carbs and was able to find a healthy level. SB phase 2 really works for us. Too low of an amount of carbs is really hard to maintain. Hubby lost 20 lbs and did not have to add any meds. Men lose it easier than women. Unfair.

sounds like atkins. I think atkins is a great diet but I could never do it. I've never gotten down to 20gms on net carbs a day. Too much deprivation. My favorite foods are fruits and veggies.

Oh Beans! I keep forgetting the Beans. Thanks for the reminder. Yesterday, I was really tempted to blow it all. Even considered mixing some Bisquick dry with brown sugar and butter and just eat it. Yuck! Beans! I missed the BEANS! hahaha. yup…I've lost it.

I was just reading about a plan that has you eating only 20 grams of carbs a day...the ketogenic diet.

Thoughts?

Sunny - I don't look at my carbs too often. I primarily count calories and just avoid carbs if at all possible!

I can resist most bread except the really good stuff. LOL.

Eddy I agree about the bread, toasted is the only way to go. Adding a small amount of beans to a salad helps to vary the textures and "sort of" replace the croutons. The SB diet guide and counting calories works for me too. Do you keep the carbs at a particular level or just within a daily calorie count.

The little ziploc containers sound great - ill have to keep my eye out for those. What a great idea!

I absolutely LOVE Ezekiel bread. I get the sesame, in the green package. I only eat mine toasted...not very fun to eat otherwise. My favorite is a slice of Ezekiel bread, ff cream cheese, a slice of tomato and cucumber and for added protein, topped with an egg fried in Pam. It's the on,y bread I eat, when I eat bread. Dave's Killer Bread is very tasty, too, and you'd probably like it much more :)

I love beans, but use them as a condiment/topping (ie in a towed salad) as opposed to eating it as a side. SBD works best for me of I count my calories, and the beans are too high for me and honesty, don't really fill me up. But like I said, tossed in a salad...delish!

You are to eat 1/3 to 1/2 cups of beans a day but you can have more. Keep in mind that beans are very calorie dense and calories do count. I don't think a 1/3 up at lunch and dinner will be a problem.

A question on Phase 1 and beans. Are they limited? I am still in the prepping to start Phase 1 and I have always seemed to need a starch of some description to feel full at a meal. Beans are about as close as I seem to be able to come to a starch in Phase 1 and was wondering if I could do the 1/3 C serving at lunch and dinner if I wanted to.

It would be a lot easier for me to get back on track if I could stay healthy enough to concentrate on something besides feeling physically drained. LOL.

Following Phase 2 plan faithfully for the past 5 days and doing my walking every day. The good news is that I am down 1.5 lbs. However, I am hungry all the time now and have to really focus on the good vegetables and fruits.

I eat 6 triscuits almost every day as a snack, mainly because they seem to satisfy my need to crunch on something and the small amount fills me up. I eat the Ezekiel bread because is has a lot of fiber and very little fat or sugar. I wouldn't say that it is the best tasting bread but it helps me add the grains in to my plan. My husband won't touch it.

Thinking positive thoughts for all of us who are jumping back on plans this week. emoticon

Hey team! Long time no see lol. I have been a bad beacher lately, I had a tough week last week but yesterday I decided enough is enough and I am getting back on track. Too much weekend eating off plan, and week days spent undoing my weekend damage!

I wanted to share a new thing I've been having for lunch the past few weeks at work. I got these ziploc containers that have little compartments, like my own little lunchables, so cute. I've been putting a little salad in the largest compartment, with baby spinach, turkey breast, goat cheese and craisins, and italian dressing. In the smaller size I had been putting a hard boiled egg but today I went with 6 tricuits and a piece of cheese, and then in the last I have a bunch of grapes for dessert. I really like this little mix of foods for lunch, it keeps things fun.

How does that Ezekial bread taste? I've been thinking about trying it but I'm afraid lol. Is it good? My husband is a picky eater, think he would eat it? Like does it taste like regular bread or does it definitely taste different.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

I did Sweatin' to the Oldies when I was in high school and lost plenty (also followed a low-cal, low-fat diet, since that was in vogue back then!).

Oh, and cauliflower pizza crust is also something I want to try! I think I'll do it this week :)

Excited for my steak tonight :) Yum!

Afternoon everyone, gosh it's been a long time since I was on here but I am back officially tomorrow. A friend sent me this recipe and I believe it's SB friendly so I thought I would share it.

Broccoli Pizza Crust

Prep Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 8-10

Ingredients
2 cups cooked broccoli, shredded ( squeeze out as much water as you can)
2 large eggs
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

Combine all and press evenly into well greased in to a pan or cookie sheet (this makes a LARGE 14 inch crust) sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper and basil (if desired).
Bake at 450 degrees until browned and bubbly (15-20 minutes).
Top like a pizza and rebake to cook toppings.

Kirea, girl. You are so awesome! Thanks for the quick reply. It is logged into. My daughter in love talked me into that workout. I am so glad. I used it in the 80's and had a blast with it today. I am wiped out though. Phew! I will be walking tomorrow. I don't think I can "dance in the street" two days in a row. emoticon

Log the Richard Simmons as Aerobic, low impact which covers dvds. Otherwise you would have to have a heart rate monitor for a true calorie burn.

Crazy busy this weekend but hey I managed to not regain any weight (ie I have been up and down the same three pounds for weeks now) so maybe I am going to see a weight shift down this week! Of course means keeping rein on myself this week..haha.
