The Finisher by David Baldacci 4 stars

This is a book for young adults of which I am definitely not!
When I got it, I didn't realize that it was a fantasy for YA but Baldacci is one of my favorite authors so after I had it, I decided to go ahead and read it.

For what it is, it is good. After starting it, I could not put it down until I got to the end.

The Silver Linings Playbook: A Novel by Matthew Quick - 5 stars

An enchanting first novel about love, madness, and Kenny G.
The Silver Linings Playbook is the riotous and poignant story of how one man regains his memory and comes to terms with the magnitude of his wife’s betrayal.
During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.
When Pat meets the tragically widowed and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year’s Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their “contract.” All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining.
In this brilliantly written debut novel, Matthew Quick takes us inside Pat’s mind, deftly showing us the world from his distorted yet endearing perspective. The result is a touching and funny story that helps us look at both depression and love in a wonderfully refreshing way.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartte - 5*

The story begins with an explosion at the Metropolitan Museum that kills narrator Theo Decker's beloved mother and results in his unlikely possession of a Dutch masterwork called The Goldfinch. Shootouts, gangsters, pillowcases, storage lockers, and the black market for art all play parts in the ensuing life of the painting in Theo's care. Over 783 pages the book goes through the next 14 years of Theo's life. A dark story it is a bit unweildy at times but I am glad to have read it.

Near-term science fiction featuring a new technology that allows minds to become networked and function as we understand computer operating systems to. Explores the technological, psychological, political, philosophical, geopolitical, academic, creative, and personal implications rippling out from the emergence of that technology.

Super interesting characters and characterizations on top of all that, too.

Until the Robin Walks on Snow by Bernice L. Rocque

In a small Connecticut town, in November 1922, an immigrant family and a devoted midwife struggle to save the life of premature baby, weighing only a pound and a half when he is born. This historical fiction novella is about determination, family, faith and friendship, and includes a chapter about the family's Polish and Lithuanian Christmas Eve traditions.

The story was inspired by true events in the lives of the author's ancestors; the older brother of the premature infant was the author's father.

This was an engaging story, more character driven than plot driven. One of the things that drew me to the story is that I have a younger sister who was born a preemie, during the 1960's, who was also only 1 1/2 pounds when she was born. No one was sure at that time if she was going to make it at first, so it was interesting to read to how this family took care of their baby at home, in a home with no electricity or running water, at a time when the mortality rate for preemies was much higher than it is now. (And by the way, my sister thrived, and she is still here with us today.)

4* Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

During the summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted the fact that she is at the bottom of the eight grade social food chain; but one day, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world", moves across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all; beauty, brains, and ambition. On the surface, they seem to be complete opposites: Kate, who feels she will forever be uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at times, and Tully, with her air of glamor and mystery, is trying to hide a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever.

For the next 30 years, Tully and Kate are there for each other, even at times when jealousy, anger, hurt and resentment threaten their friendship, until an ultimate act of betrayal threatens to tear them apart forever. Can they find their way back to each other before it is too late?

I really enjoyed this story; I grew up during the 70's and early 80's, and I really enjoyed the pop culture references throughout the book during the different decades of the story, including the music, fashions, and home decor. I liked how the two girls bonded as teenagers, when they both felt like lonely outsiders; I remember feeling like that at that age too, what it meant to have one friend in the world who understood me.

There is also a sequel to this book, Fly Away, which I am looking forward to reading in the future.

I know I'm weird, but I like quotations. That said, other than trying to rewire my brain that people were talking, I liked this book. Not sure I put it on the great pieces of literature shelf, but it was an interesting piece of history/memoir.

Epic Legends of Fantasy
Edited by John Joseph Adams

It is an anthology of Fantasy writing by authors such as George R.R. Martin, Robin Hobb, Ursula Leguin, etc.

I give the book 3.5 stars. There were stories in it that will stay with me a long time, and there were some that were ehh. I would take this on the plane but not cry a lot if I lost it. It just made me want more, way more of the authors that I did like.

It kind of felt like getting a small box of chocolates, on a really depressing day...not enough.

This is book 4 of the Clifton Chronicles. Very exciting read about two English families. The ending of the book is always the beginning of the next. Kind of like "Who shot J.R.?" Read until the wee hours of the morning but had to save the last 6 chapters for today.

Reflected In You by Sylvia Day- 4.5 stars
Gideon Cross. As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn't stay away. I didn't want to. He was my addiction... my every desire... mine.

My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We’d never work. It was too hard, too painful... except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity.

We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession.

Faithful Place by Tana French 4 stars

This is the 3rd book in the Dublin Murder Squad series, all of which have been audiobooks for me. Toss up to me as to which audio was better - either this or the first. Now to the story.

I almost didn't get this from the library. It was sort of a last ditch attempt. The stories by themselves weren't horrible, but the overall theme to me seemed to be that this squad couldn't quite get the job done. Yes, you got to know who "did it", but really, things didn't happen as they should. That happens. I get that. But when it happens 2 out of 2 times, I am a bit more reluctant to get behind the police/guard.

Faithful Place, was different. And I am so grateful because I found the story riveting and when it was getting towards the end, I was getting so uptight that we were headed down the same road again. I am happy to say, that isn't how it went. Not everything got fully resolved, but it didn't need to. And without giving away the end, I'll leave it at that.

The Divinity of Dogs: True Stories of Miracles Inspired by Man's Best Friend by Jennifer Skiff - 4 stars

Product Description
“My dogs have been the reason I have woken up every single day of my life with a smile on my face. I am among the ranks of millions of people who appreciate the souls of dogs and know they are a gift of pure love and an example of all that is good.” —Jennifer Skiff

The Divinity of Dogs is about the moments you learn something profound about life from an experience with a dog. Featuring more than seventy stories culled from hundreds of submissions to the author’s website, these inspiring and heartwarming true stories show where love, tolerance, comfort, compassion, loyalty, joyfulness, and even death have provided experiences that have led to spiritual enlightenment.

You’ll meet Little Bit, the Chihuahua who detected a small lump in her owner’s breast, a growth even doctors couldn’t find. There’s Emma, the devoted Rottweiler who ferociously grabbed her owner’s arm at the moment he was trying to commit suicide, saving his life. You’ll be inspired by Luna, the Retriever who dragged her owner to safety after she collapsed late at night in a field. And you’ll fall in love with the many dogs who simply provide steady comfort when needed— dogs like Bo, the Boxer who soothed his mistress after the loss of her son. The author also weaves her own experiences with dogs throughout the book, showing how they comforted her through mistreatment as a child, a divorce, and a cancer diagnosis.

The stories that make up The Divinity of Dogs provide hope, help, and healing for readers in the complex and difficult times in which we live. Whether you believe dogs are divine or are actually a gift from the divine, The Divinity of Dogs gives you permission to accept what you know: dogs are healers, educators, protectors, and tangible examples of pure love.

Claiming His Pregnant Wife – Kim Lawrence - 3.5* - A quick read

Blue Lines: The Assassins Series – Toni Aleo - 3.5* - Part of a series about a hockey team in Nashville (the Assassins) and the members of the team. This was the fourth book, but I read it first and had not much trouble following along.

The Wanderer Robyn Carr *****

I was hesitant to start another Robyn Carr series. But I so enjoyed the last ones on audio and these are enjoyable, too. It is the same narrator and I LOVE how she changes her voice.

This is first in the Thunder Point series. Hank Cooper arrives to this small Oregon town. He has inherited beachfront property from an old friend who died in a questionable fall. Hank befriends a young teen who is bullied and hooks up with the teen's sister. It is small town living and an enjoyable read. I even decided to start #2 in the series.

The Measure of Katie Calloway by Serena Miller

The Civil War has ended, but there is still conflict raging in Katie Calloway's home in Georgia. When she finds out that her abusive husband plans to kill her so that he can marry a wealthy war widow to rebuild his ruined plantation, Katie and her little brother Ned flee as far north as the train can take them, which is Bay City, Michigan. There she meets Robert Foster, who is looking for a cook for his logging camp.

Katie takes the job, and she and Ned find sanctuary in the camp. Robert wonders if the young woman has the grit to survive the harsh conditions and never ending work, and Katie wonders if she can keep her past a secret from the man she slowly growing to love.

I really enjoyed this story, it was so much more in depth than I had expected. I felt like I was experiencing life in a logging camp right along with Katie. The characters were richly drawn; I enjoyed getting to know all of the logging men and their different personalities.

I have lived in Michigan my whole life, and I knew the state had a rich logging history, but I had not read much about it until I picked up this book. The author did very well with her research, and it gave me a new appreciation for all the work, and the danger involved in what it takes to get wood to the consumers who will use it, something I think a lot of us of take for granted.

I don't know if there is a sequel planned for this book, but I would love to read one, not only to find out what happens next to main characters, but all the other characters as well.

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, I am now in hospice care for metastatic breast cancer, but I'm not letting cancer stop me from Sparking!
