Three books that happened before the Virgin River Series started, but have characters that show up there.

Deep in the Valley - Robyn Carr - 4*
Just Over the Mountain - Robyn Carr - 4.5*
Down by the River - Robyn Carr - 4.5*

These are all about the local, single female doctor in the town and her life over the course of a year. This is all about small town life (about 1500 people). I enjoyed the stories and got involved with all the people.

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle 5*

This is my favourite of the Sherlock Holmes novels (yes, I like it considerably more than the hounds of Baskerville). It's just got a wonderful touch of romance and revenge and adventure. Kind of hits all the right buttons for an enjoyable book in my mind. ^_^

4* The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

This novel is a grim account of the deplorable conditions of the Chicago meatpacking industry in the early 1900's, as seen through the eyes of Jurgis, a Lithuanian immigrant who came to America with his family in search of a better life. But their dreams are soon dashed, and they are forced to endure the many hardships of poverty, and face dangerous working conditions and discrimination.

When this novel was published in 1906, the descriptions of how meat was packaged and handled, (they quite literally used "everything but the squeal".), the public outrage forced the government to investigate the industry and this lead to the food safety laws that we have today.
I have to say, if I had lived back then and read this book, I would certainly have become a vegetarian.

It was a well told story, but also sad and depressing too. I didn't care so much for the last part of the book; the last few chapters seemed to be all about politics, a subject that bores me, and it was hard to stay interested towards the end of the book. I wish that the story had wrapped up with more about what happened to Jurgis and his family.

15) I Am Not a Serial Killer by Dan Wells 4 stars

Young John Wayne Cleaver knows he's a sociopath, and has the tendencies shared by 95% of serial killers. He's working hard to appear normal, and NOT let the monster loose - but someone is killing people in the little town of Clayton, and John wants to find out who.

and 2 by Jayne Ann Krentz:

16) Legacy 3 stars
Legacy is a thoroughbred, owned by Conn Landry. Conn weaves a web to entrap Honor Mayfield, and finds himself entrapped (hey, it's a romance novel) Written in '85, it seemed dated to me.

17) Twist of Fate 4 stars
Another romance novel written in '85, but it seemed less dated to me. Gideon Cage is a corporate raider, and Hannah Jenset wants to prevent him from taking over her brother's company. Hannah has inherited her anthropologist aunt's journals - and someone was trying to harm her.

Early this month, I finished "Everything and the Moon", Julia Quinn. It's about fall in love at first time meet the person but because of inteference from their fathers, they had to endure years of misery, years of longing of what could happen and years of hating each other. But then after 7 years, they meet again and the sparks still on. I love this book from beginning to end, I feel so deeply for both hero and heroin, just want to choke both their mendling fathers.

Now, I'm reading "Born To Bite", Lynsay Sands. I usually love her books but this one seems to be a bit different that her style.

I love the Victoria Laurie series as well! Her Psychic Eye series is also a lot of fun and MJ (main character in Ghouls series) appears in one of the Psychic Eye books.

Just finished Home for A Spell by Madelyn Alt - another paranormal mystery. 2 stars - not nearly as good as the other books in the series. Disappointing.

Very different & engaging book about a journalist who is hired to solve a 4 decade old murder.

I actually read this book about a year ago and read the 2nd a few months ago (its a series of 3 and won't be more as the author died.) Decided to re-read the 1st before moving on to the 3rd.

cold flat junction by martha grimes- 3 stars

From Publishers Weekly
Grimes made her reputation with her Richard Jury mysteries, but she has also successfully produced character-driven psychological fiction. This smartly written, quietly paced sequel to her 1996 hit Hotel Paradise revisits precocious 12-year-old sleuth Emma Graham, working in her family's fading resort hotel on Spirit Lake in smalltown America. Setting this narrative a week after the close of its predecessor, Grimes chronicles Emma's investigation of three family murders. Ben Queen has recently been released from prison after serving 20 years for the murder of his wife, Rose Devereau Queen. Fern Queen, Rose and Ben's daughter, who "had always been touched in the head," is found shot, and Ben is once again the prime suspect. Emma knows that Ben could not have committed either murder. Unfortunately, she can't tell the sheriff without letting on that Ben is hiding in the old Devereau house. Emma is aware that all these events began 40 years ago with the mysterious drowning death of 12-year-old Mary-Evelyn Devereau, who was being cared for by her three aunts, Rose's half sisters. And who is the spectral "Girl" who keeps appearing and disappearing? Skillfully constructed as a smart, independent child learning to be a self-aware adult, Emma has a talent for indirect routes, self-fulfilling lies and pumping her unwitting sources for a great deal of information. Her meditations can occasionally make slow reading, and she tells her story in almost as roundabout a way as she investigates, but the effect is surprisingly satisfying. Like Ruth Rendell writing as Barbara Vine, Grimes obviously enjoys straying from more traditional mysteries, though under her own name. Fans of Grimes's Richard Jury series undoubtedly read her in both incarnations, and the sophisticated jacket design should help lure general readers to this well-wrought narrative.

FORGET WILLPOWER.

8) Deadly Vows - Shirlee McCoy 3 stars

The next book in the Love Insired Suspense series "Protecting the Witnesses" has Olivia Jarrod in the Witness Protection Program until she has testified against the Marino mob family. Shortly after entering the program, she finds out she is pregnant. Her estanged husband doesn't know about the baby initially until the mob family roughs him up looking for Olivia and he decides he still wants to be with her. Unfortunately, the US Marshalls have not plugged up the leak in their office so the two are constantly on the run throughout the book. This series has been really good and ties characters from one book into the next one for continuity.

sucker bet by james swain- audio- 3 stars

From Booklist
In the mystery genre, there's always room for a new premise, and Swain has come up with a doozy: his hero, Tony Valentine, is an ex-cop who specializes in catching casino cheats. The downside of the job is that Tony must work for casino owners, which is why, as this third entry in the high-spirited series begins, he is on the lam, enjoying a romance with a lady wrestler and even participating in the odd tag-team match. But when the romance founders and Tony gets a summons from the head of security at Florida's Micanopy Indian Reservation Casino, he heads for the Everglades. The scam is several layers deep--crooked blackjack dealers and fixed basketball games play roles, along with a couple of nasty alligators eager to test Tony's wrestling skills. The gambling details are a treat, the banter is worthy of a place at Elmore Leonard's table, and the Floridian sense of absurdity draws on Hiaasen without seeming derivative. With a new publisher willing to back Tony's play, Swain's ship just may have come in.

FORGET WILLPOWER.

14) Heart of the Wolf by Terry Spear 3 stars

Another werewolf romance book. Hmmm - it could have been better - seems like the author would build tension and "pop!" it's over.

Bella is a red lupus garuou (werewolf), raised by grays when her family was killed in a fire. She's always desired Devlyn as her mate, but the alpha wolf, Volan, says she's his. Bella runs away and lives as a lone wolf, until Devlyn funally finds her.

On Folly Beach - Karen White 4*
From Library summary:

Folly Beach, South Carolina, has survived despite hurricanes and war. But it's the personal battles of Folly Beach's residents that have left the most scars, and why a young widow has been beckoned there to heal her own... To most people, Folly Beach is simply the last barrier island before reaching the great Atlantic. To some, it's a sanctuary for lost souls, which is why Emmy Hamilton's mother encourages her to buy the local book store, Folly's Finds, hoping it will distract Emmy from the loss of her husband. Emmy is at first resistant. So much has already changed. But after finding love letters and an image of a beautiful bottle tree in a box of used books from Folly's Finds, she decides to take the plunge. But the seller insists on one condition: Emmy must allow Lulu, the late owner's difficult sister, to continue selling her bottle trees from its back yard. For the most part Emmy ignores Lulu as she sifts through the love letters, wanting to learn more. But the more she discovers about the letters, the more she understands Lulu. As details of a possible murder and a mysterious disappearance during WWII are revealed, the two women discover that circumstances beyond their control, sixty years apart, have brought them together, here on Folly Beach. And it is here that their war-ravaged hearts can find hope for a second chance...

All I Want for Christmas Is a Vampire (Love at Stake, Book 5) by Kerrelyn Sparks

5 stars - Love this series!!

Toni Davis's Christmas wish list

1. Springing my best friend from the psych ward.

2. Living somewhere that doesn't have coffins in the basement. Occupied coffins.

3. Finding Mr. Right. Please make him tall, dark, handsome, and alive.

This Christmas isn't so merry for Toni. Her best friend's been locked up in a mental hospital ever since she told the police she was attacked by vampires, and the only way for Toni to get her out is to prove that bloodsuckers really do exist. So she's taken a job as a bodyguard for the Undead, but she gets more than she bargained for, especially when she meets Ian MacPhie, a Scottish rascal looking for Ms. Right.

Although Ian's nearly five centuries old, he looks and acts like a twenty-seven-year-old hunk.

How can a dead man be so damn sexy? Could Mr. Wrong be Mr. Right? One forbidden kiss could lead to an eternity of passion—and all it takes is one moment under the mistletoe . . .

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese - 4 stars

I'm "new" here and hoping to stick around a lot longer than last year as I try to reach my goal. Anyway, reading is my passion. This book was an really a sweeping saga that is about the lives of two Ethiopian twins and the nun and dr. who were their parents. Excellent on so many levels!

"Storm Prey" by John Sandford ***.5

I ran out of books to read, so grabbed this better than average action/adventure from DH's stack from the library. Pre-dawn on a frigid Minnesota morning, four men rob a hospital pharmacy, duct-taping the hands, feet, eyes, and mouths of the two works and emptying the shelves. When one worker frees his hands and starts fumbling for his phone, a robber kicks him to death. They flee, almost running into a blond woman just pulling into the parking garage - a neurosurgeon who is part of a team attempting to separate two infant girls joined at the head. The well laid robbery plan soon disintigrates into mayhem and chaos as the burglars attempt to cover all possible trails that might lead to them, as well as any possible witness.

Scott Pilgram series (graphic novels but definitely more of a book than a comic) By Bryan O'Malley. 3 stars.

I wouldn't recommend it for non-geeks or for people over 40 or under 18 necessarily. Some people from those groups would get it, but not many. However, if you saw and liked the movie, the books are MUCH better.

You can make it a great day or not. The choice is yours.

The Reader by Bernard Schlink - 4 Stars

The Reader (Der Vorleser) is a novel by German law professor and judge Bernhard Schlink. It was published in Germany in 1995 and in the United States (translated into English by Carol Brown Janeway) in 1997. It deals with the difficulties which subsequent generations have in comprehending the Holocaust; specifically, whether a sense of its origins and magnitude can be adequately conveyed solely through written and oral media. This question is increasingly at the center of Holocaust literature in the late 20th and early 21st century, as the victims and witnesses of the Holocaust die and its living memory begins to fade.

6* The Apothecary's Daughter by Julie Klassen

In this novel set in the early 1800's of England, Lilly Haswell longs to leave her father's apothecary shop in their small town and see more of the world. When her aunt and uncle invite her to live in London with them, she accepts, leaving behind her lonely father, handicapped brother, and her friends.

But in London, she has her troubles there too, when she captures the attentions of a few suitors, but her humble background may ruin her chances of making a good match. She also tries to find out what happened to her mother, who ran away from her family 3 years earlier.
More complications ensue when Lilly is called home when her father falls into ill health. She takes over her father's shop, a risky thing to do, because in those days, a woman running an apothecary shop was illegal.

When circumstances occur in which her family may lose the shop, and even worse, Lilly learns what is really important in life, and who the woman is that she is meant to be.

I really enjoyed this novel, especially the details of the apothecary trade at that time, and how the medicines were made and used. They were like pharmacies, but they did not need a doctor's prescription to dispense drugs, and often practiced medicine themselves.

I also liked that you could not predict early in the story who Lilly would end up with, the romance part of the story was not predictable at all, and I felt portrayed realistically. Other unexpected secrets kept the story engrossing too.

knit two- the friday night knitting group- audio- by kate jacobs- 4 stars

From Publishers Weekly
Continuing the warm-and-fuzzy saga begun in her popular The Friday Night Knitting Club, Jacobs stitches together another winning tale of the New York City knitting circle, more a sisterhood than a hobby group (the irascible Darwin Chiu can't even really knit). In this installment-and it does feel like an installment-readers catch up five years after the unexpected, book-capping death of club leader (and knitting shop owner Georgia Walker. Georgia's 18-year-old Dakota is at NYU, discovering her first love, while her father James and Georgia's best friend Catherine are still coming to terms. The rest of the cast runs a wide gamut of ages and experience, but is easier to follow this time around, as Jacobs is more comfortable giving them more space and backstory. Pregnant, whip-smart professor Darwin and her husband, Dan, are welcoming twins; video director and single mom Lucie is coping with a hyperactive 5-year-old and a failing parent; Georgia's old mentor, the wise Anita, begins questioning her own motives; and everyone's stories cross paths in satisfying, organic ways. A trip to Italy provides some forward motion, and pays off in a charming denouementthat nevertheless pushes a familiar it's-the-journey-not-the-destination message; still, this sequel is as comforting, enveloping and warm as a well-crafted afghan.

Second Glance by Jodi Picoult
3 1/2 ***

Ghosts and ghost hunters collide in this compelling tale of the paranormal set in Vermont's green mountains. When the patriarch of the Abenaki Indian tribe that was nearly eradicated by that state's eugenics project in the 1930s encounters Ross Wakeman, the miraculous survivor of several attempted suicides who wants nothing more than to be reunited with the woman he loved and lost, they set in motion a chain of events that will unravel an ancient murder and lead to a second chance at life and love for the victim's descendants. Picoult, author of Salem Falls, brings the past alive and peoples it with a cast of extraordinarily well-realized characters whose reach into the future touches the lives of a dying boy, a frightened girl, and their mothers--two women who've given up on love until the revenants stirred up by a plan to develop an ancient burial ground show them what they're missing. Second Glance is an intricate and suspenseful ghost story that enchants and illuminates all the way to its powerful conclusion (amazon)

maybe I have read too many Jodi Picoult, they are starting to lose their magic for me

resurrection row by anne perry- 4 stars

From Library Journal
This 1981 mystery, the fourth in the long-running series featuring Inspector Thomas Pitt and his well-born wife, Charlotte, is one of the best for its balance between the mystery itself and Perry's scathing portrait of Victorian society. It is bad enough that the recently deceased Lord Fitzroy-Hammond has been removed from his grave, but when it happens a second time and then other buried corpses start popping up, the normally unflappable Pitt is puzzled indeed. Is the perpetrator trying to hide a murder or call attention to one? The answer lies in a convoluted but perfectly logical merging of art, blackmail, politics, pornography, and prostitution. Perry (Paragon Walk) delights in showing how much of London, except for a handful of influential citizens, chose to ignore the shameful poverty surrounding them. This provocative tale, extremely well read by Davina Porter, is highly recommended for popular collections.

Making Money ****
by Terry Pratchett

This is another novel in the humorist's Discworld series and the sequel to "Going Postal"

Moist von Lipwig did such a great job of putting the post office back on its feet, he is asked to take over Ankh-Morpork's ailing financial system. The head cashier of the Royal bank is a vampire and the chairman is a little dog. The mint is running at a loss and something nameless lives in the cellar.

Von Lipwig discovers that all the gold has been stolen from the gold reserve so he decides to put the financial system on a Golem standard (Ankh-Morpork has plenty of those.)

Terry Pratchett is a hoot!!

The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen - 1* - got halfway thru, hated every single character, actually bringing it back to the store. Can’t figure out what all the hype was about. I won’t be reading Freedom. (I know we're not supposed to list books we didn't finish, but I'm just so disappointed, it's galling me!)

The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman – 3*** - interestingly-crafted novel, featuring characters in stand-alone tho intertwined vignettes. A homage to old-fashioned newspaper publishing.

I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley – 5***** - I rarely read non-fiction. But I needed something humorous. Every single essay is hysterical.

Angelology by Danielle Trussoni – 5***** – Took me a while to get into it, and then I couldn’t put it down. Fun to read something about good/evil angels instead of vampires. Historical mystery. I hope there’s a sequel.

Model Home by Eric Puchner – 3*** - the disintegration of a family. Ultimately too sad for me, but it had its humorous moments. Very well-written characters.

Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín – 2** - good coming-to-America story, but I found myself losing patience with the protagonist. Worth the read, tho.

Smart Girls Like Me by Diane Vadino – 1* - vapid Bridget Jones-type chick lit in the guise of Brooklyn-hipster story.

The Widower's Tale by Julia Glass – 2** - the best part about this family story was how Glass wrote differently from each character’s perspective. Story was boring and bleh.
