What wonderful ideas for the family. I'm sure they will appreciate it.
Found out I'm last for surgery, which I knew, but it will be around 2:00 in the afternoon, so not too bad at all.

Barb...thank you for the SparkGoodie. I appreciate your care. I think she was sick longer than people realized, even her, but always thought it was due to her asthma. Today we decided on a bird bath for her garden at her house for her husband along with some glass boxes to etch her picture on for her 3 adult children. It will be hard to replace her for sure.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your co-worker Janine. So sad.
It sounds like you are having some productive days as far as work goes.
Barb, I can't believe any dr. would want her driving as far as she is every day. I hope she was truthful with them.
We met friends for breakfast on Sunday then were home a couple of hours when I suggested ordering pizza and having mom and/or kids over for games. We ended up at my daughter's house so she could bathe the boys and get them ready for school Monday. Yesterday I decided I had time to throw a big pot of soup together (with the help of Bear Creek soup mix) and have the kids over to eat. My daughter picked up my mom after she picked up the boys, and my step-daughter and her fiancée' joined. I made grilled cheese since we got snow over the weekend.
The weather is absolutely crazy. Woke up to an inch of snow on the ground Sunday. Yesterday it snowed hard for a couple hours but melted as it hit the ground. The weirdest part is that 10 miles south of me got 8 inches of snow! It is to be 70 on Thursday then 40s again.

I feel so sad for the politicians that have buried their heads in the sand over Covid. 215,000 people dead is NOT something to ignore! Jeez

Prayers the teacher did okay today.

I worked from home. Two meetings that went very well. I was able to finalize both and get out some meeting invites as well. Not as busy as I would have liked it to be because my email and phone went off throughout the day.

I don't know if I told you all that my coworker passed away last week. She was okay in July, but in August was diagnosed with liver cancer. They were going to start treatment September, but she developed an infection and was dehydrated. She was in the hospital for over 3 weeks trying to get her well enough to have chemo, but they realized her cancer was so aggressive there was little they could do. She was sent home on Tuesday night and passed away early Wednesday morning. She was such a lovely woman, so genuinely kind and passionate about her work. She will definitely be missed in our office.

I won't be into Tyndall until 11 am this morning. I hope that things went well for our problem teacher to get school and get into her classroom. I just feel like this a tragedy waiting to happen.

Covid-19 continues to rise here like there is no tomorrow. The governor's last message on things as all the rural hospitals no longer have ICU beds for these people [and the larger hospitals in bigger towns are becoming inundated] is to say that the health department is doing too many tests. My gut feeling is that she doesn't care if people die, she just doesn't want their deaths chalked up to Covid-19.

Dear Lord Barb! I pray this teacher does not create a worse situation for herself or others. I cannot imagine why she would want to rush so quickly. Her health and the safety of everyone has to come first!

Kim....I pray the surgery happens as scheduled and that it goes well.

I have no idea why I did not log in yesterday! It was a busy day, but I am usually mindful of logging and looking up recipes or something else on Spark. Oh well. I did have a productive day and I worked from home writing drafts for Monday and Tuesday. I need to do some scheduling too.

Problem teacher contacted Cindy and said that she didn't answer the phone because it was dead. I find that hard to believe because all the hospitals in Sioux Falls have these charging stations that have any number of cords that would fit any phone. All she would have had to do was to tell someone to bring in the charging station (they're portable).

Anyway, she is coming back to school tomorrow. She has to wear a heart monitor. She did confess to Cindy that they do think she had another "slight" stroke. They are having her wear the heart monitor because of type of disrhythmia they heard in her heart. Why is she coming back so soon. Does she actually want to collapse in front of her students? She says she is cleared to drive. I can't believe that any doctor would say she is fit to drive. Do they know how far she drives each day to get to and from work. Lord help us all.

The temps have dropped here too and the wind is still whipping.
That teacher needs a dr. who tells her flat out she can't work any longer. She'll probably drop dead at school one day. I just hope she doesn't hurt anyone else when she's out driving.
Saw the orthopedist this morning and I have to have surgery. Blah....He will put a pin in, leave it for 4 weeks, then remove it. After that I can do any activity I can tolerate so that's good. I was really excited when they said they could do it Wednesday. When I went to schedule it the gal said that because I have a cardiologist, I have to see him first SO that is Wednesday. Surgery will be the following Monday, the 26th. They weren't going to get me in until the 29th which is another 2 weeks. I really want to get this done so I can start the healing process. They're squeezing me in and she said it will be late in the day so sorry, you can't eat or drink anything all day. Oh well, if it results in weight loss I can survive. I finally lost weight this week! I had lost 36 lbs, then gained back 17 so I'm working on getting that back off and getting to goal weight....again.

We have had 35 to 40 mph winds for the last couple of days. It is supposed to get colder this weekend. It is the middle of October, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

It is Tutor Day today, so we are done at noon. I think I will just come home and collapse after that.

Have heard that problem teacher will be released from the hospital today. She hasn't told the district if she is coming in on Monday or not. I would imagine she will be in even if she shouldn't be.

Goodness Barb! I hope she decides to retire to take care of her health and not put others in jeopardy!

The wind was whipping here today and took a really large tree down across from my house. The street was blocked and the town was here for hours cutting and hauling away the tree. It did a lot of damage to the street and a retaining wall, but thankfully not to anyone's house or vehicle. Rain is due tomorrow and Saturday is going to be in the 50s. It is never dull weather here in New England.

Both the superintendent and my Uniserv staff servicing this part of the state suggest that. She brought the Association in last year to "protect her" when she was put on a plan of assistance. The Uniserv person came down and looked at everything and basically told her that she needed to get her act together. He also suggested she may want to consider looking into disability. Of course she wasn't having anything to do with that, because at that time, she was saying nothing was wrong with her.

Oh my goodness Barb. I sure remember you talking about her and her issues in the past. She must not be ready to turn her life around because it sounds like she has some control over her health as far as the weight and smoking. You can't do anything if you're in denial. I would think she could go out on disability. She shouldn't be out and driving that's for sure!

Goodness good luck with the foot. Good thing you got medical attention quickly.
This was one for the books yesterday. My teacher who was put on a plan of assistance last year came to school yesterday in some sort of medical state. I wasn't there but was told this by co-workers who were there. It spooked a lot of people. Anyway, my other high school SPED teacher and the social studies teacher were conferring in the hallway when the elevator doors opened and my problem teacher came out of the elevator at a dead run. She was fortunate to hit the wall and rebound against a bank of lockers 6 feet away or she would have taken a header down a flight of stairs. My other sped teacher went to her and tried to keep her from falling on the ground, but was physically unable to keep her standing. The social studies teacher came to help and they got her to the floor. Problem teacher keeps saying she's fine, but she has no trunk control and she cannot keep her head upright. The sound of her hitting the lockers brought several teachers from second floor up to see what the problem was. Since problem teacher was unable to walk to her room Cindy, the other SPED teacher, went into her room and got her rolling desk chair and she and Kevin got her into the chair and pushed it into problem teacher's classroom. Cindy is afraid to leave her alone in the room right now. The social studies teacher says that he will go down and tell them in the office that we may have an issue. After a few minutes she seemed to get control and tells Cindy she needs to use the restroom and would Cindy walk down there with her. Of course the ladies is at least 300 feet down the hallway. Cindy walks beside her and they slowly get to the bathroom. Cindy stays outside to give her some privacy, although there are three stalls in that bathroom. As they head back to the classroom, the social studies teacher later tells me that problem teacher has begun to look better. By the time they get back to the room, the Superintendent comes up and highly suggests that she go over to the clinic (a block and a half away from the school). Cindy agrees to take her in her pickup, unsure that she can even get her into the pickup. By this time the first bell has rung and now what do we do with all the kids. We get all the 1st period SPED kids into Cindy's room and our industrial tech teacher who has a classroom/lab right next to these two teacher's rooms says he will keep an eye on both classroom.

They get her to the clinic, of course this is a problem, because as she shared with Cindy several weeks ago she lost her wallet ABOUT 4 MONTHS ago and hasn't been able to find it. Therefore she doesn't have a photo id, or her medical card, or even checkbook/bank card.
The clinic seeing this woman is not in good shape, put her in a wheelchair, takes her back. Of course since Cindy isn't a relative, she can't go back to the exam room. So she waits to bring our patient back to school. Problem teacher comes out saying that everything is fine and that she needs to go home to rest. That's fine, but she is in no condition to drive the 40 MILES back to her house. She decides she will phone her son to come get her. She can't find her phone, so uses Cindy to call the son. He says he will come and get her. Problem teacher tells Cindy she knows where the phone is and surprisingly it is where she said it would be. Jesse, the son, comes and takes her back home.

A little past noon, I am in the building for the first time and I have been told all of this by at least three people, she calls in. She says she is just fine and will be at school tomorrow. At about 2:30 we find out that the helicopter from Avera has touched down in Parkston, the problem teacher's home town. Cindy has a number of friends in Parkston. She sees me in the hallway and says that she knows that the helicopter has touched down in Parkston and both of us are pretty sure what that means. At 3 pm, the district's sub coordinator informs me that problem teacher will not be back the rest of the week. Guess we were right, the chopper was there to air transport the our problem teacher to Sioux Falls. Lord only knows what this means. Last year she was air-flighted to Sioux Falls because of a stroke which she denied having until this summer when we were having a come to Jesus meeting about her job performance. She is an overweight, diabetic who does not eat properly and smokes. She had a heart attack five years ago and a stoke last fall. Last year she checked herself out of the hospital against medical advice. God knows what condition she is in now. But God must have his hands on her because I truly don't know how she drove from her home 40 miles down a busy two lane highway to get to school, without causing a major accident given the condition she was in when she arrived at school yesterday.

I am sure the saga will continue......

Thanks Janine. It really isn't painful unless I put weight on it. I'm barely taking Tylenol for it. I can't get in to see the dr. until Friday. We'll see what happens then.
Those meetings are so hard. Parents want what they want and don't understand we can't just "give" their child services. Good luck!

I hope the pain lessens for you! Take advantage of time to rest.

I had a parent concern meeting today. Mom wants the kid in 4 days per week but he's a gen ed kid who doesn't qualify per our guidelines. She was yelling and threatening to ask for an out of district placement if we don't get him in 4 days! Threatened me with an ed advocate too. I understand her frustration but our hands are tied! An outside therapist in the meeting stated mom is frustrated and we need to try hard for her son. I quickly informed him that in the last week we've put additional support services in place for this kid.
He's had 2 days of these additional services so far! Give it time to work for goodness sake! I decided on an FBA, although he's fine at school and is only struggling when he's home. We'll see how it goes.

I was hoping 2 weeks, but it looks more like 6. I'll find out more once I get to the orthopedist. It hurts today. I think it was pretty numb yesterday!
Weather turned much cooler over night. At least the sun is shining but it's super windy too!
Have a good week ladies!

Oh no Kim! I am so sorry about your injury! I hope you find ways to rest and stay off that foot. How long does it usually take for a broken toe to heal? I hope to never personally find out but I pray for you that the healing time is short and speedy.

I was in the middle of washing all the clothes I want to post to sell. At the same time I was washing kitchen/living room windows and was just getting water ready to scrub the floor by hand and wipe down baseboards. So, I came out of the laundry room not paying attention and caught my little toe on the post for our stair railing. I only went to urgent care because it was pointing off to the side. Sure enough it's broken and dislocated. I'm in a boot and on crutches and have to see an orthopedist as soon as they can get me in. Dang, I was on a roll with projects! I think I need to practice using crutches because I'm not very good at it. Good thing I work from home and don't go many places! I'm such a klutz!

I am sorry about your loss Barb. It is just unthinkable how the government has not taken a strong stance and insisted on people wearing masks, keeping some place closed, and social distance guidelines more strictly enforced! I have no idea why science has not prevailed over opinions and political stances.

Kim...I agree...it really is not that hard to wear a mask! I have asthma and I wear one every time I go out.

I need your motivation to clean out my room closet! I haven't had the drive to do it but I really just need to do it!

We've had a warm streak this week, but it has been windy. 80s today, then 68 tomorrow, 2 days of low 70s, then 55. That will feel chilly but it's better than winter so I'll take it!
Good luck with the fire drills! Someone told me the little kids follow the guidelines better than the older ones do.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend Barb. We have a mask mandate in Ames but I go to a lot of places where only half the people are wearing them. It's not that hard to wear one. I wish people would just do it.
I cleaned out the closet where I have all my "extra" clothes, meaning stuff that doesn't fit right now. I'm getting rid of a huge pile. We also sold our motorcycle a year ago so I'm selling a lot of my shirts.

Good, maybe there is hope, although it is hard to make it seem serious when our governor won't do anything to urge people to follow guidelines. We are now second in the nation here in SD for a rise in the number of Covid cases. On a personal note, a good friend (one of my husband's former teachers) died on Tuesday because of Covid-19. She was a beautiful person, active in her church and community, a retired home-ec teacher (I have two of her cookbooks) and a devoted grandmother. I am having a hard time with this, because whole thing is preventable. Why do we not see that?

We had 2 fire drills last week at the high school (due to the hybrid model with only half the students in at a time). It seemed like the kids were following the 6 feet guidelines.

We had a terrible storm last night that knocked out power and downed trees and wires. Some schools had to cancel classes because of no power. It is still windy today, but not nearly as bad.

How do you keep everyone safely distanced during a fire drill? Kids so often group up to see their friends and the lines don't always stay spaced.

We were supposed to have a fire drill today, but we had too many subs in the building so the administration thought better of it. The weather was great today. I am sure that they will reschedule it for a day when the wind is blowing at 40 mph. It is South Dakota.

Barb, that's hilarious and unfortunately true.
Taking one of the dogs to the vet this afternoon which works out because my 4:00 student moved to tomorrow.
It's a gorgeous day so I'm spending some time on the deck while we have this fabulous weather. Breezy, but 70s. I'll take it!

Started raining last night and rained all through the night. I don't know how much we got, but it was cool today. It is supposed to be cool tomorrow, but into the 70s as the week goes on. I can deal with that.

Hoping you can find some relief, Janine. I know what you mean. I was in the grocery store last week with my mask on, but I had a sneezing fit. People looked at me like I had pulled a gun out of my purse.

I hope the shots work for you Janine. I have a friend who gets weekly shots.
It's sunny now, but was raining this morning. Only in the 40s though, but it's ok with a sweater. 70s next week! Yay!

Janeybee...that is really hot! I am with Kim and like it around 75. I like fall as well, but it means winter and winter in New England can be rough.

It is cool today but I am still wearing my sandals. I am not ready to give them up yet, but I have shoes nearby just in case.

My appointment with the allergist went well. She wants to retest me for allergies since my last test was over 20 years ago. And she thinks I would be a candidate for weekly shots. Something has to give! I cannot walk around with this post nasal drip and cough all the time. People at the store look at me like I am a walking COVID virus! It is hard to go out right now because of it. Fingers crossed this will be a good course of action with the shots.

Wow, that is hot! I don't need it to be that warm! I'm more of a 70-75 degree person all year long, which would mean moving!
I love fall too Barb. It is going to be chilly all weekend but back to the 70s next week. I'm looking forward to that!
Good luck at your appointment today Janine!

Goodness. I am ready for Fall. This is a great time in South Dakota, I think one of the nicest times of the year. (And frankly the only season of the year where Mother Nature isn't trying to kill you.)

We are supposed to have frost tonight. Maybe we will, maybe we won't. The wind was pretty steady today. We are supposed to have a cool weekend. Well as long is that is all.

I'm wearing pants and a pull over! No sandals today! Next week looks nice so I'm looking forward to that.
My new DIL went wedding dress shopping with her cousin so none of us got to go along. I haven't gone since my other DIL was looking for her wedding to our older son. It's been 6 years. I appreciate her including me since she can only take 4 people.
My student wasn't feeling too bad but he was pretty much banned to his room. At least he has online school, tv, and an X-Box to keep him busy. He can go back on Monday.

It's cool here today as well. The sun is shining bright, but I need a sweater. I am wearing sandals and long shorts, but the air is still cool.

Good luck shopping for the wedding dress Kim! I look forward one day doing this with my daughter.

Chilly here today too and wow, was it ever windy yesterday! I ran a few errands today and have 4 kids to tutor later on.
I'm going wedding dress shopping with my step-daughter on Sunday. That should be fun.
One of my tutoring students is home on lockdown. He has covid. He said he can't taste food. I could use that for a few weeks to get the scale moving again!

It seemed like Fall for real yesterday. Hoping that perhaps they have turned the heat on in the building, but I don't know if that is going to happen. Will dress in layers today.

I can only imagine the number of parents throwing a fit. The gal who gave me mine was great. I didn't feel a thing!
It's much cooler today, high of 59. We have a soccer game at 5:30 so I'm going to have to bundle up because it's windy too! It never fails the wind has to blow when it cools off. That's the part I dislike the most!
I found out last night one of my students was exposed to covid so she's online for 2 weeks. Her mom said I could see her any time during the day. I assumed she would have to "attend" school while it was streaming but it sounds like it will be all video. Her mom isn't enthused. I also want to know how they are going to provide her IEP minutes. She can't afford to keep missing instruction. She's had a new reading teacher every year also, none of which know how to teach Wilson Reading. She's getting some help from another teacher and I think an AEA person is coming in today. Of course, a month of school has already gone by.
I hope you both have a calm, productive week!

Those parents would certainly win with compensatory services if they pursued it.

I will get get my flu shot this week. Our governor has decided that all students attending school in person must have a flu shot. You can imagine this uproar that has brought from parents. Not my kid has become their battle cry. I can only hope people see the importance of this as we head into flu season.

Yes, I couldn't believe the school had the nerve to say that since the parents were paying for me (!) they didn't have to provide services. That really ticks me off!
You're booking way out there but it will feel good to have meetings caught up. I know a lot of IEPs are being rewritten to include both virtual and in person learning to cover what may happen this winter.
It's supposed to hit the mid 80s today but it's about 75 and breezy right now. I'm going to listen to a couple of webinars I signed up for while sitting on the deck. I have to finish them by the 30th. I have 2 to go.
I ran to the pharmacy this morning to pick up prescriptions then did their drive through flu shot. It was super easy and I can check that off the list.
Have a great weekend ladies. We're having the kids over tomorrow for brunch. The house is cleaned except for the kitchen/living room and hubby bought the groceries so there isn't too much left to do.

My October is almost full and I am working on November meetings. I hope teachers can get me their updated reports early enough to get drafts written. We are not able to hold meetings on Wednesdays so I am working on a 4-day work week schedule. it makes scheduling more difficult for sure!

Kim...I hope you are able to get the extra support for your student. That is just wrong to not be providing the services a student needs.

Some kids just wear you out! When I'm tutoring and my one kid starts making noises and talking over me I just wait until he stops. He's catching on. Maybe I'll send him some fidgets. I haven't had the nerve to tell his grandma he most likely has ADHD.
Barb, I know you'll be glad Homecoming week is over. I know some of my students dressed up and there is a game but no parade or dance.
Janine, how are the meetings going? I hope you can get them all knocked out soon.
I found out one of my students was receiving some extra reading help but they didn't provide any extra from March to May since the parents are paying me to tutor! WTH! First, the school should provide services and I only see her once a week. Geez! I told the mom that was unacceptable. She can't even get the teacher to tell her if her daughter is currently getting extra help. I emailed the teacher as well so hopefully one of us gets an answer.
It's going to be a very warm weekend here then things change drastically on Sunday night or Monday. We'll be low 60s and even 58 one day next week. I'm in denial that the warm temps are going to end!

Barb...your testing situation reminds me of one of our school psychologists who tested one of my students recently and was wiped out by the experience. She had to take the rest of the day off because she was so mentally and physically drained from testing him. I think when it is your time God will review that tape and send you right to Heaven! Good luck with the parade.

Working from home today. It is really hard to get myself motivated today. I will, but today is hard.

Today is the end of Homecoming. I feel like we have climbed a mountain. Today is a parade, which I don't think is the wisest of moves, but this is the year the parade was to occur. (A couple of years ago we decided to not do a parade annually due to resources and lack of support.) Hopefully people will be socially distanced along the parade route.

Well coronation was last night. The plan was to give the Royalty Candidates a certain number of tickets, so parents/grandparents could attend. They did do a Live Screen or whatever it's called to broadcast the entire ceremony to the rest of the population. There is no dance. There will be a parade but they are not allowed to have kids throw candy to the people on the street.

Tested a third grade student at Springfield (one of our schools). Lordy, was that an experience. I swear that if I go to hell after my life is done, they will show = me to a room and there will be this kid and I will have to test her through eternity. Wowser.

Got lots of homework tonight because I can't get anything done during the day. Everyone has a "crisis." Most aren't even serious problems, but it is easier to dump it on me rather than solve it themselves.

Maybe you will have cancellations of tutoring some night that will allow you the chance to go see your other grandson.

It was a cold morning, but the sun came out and it is warmer now. I started the day with socks, but they had to go eventually as my feet were hot. Thank goodness for ceiling fans.

I worked in the office today. I was able to get my piles of carryover meetings to a more manageable group of piles that I can understand. I have close to 30 meetings carried over, half from my caseload and half from a colleague who works the grade below me. It is overwhelming for sure, but I will get through it. My October is filling up and I will be happy to get some of the meetings done.

I sure know that feeling of leaving your kids at the airport. That's the worst part of visiting but I'm glad we can do it again, with caution. It sounds like you had a really fun weekend. I know I need to touch base with a few of my teacher friends. They're all back at school and busy but I'm sure we can come up with a time.
I started and ended my day with a walk. It was about 80 today and perfect for walking. I also went to my 3 year old grandson's first soccer game. He wasn't a fan at all. He either cried, sat on the sideline, or walked around when he was in. The kids said he did great at practice the other night. Who knows what was up with him. His brother plays tomorrow night and I won't ever get to go because I tutor every Tues. night. I can't even watch a practice on a Thursday for the same reason. Bummer.

Dinner with my family Friday included both my kids, DIL, daughter's boyfriend, and my dad. It was nice. Saturday we all went (minus my dad) for breakfast before bringing my son and DIL to the airport. I will admit there was an extra long hug for my son at the airport and he choked up a little. I fought hard not to let the tears flow. Sunday I had a surprise visit from my oldest friend who is also my son's Godmother. I wish she had let me know two days before so she could have seen him. It was nice to visit with her.

All this visiting with people reminds me again that we leave these opportunities too often to funerals and weddings. We need to find ways to stay more connected with those we love. I need to schedule video chats with people and make them enjoy face to face time with others and me! I miss seeing my nieces and nephews and their kids. Their kids will never know me like their kids did when they spent every summer at my home, enjoying the pool and playing with my kids.

We're having true fall weather at the moment (60s with nights going into the 30s). It is expected to become warmer later in the week. I actually had to put socks on today! Goodness.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

That will be interesting! Is there going to be a dance or just the festivities during the week?
It's warming up a bit this week, low 80s all week! I'll take it as long as possible. I hope the fall hangs in there for a long time since we'll be stuck indoors for several months.
Janine, hope you had a nice weekend!
