I'd take anything here with a tiny pinch of salt, as this seems like a clearly well-intentioned yet clearly monetized site.

That said, 11 lbs a month is certainly achievable through a good combination of reasonably dedicated dieting and exercise, so it's possible. And the people who do track calories with OCD are quite likely to be the same people who're super concerned about making sure they don't go over their daily quota/get just the right amount of protein/get just the right amount of fats/etc.

I mean yeah, tracking food and posting obviously won't make you loose weight... but I can believe that the correlation exists.

Personally, I've found tracking food to be frustrating. So many things I eat I can't get the exact value for. Or I can go out to a restaurant and get a salad with grilled chicken and some light dressing that's certainly not awful for me, but I have no way to really figure out the info of that dressing. Or some meals at whole foods.... I was able to get the nutritional info on them by e-mailing cusomer service, but it took over a month for them to get back to me. So I sort of stopped tracking food.

I think it's an awesome tool to use very rigorously for like, four days at a time. You can get a good snapshot of your diet that way, and see if you're really missing any nutrients or minerals (or going way overboard on anything). I feel that's more helpful than trying to do it every day, as long as you have a good general sense of what you're eating.

My two cents.

I have to question that data. *Average* weight loss of people interacting with the site at least 4 days/month led to over 11 lbs weight loss a month? That sounds more like a theoretical maximum. I have to wonder about the statement that SparkPeople gave them random user data with "extreme outliers eliminated". I bet they were eliminated anyone who didn't lose enough weight!

In case you didn't see, http://mobihealthnews.com/20433/free-onlin

proves-outcomes-in-peer-reviewed-study/. New research on Sparkpeople found tracking weight and posting on community boards let to 11 pounds more lost per member than those who didn't take such steps. So, in that spirit, thought I'd post this morning.

Its a grey rainy drizzly day in DC, but my goal is still to get out of the house and get active. After all, Spring will be here soon -- there were daffodils blooming last week on the mall.

Cheers all,

Buggle3
