Just do it! Dont worry about what other people think, people see runner that they think are too thin and they look at the weird or talk about them that is their problem not yours.

= ( sorry to hear your shoes didn't work out. I'm new too running, actually just had my first training day today. I am not too nervous about getting new gym shoes but I am horrified about buying the clothing I'll need. I can only imagine the sight of me...ugh! Not looking forward to that. I've never been a runner...or a jogger for that matter but decided that I needed to change my life and running was the way to go so I have registered for my first 5k in September. Because I'm training on the treadmill I'm using my current gym shoes and will be getting my stuff when I get closer to the race and my goal weight. Much luck, hope you find the shoes that are right for you.

Thanks for all your support.

I went running for the first time yesterday, and my shoes really hurt my feet. It felt like they were pinching my heel. So I took them back today and got the other pair I liked. I'll go running again tomorrow and try them out!!

"I'm afraid they aren't going to take me seriously because of my size.

Has anyone else felt awkward about buying running gear because of their size?"

I used to feel really timid about letting people see me run because of my size. I was wrong. I ran my first race, a 10K, when I was 322 lbs and i got so many hi-fives and woo hoos i wish i could have been able to can them for future use. I think you will be a little surprised by how much support you will get or at least professional responses. Cant wait to hear about your race - you can do it.

Way to go!!! Very good about getting shoes they are a step to your success and a VERY important step!!

I think the best saying I ever heard (and have no idea where I heard maybe this team...) was that people are not looking at you because you look weird, but looking at you wishing they could do it! They are many people who wish they could run but don't think they can for one reason or another and here you are going to do it!!

Can't wait to hear how your running is going and your first 5k!!!

You did well!!! I used the Nike+ system and just upgraded to a Garmin Forerunner, but haven't used it yet as I am running on the treadmill. Keep me posted on how your running is progressing!

Laurie-I did go to Running Wild. I just got back!

It was fine. The guy was really nice. I tried on 5 pairs of shoes and settled on a pair of Nikes. I got the Nike + chip to go with it; I'm looking forward to using it. I hope it motivates me.

There was no one else in the store, so that helped my anxiety. I was so nervous, though. I left my apartment and told myself if I was too freaked out to go in, I could just drive past. I hate making decisions based on fear, though, and I'm proud of myself.

Thanks for the support!

If you want to go for a proper fitting and great help, go to Running Wild on Brady Street. They spent about 40 minutes with me and explained the differences in shoes. I also took my current pair and he looked at the wear pattern on the soles. He was able to judge which type of shoe was needed. Have fun!!!

woo hoo - new shoes!! I love new running shoes - well ANY new shoes really!!

I felt the same way the first time I went - it was more of an age thing than a weight thing. I was over (and I guess still am :)) 40 and just starting out - I thought all those kids were thinking "what are you thinking!?!" - but they were supportive and really helped make the experience a good one.

Last time I went with my sister and another friend and we made a day of it - we had a very fun time!!

Let us know how it goes!!

I felt weird at first too because I was so pudgy. I thought they were laughing at me on the inside and thinking, "who is she kidding". BUT the people at my local running store really listened to my concerns, helped me get the right shoes for my feet and weight and have helped me as I slimmed down.

I felt weird at first too, but the people working there were very helpful and after I mentioned my goals there were very supportive and gave me training tips. You will be fine...at least you are not planning on sitting on the couch the rest of your life!

I've never felt weird buying it, but feel weird wearing it. I don't have "runners legs", and when I wear my running shorts/skirts I think people are judging me, but they aren't. And if they are...they should have better things to do than look at my chunky dunky legs. You're making the commitment to get out there and most people that I've come across are supportive. I went specialty shoe shopping when I was 9 months pregnant and the associates were very helpful and I didn't get a weird vibe from them.

Absolutely! And I still struggle with body image issues sometimes at my goal weight. However, I'm guessing that the people at your running store will applaud you for your decision to change your lifestyle, be helpful in finding you the right shoes for your body, and perhaps the store will have some kind of running clinic/group for beginners or they will suggest something like this for you to join. I know the Fleet Feet where I bought my shoes has a Tuesday evening run for beginners every week, and I think they do other group runs as well. I think a lot of running stores do group runs and hold beginner clinics. If you uncomfortable with your salesperson for some reason, either leave and go somewhere else, or ask for a different salesperson. You are the boss- you are the customer!

If you need a training plan in addition to or besides what the running store might offer, try Couch to 5K. A lot of beginner runners, myself included, have used it successfully to learn to run. www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181

I just went a couple of months ago to get shoes and I felt weird too. The guy at the running store even had me get on a treadmill to run so they could make sure that I got what I needed. I felt like a whale, but he didn't even blink. He was nice, polite and put me right at ease when I asked him questions. Honestly, whoever you go to will probably be thinking "way to go" more than "why is she doing this" especially if they're at a sporting store.

I don't win races, but I always cross the finish line. I'm not fast, but I try my best to become faster. I don't have sports endorsements or earn a paycheck, but that doesn't stop me from running. My pace does not define me. Just because "professional" does not precede "athlete" in describing me doesn't make my running any less valuable. I am an everyday athlete; leading a normal life, but with big goals and dreams.
I am an athlete. I am a runner. (runzoerun.com)

I have decided to (once again) commit to running a 5k. I have made plans to run in the past, and I never make it. I always stop because of pain I feel in my legs. Well, this time I'm determined to make it. I hope to run a 5k in April or May.

Today I am going to the local running store to buy shoes, and I am terrified. I feel awkward walking in there and saying I want to start running. I'm afraid they aren't going to take me seriously because of my size.

Has anyone else felt awkward about buying running gear because of their size?
