Hi, I'm Jodee. I have one word to say: Beans! I buy them dry, soak them for 24 hours to start the sprouting process and cook them in a pressure cooker. I love to do pintos, and I make my own hummus from the garbanzos. I also make split pea soup and navy bean soup. It saves me a lot of money and I get great fiber from the beans.

Hi everyone. I turn 50 this month and am trying to develop a permanent healthy lifestyle. I would like to lose a total of 20 pounds by June 21st. So far I've lost 4.2 pounds. My first goal is to lose 5 pounds by the end of this month so I'm well on my way to acheiving that first goal. emoticon

Hello Rita, You are right! The better control we have in the rest of our lives, the better we care for ourselves, our health. Suze Orman preaches that a healthy lifestyle financially will carry over to all the other areas of our lives, including our health.

emoticon I divide up my money after bills by the number of days in the month and try to stay within that daily allowance. If I have extra money, I put it in a different checking account or pay more off on a bill. I am retired so my income is predictable. I dont always stay on track but by participating in this group more/reading the blogs I know I can do better!

I do think better control with a budget carries over to better control of my weight. Can't indulge in everything I want! More discipline is my key to better success.

I save the most on groceries. I shop the sales and plan my menus around them. I also have a store that doubles coupons to $1 so I use alot of coupons.

I've put a small change jar at eye level in my pantry. Tidying up, I found a $5 note. Feels lucky, and seeing it does help me to re-close the pantry door, without eating.

I save on gifts - I make alot of them and keep eyes open for bargains. This year's project is something called Rice Bags. They are heating pad size fannel bags that I have sewed and am filling with rice. When heated in microwave they are so comforting for stiff necks and such.

Also able to add scents to them if want!

Recreation. As a senior citizen on a fixed income, I don't do anything that costs money. Entertainment comes from free library-loaned videos and sitting on the floor with my grandchildren. They're usually more fun than the DVDs. I also spend time trying to finish all the craft projects I accumulated over the years, another no-cost entertainment.

Groceries! Plan menus and only use coupons that really make sense. Eat fresh and include good protein in each meal.

Groceries are the one thing I save the most on. I never buy anything that isn't on sale and that I don't have a coupon for. I will go to the website of the items that are on sale and print coupons for that particular item....that way I get it at the cheapest possible price.

I also have a large garden so we are able to eat fresh and frozen home grown veggies all year long.

My husband is a hunter and a fisherman so we are able to eat Deer Meat and Fish several times per week which cost us nothing.
