This has been a few months .... But I decided "enough" of nail salons and getting nails done .......... (So much $ put out every time you turn around) ............. I decided to stop, and smply keep mine trimmed and neat and I do not miss the frill expense, NOR the pain that often occurred ......... (Money NOT spent is money saved or appropriated to a better place) ........ (Of course, I respect this is an individual decision)

I agree with you ladies on paying cash and spending less. I use cash for groceries and most everything else just so I won't over spend. It has made a difference.

One unique way to save, I go to a sub shop once a week for a chef's salad for lunch. They have what they call a scrap salad for half price. It is made using the scrappy ends of ham and turkey, roast beef, cheese, etc, that they can't put on a sandwich - makes a great salad for less! And as a bonus, when the weather cooperates I walk the half mile to pick it up - saves gas as well as gets in a walk!

I automatically get $1.00 put into my savings account every time I use my debit.
Also, whenever I carry money with me, I never spend the coins (I'm Canadian so we have loonies and toonies here that add up pretty fast). I put them all in my car consol then empy it into a huge water jug. Me and my boyfriend empy it out and roll it all when we're going away for spending money.

"Your biggest challenge isn't someone else. It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs and the voice in your head that yells "CAN'T!". But don't listen. Just push harder. Then you'll hear the voice whisper "can". That's when you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are."

You've hit a big one, PositivePaula8. Paying a quarter of your mortgage payment every week amounts to paying 13 monthly payments a year instead of 12. And the additional payment make a big dent in total time you are paying and the total interest you pay over the life of the mortgage. Make sure, though, that your lender does not charge extra for processing payments more frequently than monthly.

People can do the same thing by adding an additional principal payment to their monthly mortgage payment. Also results in a shorter loan and less interest. Online calculators provided by banks tell the story as you suggested.

We have been paid our mortgage weekly for many years now. (divide your monthly payment figure by four). Also to If you can pay that bit extra each week over and above what your monthly amount that financial institution / bank requires, you will pay less interest over all and pay your loan off much quicker perhaps save years off your loan. There are free mortgage calculators online that you can use to work out how much sooner you will be Home Loan free.

Just more thoughts on this from me. Hope it helps someone. Take care, emoticon

Another thought I just had was cancel your credit card once fully paid off and only use a debit card that way then you can only use money which you have and not spend money on credit cards which incur interest! emoticon

Save a little on home loan interest by paying your mortgage weekly rather than monthly. Don't buy your lunch out, instead take your lunch packed from home. The savings from this can be put into a jar for a holiday or paid as extra off your mortgage to help pay your own off quicker.

AT&T cell phones are costing me $200 a month for four. Two of us don't even have smart phones, and the third is on the cheapest data plan. I found a reseller of AT&T called ting.com, so cheap and uses our existing phones! Anybody else tried it?

Woah, I have been missing for a while! Started new job, then quit new job after 90 days. Sometimes it is just not a good fit. I decided to respect myself and what I stand for. I start new job Jan 28th! Work at home, so no commute!! I will save on gas and clothing. Husband started new job closer to home, saving $200 a month in gas and tolls.

I use SwagBucks as my search engine, and periodically (usually once or twice a day) I get awarded with SwagBucks, or points that can be spent in their store. I shop at Amazon.com alot, so I save up my SB to get $5 Amazon cards (a better deal to get than the higher card options). I've been getting about one card every three weeks or so, and if you get referrals, you can earn SB even faster when they search! If you'd like to use my referral link to sign up, it's: http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/ghotib.

I also use my Amazon credit card to get points back for my purchases that I make. It's 3 points for every $1 spent on Amazon, 2 for gas and groceries (I think, not quite sure on that one), and 1 for everything else. I put as many bills on my card as I can that I can pay off in a month, and watch my points grow! I get about $6/month this way.

It may not seem like much, but this does add up. I estimate I get about $15/month for free, just with using these two items. I've been saving my money for a couple of months now because my sister and I are buying each other surprise gifts for when we reach our weight goals. I just sent my sister's first gift off to her, and thanks to my free money, it didn't cost me a cent of my own! :D

Do you have an iPhone or iPad and want a little extra pocket money? Try the app called "Field Agent", by visiting www.fieldagent.net. I was skeptical at first, of course, but who isn't? I have been a member since February, earning $30-$40 a month by doing little secret shop-type errands. If you are lucky enough to be the first to "accept" an assignment, you have 120 minutes to complete it. Payment is via Paypal whenever you want to cash out. You must have an Apple product and Paypal to use it. Enjoy!

I joined the $ club and do my best to never spend the ones. I also dump my change into my bag and clean the bag out when it gets too heavy. I then put the change into a bank. I usually average about $20.00 in change by the time I empty my purse. I haven't counted the change as a whole for eight years now. I can't wait to see what the change totals. emoticon

I'm glad you like the idea! I'm relying on it for Christmas since I tend to go overboard. I want buy a card for my "Rewards" after reaching the goals that I set. Every time I complete something, I get to add a dollar. For every day that I log all of my meals, I get a dollar or something like that. Then I will load the money up on the card so that I am not tempted to spend it and when I finally reach a milestone or other big goal, I'll have the money set aside to pay for my reward.

@1LADYMYSTIC: That's a really neat idea which could be applied to lots of areas: grocery shopping, eating out, buying birthday gifts - all sorts of money-grabbing episodes which can be covered with gift cards instead of bank debit cards. Set the budgeted amount you intend to spend, invest it in a card for each type of spending, and when the balance is zero in the month, you're through shopping!

This is just a way that I have found to save money since budgeting is not necessarily my strongest skill. I love to get an occasional coffee from Human Bean, but the cost can add up over time. To keep from going too often, I bought a gift card to go there with a set amount of money for the month. Money can roll over if I go less often in a month, which means I don't have to put as much in there the next time. It's good for my wallet and my waistline!

You have probably thought of this one. I am saving thousands by painting my own house! Since I have not found a new job yet since getting back from abdominal surgery, I hired myself to "freshen" the exterior. Great exercise too! I bought paint at 30% off at Sherwin-Williams and am attacking it section by section.

If anyone uses ING for their savings account, you can earn $10 by inviting your friends to join. I've suggested ING to a few co-workers who just had children and by having them sign up through my invitation rather than on their own, I've gotten the referral bonus!

I'd suggest calling the medical facilities and negotiating payments, rather than either worrying about not being able to afford the bill, or worse yet, ignoring it. I tried partial payments once, and after the second bill arrived with an interest charge tacked on, I had to relent and pay up immediately or lose more money in the process.

So nice to see some new ideas on this discussion I started! I just spent Spring Break in the hospital for unexpected emergency surgery. Anyone have money-saving ideas for when the bill comes? Thank God we recently obtained health insurance.

I have been listening to stuff on the iPod classic for this four years of driving.
Books, podcasts, and university classes are all great. It plugs into the speaker system, so no earphones.

@OWNSMALLCLOTHES: a 12-hour day away from home must be quite stressful. Take it easy on the driving: perhaps you can listen to free music CDs or books-on-tape (or whatever passes for that these days) from the Library ... O.K. I know, it must be the iPod, right? Only that usually costs money, and I'm all for free if I can manage it.

Years ago I got our car insurance down by using Esurance on the Internet. They continue to be the lowest price and added home....
I changed the phone from the cable bundle to Vonage and saved a bundle. I may switch to magic jack as they have a plug into router version now and be 20 annual instead of 17 / mo.
I picked the things that seem to surprise me and save for them in sandwich bags with what for and how much written on them.
I looked at all the bills and cancelled some things that were not used much.
I refinanced the house two years ago for a lower rate and a 10 year mortgage.
We don't smoke, are down to two dogs and started a garden.
I have a Prius and drive 500 a week. I will try to slow down, have noticed it is amazing on the mileage if I slow it down. I just get anxious as it is already a 12 hour day away from home.

Hugs,
Dayle

I had never thought of that. Makes perfect sense though. They call us we might as well call them.

I've done that with Directv a few times. Actually, ONE time I called them up and said (no lie) "hi, I'm just making a call to see if you can offer me any better deals at the moment" and they DID..LOL

I figured, they always telemarket me, it was my turn

@Qsusan1 I had the same experience this week. The Cable we left last year, because we wanted better technology and we got a great introductory rate at the time for the new compay, was offering $30 less, and had finally upgraded their hardware, than our current company, so my husband called the current company to see about canceling (ultimately we would prefer to keep the current company, we do like them better, but wanted something less expensive). They lowered our bill $30 for 12 months. We'll revisit a change in a year. All it took was a phone call.

Friday I called my home tech "bundle" provider. The local cable co I left for my current provider is offering a waaaay better deal - $80 per month vs $159 a month for phone, TV and Internet! I told them I am switching and they lowered my bill $30 a month immediately. Point is, technology is getting cheaper all the time.

I don't spend coins. There's a free Coin Star machine at my credit union, and when the container in which I collect the coins is full, I bring it in there. I usually wind up with anywhere between $20 and $40 which I convince myself I wouldn't have had had I not saved the jingly money. Now, my only trick is to put it in the savings jar instead of spending it on food!

Tried something new - driving slower. I commute 50 miles per day. By driving 55 (instead of 65-70) my tank of gas lasted one entire day longer. Not bad! I only did this in the evenings, by the way, and it was after rush hour traffic was over. Just turn on the satellite radio and try to relax...

Save money on daily shower cleaner. I am tired of buying those expensive refills, so I put about a half cup of bleach in a quart spray bottle and filled the rest of the way with water. Works great! Sprayed down the shower lightly, any mildew disappears too. Cost less than 10 cents.

I saved $120 on gas in January, $100 from a gift card from redeemed credit card points! Our local Publix offers $10 off a $50 gas gift card from time to time when you spend $25 on groceries. Did that twice in January, plan to do it again this week. emoticon

I am a total proponent for Groupon! I have saved so much money on buying Half off coupons and using them to purchase gifts, cards, toys ect..Yesterday I used a groupon for bread and ended up with 6 loaves which I popped in the freezer for another day, and treated myself to frozen yogurt. Also, if you shop at BJ's you can use their coupons (or print then off their website,) and use manufactures coupons. So you can save a decent amount depending on the coupons.

Get free quotes on your car insurance. If you can find one that is lower than you are currently paying, usually your company will match or beat it. I saved a lot of money by investing that 45 minutes!

I unexpectedly saved $20 a month by updating my commuting miles driven on our auto insurance! (Of course this does not work if mileage goes up ;-D )
I challenge myself to save at least $5 a day through trimming this and that, or selling something small. Recently turned in one cable box we did not use much ($7 a month).
Please share non-conventional ideas?
