I live in Monticello home of Robert Allerton Park. This is a great park to hike in or run on trails. I also love to go hiking in Southern Illinois at Giant City Park which is located in the Shawnee National Forest. emoticon emoticon

I live in southern Illinois. Our winters are much more mild that in northern Illinois. I plan on walking and running outside mostly all winter. I am already getting set with cold weather running gear. The worst time for me is usually mid December to mid February. I am wondering how this winter will be for me know that I am exercising outside nearly every day.

I think camping sounds pretty good too...my best idea for winter these days is hiding from it. (I hope that doesn't make me sound like too much of a party poop, lol)

My kids have been doing a lot of fun stuff that involves frisbees and chasing each other with snowballs lately. That is a winter fun and fitness idea...

Eagle watching around the Starved Rock Dam and Starved Rock State Park. Pretty interesting gets you outside. Matthiessen State Park has cross country skiing on the weekends and some holidays. Probably would have to call first but do have some trails for that. 815-667-4868. Utica has some nice little shops to walk around and enjoy.

We have been discussing that here as we plan our family New Year's fun. Here in the Quad Cities, we have "Snowstar" for local skiing and tubing. Our local fitness centers are fun and there are a couple of parks where people do cross country skiing. We have a sports center for year round ice skating. Don't forget the idea of checking into a hotel and using their gym/ pool etc...

Winter challenges us all. I am looking forward to checking out this thread as others share good things. Winter is what we have in order to have our beautiful spring, summer and fall with lovely harvests . I know people who are winter babies--I'm just not one and the more weight I lose, the colder I feel.

Some of the state parks in your area might have trails cleared . . .

I'm guessing you're in the Champaign/Urbana area. I'd suggest cross-country ski trails, maybe some snowshoeing areas and decent hiking areas when the snow and ice melt. Check out any forest preserve, park district or state parks near where you live.

If you're closer to the city (UIC maybe?), I bet there are a few park-like places with trails to hike and/or ski.

What is available on your campus? When I lived near Loyola University in Chicago, we had a very nice student fitness center with indoor track as well as an outdoor track and a lot of lakefront to explore. Wish I had that now!

Good luck to you.
