It is a great book. I read it about 7 or 8 months ago. Quite a while back Lots I also love that slow running is okay and you're never too big.

I have this book, as well. The thing to remember is that you need variety in your workouts. If you do the same old same old, your workouts won't be as productive.

This is why good running plans have a combination of going for certain amounts of time during the week, with a long run on the weekends, and some cross-training (strength, swim, bike, resistance, etc.) in-between, with 1-2 rest (and I mean rest) days. This is to "trick" your body, challenge your muscles, which challenges and your metabolism for better efficiency - e.g. fat burn, as well as makes your heart stronger.

While long slow distance runs are good, and it IS okay to be a slow runner, speed intervals and hills strengthen you and help improve your pace. All this body trickery builds muscle - which replaces fat.

Let's not forget Walkers! Some folks prefer to walk; same principles apply. I train people to walk a half or full marathon (besides, walkers always know how they're going to finish - walking!).

So, good book, good information. Follow whatever running/walking plan you prefer. Just make sure you are consistent and change things up regularly.

Have fun!

Has anyone read this book, "Run Your Butt Off"? I'm most of the way through reading it (though I'm not following its running plan, at the moment) and it has been very nice to find out that running slow really is OK, that you're never too big to run, and that there are accounts of other people out there who, after no interest in sports, have turned to (and begun to enjoy!) running!

There are also great formulas for figuring out how many calories you're burning, how many calories you need in a day, etc. Personally, I love letting SP's calculators tell me that, but knowing a little of the math behind it is also good for me.
