A little late for this season but I found the great video from runners world magazine. I shows how to screw hex screws into the sole of you shoes to give you traction. Haven't tried it yet but I will.

I think there are different models of yaktraks. I have had some that fly off even when I'm walking. We are getting snow (finally) even as I type, and are supposed to get more in the next two days.

Thanks for the responses. Seems like Yaktrax are the way to go. I have a pair from a few years ago and didn't have alot of luck with them. They kept popping off my shoes. I am going to revisit them and see what I can do.

Yaktrax and careful layering kept me running outside in Chicago last winter. I'd go crazy trying to do a long run on the dreadmill. ;) Give Trax a try; you'll be a little slower than usual, but it's worth it to go running in a winter wonderland. Happy running!

Snowshoeing is good exercise, but you need even more snow than you do for cross country skiing. I don't run on ice either, but I will go for a brisk walk. i have a neighbor who runs in yaktraks. Have you tried those? I walk in them, but I'm leery of running in them.

It is getting colder here in NE Ohio and I always dread giving up my running. It isn't the cold. I know how to layer and go outside but when the snow hits I can't keep my footing on the ice. I find myself indoors trying things like Wii Fit Plus or indoor machines but hate not getting outside. I try CC skiing and love it but again can't do that every morning. Does anyone have suggestion how to get my half hour run in everyday during these icy conditions?
