I can't believe that the month is almost over. This has been a good challenge for me. How about the rest of you. As we near October we are entering a time of year that can really wreck havoc on all our plans. Stay strong and firm. When you slip up, keep going forward.

Day 10. I've been at a training all weekend and did pretty well, until.....yesterday when I stopped before coming home. I was tired and didn't think about the fact it was a mealtime. I caved and bought some cookies to try and ate the whole thing. Grrrr.
But, today, I'm back on track!

Day 3 is going strong. Made some soup from the book. Tweaked it, but it sure was filling!

One hint for anyone following this challenge. Part of the Back to Basics approach that can be helpful is focusing on how you are doing your diet or plan. I'm sticking pretty close to the book, using recipes and menus to guide me. I think its paying off.

A good start day. I was able to say no to temptation when I wanted to get some of my favorite cheat foods. So, far, so good.

Today, is my first official start day. I haven't had much time to think about what I'm doing and preparing. It really takes having your mind prepared. I've been eating pretty well this week, but as of today, I'm starting with focus on a program. I've found in the past starting on a weekend when I can focus on food and making the right food is good for success. So, today I start.

My program is going to be South Beach with elements of 17 Day Diet and also always running in the background Sonoma. The reason for South Beach is that if I started with 17 Day Diet, I'd fast forward to Cycle 2. I exercise daily and I need more food. Also, the biggest difference between 17 Day Diet and South Beach is beans in Phase 1. I have some hummus and want to start making soups, but otherwise, it's pretty much the same.

I can relate. I work four long days, two nights. Then the fifth day I either have meetings, appointments or things happening with my kids. Keeps me busy. I went to Lean Cuisine Salad Additions this summer for quick salads without having to go someplace and buy a salad or have prepared salads on hand. I have several in the freezer still. I also use some frozen dinners. With Fall, I make some of my own frozen dinners and make soups. Before my family moved to where I work, I commuted 3 hours one way. I would make egg quiche and freeze it in individual portions for quick breakfasts. Right now, my husband likes to make me breakfast. If he can't I make a smoothie with 1/2 yogurt and 1/2 milk and frozen fruit. I make sure I have a good supply of yogurt to take to work and I keep some things in the freezer at work for something when I'm caught without food. Planning is key to working and wanting to eat right.

Thanks but I work 36 hours a week and volunteer 2 to 3 evenings and half a day on Fridays so it's not so much organization (which I struggle with) but survival - if I don't plan it and pack it I end up eating junk food sometime during the course of the day.

Overslept this morning so no lemon or exercise but at least breakfast, lunch and snacks were all ready to go.

So true. I tend to dwell on what I did wrong instead of what I did right so I will start to work on that right now. I finished strong yesterday - did my exercises (morning and evening, both in the evening) and had all non starchy vegetables with my meal and even remembered my second probiotic serving (vanilla yogurt w cocoa powder - sounds terrible but hits the spot when you have a chocolate craving).

This morning I managed to crawl out of bed for a 15 min exercise session and remembered the lemon water - I never did like that part - any suggestions - can you add a tea bag to make it a little more appealing?? Maybe I'll try that tomorrow morning.

Anyway Breakfast, Lunch and snacks are planned just have to figure out dinner.

Good start. Remember that the 17 Day Diet is based on the idea that you keep moving forward, regardless of how you did. I need to remember that as I'm struggling to get started.

This is day one of 17 day diet phase one - I wish I would have prepared more.

I forgot about the lemon water this morning and with this being the first day of school in our area, and after an exhausting weekend I didn't get any exercise in this morning but other than that so far so good - just need to figure out whats for dinner and when I will get the exercise in.

Wish I could have weighed myself but I stepped on and the scale flashed back and forth between 107 and 117 (either of which, if true, would make me extremely happy but unfortunately neither is close so I will try to make it to the store this afternoon for a new battery and try again tomorrow.

Well, lunch kind of put me back on vacation, so tomorrow with back to work, I'll get on track with this.

I've been doing 17 Day Diet, but I also do Sonoma. I know it sounds weird, but I have a hybrid approach. Right now, I've been struggling with the idea of going back to cycle 1, which is very restrictive. Been thinking about returning to South Beach Diet and doing a weird combination of the three. Okay, not so weird since they are similar.

Glad to see everyone getting into this. I think it will help with this season we are starting. There was an earlier question about how long this challenge is going to last. I would hope we can keep the momentum going through all of Fall and to the end of the year, but as our recovery friends say, One Day at a Time.

Great questions.
Most of us are on different programs with different requirements and time spans. This is a place to talk about how you are doing. You can post your weight here in your post. The challenge is for September, but for most of us, it will continue. The inspiration came after reading an article about weight loss. The first thing you need to focus on is diet and food. That's mostly what this challenge is going to be about. But, some of us exercise and so we'll be mixing it with exercise. I want the challenge to continue since this is a difficult time of year. I would like to see us continue into October, November and then December, but first let's see how September goes.

The bottom line is do your preferred program. Focus on the specifics. Read the book, etc. Stay true to the diet for a month. Talk about your diet here and how you are doing.

About weight tracking. I weigh daily. Some weigh weekly. Some not that often. Do what you need to do or what you prefer to do.

Hope this answers your question. Go to the first post for some other specifics.

I've been thinking that I need to do the 17 day diet again since I both lost weight and felt great the one time that I followed it closely.

We are going to have a September Back to Basics Challenge. The challenge is going to focus on your diet to start with and how you are eating. We all are doing different programs or a combination of programs. And we all have different weight loss and health goals. So, this is pretty general.

1. We will start on September 1, 2 or 3 depending on what works for you. September 1 is Labor Day.

2. Follow your diet or program as strictly as possible. If your diet has a detox phase, wave, or cycle, start there. For example: South Beach has a Phase 1 where you eliminate all grains, or 17 Day Diet has cycle 1 where you eliminate almost all carbs. Sonoma Diet has wave 1 where you cut back on carbs. There might be others, but with starting at the beginning, you can focus on the right way to eat which in all these diets is the basis for your eating later on. If there is a book or program guide, follow it religiously. If you are doing Weight Watchers or Sparkpeople, go back to the beginning materials to review. That's the back to basics portion of our challenge. Get back to learning your program all over again.

3. Exercise moderately if you want to or already exercise.

4. We might do some food challenges along the way.

I think that's all we are going to focus on to start.

Preparation for the Challenge (before we start).
1. Begin to think about what you are going to do. Make your plans.
2. Start reading your book or guide.
3. If there is a kitchen purge, do it before or on September 1. You may want to clean the refrigerator and pantry, too.
4. Menu planning and grocery shopping.

I'll start posting conversation starters as we are getting ready for this challenge and then throughout the challenge.

Let's have a great challenge!
