Denise Austin has a book that I'm reading. Side Effect Skinny. I love her since she is the same age I am. She talks about some of the challenges we at this age.

Wondering if there would be interest in a September Kickstart Challenge. At least a couple of us here do 17 Day Diet. This idea came from one of the 17 Day Diet blogs I subscribe to. But, for us this will be with any program you follow to lose weight or manage your eating.

Challenge:
September 2 or 3 (after Labor Day Weekend) start your diet. If you do a diet with a detox stage, level or cycle, or wave or phase, start with the beginning on that day. If you do Weight Watchers of Sparkpeople or another diet, do a type of back to basics. The idea is to make September and the start of our seasonal Fall a time to get back on track with your diet. Focus on your diet and eating. Do exercise if you wish, but focus on your eating to start with.

What does everyone think of the idea? You can start with September 1 if you would like, but I thought after Labor Day might be better for some.

Some tidbits from the new Health magazine that arrived today.

"If you need to kick start weight loss, focus on diet."
You will lose more by focusing on a structured diet and not trying to make too many other changes too quickly.
"If you need to reach your goal weight Focus on diet and some exercise."
After you've lost some weight combine dieting with regular exercise. Combination of dieting and moderate exercise yields the best results.
"If you need to maintain weight loss, Focus on exercise."
Exercise will increase your odds of keeping weight off.

Diet mistakes women make:
"ODing on protien"
"Skimping on veggies"
"Having just juice for breakfast"
"Overestimating weight loss rate"
"Slacking on shut eye"

Exercise mistakes women make:
"Considering workouts license to binge"
"Underestimating how much time you have"
"Always diong the same routine"
"Ignoring weights"
"Giving in to your energy drain"

You can read the magazine to get more information. Good stuff.

I'll post a challenge in the next message based on some of this.

Another thought after 50. Less focus on the scale and more on how you feel and how your clothes fit. And remember the non scale victories.

Great ideas. I know this is a problem many at our age have.

JSimmon1: The 17 Day Diet is a great lifestyle plan, but I find I do better as I get more healthy carbs in my diet. Love cycles 2 and 3. You might want to check out the 17 Day Diet Gal Blog at 17ddgal.blogspot.com/ Great ideas and recipes.

LEILAWKS1: Great ideas.

Overall at this age, we may have to change some of our expectations and celebrate smaller losses. Also, we may have to change up our exercise more and not get in a rut. Another issue can be injuries.

Thanks - I have been trying to shake things up with my workouts instead of doing the same thing everyday.

But I find that the older I get the less my body tolerates the simple carbs - breads, pasta, and yes (for me at least) wine - so I'm trying to find lots of great veggie side dish recipes. I think I really need to do the 17 day diet again.

Cindi,

Things that have helped me to get the scale moving is to TOTALLY shake things up. It will "re-wake" your body.
You may need to eat a couple hundred extra calories one day, then go back to normal. Are you feeding your furnace/body enough? Less is not always better.
Food honesty check time, like Debteveldahl mentioned. Are you accurately counting cream in your coffee, condiments, everything?
Change up your exercise. Instead of walking go do a zumba ( silver sneakers) class. Any exercise that uses different muscle groups than what you are presently working. More cardio. Weight lifting is important at our age. Start at 15 mins work yourself up to 30 mins. A day.
You can push past this plateau. . . Just keep walking forward.

I get the scale to move by moving myself and weighing and measuring everything that goes in my mouth. It's the only way I get results. emoticon
