Sophiamae- I am sorry that your dog has been abused in the past, but I am happy that she is in your loving care now. How is she doing now, and how long have you had her?

I plan on taking my Olive for a walk today. We have only been on one walk technically and she is doing so good on the leash. I have been training her since I first got her and I followed some advice on the leash training and she is now ready to walk with me. Wish me luck!

She pretty much has forgotten it. She has allowed me to cuddle with her and had given me kisses. She trusts me and no one else at this point. Hopefully next time it won't be so stressful for all of us!

Sophie, that sounds like a nightmare vet visit. I've had my share and it will pass. Good idea about getting a female vet instead of a man. It might make a BIG difference. I hope your little girl forgets and the next time she doesn't give you such a hard time. It's awful to think that she was abused that badly that she still doesn't trust yet. maybe putting her out first would be a better approach for her. Poor you and poor her! Hug her for me. emoticon

I am so sorry Sophie has such a bad time at the vet's. I don't know what I would do if Ranger and Ellie were like that. A lot of times it is my mother that takes them in while I'm at work. It is hard enough for her that Ranger is not good on a leash.

I was going to write this yesterday, but I was exhausted and not sure why....

So I took Sophie to the vet for her annual checkup. I told the tech I would need a muzzle as Sophie is not good with strangers as she had been abused at one time. She likes some people but not others, I didn't want to chance it.

While the dr was listening to her heart and lungs, she growled. When the dr tried to get a blood sample, she struggled to get free from our holds and she growled some more and then whined when he stuck her with the needle. She got really upset and struggled even more.

The vet told me to hold on to the back of the muzzle to make sure it was tight. He tried sticking peanut butter on her tongue that was hanging out to try and get her mind off of what was going on. While I am holding her and she was struggling, she got out of the muzzle and started biting. I got bit on the hand and wrist. She didn't break the skin but it left bruises. She turned really ugly. I saw that she had bit her own tongue as I could see blood in her mouth. That probably really got her going. The vet did sneak another shot and tried to get the bordatella (spelling?) up the nose which didn't quite make it. I was so embarrassed by her reactions because this vet thinks I need to get a new breed and I've had many issues with cockers, but yet he knows I can handle the breed. I was a little upset with her for biting me, but I could also she where she was getting this reaction. She probably felt like she was cornered, being held by 3 people and being poked. She bit her tongue and that hurt and she probably doesn't like men.

Next time I am going to ask to see if I can give her a sedative before I take her in and ask for one of the female vets to see if that would make a difference and better experience for her.

She is fine now and has forgotten about her ordeal yesterday. Lucky dog...she also lost about 6-7 lbs!

My dogs have now figured out how to dig under their fence to get out. When Isaac gets home I think we will have to run an electric wire a little off the ground to make them quit. If we put boards down Ranger chews them.
I got most of my garden planted last week. I hope to finish it tomorrow when I am off work.

So I finally planted a couple of tomato plants. I put tomato cages over them and then put some fencing around them because Murphy loves tomatoes. I cannot keep him away from them. So in doing this it was a big open invitation for him to get through the fencing and check things out. I took the hose to him. Didn't bother him until I turned it on a little harder! He went flying out of the tomato garden! No matter what I do, he will find a way in to get the tomatoes....Little stinker!!

It is finally warm weather. I am working so many hours it is hard to find time to things around the house including walking the dogs. When I am tired like tonight I will let them play in the yard while I water all the new trees and the garden.

Poor Rex can't move so well anymore, so he was a very good subject for the shot. He always was a ham though. I do have some other photos of him when he was younger and thinner, but I haven't scanned them into the computer yet. n I should. I agree... it is agood day when my eating is under control, and a walk too!!! Good for you!! emoticon

I'm having trouble getting a good picture of my dog, he is black and tan, but mostly black. Even just trying to get a shot of his face it's hard to see his eyes.

Well I had scary moment this morning with my dogs. I was on the phone and Sophie was carrying on about something and I couldn't see her in the yard. Finally she and Murphy came out from behind the shed chasing a HUGE opossum. One of the grabbed it at the neck, but it got away and around the shed they went again. This time it got behind some fencing I had leaning against the shed. By this time, I was outside, in my robe no less, trying to grab the dogs by their collars. The opossum was not playing dead, but kind of jumping forward with its mouth open and hissing. Scary looking creature! I was afraid that the dogs would get bit or I was going to bit. Finally I was able to get both dogs and haul them back to the house. I am assuming the animal is living under my shed. I don't know where it disappeared to after that. Anyway, I looked both dogs over and it appears neither were injured in anyway. Thank God!! Hope the opossum is gone now!!

Not Rex the dog, but my high maintenance, prissy little"can't get my feet dirty" China Doll cat killed a baby bunny yesterday and brought it IN the front door to show me. I wished I had seen her go after the poor thing before she killed it. I was a bit upset all day! Rex stopped chasing things 3 years ago.

Sophie caught a baby squirrel last year. She hasn't caught any since, but has come pretty close! She really hasn't been interested in the rabbits. Murphy is definitely the bird dog, he's gotten plenty of birds over the years...usually babies just out of the nest. I just don't like the idea of killing defenseless animals that haven't even opened their eyes yet, but I know that his Murphy's instict to do so...

Unfortunately hunting is what spaniels were bred for.
Ranger and Ellie are always getting rabbits if they are loose. So far they have not gotten a squirrel although they try.

I always laugh at Murphy when he farts. He turns around to see what tickled him! He's clueless!

Murphy was a "hunting dog" this weekend....he killed a bunny! There was only one in the nest so at least he didn't kill 6, like he did last year!! The nest was in the dog pen and those parent rabbits really had it hidden from view but not from dog nose!! I wasn't really happy with him yesterday, but what can I do! emoticon

The vet said there was no way to know what caused the infection. It could have been our water.
Our well flooded and I knew enough to buy water for the puppies but I thought the older dogs could drink it. They are always drinking in the ditches. Both Ellie and Ranger started having really soft stools so I started buying water for them too.

I'm so glad to hear Ranger's back to being a wiggly-worm. Did the vet say what caused him to be so sick? Was it an infection?

Who me? I would NEVER spoil a dog! Well . . . . Lol!

My mother picked Ranger up today from the vet's while I was at a seminar for work. Ranger is his same old wiggly self.
My mother felt sorry for him so she gave him an Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich.

Hi JROTC...haven't seen you post in a while that I know of. Hope all is going well. Can't wait to see your new puppy, I assume you will post new pics.

The Easter Bunny brought new rope toys to Murphy and Sophie yesterday...they haven't played with them yet. Not to their liking I guess. Well when they get bored enough, then they will play with them.

Hope Ranger is doing ok and will be coming home soon!!

Happy Easter everyone

We went to the early Mass this morning because everyone is coming here today. We will have an egg hunt but may have to do it in the front so Riley doesn't "find" and eat all the eggs with candy in them.

My daughter has a new black lab puppy, Jake that will come also. His first holiday with the family :)

We are getting a new puppy in two weeks. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Duncan. He will be ten weeks old then.

I'm so sorry about Ranger. I will say a special prayer just for him. It is so hard to be without our loved one(s). Especially when they're sick. Dogs are indeed family.

Yea, my dogs know all gone, but sometimes they hold out to see if I will give them another treat! Lol! On their carrot slices they have to see the bag is empty!

Chance also knows sit, down, stay, speak, shake (he's a lefty), no and come. Someone really loved this dog and was a much better trainer than I. He's my sweet obedient boy.

Happy Easter everyone! I gotta get in the shower!

Blessings,
Vicky

I had to take Ranger into the vet today. I left him there for the weekend. His temp was 105 and he whimpered every time the vet touched him. She thinks he is fighting a bacterial infection. She gave him an antibiotic cocktail and rimadyl for the pain. She will let us know tomorrow how he is doing. I'm going to miss him tonight but he is better off there where it is quiet.

That is ok...

Here is another think one of my dogs understood. If I was eating something or giving treats and said "all gone" and showed my empty hands, he would walk away. He knew there was nothing more to get.

Took the fur kids for a walk at the park down the street. I walked about a mile very slowly and they are hard to walk with, not very good on a leash when they are together. They are both out for the count now and I am not far behind. I'm tired!!! I live near right on Maumee Bay, where Lake Erie and the Maumee river meets and we watched a ship go out to the lake and watched the bald eagle fly to his nest. I am sure they are sitting on some eggs as it is their time to do so. (or I hope they have eggs this year). I also had a surprise visitor to my yard today. I had a what I think was a golden crowned kinglet...must have been passing through.

That's funny! Isn't it strange that they get these "rituals" and are so faithful to them. I love how Murph will change spinning directions!

I have another story about Murphy. He started this with his "brother" Joey who is no longer with us and now he does this with his "sister" Sophie....It is just one big game for him.

When I put their food down, and he does this everytime, he will stand at his bowl and lick it around the edges while Sophie chows down. He then stands there and will bark and growl at her. She growls back or gives a very high pitched yap. This goes on for a while and he gets louder. Once Sophie is done eating her food, then he eats his food. I don't know why he does this, but he does. I get a chuckle everytime he does this. He makes such a big deal about it. She will eat his food if he doesn't, so I am assuming he is "protecting" his food.

Ellie burying the remote and the Easter egg story are so funny. I also have a brown n white English Cocker and he is a hoot! He's an adopted 3yo and constantly has his nose and head into everything laying around i.e., boxes and bags. He loves to drop his ball behind things where he can't get it and then barks til we get it for him and of course, play with him. Very manipulative! It's funny how his toys "accidently" return to the same places when we are distracted from playing ball!

Ellie, my gundog cocker spaniel has to date caught two pheasant, a pidgeon and a baby rabbit! All the critters died, probably from shock and being shaken. Ellie carried her prizes elegantly to show off her skills. Hmmm. What can you do, this is what she was reared for.
We go to gundog training twice a month in the summer and Ellie loves it. I dare'nt tell them about her critter trophies though!

How cute about the dogs with the Easter eggs!
It is so sad when the baby wild critters are killed. My mom used to have a Siamese cat that would take the baby bunnies into the house and try to mother them. They always died almost immediately. I think they died of fright.

They can be sneaky little stinkers, can' they!!

My dog finds, literally, the easter bunny...bunnies. I've had a rabbit nest in my yard and whether it is the same one or not you would think they would know there are dogs around. My dog has found a couple of nests and killed the babies the last couple of years. I get mad at him, but it is their nature. I am surprised I have seen one yet this year. emoticon I call him my bunny killer.

The other day 2 of our 2-legged girls went out to play on our porch and they spied plastic Easter eggs strewn throughout the inner fenced in yard. They were all excited because they thought I put them there. I realized what happened and went out to explain. The girls brought their eggs home from a hunt at church and put their brown paper bags on the couch. Our 2 4-legged girls took the bags out through the doggy door and must have had a field day trying to open them and spread them throughout the yard. Most were filled with stickers and erasers and some had candy. It really looked like someone had set up an egg hunt. Fortunately, no eggs were broken into and the story had a funny and happy ending.

We had a liver and white springer when I was a toddler. Her name was Rusty. Then it has been cockers ever since. My sister would like to get a springer as there are a couple that live down the street from her and she always points them out. Right now she is very much a cat person so...we shall see!

Ellie and Ranger are both Springer Spaniels. Ellie is liver and white. Ranger is black and white.
We just delivered the last of their 9 puppies on Friday evening. We already have orders for 6 puppies from their next batch.
Ellie is very, very smart. We had gotten a shock collar for her because she absolutely would not mind. We were staying with my mother at the time and she has about 4 remotes by her chair. Isaac had put the shock collar remote on the spot. Ellie must have buried the shock collar remote. We never have found it and we completely tore the house apart looking for it.

I have to make sure my gate at the driveway is closed and locked. Murphy will escape if it is open. He has done this on occasions through no fault of my own, but he is quick and doesn't know his come command very well. Sophie has never escaped and she is pretty good with the stay command.

Murphy doesn't have any special tricks, but when I tell him down (to lie down), he plops down hard. I always get a kick out of that. Sophie will spin, like she is chasing her tail. I can give her a hand signal and she will go around and around. I can tell her go out the other direction and she will. She also has a "deformity of sorts"--her tongue is too big for her mouth. It is always hanging out. It does give her character and makes her look a little silly. At times I feel sorry for her because her tongue will dry out... I hate dry mouth.

My Joey, who passed away 2 yrs ago, was a big English CS. He weigh 60 lbs. I often thought maybe he had Springer Spaniel in him since they are a bit bigger and he had a spring in his step...hence his name (a baby kangaroo plus the character Joey off of Friends). He loved to eat and was very food aggressive. I could never get him to lose much even with feeding him veggies with his dry food as a filler.

If Sophie starts a doggie diet site, Chance will be her first team member. He is a big Am. Cocker but is about 10 lbs overweight. He's my big baby Huey. He has also been adopted and is about 8yo. He is very mellow and likes to sleep alot and do tricks for treats even when it's not Halloween. His cutest one is roll over. With his size, if he thinks he might not be able to make it over without running into something, he does a happy dance spin to move over a bit and then rolls over. It's like two tricks for the price of one. His reward is carrot slices. He loves them. Besides the basic commands, he can also hold a treat on his nose, flip it and catch it. These are not anything unusual, but are cute AND he came already trained. He gets into nothing. I can leave a plate of food on the floor and he will not touch it. No problem w wastebaskets either. I have always been able to let him outside w/o a leash or a chain or a fence and he would stay where I could see him. I don't know what's gotten into him the last couple weeks but he's been sneaking off. Once I was sitting outside, he was laying in the grass. The sun felt so warm and I closed my eyes and tilted my head back. When I opened them, he was gone! I don't want to put him on a chain. Do you think it's just the time of year?

Thanks for any ideas!

Vicky

first, I have 2 fur kids, Murphy who just turned 7 and Sophie an adoptee, which are not sure of her age but I put her at about 4-5. I chose her bday as her adoption date. Good as any! Both are completely spoiled. They beg and usually get their way when sleeping on the bed, but they are hogs about it.

I had spaniels all my life and will probably have more in the future, although my vet thinks I should find another breed with all the trouble I've had with the last 2 predecessors. One had all the eye, ears, and skin issues. She died of cancer at a young age. The other, Joey, lived a few years longer, but had glaucoma in which he had to have is his eyes surgically removed. He passed 2 years ago due to congestive heart failure. He was my best boy! I miss him to this day. He had attitude!

Today they are trying to get my attention while I am on the computer. I was out and about visiting my niece as she is about to deliver a baby any day now, so they haven't had much attention today. Can't wait for my new great niece. They were discussing middle names to go with Lydia. We got some pretty good laughs with some of them. We told them that "remember the kid has to live with this name"! My mom (great grandma) is hoping the baby will be born on the 8th as it is her b-day!

...well back to the furkids....I am hoping to get Murphy a little more trimmed up. I need to work on his legs. Sophie needs a trim too and both need their nails done. I bought a PediPaws nail trimmer a while back ago, but haven't used it yet. Should be fun to try it.

Next I need to get Sophie on a SparkDog Diet....do they have their own SparkPage...maybe they should!!!

Wow! We're all over the place here. Wouldn't it be nice to have one place to just chit chat like old neighbors? Get to know each other? Share what our "children" are doing or not doing? Well, here it is! Our own backyards. Let's share! (Us ppl lovers have to stick together! Woof!)

Blessings,
Vicky
