Planted head lettuce, leaf lettuce and 2 types of spinach today. Went out to water and discovered red ants in the bed, not sure if they are stealing the seeds, little buggers! Hopefully they will leave some for me. emoticon

Fall plants would be spinach, lettuce, onions, garlic. It really depends on what growing zone you are in. Check Farmers Almanac for your zone.

We found a raised bed frame in the Spring but didn't have the time or money to add that to the one we already had. We are going to use it as an herb garden. But! We have a 4 by 4 plot raised bed. We also have containers. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have a really nice garden. Have you tried planting onions, they can grow through the winter.

I had not thought of a fall garden. Maybe I can plant some greens along side our deck...maybe beets and turnip greens and then fry the turnips when they are done. I had never tried fried turnips until an older lady from our church told us about them. I hated turnips but decided to give them a try since everyone was talking about how good they were. They were sooooo good!!!! You fry them like cottage fried potatoes.

This summer I was able to do tomatoes, squash, and green beans here in the city. I put the green beans in my mom's flower bed where she had had glads planted but they must have been killed out this past winter. It is a long flower bed so I planted green beans with a package of summer squash at the end of the row. I put artificial flowers in front and no one even knows the beans are there. LOL

The beans grew like crazy and we have been having green beans about 3 times a week. Absolutely no work except for the picking and an occasional weed that is easily pulled and it has to be easy because I am recovering from 2 hip replacements right and left.

I dug up the squash as soon as the were about 3 inches tall. Transplanted my green beans that were too close together where they had been and put the squash in dollar store big pots that I got for $3 each and put them on the deck with my tomato plants. I also had some deeper pots and all are about 14-18 inches deep. We have had 6 nice squash so far and 5 more on the vine. No work involved except watering with a hose. I add natural fertilizer from time to time.

We also have just enough yellow low acid tomatoes to keep us eating tomatoes every day.

Plus it has made our deck look so nice with all of the greenery. I do have a couple of hanging flower pots growing flowers out there. The squash flowers are so big and beautiful! I have lemon balm and sweet basil growing in smaller pots to keep mosquitoes and flies away.

Next year I plan to plant okra along the wood fence when I get some help to move my troy built tiller to my mom's where I spend most of my time anymore. No time to grow a garden at my house. Maybe I will make a bed in the ground along an empty side of the deck and plant carrots and greens next year, too.

I had never realized it could be so easy and so much fun even in the city. I have been used to trying to manage a big garden at my home in the country and for one person that has not been easy. Hmmm I do miss my sweet potatoes. Maybe another side for them next year. :-)

I have never tried Fall sowing. I am definitely going to compost in my raised beds as well as winter sowing in old containers.

So far, I have green beans, potatoes, carrots, beets, and spinach planted in my fall garden. I've started my broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, cabbage, and butterhead lettuce in seeding flats. I'll get some leaf lettuce and radishes started at the end of the month. Fall is my very favorite time to garden!!

I cleaned two of my raised beds and turned the soil in preparation for planting spinach and lettuce in one bed, and some hetbs in the other.
