Ones that sprout outside have an advantage in that they are already acclimated to the cooler temps, PLUS their stems are strengthened by exposure to all the breezes. Even gentle breezes help the stems to grow stronger. (Putting an oscillating fan on the lowest setting near the seedlings that you grow inside and having it on for an hour a day, or gently brushing your hand over the tops of the seedlings daily can also help strengthen those grown inside.)

Also, they are in full sunlight so again they are used to it, unlike ones grown inside that have to be first put in shade and then gradually moved into full sun.

I also like the ones that just sprout and survive the winter too. Very hardy tomatoes.

I have used both non GMO hybrids and heirlooms too and been very happy with both. The heirlooms had the better tasting tomatoes though. emoticon

I like the idea of heirloom tomatoes, but I get more tomatoes from hybrids. Of course, no GMOs in my garden.

I have to agree about the roses and their smell. Hybrids have almost no smell and when you buy roses from the florist they don't smell at all and even stink too. Love the smell of roses and want heirlooms too.

I'd love to put in some heirloom roses! They smell so wonderful and there's a wide variety of scents. The new hybrids may look beautiful, with large blooms, but often they have absolutely no scent whatsoever. Most people aren't aware that roses don't always smell the same, the scent of true roses is as varied as their colors.

I've had some heirloom tomato varieties that were tasteless. But I've also tasted some hybrid ones that weren't worth eating either. I find lemon boy tomatoes to be low in flavor and not worth the effort of growing, let alone eating. That's why I go for the orange varieties, like Kentucky Beefsteak or Dixie Gold Giant. Those both are bursting with flavor, as well as being low acid so they are sweet.
Mortgage Lifter (also known as Radiator Charlie) is a pink/purple one that produces 1-2 pound tomatoes that are lower in acid and full of flavor - one we have to grow every year!
I loved the flavor of Dona French, but it was a small tomato. Boxcar Willie has the same great flavor, but is a larger tomato, so that's the one I tend to depend on for canning.

I like to try one or two different varieties each year along with my favorites, to see how they taste and produce. And if I like them well enough, they will be added to the list of "must grow" varieties.

I'm sorry it came across that way. I didn't think you were. I was just trying to clarify what I meant originally. Unfortunately when people type, it's hard to get your meaning across at times. should have said "oh, I know that" I guess, maybe that would have been better

I know that, I was just stating that the ones I mentioned are heirloom, which by definition are NOT GMO, so that wouldn't be an issue. Totally tomatoes does carry hybrid varieties, which therefore could possibly be GMO or may not be. I don't know if they are or not, or if it even tells you in the catalog. I don't pay much attention to those since I only grow heirloom varieties.

Hybrid does not mean it's GMO. That's a common misconception. Many hybrids are open pollinated.

Though Totally tomatoes does have hybrid tomatoes, they also have hundreds of heirloom varieties. The ones I listed are ALL heirloom varieties. I don't have room in my garden to try all the varieties I want to, though I usually try to grow at least 1 new variety a year to see if I can find any more "must grow" ones

Totally tomatoes also has a wide variety of peppers and is now including other veggies as well.

I go through Totally Tomatoes for my tomato seeds. They have seeds from all over, including varieties that do well in hot climates, those that do well in cold ones, and everything in-between. Lots of different colors too. My favorites are White potato leaf (a cream colored variety with soft skins, so you have to be careful when picking them, but they taste great!), Kentucky beefsteak (orange, large, full of flavor), mortgage lifter (purple pink, large, great flavor), Boxcar willie (red, large, great flavor), rainbow, Aunt Ruby's German Green (large, green, great flavor, full acid. If you had your eyes closed you wouldn't know it wasn't a red tomato you were eating), Black from Tula (a dark red/brown variety from Russia, great flavor, but prone to splitting and doesn't keep well once you pick them), green zebra (a smaller green variety).

I've grown heirloom tomatoes when living in California, but just forgot to save seeds from my best producing plants. Moved to WVa last year, I bought about a variety of heirlloom tomatoes from Lowes this year, planted them in raised bed they were all doing great then were almost all destroyed by deer that got into the garden when we were out of town. SO, will be ordering heirloom seeds to start this coming season.

Any recommendations??

I love heirloom tomatoes but they don't do very well in my part of the country. I've only had the plants so when I retire, growing my own from seed my produce better results. Last year I had a yellow one that was about the same size fruit as a Celebrity and just a perfect blend of acidity and sweetness.

If the public only knew. The worst of the worst hasn't been leaked or published yet.

Then let's not even talk about the commercial meat industry. The things I heard and learned at dinner meetings would make most anyone sick.

I'm into seed hoarding, heritage breeds, and growing/raising my own; animals and milk are in our near future.

Monsanto is a bad company and they don't want people to know how bad their seeds will make us sick. That is why they got congress to pass the bill that will not let us know if we have GMO's in our food. Guess they learned from Europe not to tell people what is in their food and how it will cause lots of cancer and other illnesses

I think that all of us here are into heirlooms and stay away from GMO's seeds, if you get a GMO seed you are guaranteed bad seeds and deadly too
