I'm recovering from a rotator cuff injury myself. It's very common! And yes, it even hurt doing bicep curls. For about a month, I completely stopped doing any upper body work. Once I felt better, I added in internal and external rotations to my shoulder regimen - SLOWLY - and I'm feeling much better. I'd see a doctor, especially if you want pain relief (i.e. NSAIDs) My Doc put me on Celebrex, which is for arthritis. Good luck! I know it's a pain...but you WILL get better. And if you're anything like me, you won't lose much strength in the process.

I had a rotator injury and my advice is to STOP! Go back and get some physio on it.
Unfortunately once you've had this problem there will always be a weakness there.
It's taken me over a year to get back on form and when I push my luck I know it.
Take care.

Doing bicep curls can definitely hurt if your cuff is injured. That is not unheard of. When the cuff hurts, it pretty much puts the entire upper body out of commission.

Your shoulder shouldn't hurt doing a bicep curl. Get a second opinion.

Ha, I have this same thing... I injured my cuff doing push ups and like you, not enough to need anything major to fix it. I did massage therapy (the REAL therapy not the foo foo stones and lavender but someone who kicks your s$$ for a half hour and you can FEEL it afterward) and it helped it heal. The cuff is such a small muscle that it has low blood flow and takes a long time to heal. I agree, though, if it hurts, don't do it. There are some good therapy exercies you can do with a band to help it. I find that working to strengthen the rotator cuff helps. I still can't do real push ups and the most I can lift is 5 pounds for OHP, but as slow as it is, I feel it getting stronger. Don't push it. Honestly, I would look into massage therapy, it did wonders for me because if your shoulder is hurting, you will compensate with other muscles, my neck, back and other shoulder started hurting. Ice it when it hurts, ibuprofen helps if it is inflamed. If all else fails, see if you can get the help of a PT. Good luck!

Last summer I did something stupid and injured a rotator cuff - not enough to need surgery, but enough that it's still sore six months later. I went to the doctor and was advised to "see how it feels" in regard to weight training, and "if it hurts, stop."

Fine advice, but with a muscle that small and fragile, the difference between work-out-soreness and oops-I-tore-it-again isn't clear to me. I mean, it hurts to do a biceps curl - does that mean I have to stop all weight training on that side until it heals completely, whenever that is?

Pray to God, but row for shore.
