ST session this afternoon at the gym - we're working on perfecting my Turkish getup

Shivering should count! I don't suppose you were balancing a small child on your shoulders were you? Extra points for that

Not a terribly productive weekend, I'm afraid (unless shivering during the local St. Pat's Parade counts!) But I'm about to make up for it with an hour of cardio and some leg work.

Thought it was time to wean myself off "girl push-ups" and advance to the real thing. Did my first one EVER Friday night (yeah that's right; I could do only ONE!) But the next day I did two, and last night I did FIVE! Tonight I will do 6.

I personally don't do mountain climbers. I stick to planks. even when I was at peak fitness level, mountain climbers put extra stress on my back and shoulders so I stay away.

Does anyone do mountain climbers? Do you just keep going with as many as you can do or do you do a set a number like 2 sets of 20? Right now I'm doing 2 sets of 15 but I'm wondering if I should just keep going. Should you do them to exhaustion?

Still working out...not on SP nearly as much as in past years.

I'm doing a combination of STS Meso #2 (Cathe Friedrich) and Body Best (Sagi Kalev)
I'm alternating weeks.
This current rotation will be completed July 28th.
Then I will begin the second rotation using STS Meso #3 and Body Beast.
Alternating weeks.

Currently sticking with meal plan ratios of 40/30/30
Will increase the carbs and reduce the fat next rotation to 50/30/20

The last two years were real live changers for me.
Department closed and lost my job, my home, and moved to an entirely different state.
Loving the southern sun ... but the pay isn't nearly as high - so there are a lot of life cuts.
BUT, no matter what happens 'out there'...the matter of CHOICE remains 'in here'
I am choosing to rejuvenate once again and regain my fitness, health, and happiness.

There is no doubt that it can be done.
Just do it !!!

I'm here. I started doing my STS dvds from Cathe.com in mid March. The entire rotation should take me about 6 months to finish. I'm using a combination of body weight, bands, dumbbells and barbell. Leg day nearly kills me every week. I can't seem to suck in enough oxygen to power those bigger muscles. I think there are 36 total workouts, 3 a week, and I am repeating each week before moving on to the next week. I need to use either my dvds or a personal trainer. When I'm working on my own I find that I think I've done enough as soon as it gets kind of hard. Kind of hard doesn't get me any results. I have to work until it's really, really tough every time to see any results. Remember to work opposing muscles. For example, you are doing dumbbells curls for the biceps, so you also need to work the triceps with things like chairs dips or kickbacks. It's also a good idea to change positioning as well. For example, for squats use a combination of wide stance, narrow stance, normal stance and plie' squats. Dead lifts are great for the lower back, glutes and hamstrings. Also be very cognizant of posture and form to prevent injuries. Also, don't use the same weight for every exercise. You can use much heavier weight for squats because those are big muscles being worked and the weight is held close to the body, but if you are doing something like a lateral raise you will need to use a much lighter weight because of the much smaller muscles being used and they are held away from the body. As a final note, the size of your weights and the number of reps you do will depend on what your primary goal is. If you want to improve muscle stamina, you should use weights that allow you to do 3 sets of 15 reps before reaching failure. If you want to improve muscle strength and size use weights that are heavy enough for you to reach failure within 5 to 10 reps.

Any Iron Maidens still out there? I am back to using dumbbells for a few weeks now and increased from my 5 pound ones to 7.5 pounds. I know it's not a lot, but it's hard for me! And even working with 5 pound weights was enough to start building up my muscles - I definitely feel a difference even if no one else can tell.

I am doing this twice a week, and the whole routine takes about 25 minutes. I'm thinking of adding a few more body weight/calisthenic sort of things to the routine. What are you ladies doing? Right now my group consists of:

dumbbell curls
dumbbell hammer curls
one arm dumbbell rows
overhead dumbbell press
squats holding dumbbells
stationary lunges holding dumbbells
mountain climbers
dumbbell chest presses
bridges

I used to include dumbbell reverse woodchoppers but took them out after reading that they may increase the size of my waist since they work on the obliques. I read a few articles that argued both ways - good for whittling waist, and bad for it - so I took them out.

Any additional suggestions for a complete full body workout? I don't do pushups because at one point I hurt one of my shoulders doing them, and it has just recently started feeling better. The dumbbell exercises don't bother it, though, for some reason.

Hi Holly! I just joined this forum today. Congrats on your purchase! Are you lifting regularly?

I’ve been doing the 5x5 beginner program on stronglifts.com. I really like the simplicity of it. Plus, I just got this beauty for my birthday. Well, it hasn’t arrived yet, but it should be here soon. I’m so excited to round out my home gym with a power rack so I won’t need a spotter.

Greetings Iron Maidens. I joined your team about a year ago and during all this time I have lurked a lot, but not really been involved with the team. Mostly because I only had minimal equipment (dumbbells, kettlebells, etc.) so I hadn't fully committed myself to serious strength training. Today I finally purchased a weight bench from Craigslist so you will be seeing me around quite a bit more.

Did my first training session since I pulled something in my neck. I reduced the weights a bit and did a little more warm up than I usually do. I feel good! I have to remember that I am not 20 years old anymore!

Lost in my own head today. And need to get this out to hopefully move past it.

I started weight training consistently this week. Before now I'd been on and off (more off then on) with weight training. I let life get in the way and always used the excuse, "I'll do it tomorrow I promise" and of course I never did. So yesterday I did my weight workout despite the fact that I wanted to talk myself out of doing lunges and squats because my thighs were still pretty tight. I did it anyway, using the table or a chair to help me remain balanced until I'm able to do it without the support.

In addition to this, I've been following a macro way of eating. I also had gastric sleeve surgery last year and it's done wonders in helping me shed 80lbs. Excellent start but I was still 40lbs away from my goal when I started weight training. Well now, with following macros I'm eating about 1400 to 1700 calories and meeting my protein goals daily. So now I stress out about whether I'm eating too much (anyone that's had surgery knows what I'm talking about) or if I'm not eating enough of something.

And then I start obsessing about the scale. Weighing myself daily. And I'm watching it slowly creep up to 200 again and I'm starting to panic slightly. I want to trust the process and give myself time, but at the same time can't stop needlessly worrying that I'm tracking myself back to gaining weight instead of losing. And that worrying makes me want to change up my diet or workout routine already. When I know realistically I need to give it time.

Gah! I swear our minds can be our worst enemy sometimes! Thanks for letting me rant :)

emoticon Hi! I've had a rough year, but I keep trying. That's all you can do sometimes. I hurt my shoulder some how almost a year ago and my shoulder "froze" up this summer. It's loosened up a lot now since I've been able to get back to working out. Cardio worked good to loosen it, but Wednesday I was able to lift again! I lowered my weights and modified where necessary, but I got it done!

I wanted to start up this thread again, I see no one has been posting for awhile. I had a cardio day today, but back to strength training tomorrow. And I have to say, my glutes are still stiff and sore from Wednesday! Yikes! Lunges just kill me. They're so difficult for me to do - I don't know why I just get very awkward with this move so I now do stationary lunges and it still doesn't feel right. I've watched plenty of videos but it's just not a natural move for me.

Hi, my name is Sharon and I am new to the group. I am limited in some of what I can do because I have COPD and on oxygen 24/7 and that makes breathing a chore for me. I need to add some hand weight exercises to my routine to build up some strength in my upper body. I do walk daily and I am finally up to 52 minutes a day but have to split it up. I am 74 years old and have 3 children and 5 grandkids and 2 great grandkids. I hope to learn about you all and will post more when I get more knowledgeable about your group. Thanks for having me.

Sandy, I'm not an expert, but I find that it's easiest to start with bodyweight strength exercises (lunges, squats, pushups, planks, etc).

Hi, my name is Sandy. I have been trying to get brave enough to add strength training to my weight loss efforts. I know that it is important but was not sure where or how to start. Then I saw this team. I am hoping to get some ideas and support as I work on this area of my overall health and fitness goals. I will look into all that the team has to offer and then jump in. I am looking forward to making some new friends and learning what and how to add strength training to my life.

Yes, dumbbells. My fiancé has some weights, loose and solid. I use the solid ones which are ten pounders. When I advance I am going to go to the loose weights so that I can vary the pounds.

It is an awesome workout!! I only do the weights for five minutes, (that is all the longer I can do right now), and continue dancing for a variable amount of time. I do all kinds of moves with the weights: bi-cep curls, tricep lifts, criss cross, boxing, side butterfly lifts, front lifts and I just get creative. I feel the burn immediately. If I went longer then five minutes I would probably drip the sweat! Needless to say, by time I put the weights down, I am all ready damp!

I just started this Sunday and I have lost three pounds. I can hardly wait to see what the results is at the end of the week!!

I like to work out to music pretty good. I could use the weights to add to the dance. I have not done that yet. I am going to try it.

I've been using the SparkPeople workout generator for my strength. I have arthritis, so the machines are better on my hands than free weights, and SP tells me what to do! Don't think I could craft my own program... We have a Y membership for daycare, so that's the gym I've been using. Don't get me wrong, I like doing cardio at home (cuz if I'm going to look like a dweeb I'd rather it be in private), but really don't have the space or money to properly equip a home gym. But I do love seeing my muscles becoming more defined, larger, and actually being able to put that into the regular stuff I do!

that is another reason to workout at home. By the time you spend driving there and back you could be done working out.

Oh Joyce - I am SO right there with you! LIKE someone telling me what to do. lol Right now we're having a tough time fitting in a workout. Even worse being down to one car & hubby having to drive everybody everywhere. Tried to get a car over the weekend, but our credit score wasn't as good as hubby thought it was - ever the optimist.

I hope the membership does motivate him. My sister-in-law paid for a whole year membership to a gym and never went even once. My husband has serious motivation problems so I know what you are talking about. Right now, the membership is probably worth it just to shower! I love working out at home with videos(I LIKE someone telling me what to do!)

Thanks Joyce - I'm checking out that website now! As far as videos - I know you're talking about to learn etc, but if I had my rathers I'd just workout WITH videos at home. The only thing I miss at home is a good elliptical & maybe a couple of other machines. Hubby on the other hand feels this will motivate him I guess. Honestly - tonight we're talking about going to work out just so we can SHOWER THERE - lol/sigh - We've had no hot water at home for several days. (having to order parts to repair HW heater)

Anyway - thanks again for the help! Jenn

Go to weighttraining.com and then go to workout plans. Then you select your difficulty level(I strongly suggest starting at beginner). I would also suggest that you view videos on correct form while weight training so you do not injure yourself. Form is critical. Also check out some books from the library on weight training(they will also have workout plans). You can definitely do this without a trainer, but you will need to educate yourself. I never used a trainer, but if you are unable or willing to learn than the trainer is well worth the extra money and could save you thousands in medical costs. Good Luck and Best Wishes!

Hello all. Jumping in. I don't think I did an intro for this team, but in looking I don't think I see a thread for that - no worries.

My husband & I live in Texas, he being 59 & I'm 55. He was quite anthletic in his younger days & until the last year or so I was a pretty regular exerciser. I was always disciplined enough to work out on my own at home, but my husband felt the need for a gym membership, which we got last week.

At this point, I need my feet held to fhe fire as well. I'm back working full time & have gotten USED TO sitting all the time!! So - to get me back going again & support hubby, I'm going along with the gym deal.

Current dilemma? We have no idea what to do there - kind of. When we signed up we were told we got a "free fitness assessment" and they'd show us what exercises to do, how to use the machines, give us a food plan etc. Nooooooo. H//// No. The free thing was pretty much setting us up to buy training sessions. Ok - should have known better. We have too many bills currently & some debt to clear up & I don't even have a CAR at the moment. Sorry - no training sessions.

So, my question here is if anyone has ANY good suggestions and getting or finding a program or regimine to follow. I wish I could do a month of training for hubby for a Father's Day gift, but I doubt I'd get the discount for only 1 month, so It'd cost me an arm & a let. Hubby needs an EATING PLAN too, but that's another matter. He tends to fall for gimmicks etc & I figure if a professional told him, perhaps he'd make an attempt.

Any insights please let me know.

Thanks! Jennifer

How are you? I am doing fine. I am new to the team.
I'm glad that I could join this group. Looks like a good one.
The reason I came was to tone up while meeting new friends.
I do have a question though, don't have money for a gym.
Does the weights at the house give you just the same results?
I know I won't be building up as a weight lifter but would like to be healthy.
And get some muscle on that will help my future job.
Hope you are all well. Have a wonderful day!

Good morning guys, hope you are all having a good day so far.
I am doing alright. Just waking up and drinking coffee.
Was at boyfriend's house last night till 10:30pm.
Visiting with Chris and the boys which was really nice.
I am sorry I haven't greeted anyone this week. Been getting over being laid off.
Was only at Wal-Mart for a month before they decided it wasn't working out.
Truth be told I was shocked and a little hurt and upset. But I am doing better now.
Will keep leaning on God and keep looking for a different job.
(Already got my resume ready to go to different places). Went to six yesterday.
Hope you all have a good weekend and a great week ahead. Have a good day!

I started the Modern Women's Guide to Strength Training back in June. If anybody needs any help deciding what to do from day to day, you should really check these gals out. They are AWESOME! www.girlsgonestrong.com

These ladies keep me motivated and it's nice knowing that I have a plan when I walk into the gym, knowing what I am doing gives me confidence as the weightroom can be a scary place. emoticon

I had to laugh when I put my 8 incline pushups in my fitness tracker, they were only worth 9 calories. But then I remembered I am trying to help my arms get stronger, not lose weight or eat more, etc. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I can do this.
