I loved those as well Nancy. I was an avid reader growing up. When I was a teenager a friend of my mothers gave me a whole stack of Nurse romance novels. She was a nurse. Those kept me occupied for a long time. Now I am reading PARALLEL LIVES. Its based on a true holocaust story about a Jewish couple who marry. They put their daughter with Catholic friends and she goes into a concentration camp and he goes elsewhere. She becomes the secretary/aide to one of the Germany officers and they fall in love. Near the end of the war, they go to his home where they get married. She never tells him she is Jewish but somehow he knows. The story follows what happened to her husband and daughter along with what happened to her. We are in the 50's now. Its not very well written but its holding my interest. CArol

I still love Laura Ingalls Wilder! I remember my 4th grade teacher introduced us to her books. She would read the books to us at the end end of our school day. Even the boys enjoyed the stories.

Finished that book and downloaded What did you do in the War Sister about a group of nuns and what they did during the war. The order found a stack of letters that was kept by the nuns during WWII and the author based this book on those letters. I am also still reading the Innocent Client so need to get back to it. I ready several at a time. Carol

I loved reading Wilder. I'm into the Juden book however, I want to find out what happens to him as he is undercover as an SS officer. But 1/3 of the way through the book, it goes back to what was happening prior to him going undercover. I skipped whole passages as I did not want to learn about what happened previous. That part should have been in the beginning. Carol

I needed something light and easy to read so I picked up an old one from the bookcase. It's a children's book but one of my favorites. "On The Banks of Plum Creek" By Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The innocent client is okay but not inspiring me to sit down and read nothing else. Also reading about two brothers who were in 4 camps and were about 14 and 16 when realeased. Can you imagine your formative years having to go through hell like that and then returning to "normal" what ever that is? They were in a monastery with others to recover and all of them wanted to hoard the food that was served even though they were continually told there was ample food for them. Carol

Nearly finished that book. I read until my eyes wear out when I find a good book. I don't read every word. I scan. It seems I have the ability to get the gist of it all by scanning several paragraphs at once. The more I read the better I get at it. It wastes time for me to read every word. I think I've read 3 books this month already. Carol

Finished that book. It wasn't very long and written by her granddaughter. I subscribe to kindle unlimited on amazon which is $9.99 a month. But the books are free. I have read countless number of books on this programs, ones I wouldn't normally buy but have enjoyed. So to me it is worth it. Hubby prefers to peruse and buy one and read it and then get another. I dont like that effort because If I choose unwisely, then I spent $9 on nothing. Kindle Unlimited, I dont have to read it if I don't like it and can get another one free. Carol

I skipped way ahead in the book I"m reading to get to the meat of it. I don't read every word and the beginning of the book was all about getting to Auschwitz and what happened and I've read that many times. I know about Irena Sandler. I might like that one. The book I have now is a fictional account based on a fact about a woman who went to Auschwitz as a political prisoner. She is just getting there but she ends up being the mistress of the commandant, much like Helen in Schindler's List. So I am thinking she is Helen. Carol

She never knew anything about it but was left a box of papers when her father died that led her to other relatives and papers. Quite interesting. Carol

i LOVE A BOOK I can't put down. Not really into anything at the moment except Satisfied. I have kindle unlimited which is $10 a month and you get up to 10 titles at a time. It seems like a lot of money but really, I have read so many books that are free, sometimes 2 and 3 a month. I'm a fast reader and will skip over lengthy passages that I can scan and get the gist of. I'm weird in that way. My hubby reads every word. Carol

Finished "Orphan Sisters" a week or so ago. I'm reading a book by a historian that debunks another historian. I want to read her books so I'm reading the critique before I get involved. It has been interesting but I have to wonder what chip the guy has on his shoulder.

I'm also reading The Dutch House. It is a pretty good book.

"Quilting has been found to enhance participant's experiences of well-being as they move into older age.

Research reports quilters find the work challenging, cognitively demanding, it helps to maintain or generate new skills, and working with colour was found to be uplifting, especially in winter."

This is so true! Thank you for the article Meg. Explains why I would take on a complicated tester quilt or quilts with scraps of all colors to try and make them work together. Carol

Meg,

Just finished reading the article. Yes, I agree, too. When I was working, I found quilting to be a means of creating something (something I didn't get in my job at the time), as well as a means to take my mind off work. Today, it still provides a creative outlet as well as a means of learning new things.

We are signed up to do a Band of Brothers tour next May. After going to Normandy it goes to the Battle of the Bulge and then Dachau and Munich. We had visited Dachau in the 70's. Not much there at that time, old buildings and a room with some photos. It will be interesting to see what they have done with the place. I think it is important to remember and never forget what happened there. Even though traumatic. Carol

Finished that one. Now to find something else. It was interesting to me about her geneology hunt to find relatives in Hungary that she did not even know she had. She did find a 90 yr old second cousin who had been in Dachau concentration camp as a teenager. That is amazing and the 90 yr old was thrilled to help her with research. Carol

In reading this new book, the author is spending about 2 months in Budapest Hungary where she is researching her family. Since we went there on our cruise a few years ago, I remember some of the places she visited. The main synagogue and the bronze shoes on the side of the river to commemorate the Jews who were pushed into the river by the Germans. There is a movie about that called Working with the Enemy about the resistance in Budapest during the war. Carol

I finshed Cry of the Heart. It held my attention but it wasn't that well written. In one chapter, it was sweltering hot in the summer and they were miserable. The next chapter, the weather didn't make any sense. But it held me so I finished it. The next book up is NOODLE TRAILS 2; A GENEOLOGY ADVENTURE. The authors ancestors came from Budapest. He was raised Catholic but thought one of his grandparents was Jewish. His father would not speak of it but his mother finally let him in on some information when the author was 60 and he is going to go to Budapest to research. Since we visited Budapest a few years back, it will be interesting for me. And I'm into geneology so will enjoy the journey.

Nancy I read Code Girls and am convinced this is what my mother did during WW II. She joined the Navy in 1944 and the stories she told emulate some of the things that happened in the book. I'm pretty sure she was sworn to secrecy as she never discussed it and died in 1979 so we never confirmed it. But she attended Goldey Beacon Business school, Hunter College, worked in Washington DC and joined the Navy. She was an excellent typist and key punch operator. My sis read the book as well and she agrees with me about our mother.
WG, would love to know about the adoption stories. I enjoy those. I finished THE PLANTERS WIFE by Ann Bennett and enjoyed it. When I can't put it down, it is a good book. Started another WWII story about a Jewish mother who gives her son to someone else to raise in France. Just getting into it. CRY OF THE HEART, a WORLD WAR II NOVEL by Martin Lake. I really like those.
Here are the rules for this thread, you must include the name of the book and possibly the author so we can enjoy as well. Carol

I have loved reading all my life. One of my fondest childhood memories is sitting in the notch of a tree reading or writing. I love listening to books while I'm driving or walking. I just finished "White Trash by Nanqcy Isenberg. It was enlightening and helped explain some of the difficulties I've had tracing ancestors. It's about the poor white in America over the 400 years. I'm currently reading "The Orphan Sisters by Shirley Dickson. and "The Dutch House" by Ann Patchett.

I enjoy history and fiction. I love Gabaldon and have enjoyed her books so much. I read almost anything that tickles my interest and just finished several on the history of adoption (both fiction and non fiction) in the United States. I've read books on end of life decisions that changed how I look at those decisions.

My DIL belongs to 3 bookclubs and always has books on at her house since she is too busy to read them visually, she listens to most of them. The kids hear a lot of different writings.

Thanks for thinking about it. I'll keep watching this thread.

I just finished Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead by Jim Mattis and it was outstanding. Next on my list is The Night Fire which is the third in a series by Michael Connelly. I like his Harry Bosch stories and this continues on with a new lead detective but with Bosch as a supporting character.

I'm waiting patiently for Go Tell The Bees I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon to come out and for the next book by Deborah Harkness to come out. Both are still being written so it's going to be a while but I love both authors.

I enjoy reading. I have a Nook as well as use the Kindle app on my iPad. I just finished “Code Girls” by Liza Mundy for my book club last Friday. I also read Joan Chittister’s book “Radical Spirit.” My church recently sponsored her for a lecture. I haven’t started any new yet though I have several lined up.

I am an avid reader too. I usually am reading 3-4 books at a time. My fiction book(currently Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble) is at bedtime - I read about 1/2 hour before I turn out the lights. My non-fiction book (currently The Hole in Our Holiness by Kevin DeYoung) is usually at breakfast and lunch while I am eating. And then a children's series is while I walk on the elliptical (currently The Happy Hollisters). And then the Bible and a devotional book (Be Still and Know) first thing in the morning during my quiet time.

I don't like Kindle - I too need to read a good old paper book! My husband is an avid reader also - books are his favorite gift to receive. We have quite an extensive library - there are bookshelves in every room and the basement main room is our "library". I know I have over 1000 children's books. I haven't counted our other books.

I like Christian fiction, historical fiction, mysteries, children's and quilting books. My husband likes the old science fiction.

I wish I could read on a Kindle. I have too much screen time as it is, so I enjoy good old-fashioned books, preferably hard covered. I guess it's because I have arthritis in my hands, and gripping a soft cover book or kindle doesn't bode well for me.

At any rate, right now I am reading The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter by Hazel Caynor. So far, so good!

I can't put it down. Reading books and doing puzzles are not good things for me to get into.
I like WWII historical type novels and this is one of those. I belong to Kindle Unlimited with Amazon which is $9.99 a month for unlimited selected reading. You can have ten titles for free at any one time and if I get one, and don't like it, I can return it and get another. I have several that I have started trying to get into them. This one, grabbed me from the start. Definitely worth the price I pay as I can read two books a month or more if I like them. Carol
