I love when my cat Milo gets really hyper, fluffs up and jumps sideways making a "marrrr" noise. I have to laugh every time.

Isabella has a quiet little purr. Her sister Midnite is a loud purrer. Midnite loves to sit at the window or back door to watch the birds. She will swish her tail loudly back and forth on the floor. She also has a low throaty growl.

She has a quiet purr and a pretty soft meow. She also chatters and sometimes whines like a baby.

Sage meows for the most part, but he sounds like he's saying 'oww' or 'eow' instead of 'meow.' He chirps when he's watching birds or squirrels out the window. He also purrs, snores and squeaks. Sometimes when I pet him while he's trying to nap, he'll make little grumbling sounds. He's very vocal!

Bastion doesn't meow. He never has. He kind of chirps and twitters when he wants something. He barely purrs, sometimes when he's really happy you can feel him purring but you can't hear it.

Bones is also quiet. He only meows occasionally when I get the catnip bag out. He purrs at an audible level sometimes.

By contrast, Digit, the cat in my profile picture, is the LOUDEST cat I have ever seen. He meows all the time. We "talk" all the time. He has several different meows. One for just chatting, one for when he's hungry, and one for when he's about to puke.

When he's hungry, he sounds just like he's saying, "Now! Now! Now! Now!"

When he wrestles with Bastion, he yowls and yelps and hisses and just makes a racket. And if Bones so much as bops him, Digit screams his head off.

He also purrs CONSTANTLY. He only stops purring when he's asleep or the vet takes his temperature. He's my little V-8... my motorboat.

It's funny. None of our cats have very much to say. Shadow makes a kind of eeeerm sound. Never opens her mouth, just eeeerms.

Tammy occassionaly meows, but mostly she purrs. She does occassionally hiss at me. She's been doing that since she was a tiny kitten. I didn't take her seriously then, and I don't take her seriously now. I just tell her to be quiet, she knows she loves it (whatever I was doing that caused the hiss, usually tickling her toys)

Frisky rarely says anything. When she does, she sounds like she is in great agony, like she got caught in something. But, she does this in the middle of the living room, where we can all see her and there's nothing wrong. I think she's getting senile and a little deaf and maybe a little blind. Not enough for concern, just enough to make her howl at things that aren't there!

Great thread! emoticon

Our Tommy has different sounds. He meows very loudly when he sits at the window and wants to go outside (which he's not allowed to) *or* also at ~3 AM when everyone is sleeping.. which is why we have to keep both of our cats in the laundry room/bathroom where also their litter box & food is. (They have their comfy cat bed there too on top of the dryer)

But Tommy can also make the cutest, soft meows when he 'answers' us. When I tell him for example something like "Sorry, buddy, I already gave you food earlier, you can't have more!" Or "No, Tommy, you can't go outside, I'm sorry!" he responds with a soft 'Meow!' and blinks at me.

Now Stella, our new kitten has a tiny, purry kind of voice and is very talkative right now. Not sure how much it'll change once she's older (she's 13 weeks old now).

We used to have a Siamese male cat who'd be very loud and almost sounded 'demanding' all the time!

A cat of my parents would almost whisper 'Mew', not a real 'meow'! LOL

It's funny, how each cat makes different sounds, isn't it!?

Venus is very vocal. She "talks" to us all the time. One of our favourite sounds is actually when she is sleeping. She snores. A whistling sort of sound. It's so adorable.

She can get quite loud though. When we were on holidays and she stayed with Mark's dad, she actually kept him awake some nights. And he has a hearing aid!

Zico talks nearly all of the time. When he is coming into the house or headed toward the bed, he just mumbles like the old man that he is. However, when it is time for packaged wet food, his meow grows quite animated. Any sound he makes is a love sound to me. I just love this best friend of mine. emoticon

Nutmeg has actually started grumbling at us. It's hilarious - she will sit on the sofa with us and when she is thirsty she will sit up and grumble until I bring the water glass up to her nose! She is also doing this throughout the night - so I am sleep deprived - a grumbling kitty next to my head at 3 am - you gotta love that!

Pip Squeak squeaks, but he's still a kitten.

Tux meows and growls, when he's angry which can sometimes be frequent since the arrival of the kitten, as well as walking around complaining until he gets hoarse.

Snowflake has a quieter meow than her brother, Marmalade, who can be quite loud & demanding.

Bailey has a very quiet voice. In fact, I was gone for a weekend one time and my mother could not find him. He was in one of our closets.

Peace,
Karen

My Licorice prefers the dove croon (the half purr half meow) but when she gets really excited she does this crying yowl thing that just hits you in the gut. I'm always afraid someones going to hear her and think i'm abusing her, but she does it when she's playing so who knows what she's really trying to communicate :)

My 5 do make different noises but there are only 2 that I can tell apart. Penny my oldest tells us that she is hungry or the food bowl needs filling up, she says Neow Neow, instead of meow meow. Funnyface the next oldest will meow like she is in distress, plus she has the loudest purr. If any one picks her up, she constantly purrs. Pearl Will meow very loudly & scratch at the door to the computer room if she is outside & wants in. Topaz her brother purrs very loudly, especially when he is getting snuggles & love. He will meow & growl if I pick him up & touch his stomach or back paws. Shadow just purrs or meows & hisses when Pearl is in her eyesight.

Tigger meows loud, actually yells, when he is hungry otherwise he say yeah when you ask him a question or no...depending on the correct answer. Sparky meows, "ack acks" at the birds and says "oo,oo" when he is lovey and cuddly. It's interesting,I have done my own experiment with different cats and the universal word for birds is ack, ack. They all understand when I ask them if there are ack acks outside. He, he.

My Elvis has a meow that sounds like he is saying hello. It sounds really odd. Sammy, my siamese, was always uncharactistically quiet for a siamese, but now that he is older, he has become a lot more vocal. He is very possesive of me, and when I go out in the yard, he will sit on the screened porch and howl like you wouldn't believe. I always say that Sam is doing his yodeling..... that is what it sounds like to me !

I have 6 cats, all inside 24/7. They are each very different from the other and each has his or her own unique sound and behaviors.

Cricket (age 13)...20 pound Maine Coon...Makes sure that no one goes humgry. He is the one who "Meows" for food...so frequently that no one else has to be concerned about mealtime. His sound is "Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow, etc." until I take action and fill the bowls. No one ever gets hungry with Cricket around...LOL.

Max (age 4)...loves to sit in the window and "MEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOO-WWWWW" while looking at me as if he is asking to go outside. I do not let him go outside, so he eventually grows tired and flops down in the den underneath the ceiling fan which he considers to be "his" spot.

Jade (age 4)... enjoys sitting on tables, cabinets, desks, or anything that put her at or about my chest level. When I get near her, she reaches out and taps me on my shoulder. She meows quietly and wants me to rub her ears.

Freedom (age 3)...was rescured from a bank parking lot when she was a tiny kitten. The only sound one will get from her is a tiny little "squeak."

Kobe and Chloe (age 1)...LOL...these two are something else. Chloe chirps and coos like a little bird when she gets excited, and Kobe only makes any kind of sound when we pick him up. He is very busy and would prefer to be running wild in the floor than being picked up or held. So when we pick him up, it sounds like he is saying, "OOOHHHHH NOOOOOOOO!" LOL

That's my crew...It is really only Cricket who makes what I call the basic "Meow." The others all have their own distinct sound which is each totally different from the others.

Take care all and keep in touch.

I had a cat who was silent from a kitten---like your Pearl JLOWE 1 that never could make a sound but purr or try to meow with his mouth open and nothing coming out, he was a Maine Coon mix named Puff who loved the outdoors and was a great mole hunter.

The 2 cats we have now make different noises.
Mr Fluffy does a distinct "MEOW" but he only will use that once or twice when he REALLY wants something and when he purrs its LOUD.
Ace makes high pitched tones and appears to try to talk and rarely purrs or meows.
Our daughter's Maine Coon, named Minx, can growl like a lion when she is mad which is most of the time and she purrs and meows normally.

Like us humans they are all unique.

I know if I hear cats chirping, there must be birds outside.

I have one kitty named Squeak (who squeaked when she was very little), who sometimes looks at me inquiringly and says Mrrrp? just like she is asking me a question.

Tallulah meows&purrs at the same time and it is the best sound.
Scout meows in different degrees. She will meow quite forcefully and you know she is demanding some attention, but if she holds out her meow for a long time, then you better know that she is very upset and you better drop everything at once. She is a sweet cat and doesn't demand much attention, but she is a chatterbox and will talk your ear off.
Scarlett is more of a squeaker and if she meows it is extremely quiet.

I couldn't go through all 6, but one will yell his head off if you close the door on him when you use the bathroom. He wants to sit on your lap. Another, a giant ex-tom cat has the tiniest little meow for his size. A few of them chirp as others have written, the cutest sounds! I can ID any of my kitties by their voices, I'm sure you all can as well.

Stay calm and carry on.

My cats love to "chirp" at birds, it is so funny when they do it. My youngest Otis, meows all night long unless someone is loving on him, it is actually making me crazy lol. And they all "yell" at me for food and go and sit by their bowls like they are so starved! Cats are so fun.

I've never heard Clyde say anything more than a short "meh"; he puts everything in to it though emoticon And I think he just recently learned to purr. He used to make a noise that was more like snoring, now sounds like a purr.
Bonnie is quite the opposite. She chirps, chatters, gurgles, meows, and yowls when she "catches a mouse". She's very vocal. Hmm, they sound like a typical man and woman - the woman is always talking while the man rarely speaks, LOL.

I had a bird on my balcony feeder this morning: Bagel does the classic - "ooh, tasty flying food" cat chatter, and Bastis just squeaks at it. As a predator, she's not very intimidating.

Interestingly, Raqi is very calm and silent about the birds, although she chatters and trills like crazy over those dang bottlecaps she loves so much!

I only have one fur-baby as of now, and he has a cry when he wants to play at certain times of the day; he also has a cry when he gets mad at you if you don't listen to him, and he has a different one for when he's about to get sick from a furball. His purr sometimes is very loud!

Sadie's purr sounds broken lol...it's continuous with "bumps".

Sophia's purr is smooth and deeper.

They both "fuss" at me when they want something, never really a meow, more like a loong squeak.

Both of my cats are very vocal as well.. MY boy cries like a girl, lol but he also talks to us a lot. He talks to the squirrels, groundhogs and birds through the windows as well. He also will get in your face and huff like a lion does (ever since he was a baby which is why he is Mufasa)

Now my little girl.. she does longgggggggg meows and sometimes gives me the silent meow.. She is a sweetie and loves to be brushed and roughed up a bit.

One bite, one day, one pound at a time. Remember you are worth the effort!

Disney is very vocal and has different sounds for her different moods. When she wants into the linen closet or is upset she has a really loud yowl. When she's just talking she meows normally. If she feels like I'm leaving her or ignoring her, she has soft little whiny mewls. She chirps when I get home and does these grunting little chirrup noises when I pick her up (she rarely purrs, this is her happy noise). In the morning when I wake up and disturb her (mind you she seems to take up the entire bed and I'm on the edge~ she weighs 8 lbs), she makes indignant mews. And when she jumps up or down from anywhere she squeaks.

Both of my cats talk to me. My husband jokes and calls me the Cat Whisperer. When I am home I have my furry entourage following me room to room.

Both are Persians that I adopted as adults at separate times. They have very distinctive voices. I have read that Persians have higher pitched cries and for these two it is true. Do other persian owners notice that?

Gritty's voice is loud and high pitched. He lets you know he is there. He has his crazy moods where he makes what I call alien sounds. They are these strange low gutteral noises as he races room to room. I cannot describe it, but it is funny to see and hear.

Our new girl Lilly so far has a high sweet and soft voice when she is talking. Although she has the loudest angry voice when Gritty comes near her. She has a very strong personality and doesn't put up with anything from him.

Coco cries very loudly when she wants out (futile as she's strictly an indoor cat!). Wolfie trills when he comes into a room where his humans are! And when he wants attention (frequently) he yowls... sometimes it sounds like he's saying "mama"!

Our oldest, Tabitha, sounds like a baby crying. She will just keep crying at times to get out attention and it is just waa, waa, waa...

Our male, Pepe, says uhoh, especially when he gets picked up (he doesnt like to be held and will only really put up with it from me if my husband is not watching or Pepe doesnt see my husband or anyone else).

Simone, just has a "normal" cry but she sticks out her tongue when she meows. She is a very loud purrer though and purrs all of the time when she is getting attention or just sitting on me.

Charlie actually meows "MOM" and I am not the only one that has said that because anytime someone hears him walking around the house calling for me he yells mom.

Rascal only meows when he is upset about something and its very tiny and barely pitched, he has never been a real vocal cat.

Nana talks to you, its very high pitch never ending meow from im hungry to I want attention.

Abbot only meows when I get home from work to get my attention and its very suttle and short but he has the most low tone meow for a boy.

Missy does meow, she humms. It is the cutiest thing when she sees you its this prissy starts off low to high pitch humm.

Big Boy is just LOUD!!! He has the most annoying voice but I love him. He is very vocal about everything from food to lovins and he will bite or swat at you if you don't give him the attention needed at that moment of time but its just in fun nothing harmful but it proves he is very spoiled.

Destroyer talks to me only when he wants a bath or when I get into the shower and its a little squeaky but he is demanding when he wants his attention. Persians have a very calming personality.

My almost 14-year-old squeaks. Has since she was born. She cries when she carries her stuffed "babies" around in her mouth.

Pete doesn't have a normal meow either. Sometimes it sounds like a trill or a chirp.

I love to hear both of them talk to me - which Pete has been doing alot of lately. His fave thing to do is wait for me to get out of the shower and then proceed to "talk" or "yell" at me. LOL

Particularly for those of us with multiple cats, have you noticed that along with their distinct personalities, each kitty has his or her own "voice"?

Share them here! Can you tell your kitties apart just by their sounds?

My three littermates all have very different sounds, and I always know who's "talking."

My boy, Bagel, is a yowler, although he has a very vocal purr which sounds like a meerkat, for anybody who watches Animal Planet, you'll know the sound. He also "barks" when he jumps up or down on something.

My Raquela has a slightly higher-pitched yowl than her brother, and also does a chirrup or chatter when she's excited. She "talks" the most of the three, though Bagel does a lot of "prowlin' and yowlin'," as I call it.

My baby Bastis is a squeaker. She also chirps and chirrups, but very high-pitched, and has the most mournful little squeaky cry you ever heard when she wants something.
