Just a quick check in tonight. Need to get to bed early, stayed up last night to watch the biggest loser. Ended up with only 6 hours sleep. Not good at all.

My friend gave me a ride to work again today, since it was so cold again. Better than standing in the cold waiting for the bus. Was supposed to be warmer tomorrow morning, now I find out it's going to be 38 degrees at 7 when the sun comes up. Yuck! Not sure if I will get a ride tomorrow or not.

My biggest challenge is fitting in the exercise. I have to do much better than I have been. Evidently I've been doing something right as I've been loosing since we started the challenge.

If I only pushed myself to get the exercise in I know I would do much better.

Not much else here, still have lots of kids out sick, had several more in the schools's nurse's office today. I pray that I don't catch anything from them. I was in the bathroom a lot today, but I think it's because I've been eating more fruit and veggies. I sure hope that's what it is.

Well, need to get to some more emails, then need to fix the hem on a pair of jeans i want to wear to work tomorrow.

Have a great rest of the week. Can't believe tomorrow is Wednesday already.

Sorry not able to read all the posts. I have been so busy the past 2 days and tomorrow is even busier. Despite my fiasco over weekend I am down a pound. I am on the straight and narrow. Trying really hard to get back on track for the challenge. I think Christmas did me in and so many things there after. Work threw me a birthday party. I ate one slice of a lemon custard pie. Stayed away from chips and stuff. Now no more celebrations for a while. Hope you are all doing well.

Take Care!

Nadine - Good luck on your interview, I pray it's the job you've been looking for.

Betty - I went up a little this week from last and I too stayed within calories, exercised etc. I'm thinking maybe my sodium intake was too high, so I'm trying to watch that this week. It's a new week so let's keep pushing. The only thing not allowed is giving up!! emoticon

Irene - Hi! Thanks for noticing me here. I feel like I have better days when I'm on here and interacting with others who share my journey and who have common goals. All of you here motivate me!

NFBrewer - 2-3 lbs is actually very good. 1-2 lbs a week is recommended for sustained loss. Remember, slow but steady wins the race! Good luck to you!

Well I am on my way again. My doc said my bp is a little high. In order to stay off meds I have to drop 20 lbs. Easier said then done. I have only lost 2lbs since the first of Jan but its better then not losing any.. I need to get moving. I am praying I will stay motivated. I love spark people and reading all your posts. I feel I am not alone in this. Stay strong, we can do this. emoticon

Congrats! What I want to know is how did you lose 8 pounds in one week? I've been making huge changes in my food and life style since Jan. 3rd or so and have only lost 2-3 pounds. I'm sure open to suggestions! Thanks.

I lost 1.8 lbs last week, but I went home sick on Thursday so I didn't eat much. Usually 1 lb a week is about the best I do.

I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Have a great day!!

Congrats on your job interview Diet Friend, wishing you much success at it. And my motto is a pound down is actually 2 because I didn't gain 1.
I feel really motivated this year to get this weight off. Thanks for all the support.

Nadine- congrats on the loss and good luck with the interview.

Weigh in for me 0# loss this week. That's discouraging, ate right and exercised and no loss emoticon

Just need to "pull up the boot straps" and wait for next week.

Hi new to the group. I am actually doing ww but I love the support and all the people on spark. I have been struggling with my weight for over 40 years. I am almost 63 and I am at 295 right now. In 2002 I weight 342 pounds. I seem to be struggling with trying to get the pounds off. I know I take some medications for my diabetes that make it hard for me to lose weight. I still havent got the exercise going. I use my pain as an excuse but I know that if I get the exercise going even if I have to do the chair exercises I feel better and get more energy. I keep starting over and over again but I know as long as I don't give up I can do this.

Down 1/2 lb. That's 1.7 since the challenge. That's some of holiday gain of 2lb.....just a few more ounces to go.

As long as... we stay steadfast in our conviction to set realistic goals; we can achieve them.

You can't change everything..... just like that!!

What goal in particular are you working on right now? You know mine..........making exercise part of the process.

Thanks so much Diana for keeping the group cohesive by including everyone in the conversation. It's something... you do so well.

Kathy.. your so supportive to the team and appreciated.....Yep........ might be nice to try a different piece of equipment. Change is always good.

OK, just to much to read all the posts. I've been MIA for the last few days. Spent the last days of winter break trying to catch up and get things done around the house.

Back to work this morning. ended up getting a ride so I wouldn't have to be standing out in the 36 degree early morning weather. Trying to stay well, but being around all these sick kids is a little scary.

Down 1.6 lbs this week, Hurrah!

Need to do better with the exercise the rest of the week if I'm going to be down another lb.

Off to get things ready for work tomorrow.

I had a busy day. Vacuumed, mopped the kitchen and bathroom, 5 loads of laundry and bathed the dog. After cleaning I went to take the garbage out, so I let Scooby come out too. Was watching him run around the yard, turned my back to put the garbage in the can, turned back to see him rolling in mulch. He found something very smelly and muddy to roll in. emoticon Brought him back in and to the tub over my freshly cleaned floors. Bathe dog and touch up floors. Lunch and catch up for Monday night Bible study. Dinner, shower and out the door for Bible study. Catch up here, log food , then bed. Weigh in in morning. emoticon

I didn't accomplish much today sitting in the ER with one of my daughters. She got injured 3 weeks ago and last night her arm went numb. She has a pinched nerve and swollen muscle. Praise God she didn't have a neck fracture.

Diet_Friend, I found out yesterday how fast I can get up. My DS1 came by to take the treadmill apart so we could get it out of the house...I fell in the yard, carrying the platform from the treadmill. Luckily, I wasn't hurt, but I certainly managed to pop right back up. My son was worried...a year ago, I probably would have broken something. On the Wii Fit...the yoga postures sometimes are hard on my knees.

Irene, I'm looking at perhaps an elliptical AND I'd buy a used one. The treadmill was used when I bought it probably 10 years ago @ $250. I went to Play It Again Sports on Saturday, but the ellipticals they had were either new ones or sold. I guess they are a fairly frequent acquisition, so the manager told me to check back during the week. I think the elliptical will be easier on my knees.

Creaghel, welcome. Just keep coming back. We all struggle from time to time and the trick is to not quit. My one-year anniversary is coming next week. I am totally committed--not where I want to be but not where I was either.

Diana, my experience with Zumba was similar to yours; it's in the drawer of the entertainment center. The fun part of Zumba for me was watching my 2-year-old granddaughter try to do it with me. She'll try anything and LOVE it! I love the Greek yogurt as well (so does my granddaughter). It's thicker and seems to stay with me longer. I love the key lime (granddaughter's favorite),but I don't think I've found any that I don't like. I used to make my own yogurt years ago, and I think the consistency was more like the Greek.

Sweetneey, I really need to sit down and plan out my meals for the week. It's one of the changes I need to make and your post reminded of what I need to do. I've never eaten quinoa...what's it like?

Fancystitch, slow is good.

Elsie, what a great thing to be helping with the picture. Yea for you!!

Jbacon, stick with Spark. I have had limited success with WW--and I'm quite sure that was due to my lack of committment. Nonetheless, I've stuck with Spark for a year and had good results and it's cost me nothing but committment!! Save your money...spend some time on the site. Success is yours for the taking!!

Cat, glad that your retreat was a success and that travel didn't become an issue.

Granddaughter Stella has the flu. I've had my flu shot so hopefully I'm protected. I had her overnight Saturday--high fever, chills, and raspy cough--and today. DIL picked her up early to take her to the doctor. DIL was sick over the weekend also.

Be safe and stay well,,
Kathy

Thanks Lesia,
I think you're right- there is no benefit to ww online. In fact- there are a lot of things I like about this site better. I thought maybe in person meeting would keep me more accountable. But, I know that hasn't worked in the past. I just need to keep on tracking and not stop when the rest of my life gets busy or I get bored or whatever it is that stops me. I think I need to use the boards more for support. Thanks all.
I have had a good first 2 days on the program- eating in range and getting in 30 min exercise. I know the struggle is to keep on keeping on.
Happy Monday all!

Jan - I tried WW Online and I feel I get more support here on Spark. I thought surely a program I have to pay for is better, but I didn't see where there was any benfit to it. Bottom line always is that you can do anything if you want it bad enough. Sure it's a struggle and there is no miracle plan out there. You kind of have to figure out what works for you. It's just as we say here, one day, one pound at a time. Consistency is the key. Good luck to you and all of us here! We're all on this journey together.

Jam and Dietfriend,
Thanks for your comments. I feel I can do this with sparkpeople! You all are encouraging. I didn't know my sparkpage was set to private. I think I changed it. Dietfriend thanks for thinking of sending me a goody. What a nice thought!
Hope you all had a good Sunday. Mine was nice- got grocery shopping and garage cleaning done and had tea with a friend.

JBACON - I have joined Weight Watchers 3 different times in my weight loss journey. I had good support the first time because I was doing it with people I worked with. The other times I was not successful because I needed the support but didn't really connect with anyone between meetings. The support I get here at SP works for me because it is there any time I reach out. That's my experience.

Sorry I went MIA. Went to a retreat started on Friday and I just got back. Ate way too much good food. Now that I am home, I will be on the straight and narrow. It was a spiritual retreat. I had a great time and met a lot of nice people. It was in Washington, DC. I drove unscathed. DC scares me--parts of it most of it) because I don't know how to get in and out of the city. I did it by myself ( with the help of the Garmin). I can't take all of the credit. Lots to think about. I have to go unpack and get stuff ready for work.

JBacon, I was going to visit your Spark Page to give you a goody and respond to your post one-on-one, but it was set to private. I agree that you might not need to invest in Weight Watchers and that Spark People could be enough support and resources. The important thing is to stay with it. I like doing the Wii Fit too. I don't think it's very strenuous but it is fun and it's better than sitting on the chair all day. I have invested in some resistance bands and those are easy to do, but you can feel the burn a bit. The videos on Spark are very helpful to learn what to do with these bands. Plus when you buy them, they sometimes come with a little chart of moves you can learn. I also have a ball, but I don't use as much because I hate getting on the floor--that alone would be a workout for me: getting on and off the floor!

I have a hard time making healthy choices in my eating. We are all human with human failings. If losing weight and giving up overeating were easy, everyone would be thin and the snack industry would be broke. The most important thing for all of us is to NEVER give up even after slipping up. Keep on sparking!

Happy New Year all! I was doing fairly well with sparkpeople and school started. I dropped it all and gained weight back. I am determined to become healthy, one choice, one day, one pound at a time starting today! I was thinking of joining weight watchers too. But, it seems so expensive and I'm not sure I'll get anymore than what I get from Spark people. What do you all think?
I have kept up exercising- not the 50 minutes a day of summer, but 30 minutes 3 times a week. I like to walk and use the Wii. Right now I use mostly Excerbeat. eating snacks is my main problem. My goals tarting today, I am going to track all my food, make healthy choices and exercise 5 times a week for 30 minutes

Woke up this morning to ice on everything..it sleeted most of the night..the ice sure is pretty and sparkly when the sun is out.........see even ice "sparks".........lol

I didn't get to church today due to the ice. We will be walking down to oldest daughter's house later for our monthly family dinner.

Yesterday, I worked 3 hours at the library in Joplin with the photo return group. We had 9 families come in to look at the photos. One lady came in to claim some pictures and decided to take a look in the books where she found 2 more pictures. One family that came in was in their car which was picked up by the tornado and deposited else where. One of the girls was hurt and spent time in the hospital. We do hear some amazing stories.

Have a great Lord's day...........Elsie

I don't usually post to the boards, but I will try to make the effort and do so more often. My weigh-in is Tues. I had a day of eating too much. So we will see. Onward and downward (weight, hopefully). Today feeling really bloated. Hope that goes away by tomorrow. I have never had a problem losing weight before. But it seems the older I get, the harder it is. I am one of those who goes all out and makes all the changes at once. This time I am listening to SP and making gradual changes. It will be slow, but I will reach my goal and maintain when I get there.

I made my grocery list and menu - so this is week 2 doing this. I got up this morning and checked the menu for tomorrow to makesure I defrost and prep the meal today. So I have meals for today and tomorrow. I am also trying recipes I found on Sparkrecipe and they actually taste good. I did the quinoa blackbean salsa casserole. I had this quinoa for months (one of those healthy thoughts binge which did not translate into action). I am a real carnivore, so I was reluctant about this vegetarian dish. I took it to work for lunch and I was mulling through my mind whether I would eat it or buy something. So, I took a deep breath and heated it - it really tasted good. I had some leftovers and it was tempting to let my portion distortion get the better of me. But I froze it in servings and I will eat it. It was a pleasant surprise and good reinforcement to try new recipes. So I'm trying the quinoa and vegetable salad.

Irene I doubt you would get a failing grade in anything! I hate exercise so Iím no help with suggestions. Maybe a DVD with some Zumba. I did that once for 3 minutes and thought I would die! LOL I think now that Iíve been walking so much I may try it again. I could really feel my legs after I tried that! Our local vocational tech has exercise classes. You might try to find something like a class.

HOLLERGIRL and FABGRAMMA good for you! One pound at a time.

HAPPY TRAVELS what a great start to your journey!

SWEETNEY donít get on that slide! We are here for you. It is frustrating when the scale goes up but dig in as you said and it will go the other way!

MINDLESS donít get discouraged. Remember it is one pound at a time. We all have those roller coaster times. You just need to stick them out. Continue to eat within your calorie range and you will start to lose.

Sharon thanks for helping us remember it isnít just a numbers game. We need to eat healthier!

Grace you are so right. When I first started SP I was told to make small changes but I am an all or nothing girl and it was hard for me. Now Iím starting to see a difference too. I now walk 10,000 steps a day and substitute fruit for my formerly carb snacks. The battle can be done with small changes. Good job going to sleep instead of eating!

BOANEREY congrats on the inches lost. Iím finding that in my legs with walking.

SUGARPLUMP good loss!

Betty you are making good progress with your holiday gain! Way to go! Awesome that you have gotten to overweight. I hate the word Obese! I have no idea what a ďChicken Flight or Snowball ď is but good for you I guess! LOL

Diet Friend sounds like you are getting in your exercise too. That is interesting about the soda. Something to think about. I mostly drink water but with some foods a diet coke seems to be the only thing to drink. Iím a work in progress.

LKNIL I donít cook with pastry flour but I bet it would make a difference. It sounds smoother! LOL

Kathy my blisters are from walking my 10,000 steps a day. I guess I have the wrong socks. They keep slipping down in my shoes. They are diabetic socks. I have others with me here but they are sometimes in the wash. Soup supper sounds great. I miss a homemade soup! Canít wait to get back to USA! Those little ones can keep you walking for sure.

Elsie if you continue to ease yourself into exercise it will be better. Has your doctor given you anything special to do? Wow, you had a binge and only ate 50 calories over your day? Not bad. You must be trying to stick to the bottom of your range.

Daisy glad you lost. The turtle wins the race.

Dancer that is a very small gain Iím sure you will see a loss next week. Hang in there.

Lady Kathleen I have never had Greek yogurt. What is it everyone likes about it?

Hello to all I didnít mention. I am not feeling well today. I may end up leaving Kazakhstan this week. That would be alright with me.

My first post on this forum. I am two weeks in and overall have been managing. A couple of falls from the wagon and the usual beating myself up but I did manage to restart and get back on track. I do however see that on the days I excersise I don't lose and sometimes gain a bit. This is extremely de-motivating for me as of course since I really don't like to do it, I have a great excuse not to! After all, when I excersise, I gain! I know rationally that this isn't so, it sure is a struggle to get back to the treadmill.
Anyway, I do know I am not the only one struggling every day and I really have to do it this time or I am afraid all will be lost.

Fullbloom - just a thought about treadmills - they may want to sell you on the model that has 14 different automatic programs built in. The model we got only had 4. It was a lot less and frankly all we needed. Look for one that may do intervals. That is one of the best options for improving your fitness faster. Beyond that, go for really simple features. Don't know about you but I'm not training for a marathon!

My muscles, joints, over all tissue pains me. I'd like to say, it's from working out but I got hit hard with the flu.

It is all parr for the course making progress or not making progress.....the thing is to hang in there and not throw in the towel. Sooner or later, you'll know, what works for you. My progress may be slow but it is happening.

Kathy, Well, at least, you wore your treadmill right out......way to go. What are some of the features, you look for when purchasing another one? I don't have a clue about treadmills.

Does anyone else have an opinion about what one should look for when purchasing a treadmill?

The prices are so questionable ........like get $1000 bucks off. Seems there is always a deal...... but is it?

I got a lot of working out on my Wii Fit today. I am experimenting with some of the strength training and yoga moves. I'm game if it doesn't hurt my knees and I don't have to get on the floor. I got an exercise mat, but still not cool with getting up and down on the floor. Hopefully if I lose some pounds it will be easier.

I am up some weight. I know I've been indulging in salty corn chips and too many carb/calories too. I am so weak in the face of those yummies! I am pushing my water to dilute all that sodium though. Need to think of something tasty and nutritious for dinner. Started the day with a bowl of Grape Nuts and a banana. I felt like I needed the fiber. I need to find some other fiber-y foods to push along with it!

I find that I must make an appointment with myself and write it down to make sure I commit to the time. I already have an appointment with my friend to meet at the gym tomorrow morning. I am sure to go even if she backs out. I had a hard time last night with food and I am concerned about a party I have to go to today. I just hope I don't back slide. I am committing right here to you all that I will have a good day today and stay honest to my plan. emoticon

Kathy I'm so with you lol. I don't do a treadmill, but I do a lot of walking around the yard when warm enough. I also am learning line dance. At this time I'm doing that 3 times a week and as soon as I get my barn cleaned up will be doing the line dance in there the other 4 days of the week. It's something my Dr. actually suggested I do more of. Once warm I'll be taking the dog for a walk again. That in itself is an aroebic excercise. Jack Russells, even when 12 yrs old, don't go slow.

Weight loss is so unpredictable. Remember, non scale victories are also encouraging! Each size down, each belt loop tighter, bounding up stairs where I used to have to stop, getting compliments, feeling stronger, sleeping through the night after a good day of exercise -- all these have happened to me even though I haven't lost but one pound in 9 weeks!

Irene, so much for the treadmill. I managed to get in 1.5 miles this morning before it died. I've had it for a lot of years and bought it used, so I may go treadmill shopping later today. It's not exactly what I had planned (moneywise), but I've spent money on other things that were not important to my wellbeing.

Carol, great job and keep up the good work.

Lesia, tell me a little about the gazelle, please.

Mizcaw, I'm thinking we're in the same boat. It seems to be that 200 marker. I've been dancing around it for a couple of months. I'm doubling down with planning meals and doing more exercise; I have to break that 200 barrier and SOON. Come with me?

Daisy, you're still one up on me!!

I have a bit of trouble with Chinese, Happy, because there are hidden calories. It looks healthy enough; I'm just never sure about sodium levels and other additives.

Elsie, some days are going to be better than others. Isn't it something that, even with a binge, your calories are not entirely over the top? That, my friend, is progress.

It was nice and warm yesterday, but that has passed and it feels like winter again. I will have Stella for a few hours this evening, so I need to get things done before she comes--that includes exercise, although she's pretty funny will try anything with me.

Kathy

Didn't post much through the week - will do better this coming week. This week was a mix for me but mostly good. I finally made lunch items ahead of time so I didn't have to rush around in the morning to make lunch - or what I usually do - buy fast food or expensive food in the cafeteria. The other bright spot - those days I ate throughout the day rather than just at lunch, I did feel much better in the afternoon. I would only eat breakfast and lunch then be starved at when I came home from work and would just eat from 5:00-9:00 non stop. The days that I ate same stuff but throughout the day I had much more control in the evening. It is really hard to change though. And then there was Thursday - someone brought in the mini candy bars. Oh my....but did recover on Friday.

Not doing so well this week----was on a 2 day eating binge-the good thing is that I was less than 50 calories over my limits both days.

I did get signed up to use the exercise equipment at the hospital where I volunteer yesterday. They faxed the clearance form to my doctor so they should get that back by Monday. I am planning on 2 or 3 days a week to start. They have a machine that is like a recumbent gazelle that I am anxious to start on. It works both the arms and legs.

Heading onto my second week. My husband has started to waiver but I am staying on track. My goal next week is to get more exercise in.

I hope tomorrow eating out at Chinese restaurant that I can stay within my calorie goal either that I will have to go and burn off some of those extra calories.

May this be the turning point in your life. Each day opens like a door letting us see the wonders of life. It is up to you to embrace all that is given. Do not regret the wasted moments of the past embrace the future and move forward.

Loosing weight is so unpredictable! I agree!

One week down, one week up. We just need to emoticon to eat healthy and get that exercise in. For me, I have more trouble with the exercise. I feel I'm doing better with making healthy choices.

Passed up my favorite cookies when I was at Target today! Hurray!

Trying to enjoy the last few days of winter break, and get everything in the apartment back to pre Christmas order. Will finish that tomorrow along with the laundry.

Better sign off, need to get dishes done and hopefully to bed early.

Have a great weekend. Stay safe, warm, and healthy.

This weight loss business is soooo unpredictable. Just when I think I have a handle on things and my coping strategies seem to be working, I find myself sruggling more than ever. I have been managing to stay within my calorie range. But the cravings for forbidden fruits are awful, especially at night. I've been exercising but find that I make every excuse imaginable to avoid it. Have found a healthy snack that has been keeping me from totally losing it. Have had a serving of plain Greek yogurt with just a drizzle of honey on it (maybe 1-2 tsp) in the evening a couple of times this week. Weigh in is Monday & I am hoping that that will help me eat sensibly the next few days.
have a great weekend Everyone.

I made a big green salad today. I put in Italian salad mix plus fresh spinach as the base. Then I had a few sliced beets to toss in as well as a half-cup of black beans. I scattered an ounce of feta over it and chopped up a roma tomato too. Over it all I had ranch dressing that is fat-free. Pretty good! What will I make for the family later? Don't know...I'm a little uninspired.

Most weeks I feel like I'm on a roller coaster. Last week my weight was down, this week it's up again. I went from 201 to 203. I keep telling myself that when it goes down I've lost some of the fat and when it goes up I'm gaining muscle which keeps me going even if that's not what my body is doing. I'm trying to incorporate an hr of line dancing daily, just need to find a place at home for the 3 days I'm not at class. This is great cardio and fitness exercise and I love doing it. Hopefully it will help in the weight loss too.

Irene - I don't know if you have knee issues (I do), but I got a gazelle, only around $100 and it's a good workout, very easy on the knees.
