I try to plan as much as I can. I work part time 8 am to noon 5 days a week I know M-F breakfast will be a protein bar or shake that I have while driving. The weekends will on morning be oatmeal with toast, the next will be something with eggs.
For lunch when I get home at 12:15 will be with my 2 yr old. So that will be something easy like soup, sandwich, a pita pocket pizza, quesadilla, chicken nuggets-you know kid food. On the weekends there is no plan. For dinners I plan those before I go to the store. I usually have chicken twice a week, ground beef 1 time, pork 1 time, seafood 1 time, pizza or pasta 1 time, then 1 meal is whatever I come up with.

174 will put me at overweight, but not obese!!!

We do that with the leftovers too. For us though, since Wednesday morning is trash pickup, then Tuesday nights are automatically leftover nights. That way it helps clean out the fridge just in time for the trash to go out.

I try to plan a few recipes before going to the grocery store to make sure I have all the ingredients but I decide what night to make what as I feel like it. I also always keep certain staples on hand (frozen vege.s, whole wheat pasta and sauce, canned beans and brown rice) to make dinner when my brain is too numb to be creative. I do like to make larger amounts of certain meals to have left overs for the next night so I don't have to cook as much.

most days at our house, lunch is leftovers. I always cook way too much so that way it cuts down on waste. I try cutting back on how much I cook since most the meals I don't think would freeze well, but well with 7 people living here I'm always afraid that there won't be enough.

I tend to play by ear more though I'll plan in the morning what that day's meals will be. I will plan ahead sometimes, but normally its not til that morning.

I am so not good with planning specific meals... I don't like it if I MUST eat something... so I try to pre-cook a range of healthy meals for breakfast (muffins and quiches) and dinner (stews and soups) and for lunch I try for a salad with some kind of protein and occasionally I'll stock up on healthy convenience meals for when I don't feel like cooking

My goal is to plan our meals for the week. I like to go through the grocery flyer on my days off work to see what is on sale and plan our meals from there. I save money and we eat healthier. That, however, is not always what happens. And then we get takeout and eat unhealthy food plus spend more money than we would have if we made it ourselves! Yep, that is my new goal, make time to plan out our meals for the week.

Every Saturday or Sunday, I plan the whole week of meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for my family. We do not always stick to the plan but at least it gives us some healthy choices in our house. emoticon

About half and half for me -- breakfast and lunch during the week I plan out, but dinners and weekends I tend to just play by ear. I'm single, so I don't need to worry about cooking for someone else, so I like the freedom on evenings and weekends to just eat what I'm in the mood for.

As a working mom of 3, I have to plan ahead. There a bit of wiggle room in the menu, but dinners are pretty locked in. I use my crockpot quite a bit - a must when I work late so my dh can feed the kids with as much ease as possible.

Last minute trips to the grocery are my undoing. I hate wasting the time when I could be doing something else so I plan my menus for 1-2 weeks then send dh half way through for more milk, produce and bread. :)

Like yourself, breakfast and lunch are planned. But because I never know what I am going to want for dinner, I shop for it after work. The veggies are nice and fresh that way!

Do you plan your meals ahead, or play it by ear?

I usually buy my breakfast and lunch for the week. But, I'm not so good about planning dinner. Although, sometimes I will just decide to eat the same thing every night, just so I don't have to think about it. I'm not sure if this is an adavantage or a disadvantage of being single :)
